- This is the 3rd in a series of videos on the new baby gorillas at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Featured is 11 week old baby gorilla Jameela, from the Fort Worth Zoo, Texas, who is searching for a foster mom. You can see Jameela, Kunda and Kayembe in this video. Jameela was born January 5, 2024 to mom, Sekani. Jameela is Sekani's 4th baby, mom is 33.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, Nneka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, and Kunda 7/19/23, Jameela 1/5/24. ---Baby Jameela arrived in Cleveland on March 27, 2024 -----
CLEVELAND METROPARKS ZOO GORILLA DETAILS:
Mokolo - born at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, he came to Cleveland in 1994. At that time, he joined three younger gorillas to make up Cleveland's Bachelor Group. Eventually, we were left with only 2 gorillas, Mokolo & Bebac, then Bebac died in 2017 (from heart disease-not mentioned in the video). Mokolo is now 36 years old. He is the dad of Kayembe and Kunda. Females were brought to Cleveland starting in the Spring of 2017
Fredrika - At 49 years old, she is the oldest adult female in the troop. She is Kayembe's surrogate mom She has raised four babies of her own. She came to Cleveland from Zoo Miami in April of 2017.
Kebi - (Kebi Moyo) she came from the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in May of 2017. She had her first baby at the age of 8. Kebi's first baby is named Kambera Dupe and she is currently at Zoo Atlanta. Kebi is now 32 years old.
Nneka - born in San Francisco. She came to Cleveland in April 2018. She gave birth to Cleveland's FIRST baby gorilla in 2021 (a male named Kayembe). She is 25 years old. Nneka's first baby was raised by its grandmother because Nneka did not show any proper maternal care then (San Francisco Zoo). Today, Fredrika is raising Nneka’s second baby, Kayembe. Again Nneka, did not show proper maternal care for this baby either.
Tusa - she is the smallest and lowest ranking adult in the troop. She arrived in Cleveland in May of 2019 from the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo in New Mexico. Tusa is 32, but has her 33rd birthday on December 2nd. Tusa was hand reared by humans, and she can get very vocal when upset.
Kayembe - has the honor of being the first baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. He was born October 26, 2021, and is two years old now. Like most toddlers, he is very active. He plays most often with Fredrika and Nneka. His birth mom is Nneka, dad is Mokolo.
Kunda - is the second baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. She was born July 19th 2023. Her mom is Kebi and her dad is Mokolo.
Jameela - born via c-section to Sekani in Fort Worth Texas zoo. Sekani is 33 years old and Jameela was her 4th baby. Sekani did not accept Jameela after recovering from her c-section. A search for a foster mom led her to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

I just saw the news on a news show here in Italy, then I remembered your channel and came to see if i could see the little gorilla
That’s good news. Welcome! 👋😁
I wish the little girl (Jameela) all the best with her new troop. Please…..keep us posted on her progress.
Will do
She's gonna fit in just fine. She's clearly been accepted by her new Mommy. Zoo visitors will just have to be patient & understand a new baby in the troop makes ALL the gorillas on edge to protect it. Respect their binding process ❤
👍
Jameela is such an adorable little Gorilla and i hope Kunda and her become friends🥰
👏👏👍
I'm in Fort Worth and have been following Jameela and her progress since her amazing birth here at our zoo. I'm very hopeful that Cleveland will be the place she finds a new family. I was happy to find a channel that will keep us informed about her and I subscribed right away. Thanks, Larry, for doing all this.
Thank you, I’ve been following this troop for 2 years. Glad to have you along and I’m hoping it all works out here. 🤞😁
I live in North richland hills in tarrant county tx in ftw. I love jameela!
@Oldworldlove thanks for sharing. Welcome to this channel 👋😁
Larry, thank you for filming them and especially Jameela's progress. The fact that you number your videos, helps a lot, especially when you are behind on watching her. I live in Canada and I absolutely love gorillas. For all the people who wish we could see her up close but are unable to go see her, you are making our wishes come thru. She's such a beautiful baby.
You are welcome. Thanks for sharing your comment today!
Fred is a good mom. It seems she accepts Jameela as her own baby to raise, and that's good news.
Yes 👋😁
She must recognize gorilla smells, it’s comforting. She can see they look different from her keepers. Can’t wait to see her with a new mommy. 🙏🏻❤️
👏👏😁
Jameela is so precious and so curious about the other gorillas. Can’t wait for a meet and greet!
👏👏 Yes!
Mokolo is still so attentive. He just might foster her himself. Kayembe is really starting to resemble Nneka.
You mean Shabani personally cared for his babies? I didn't start watching his family until the kids were toddlers. Mac, in Columbus was the same way.@@HSR-bk5qb
💯 Love it!! Silverback Shabani in Japan watched over his little girl Annie while she was separated from the troop being hand raised by keepers. His devotion to his daughter was amazing! And continues to be since Annie is 11 years old this year and still such a Daddy’s girl.
I noticed Mokolo’s interest in the baby as well. I love these wonderful beings so dearly. They are incredible. 🦍♥️
@gorillabff1003 nice to hear good news! 👋😁
@gorillabff1003 That’s good news. We’re hopeful here! 👋😁
👏😁
I hope that one day we will see our beautiful Kayembe play with Kunda and Jameela.❤❤❤❤❤❤Thank you Larry’s❤❤
👍😁
Thank you, Larry, for being there to catch all of this fun interaction!!
You are welcome Joy. 😁
Thank you Larry. We haven't been able to get to the zoo and have been wondering what was going on. Do nice to have a update!!! Thanks Again
Whenever I can
So Larry, were you able to glean any information about the introductions process? I would love to know what is going on with the keepers and the whole troop. Jameela has been there since Thursday. You are a Hero for this video! 😊 Also, the keeper from Fort Worth, I hope she gets to stay a while. This has to be breaking her heart 💜.
It’s turning out to be a slower process than I thought it would be. Cleveland Zoo has released just one 30 second clip so far. Have you seen it on Cleveland’s public Facebook page lately? Our 2 year old Kayembe got super (happy) excited - a little too much. He was jumping and twirling all around. I imagine that will mean it’s a slow start. I’ll give more later- I’ll be right back… I visited Sunday also, I’m hoping to have that video out Tuesday morning. And I’ll be there today too.
@@larrysanimalsafari Not only they have to find a surrogate mom who will protect and care for Jameela 24/7 but they also have to make sure that Mokolo will not commit infanticide since she isn't his offspring (though chances of that are less likely since she didn't come with a nursing mom who cannot breed) . I won't be surprised if the process takes more than a few weeks for keepers to be absolutely sure that the safety of Jameela is guaranteed.
I also feel very sad for the Fort Worth keeper raising this little baby since it was born has got to be very hard to think about leaving her in Cleveland. I'm sure she hopes all works out for Jameela because she needs a gorilla mommy. But I'm sure that if will still be very hard to leave her behind.
@@springwisteria5171*I recently started following this troop, and your comment was quite informative, thank you! "Infanticide"? While I am aware anything is possible, I thought silverbacks were the great protectors, especially of gorilla children. I hope Baby Jameela will be welcomed and raised with Kunda and Kayembe.*
@bonnieferrell8571 👍
Thank you for the update! Kayembe is a super welcoming committee. Little Jameela is strong and Kunda is walking around more. I'm sending lots of good love vibes to the whole family. ♥️🦍♥️
Thanks, is that why they were looking so content. 👋😁
*Beautiful! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Great job, Fort Worth & Cleveland zoo curators, GREAT JOB! Jameela has been and continues to be in good hands! Freddy bonding with Jameela? **#Beautiful** **#Jameela*
*EDIT: KUDOS to the DOCTOR that brought Jameela into our world!*
Great Team effort! 👏👏👏😁
Thanks!
Thank you! I really appreciate the extra support. 👋
THE GOLDEN TRIO!🤩😍Jameela, Kunda and Kayembe all lovely and gorgeous😍🥰so funny to see Kay showing off again with his ball acrobatics to Jameela👏he must be thinking well if I don't succeed with lil' siss Kunda I always have Jameela to fall back on😁🤭🥰❤️great shot Larry!👏👍🫶🥰🌞🌻
Thanks
It’s so cute how Kayembe stays really close to Jameela playing with his ball. Mokolo seems really interested in the baby! Thanks for sharing. Excited to see more and hoping for the best for Jameela’s future with this troop. It would be ideal for the three gorilla children to have each other as playmates 🥰👋. 🦍♥️
I agree, the three can be playmates 🤞😁
Jameela is headed for a wonderful Troop.
👏😁
Kebi just dragged that whole stack of straw or hay? No way.
That her new thing. Gotta set up a comfortable spot that SHE picks. 😁
Thank you, Larry, for the update on Jamila.😊🖐️❤️

You are welcome! Thanks for following along. 👏😁

Llll yl😅
@@sallywade-kibler9795 you're not feeling ok? 🤔
Go get your baby Freddie! ❤❤
🤣
Mokolo was just as excited and interested as Kayembe but Freddy had them both beat. Some morning’s they’d be a little late and Freddy would be there waiting on Jameela, just to check on her and I’m sure Freddy was wondering is today the day. I love the first time the put her in her nest and Mokolo came up and gently was rubbing her head and her tiny feet. Of course like all Silverback’s he check to see if his newest baby was a male or female, it’s so interesting because that’s a natural instinct they do in the wild. She’s been loved from the moment that little Angel showed up behind their exhibit mesh and everyday try watching with her and Freddy with Kayembe just left to eat but any time’s they would nap there because she would nap in a crate on the other side of the mesh. Jameela doing her little noises after Freddy would just talk to her was so adorable. Look how all the babies have grown as well, they’ve become the sweetest most perfect family and Jameela will know nothing but love from the moment she was born by c-section to save both her and her Mom’s life to the OB-GYN, the nurses, the vet’s, the keeper’s and then here own Gorilla 🦍 MaMa that she could nurse from and a older baby brother. Then her Auntie’s and for all Jam cares Kunda is her sister and playmate, so I’m so thrilled and totally full of joy for our precious Jameela with her adorable curl’s. She’s living her best life with her loving family. Great Content You Had Saved Larry. I also like how the CMP Zoo keeps visitors appropriately back, it’s less anxiety on the Gorilla’s 🦍 and keeps others from tapping on the glass. It’s okay if a little Jameela wants to but the echo from many tapping from outside would make all the Gorillas 🦍 run into the tunnels for privacy. I heard someone explaining how to actually watch them the correct way to a young girl and it’s such a good idea to teach classes coming to visit the zoo because it’ll make for a better viewing experience and the Gorillas 🦍 won’t be bothered either.
Hey thanks for sharing this update!!!
You are welcome! 👋😁
BTW, the Fort Worth Zoo said on their Facebook page, Jameela is still technically theirs, she is just on loan to Cleveland to allow the gorilla troop in Cleveland to raise her and then she will come back to Fort Worth when she’s grown.
Oh, thanks. I suppose when she is close to maturity they and the AZA/Gorilla SSP folks will work that all out. Thanks for reminding me about Fort Worth FB page 👍
You’re welcome! I’m from Texas. I follow them pretty closely. They said that when they announced they chose Cleveland Metroparks Zoo as her foster home. I follow the Dallas Zoo too.
Thank you so much Larry!! This is so exciting!!!❤❤❤❤
👏👏👏😁
Kayembe as a seal 😂😂😂
😁
Hope all goes well with her new troop we laugh and learn and benefit from the gorillas thanks they are very smart and intelligent animals always learning something new each day from them god bless you guys thanks you guys rock way to go stay safe and warm out there much love and respect and appreciation job well done you should be amazed and proud !!! Joe 😅😅😊😊😊😊
👍
Wow! The video we've all been waiting for❣I can't thank you enough, Larry! 🤩 It's so wonderful to see Mokolo and Freddie taking an interest in wee Jameela - if they accept her, the rest of the troupe will follow suit. Bless Kayembe - he's so excited to have another little 'sister' and is doing all his best tricks for her. ❤ I guess it's because of her rough start in life, but baby Jameela does not seem to be at all shy. I loved the way she called out to the troupe the very first time she saw them - brave little girl. I hope the introductions continue to go well and she finds a new Mama.🙏🥰
We’re hoping for the best.
I’m going to start calling you lucky Larry!! U lucky dog!!!
🤣
Thanks Larry for your time and effort. I would like to think maybe your great video documentation of this group and Kayembe’s successful integration contribute to Cleveland being selected for Jameela. 👍🙂
Thank you for the compliment. 👋😁
Massachusetts subscribed and enjoying the beginning of a new and adventurous friendship. ❤ 👋
I love the food being placed in containers off floors 😊
Welcome! Thanks for sharing that you’re new here. 👋😁
We didn’t see it either, they just told us how it went.
I'm so in love with jameela
👏😁
Thanks for sharing this lovely video ❤
You are welcome! 👋😁
Thanks Larry! I saw another video of Mokolo and Tusa and let’s just say I won’t be surprised if she ends up having a baby next! She’s usually so quiet and to herself. I’m wondering if Jameela has kick started her maternal clock😂. Of course Kaye was right there but dad swatted him away!🙋🏽
👍😁
Thank you for keeping us up to date! This is such an exciting event. 💕🦍💕🦍💕
Yes! You are welcome - thanks for following along and sharing a comment. 👍😁
Great video!
Thank you! 👋😁
Excellent video
Thank you. 👋😁
Fwiw, Fox 8 News in Cleveland has a Jameela report you might like to see.
❤😊
👍😁
We can't wait for all of your updates Larry 🦍❣
🤣👍😁
Thanks Larry
You are welcome! 😁
Little sweetheart🦍💞
👏👏😁 yes!
So sweet! Kayembe is freaking presh too haha
👍😁.
Kunda in a shot all by herself, Kebi is slowly letting Kunda explore her surroundings. Have you seen Nneka or Tusa, or Kebi show any interest in Jameela?
No, but my visits are only 90 minutes long at the max.
I want to take her home 😊❤❤❤
🤗
It went very well.
Is that the gorilla keeper from Fort Worth with Jameela?
Could be, two did come to cleveland to assist. They didn’t come out and introduce themselves. LOL
@@larrysanimalsafari 😂 that's fair. One just looked like the head keeper
Hope she finds a mom soon.
Me too! 🤞😁
I think Jameela is too small yet to let her into the troop alone. Even Keyembe could be a danger for her
Oh, have you seen Kunda? She was born into this troop, yet she is very small. Her mother Kebi has to keep Kayembe from hurting her. I think Jameela will be okay.
Larry. is it possible for you to number your videos of Jameela starting with the first video. I'm new to your channel and don't want to miss any videos. Thanks!
I did do that with Kayembe. Guess I’ll make some updates- I’ll have to go back n start at the beginning
Thank you for the update - monitoring closely!
👍😁
Thank you Larry beautiful video ❤🦍
Glad you enjoyed it
Bom dia! Oi Larry!
Yes he is a male (Kayembe)
Is Freddie showing any signs of wanting to be with Jimeela? I don’t see any sign now. I hope this baby finds a forever home and is happy. Prayers!🥰🙏🏼🥰🙏🏼🥰🙏🏼
Tough to tell from 70 feet away
I would still like to see these primates in a sanctuary not a cage. ❤
👍
The music is too heavy-handed. It's distracting. I'd much rather hear the real sounds of the animals and the environment.
Email me your track and I’ll see what I can do.
Why doesn't the zoo workers put a sign up asking the public to speak softly and lower their voices while at the gorilla site. people r so annoying and self centered
She will be okay. When Kayembe was little he did the same thing…. Crawling through the sticks.
I think it’s wrong to have them all cooped up together in a small space they look bored because they have no where else to go to me it’s just sad 😞 but Jameela is so cute 🥰
Ok
Was thinking they need more space too. A whole new bigger building should be built.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
😂😁
Thanks Larry...for all you do.
I was just going to ask why they aren't given balls and blankets...like they do at The Koyoto Zoo.
At least they have balls....feeder balls.
But not play balls?
That 2 year old needs toys...IMHO
He needs picture boards and tablets to be able to learn numbers.
You know I'm crazy and wish the Gorillas could have more stimulation and things so they can learn about the human world.
I think they would love magazines..picture books.
Imitation of a natural environment...at the zoo I think it's good but also pretty silly.
The Gorillas live in our world now and should be educated about our world as much as possible.
IMO seems this zoo wants to limit human interaction with the gorillas. That may have something to do with having infants/toddler around to allow natural bonding to occur between mothers and their offspring. After all, two off our three youngsters didn’t have ideal starts in their lives (not being raised by their birth moms).
😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
👍😁. 🤗
Please change the heavy music to a lighter tune.
Get over yourself. There's nothing wrong with this music.
A bit of tinkling on the old ivories too heavy for you Rebecca? How's about "Yes, we have no bananas" or maybe some "Jungle Boogie"? Maybe they can hire a wedding band and play requests.
ok
Its Lilibet !
👋😁
Poor baby probably doesnt feel real Comfort with Her wearing A maak & Gloves!!!! Geeeez
🤔. Come to think of it , should they be wearing a black mask? 🤷♂️
😔
👋
I still think that shouldn’t took Baby gorilla away from her mom just yet should’ve gave the mom a chance. Yeah I didn’t even give her a chance. I just a baby gorilla away from her and gave it to somebody else. I don’t think that’s what’s fair but that’s just my opinion.
Ok
I love to see gorillas! But, I'm still bothered that we keep animals in captivity in zoos. I don't know why we allow it. Let them stay free in their natural habitat, where they can run free with unlimited space. They were never meant to be locked up. 😢
But they don’t have unlimited space. As a matter of fact the wild populations of most gorillas in the wild is drastically declining. Zoos offer a life line by education the public, raising awareness and money to help fund conservation programs to help save the wild populations.
Wow ~ First time seeing gorilla house interior for the public. More spacious than I realized. 🌟
Are the enrichment balls new? Noticed them at other primate enclosures and hoped these guys could get some, too - especially for our favorite 2 year-old who definitely looks like he's had a growth spurt. 🩵
#gokayembego
#savethegorillas
Fascinating to see how zoos have evolved thru the decades. 🩵🦍Love your channel & happy to see it grow!
I’ve seen these before, although not so many. The orangutans usually have these. Nice to see more in use. Thanks
Thanks!
Thank you very much. I appreciate the extra support. 😁🤗👏👏
