- Dr. David Unwin is a practicing GP based in Southport in the United Kingdom and is a recognised international expert on the topic of carbohydrates and Type 2 diabetes. After 25 years of attempting to treat diabetes by conventional methods, Dr. Unwin stumbled upon the website www.diabetes.co.uk and from this revelation now ignores official advice and treats his patients with a low-carbohydrate diet.
David is the RCGP National Champion for Collaborative Care and Support Planning in Obesity & Diabetes. In 2015 he won the North West NHS ‘Innovator of the Year Award’ and in 2016 he won the National NHS 'Innovator of the Year Award' for his work in treating diabetes with a low carb.
Dr. Jen Unwin is a consultant clinical health psychologist who has worked in the NHS for over 30 years, helping people with chronic illnesses to improve their lives. She is also former chair of the UK Association for Solution Focused Practice.
David and Jen are both founding members of the Public Health Collaboration (U.K.) and together the Unwin's have helped pioneer the use of low carbohydrate diets in the treatment of obesity and diabetes through a patient-centric model of ‘hope’.

I can not thank this channel enough for opening my eyes .
Aged 58, Male and became T2D last year after many years of watching my results getting higher and higher . Went very low carbs a year ago.
Phone call from GP this year after latest blood test to ask how I did it as I am not even boarder line 😎.
Lost 3 stone , took up ultra running and fell in love with me and cooking .
You saved my life , thank you
You have done so well!
Dr Unwin I was disappointed that you have been teaching your way in the UK now but it hasn't got the traction it deserves thus far . I see that the authorities have now ok'd the 800 calorie a day regime which was shown to be effective for T2D . I will be surprised if this is as effective in roll out as it was in a supervised study .
What's wrong with low carb and IF ? It's so relatively simple . You quote the fantastic savings you have made in your own drug costs but think of all the add on medical and social costs that are saved as well . This is the only way to save medical provision everywhere and in the NHS in particular.
Every GP practice in the UK needs a Dr Unwin !!!
Thank you for another fantastic video! I worked as a nurse in long term care and had many clients with T2D. Many were on high doses of insulin, not to mention various other diabetes medication. I can attest to the fact that none of these clients were ever given proper nutrition advice from the dietician or the 2 doctors on staff. Each and every day, these clients had episodes of hyperglycemia, which resulted in me following their specific insulin protocol to inject more insulin. As you can imagine, some had leg, foot and toe amputations, not to mention the fact that many were sent to dialysis 3 times a week. It was heartbreaking for me to watch and I felt completely helpless. Meals were loaded with carbs and clients were allowed to eat desserts at least twice a day, even when their sugar levels were very high. I discovered this amazing channel a few years ago and it has made such a difference in my life. Going low carb and cutting out sugar has helped me reverse T2D. It can be done!
Hi, great comment! My Mother is currently in the hospital battling delirium after heavy IV antibiotics for a staph infection. She has an insatiable crazing for sugar, and I requested she be put on a diabetic diet to reduce inflammation. I am horrified with what this nutrition protocol entails. Sweet N Low, high fructose and sugar muffins, lots of carbs, no fat, pudding honestly, it is borderline criminal. It appears to me that lots of elderly patients experience Delerium and I suspect their glucose and insulin levels spike with stress and this might cause issues with glucose uptake to the brain and insulin interferes with this process. I have been adding MCT oil and coconut oil to her diet trying to get ketones into her. The research being done on Alzheimer’s patients with ketones is very interesting but I can’t believe the lack of hospital nutrition strategy with Delerium and elderly/diabetic patients. My mother isn’t even diabetic but it feels like the medical staff are beyond rational discussion regarding diet. Margarine, low fat everything and horrible ingredients.
Here's the irony . Compared to many people I know I wouldn't have said that I was a carb addict . I worked in a place where fresh food wasn't available all day but there were plenty
of vending machines containing sugary foods all around the place . Since I retired from my workplace I haven't had one biscuit which I sometimes got from the vending machine . Still working on the occasional chocolate bar . Oh yes forgot to mention - my workplace was an NHS hospital !
The hospital gets income from those vending machines.
Recently told my endocrinologist about Dr Unwin. He is VERY interested. My endo is a unicorn. He understands what I am doing on keto and now carnivore and is supportive and excited at the results. I dont need him, but I like talking to him and I think he is fascinated with me.
Thankyou again. Always learn something new every time I see the Dr's Unwin. I've observed the failure of the medical world to address diabetes in the 40 yrs since I trained as registered nurse. I've been low carb proponent since 2011, gone to conferences and lectures, bought books, all at my own expense. I reckon I've helped many people with diabetes using Jen's questions. The road block I've seen has been mainstream dietitians and doctors. I think, again, things are changing. I'll continue to support low carb as the preferred option. Medications just shift the glucose around and don't address the root cause. Patients are interested in learning more if we bring them in to the conversation.
Good evening Unwin's from Canada..... I am a 40year 6month recovered alcoholic..... (not cured).... I can understand completely Jan's chat about addiction.... Most alcoholics have sugar (starch) addictions in childhood that translates to alcohol in the early adult.... take away the alcohol and the addict goes straight for the sugar..... I can remember going through many phases of getting well. The last frontier is abstaining totally from sugar in all it's forms as well as starch... If I indulge in that small piece of fudge... the pump is primed and the thoughts of more start increasingly to take over my thinking...... abstinence is the key to long term success and a transformed life......
Yep
Amen, very well said. I have alcohol addiction in my family. I didn't drink much most of my adult life. I am a sugar addict. Fast forward to about 55. I am fat and sick, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, fatty liver etc. I work on getting off sugar and then I really want to drink alcohol. I believe I have been an alcoholic who eats sugar rather than drinking. What a struggle itt is to quit both. I am the up and down lines on the graph. Emotions and family/ people/ relationship are major triggers. This video was a great eye opener, great tools to try for success, I am thinking. Blessings, Joy
Older people are an issue. My dad is recently full blown T2D diabetic at 80 yrs old, my mum definitley prediabetic but slightly younger at 75 yrs old, over weight, sky high BP etc. I have explained what they need to do in order to resolve their issues but they'd rather take a pill and carry on with their bad habits. Their addiction to sugar and carbs is very strong and being so old they are very stuck in their ways and just don't have the desire or the imagination to change their bad diets that they have enjoyed their whole lives. The attitude is that they are old anyway so they should enjoy their lives and partly also that they have always eaten whatever they like all their lives and have been fine (ironicly up until it all caught up with them and now they have to take pills for high blood pressure, metformin, insulin etc.) I've given up trying to make them understand or change their ways.
Prolly for the best
I am 75 and got smart finally June 2022. Late in game but dropped BP meds after one month off processed foods, sugar, starches, and seed oils 🤪🤪🤪…tossed BP meds in one month after 17 years on BP meds. Stopped the stupid statin as it blocks CoQ-10 needed by insulin to help our cells- so statin helps increase “insulin resistance “ ☹️☹️☹️
I was never much overweight but am now 125 in three months. I do 20 hours a day not eating and a 4 hours eating window.
It isn’t easy but certainly beats full blown diabetes and getting limbs chopped off. I do understand your parents though as I have friends who won’t listen either. ☹️☹️☹️
I am 74. Resisted going on BP medication for some years. Gave in. Was given Ramipril. Coughed for two months. Went back to doctor and asked for something else. Doc says I will give you this one. It will only make you constipated and give you fat ankles. I took the script but decided to go keto instead. BP back to normal.
@@gaynorloxton8869 thank goodness! Don’t give up doing Keto or low carb diet it really saves lives.
Such incredible work by the Drs. Unwin. Making a real difference in people's lives every single day. Good bless them!
I really love these Dr Unwin talks. It also gives clues how to talk to our friends about our low carb lifestyle. Please keep going in your excellent work.
There are is still a long way to go with my practice.Last time I ventured in there they had a pharmacist trying to dish out statins.I asked her about her view on low carb diet, and was told that we all need carbs and it was a waste of time.I just left and stick to low carb.Never felt better.
A wonderful talk! Thanks to Family Unwin. I know personally how powerful low carb is, it saved my life
You both have helped me - help myself 🤓 God bless both of you!!
Excellent! You encourage your patients and providers around the world.
I absolutely loved this lecture/talk. I'm in the US and I will use many of the resources to give my Doc who I'm currently battling because of my Low Carb Diet which has brought my Metabolic Syndrome into remission.
Hopefully you meant 'battling' lol 🤣 Been keto/vlc 4 years myself after being pre-diabetic - fixed that inside of 2 months.
@@BritGirlJay "battering" Hmmm maybe that was my mind writing what I really want to do... but yes it's battling. 🤣😂
How ironic that you have to battle your doctor when your success is evident.
What a wonderful wonderland Doctor. I love his tone and the way he talks.
Thanks for your good work! I used your logic and psychology on myself and am down 70 pounds.
Amazing work. And what a refreshing change to see some doctors still abiding by their Hypocratic Oath, rather than their primary focus being street dealing for pharmacy companies.
A brilliantly helpful & clear video. Thanks so much to Dr. David Unwin & Dr. Jen Unwin & Low Carb Down Under!
Wonderful to hear Doctors Jen and David Unwin speak. Such inspiring couple 🙏👍🥰
Very good talk. I think the next stage of patient education is how satiety works. The most satiating foods are high protein or high fiber. The least satiating are processed foods and high carb foods. Not being hungry is the key to long term recovery.
PROTEIN and FAT are the most satiating.
Steer clear of the fibre 😉
These people are real heroes not the pretend ones on the big screen..
Thank you..
My GFR improved 10 points after removing oxalate heavy foods like almonds and focusing on meat and saturated animal fats.
Brilliant. So pleased to see further results from this doctor.
Yay Unwins!! Fork in the Road! Brilliant book, Dr. Jen Unwin 🎉
I really appreciate people talking about the addictive nature of certain foods, that certainly fueled my BED.
Very good explanation of how successful low carb can be. Thank you
Thank you for your work Dr David and Jen..Much appreciated! we have hope!
Super follow-up! Best kind of research with ‘real people’..
I wish he could be my doctor
The Unwins are amazing people and love their work
Pre and post prandial blood sugars should be encouraged for the clients or patients this then gives them the ability to know exactly what foods are spiking their sugars and increasing the insulin bear in mind poor sleep and stress also is a driver for imbalance in blood sugars
love this Dr xxxxx
Dear Dr Unwin the strangest thing happened when I went low carbohydrate, my eyesight improved, I’m not diabetic but runs in my family, my BSLs were getting very high 9.7 even after eating 3 hours before so I decided to reduce carbs I’m down to 6.5 but I noticed I could see close up better.

Another great presentation from this channel.
People have a really hard time with my “extreme” diet. I remind them how extreme it is to consume cakes and cookies and popcorn and sugary cereals and candy bars at the rate our society consumes them. I tell them I have to be extreme because I am an addict
I do NOT point out that they, too, are addicted to carbs.
I’m only early on this journey however all I’ve done is drop out the pasta / breads / sugar / rice and eat what I was eating. Eg I may have already eaten say a steak, salad or mixed greens and potatoes - I’ve stopped the potatoes. If I was having say chilli con carne I’d have it with Cauliflower rice. - If a hamburger I won’t have the bun or sauce - lettuce will be the bun.
Brekky May be now eggs - mushrooms - not - oats -
So not ridiculous changes to do low carb. Not also suddenly eating 50 steaks a week. I’m testing Bloods after all meals to see what works and what doesn’t. - see what spikes what doesn’t. Bloods are on the improve. Early days/
Dan should have incorprated some kind of resistance training during this transition into LC diet.. but well done nonetheless.
I swear my goblin sounds just like Dr. Jen, accent and all. 🤣
This was very helpful, thanks guys.
Important question! Could i have raw veggies in my love carb diet?
Wish I could find a pcp like these docs
Dear Dr i would be grateful if you could please help me with my question i diagnosed diabetes last year and my Dr prescribed me metformin i was not happy to take them i tried to learnt low carb diet from Dr Jason Fung s lecture and i lost my weight and now my blood sugar is normal i would like to know how safe is taking statin or should i stop it
Education is just one small part of the battle. Over marketing of sugar, food (sugar) addiction and self control are all issues. Some people know fine well how bad sugar is for their T2D but because the damage is so gradual they do nothing about it. In the UK it seems quite normal to be overweight.
Great lecture. Thanks for sharing.
wow what an amazing Dr this guy is thank you for this amazing study ...I am surprised though that he would be allowed to practise as the drug companies would be going crazy with this amazing study and losing there money !!!!!!
That role play was so unrealistic lol...if I ever get to see the same doc twice they don't really give a toss- your patients are VERY lucky ! Carb creep is real, as is the same effect when trying to quit drink... I'm 7 months off of booze and trying my best with "ketovore", but the carb creep has made it more like "chocovore" and despite biking maybe 150km a week the weight has remained static.... I've been off all carbs now for a week and the cravings have totally gone.... I'm finding that the road cycling I've taken up since April has really given me something to focus on other than my bad habits, and the new challenge is sustaining that during the long cold Scottish Highlands winter...(got a turbo trainer now though...).
My bloods today were off the scale, seriously...the "Mission 3 in 1" has me at >500 TC(maxed out), HDL of 75, TGL of 67 and can't calculate the LDL due to the TC being too high....BG was 3.9 and ketones 1.5.....I'm not so sure that eggs don't raise my cholesterol so after a week off of sugar these are the next item to go and I'll test weekly but keep the rest of the diet relatively stable...Thankfully no diabetes despite several family members being T1.....(maybe excessive coffee ain't too good either....?)
Expected some unwinese.... great folly!
Thank you!
6:00 If 52% achieved remission, then 48% did not. I wonder why that is? Did they quit the low carb approach? Did they just need more time? Other reasons?
Thank you.
❤Love the Unwins❤
The first time I got out of dialysis i was eating totally cooked.
so great with evidance data
Can anyone help me I have eaten a plant based diet for 7 years high carb and was wondering if I could do a low carb version by eating the fruit and vegetables recommended by Dr Asseem Malhotra and add olive oil avocado nuts and seeds. Thank you
The most important question to ask yourself is, where will I get protein? That is the difficulty most vegans face.
What about important B vitamins?
my doctor thinks I am too far Right on the low carb diet (less than 20 carbs Per day) I think he needs to start reading about low carb. Get away from the standard care of treatment
Please connect with John Campbell, your fellow countrymen.
what are the 48% of T2D people doing if low carb doesnt work
I have lipoedema. What does the body do with fat it doesn't need. I'm told that a higher fat diet can make you more fat
Seriously? C@VID can put up blood sugar?? Major red flag for his credibility right there.
Why is this? Any acute illness can create havoc on the bodies system. Covid is the current virus of our time but I imagine any acute illness can up blood sugar.
Yes! I test my blood glucose every morning and there is a definite spike whenever I am sick. Or sleep badly. I’m guessing it’s the liver manufacturing glucose to help the body fight infection. It’s only logical.. 🙄
