It has been scientifically proven, Vinyl does not have "better sound" it has limited frequencies. It's only a nostalgia and kinesthetic feel you are after, but it is a subjective personal feeling attached to the vinyl sound. Zero Fidelity, John Darko, Steve Guttenberg and many many more still prefers
CD when they want serious listening (even though they have vinyl).
It hurt my ears when you called my first and favorite jazz album "Out of Time" instead of the actual title "Time Out".

When I show off my stereo, I pull out Flim and the BBs Tricycle, Donald Fagen The Nightfly and Peter Gabriel Security, the earliest DDD releases. I bought these on CD when you could only buy CDs in stereo stores, 1985ish. Before I get flamed here for DDD, I have to mention that I have a PhD in analog circuit design, I am one with all of you analog lovers. Alex, thanks for your recommendations and your closing purchasing tips, so valuable.
Any Steely Dan album will do the trick

Great that you mention several genres of music, especially classical. Some people are just stuck on rock or jazz. So much great music available on lp. For those looking for classical labels, Mercury Living Presence, London(blue back)/Decca are some other labels to look out for. Glad I was hitting the yard/estate sales in the late 80's/early 90's when everyone was dumping vinyl for CDs. If one is into physical media, it is a great time to be buying used CDs.
I agree. CD can give very good sound in a good system. Also, who knows if any out of print favorite albums will ever make it to vinyl.
I would add Kevin Grey to that list of engineers. He’s done some amazing albums. Great video. I have quite a few of the albums you mentioned and I agree with you on each of them.

A Walk Across The Rooftops - The Blue Nile - an astonishingly lovely sounding recording. I also enjoy Goldfrapp’s The Seventh Tree, Amused To Death by Roger Waters, Scritti Pollitti’s White Bread, Black Beer, and The Visitors by ABBA - which always sounds great on my system

Some great picks. I would also include pretty much ANY Dire Straits lp, Nil Lofgrin Live, and Diana Krall's Greatest Hits.
All the Dire Straits sound great on mobile fidelity. If I would only get one it would be “Love Over Gold”. The sonics are stunning. The “Live in Paris” album by Diana Krall is also one of my favorite live albums and the sound is great

This is a pretty sweet list! I really appreciate you mentioning the mastering engineers. Very overlooked and very important to the sound of any album. I'm a CD guy because I'm poor and don't have space in my apartment for vinyl, so I use my 2nd Japanese pressing of Quincy Jones' album "The Dude." I love Quincy Jones arrangements and Bruce Swedien's acousonic recording technique, and it's the album Jones and Swedien made right before they made Thriller. Swedien once said in an interview that Bernie Grundman was the best mastering engineer ever. I have a few of his Michael Jackson remasters and they sound amazing.
Thank you for your comments. I do agree that mastering engineers have a lot to do with the albums ultimate sound quality. Nothing wrong with collecting CDs. In fact, a video I did about CD collecting is my most popular video. With a good quality CD player, music can still sound glorious(and it doesn’t need to be an SACD). Thank you for watching
@@AllAboutAlbums Absolutely! Keep up the great work. I just picked up an old Akai portable CD player with 2x oversampling and a 16 bit DAC off ebay and it sounds amazing. I had never seen a portable CD player with more than 1 bit DAC and when I listened to it for the first time, it was like hearing music for the first time. CD's are amazing. Especially pre loudness war CD"s

Interesting about the Beach boys album, none of them played on that album. It was all session musicians. They had a name for them that escapes me right now, but they were responsible for a lot of great music that we all think was someone else. Thank you.
I saw a group of musicians that toured the country maybe 5 years ago. I think they were called something like “The Hit Men”. They all played on other artists studio albums or toured with them and even have some songs they co-wrote. Makes you wonder. Thanks for the comments and thank you for watching

I watched this hoping to see Steely Dans Aja album. At the end he holds up an album of Dire Straits Brothers in Arms. A truly great CD. As he says it’s a triple D recording, all digital. Why would you have an album of this? Also, he is correct, stereo shops played this a lot in the 80s. Always the CD version!
My go-to for all things volume related has always been The Jeff Beck Group, Goin' Down.

Supertramp's Breakfast In America - Mobile Fidelity pressing is probably the best sounding Vinyl I've heard to my ears!

I agree the RCA Living Stereo Gaite Parisienne, but in addition you should have mentioned the significance of this album which cannot
be underestimated. It was one of the very first recordings recorded in stereo (back in 1954), years before the first stereo LP was released. It was recorded direct to 2-track. That being said, the engineers hit it out of the park with this recording.

Seems like the standard faire we hear at hi-fi shows, not terribly interesting in my opinion. Gardot and Jones are elevator music/non offensive hotel lobby bar music. Why not recommend Tori Amos in stead? No real hard rock albums on your list?
Never did get Tori Amos. But that’s ok, we all have different tastes and that’s what makes horse racing.
As far as hard rock, I listened to it for the excitement and raw power. I don’t think of it as something to show off your stereo. Which hard rock albums do you think should be included on my list? I always love to find new music. Thank you for watching
@@AllAboutAlbums Tool - Ænima has some killer tracks. APC - The package is a great test track imo. QOTSA - the whole Songs for the deaf is great. If you don't get Tori Amos, maybe some PJ Harvey? She has some truly beutifull songs, To bring you my love is one of my favourites.
Personally I don't like the 'remastered' editions, I think they take away some of the soul.

David Crosby's solo debut album, "If I Could Only Remember My Name." is a perfect choice to impress friends! There's a 180g 45RPM SuperVinyl 2LP pressing, a 50th Anniversary edition, a color vinyl, the original Atlantic Records Monarch Pressing and others. I prefer the Monarch Pressing.

That Mo‐Fi pressing is definitely the best version of Sea Change, but even the standard pressings sound fantastic. If you don't have a truly high end system you may not even hear much of a difference... at least not hundreds of dollars worth of a difference. It's a fantastic album any way you listen to it.

The only thing I would like to say is the Doors,all there albums were recorded and engineered Great.They sounded great when I bought them in the late 60s to early 70s.i had great equipment no young guys owned at the time.Their albums sound excellent and you really can save your money and not buy a rather expensive mofi recordings .But I do like your channel,keep up the great job.

Typical favourites might be songs in the key of life stevie wonder, live at leeds the who, boston by boston, eldorado by the elo, mirage by camel time out dave brubeck. Beach boys let sounds (well yes) the beatles revolver (my copy is in mono so how good that's gonna be with stereo idk but it is my fave album of theirs)
Tame impala currents and mgmt congratulations are there to bring us into this century (i must say congratulations is a great album at least in my opinion)

Doobie Bros " you're made that way", Al Dimeola "Elegant Gypsy Suite", Boz Scaggs " harbor lights", sting " fortress around your heart", Joe Jackson " stepping out" , Robert Cray " right next door because of me", Sade - " Maureen", Chicago " hanky panky / lifesaver", steely Dan " black cow", Bruce Springsteen " tenth Avenue Freezeout"

@@AllAboutAlbums Honeydrippers is my go to for testing equipment and equalizing. That song has string bass, the ride cymbal along with the trumpets to get your highs just right, and the layered vocals let you tweak the midrange. From there, I play a UK12inch extended mix of Hall and Oates " one on one", which is a drum machine solo, to make sure I didn't go too crazy with the string bass adjustments, as most of what I'll play will not have string bass. I don't even play that whole thing, just the beginning. Then Harbor Lights has a lot of light and shade, to make sure I didn't emphasize vocals too much, as the vocals on that song go huge suddenly. Then I play " you're made that way" to make sure the overalls sound good. Then top it off with Elegant Gypsy Suite for final check
10th Avenue is the only track that sounds good on that aweful production.
So glad to see Sea Change on here. Fantastic album! Ummm... also it's $600 on ebay.

Just curious, all other things being equal, why would you get mono instead of stereo?
Most audiophiles would argue that you should listen to the album as it was recorded. So, if the artist intended a mono recording, then that’s the way you should listen. I’m not saying that is correct, just how some listeners feel. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching
This episode may or may not be a good place to start. Or perhaps an idea for a new episode topic, have you got a list of “headphone” albums? Albums that have a lot of things flying around in stereo. Sgt Pepper is an obvious choice. Many Pink Floyd and especially Roger Waters’ Amused to Death is a great headphone album. Queensryche Operation Mindcrime.
I like to blow my 10 year olds mind with cool stereo effects on a recording.

How did you screw up the names of both the Brubeck and Beck albums? Worth noting: 'Ella and Louis', despite its magnificence in every other way, is a MONO album. In this way it becomes great speaker setup test record to make sure you're getting your L+R balance and sound pressure correct. Bizarrely you also recommended the REMIXED 2019 version of 'Abbey Road', and despite best efforts and a decent lacquer cut and resulting pressing, this 2019 MIX is inferior to the original. For less than 1/3 the cost of the MFSL, you can get a 2-lp version of 'What's Going On' cut by Kevin Gray!

Analog Productions have been putting out some of the best sounding classical albums. They recently did Beethoven’s 6th symphony that is incredible along with Copelands Appalachian Spring. Beautiful stuff.
I agree that Analogue Productions has many great classical titles. They are all outstanding in sound quality. I also own several classical titles by them.

It seems as if this video needs to be edited to address Mobile Fidelity's "one-step" process which has recently been exposed to NOT be one-step.

I'll say there are a lot of great sounding albums. I'll throw out three for you to consider. This one is older, a bit hard to find, It's Immaterial - Song. Amazing sounding album for 1990. Second, this one is new, and it really surprised me, considering the Artist has been a bit lazy, in my opinion, lately with his albums, it is Morrissey - I Am not a dog On A Chain. Third, Stefano Guzzetti - Lumen. These will definitely show off your stereo system I'd put these all on great albums for headphones too that you did awhile back. (Also, got to agree with What's Going On, that album will make you cry it so brilliant)

Would the CD versions of these be a close enough experience? I have a decent Vinyl setup, but some of these can be pricey on Vinyl vs CD 💿

The Beck LP is great sounding. Unfortunately the Mofi pressing goes for ridiculously high sums now. Out of interest, what turntables don’t have the ability to play 45s?
That statement has apparently bothered several viewers. My first turntable was rather cheap(age of 12). It would automatically bring the tonearm down only at the outer margin of the turntable. It could not play any 45rpm singles. Thank you for watching

@All About Albums the DGC reissue is thought by some on SHF to be from the same metal work AS the MoFi and, if it's not, it's supposed to be indistinguishable. I have the 2016 DGC and it's without a doubt one of the greatest sounding albums in my collection.

Very insightful video - personal musical taste notwithstanding. However, I do have a bone to pick with you regarding the mastering engineer segment.
I'm a veteran recording engineer that has worked with most of the mastering engineers that you mention, and I agree that they are the best in their fields - truly master craftsmen - and I don't want to diminish their importance. However, the reason an album sounds as good or as bad as it does is not because of the mastering engineer but because of the RECORDING ENGINEER. A mastering engineer will spend perhaps one or 2 days on your record whereas the recording engineer (along with the producer and artist) will spend weeks, months and even years creating the sonic experience that you enjoy as the final product. In my experience (30 years) a great mastering session will add perhaps 10 to 15% to a final product, whereas poor mastering can destroy what everyone has spent so much time creating.
Adding some final eq and perhaps compression doesn't transform an inferior recording into a great recording. Mastering will not "create" something that is not already on the master tapes that are sent to them. You didn’t talk enough about ECM; Jarret, Garbarek, Towner…spacious, lovely, you are there recordings. On this label alone, I can find several better albums than you provide here. Of course there is musical taste. What about Boys and Girls by Bryan Ferry, Avalon by Roxy Music; Talk Talk Spring. Agree on all RCA recommendations, Belafonte, glorious. How about Renaissance Novella, Blue Nile. You want a Bass Che mouth, try King Crimson Islands, my father thought I was knocking down the house, he was so pissed at me…the walls will shake with the band setting up on stage….
ECM is a great label. Many viewers agree with you on Avalon. It was an album I just listened to for the great music and never actually focused on sound quality. Blue Nile is another great one. None of my Renaissance albums I would consider exceptional sound but I may not own first pressings. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching

I was asked about that. I had a cheap turntable when I was maybe 12 that only worked on 33 1/3 rpm. The needle automatically dropped only at the outer edge of the platter.

I got the 1977 Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's Abbey Road when it was first issued. Plus I have an Apple Record's version of Abbey Road prior to the Mofi version.
How is the sound quality of the MoFi? They don’t always get it right.
@@AllAboutAlbums It's very dymanic compared the Apple version and the disc is much quieter. I have a few records from when Mofi first released their catalog , i.e. Steely Dan's "Katy Lied" and John Klemmer's "Touched"

Frank zappa recorded some great stuff, diana krall. Unlimited orchestra by the league. Black sabbath first album. B52s.. Robbie and sly anything, all great recordings, fleetwood mac, a good copy of early pink floyd.. Brubeck, Stan getz quartet records, chet baker, John coltrane albums, free wheeling bob dylan.. I have always thought that decent jazz sounds better through valve amps with transmission line speakers like imf tls 50.. Amazing what sound you can get for reasonable money.. Love valve amps because you can still buy nos valves for the pre and power stages of your amp to get the sound that matches your speakers. We are all chasing the point of closing our eyes and get the feeling we have the band in the room with us..
I hear you and agree with you about valve amps. I have used tubes for the past 15 years and the sound is glorious.
There are many other great sounding albums that I could not mention in the time of a reasonable length video. Jazz albums do typically have better sound than a standard pop or rock album. Likely related to the folks buying those albums being more critical in their purchase. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching
