The 85 bears will never be matched. It's a different game now. "DA BEARS".
After watching the 2015 Denver Broncos once again demonstrate that dominating defense will always triumph (after GM John Elway actually learned from his 2013 Seattle Seahawks experience), I had to come back here yet again, and relive memories of the greatest defense that EVER was ... and frankly, the team that changed how the game is played. Seriously, some of their stats boggle the mind, and might in fact be impossible under the current offense-favoring rules. But for the offense turning it over early and giving the Patriots a field goal, and the Patriots later scoring a TD in garbage time when the Bears couldn't play for a shutout, the 1985 Chicago Bears would have been unscored upon throughout the playoffs. That's ... incomprehensible.
Greatest defense plus the best football player and running back of all time. An just 1 sad super bowl while other teams can run off 2 or 3 or 4 in 10 years. Shitacular ownership has held the Bears back 45+ years minimum. As the refusal to understand what good modern offense is and coaching. Here is hoping Nagy is the real deal. Still wish we had different ownership.....
You cannot win SB's without your starting qb and your dc. That's what happened in 86. Why can't people understand that? And they still went 13-3 in 86.
@@@rudolphguarnacci197 You certainly know of this same pain, but you have had far better QB recent play then us til we took Mitch. An you had Herm Edwards a better coach then anyone we had other then Lovie and now Nagy.
I was at every home game!! Girlfriend was a Captain of the Honeybears lol. THE BEST COOLEST AWESOME ENTERTAINING TEAM EVER !!!! I'm Blessed to have seen Them!!👍
Best Super Bowl party I've ever been to! 2 TV's had the game on. A 3rd TV/VCR played the Super Bowl Shuffle, non-stop. We started out dancing and never stopped.
Smart teammates who played their hearts out who inspired everyone around them with phenomenal coaches and fans & never forget the support of their families 🏈🏆
Diehard Steelers fan, had season tickets to the Steelers from 1975 to 1985. I I watched the GREATEST defense play LIVE, the 1976 Steelers. Even ESPN rated them #1, and the statistics are sick to how many shutouts there were, but let me tell you, the 85 BEARS had more characters and more flavor then any other team, and if I had to choose which one I would take, I’d HONESTLY take the 85 BEARS OVER the Steelers, and just mentioning this here I would be disowned by family and several friends. So saying this on here is REALLY making a statement coming from me. Let me just say one more thing, I still think without Otis Wilson, Wilbur Marshall, and Gary Fencik, that team is NOTHING. Those three STARS, WHO SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME, receive absolutely NO CREDIT WHATSOEVER, because Singletary receives all the accolades. Don’t get me wrong, Mike was a STAR by himself, but those three I mentioned, are disregarded as stars, and thought of as just GOOD players. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Go watch the films, even when they left the Bears, they still made Pro-Bowls. Oh I love the three HOF’s from the defense, Hampton, Dent, and Mike, but the unsung heroes are Wilbur, Gary, and Otis. Just as I’m not a Cowboys fan, but how can Pearson, Charley Waters, and Cliff Harris NOT be in the Hall of Fame??? Or the one that bothers me the MOST is Kenny Stabler??? NO ONE was bigger in Meaningful Games then Ken Stabler. Forget the stats, just look at the Contributions those players I mentioned made to put all of them with Super Bowl wins for a lengthy period. As I said, saying those players belong in the Hall, Kenny, Cliff, etc, is saying something since I HATE Dallas and the Raiders. But I’m ALWAYS on the level, just as Donnie Shell from my team belongs in the HALL OF FAME, but will never be considered. Maybe one day all those talented players from the 1970s and 80s will wear the Yellow coat. If you didn’t have the opportunity to see these players play, go watch the films. It’s like watching Eric Dickerson, so much grace and talent. Thank as for reading this, and I wrote this from my VA hospital bed, Semper Fidelis, Captain T, U.S.M.C.
Maury Buford was the punter on that team. He's from my hometown of Mt. Pleasant Texas. He wasn't used very much that year. Another thing, another homeboy Barry Minter was a linebacker for the Bears years later.
I knew Detroit RB Wilbert Montgomery and asked him once was there anyone he FEARED in his playing career? He thought for a moment and said " I don't know if I FEARED anyone but I certainly went out of my way to know where Wilbur Marshall was at all times because if a play was called to his side of the field? You just prayed someone would get to you before he did".... Now THAT'S a legacy!!
In the early and mid 80s I ate, breathed, and slept Chicago Bears. My then young son and I met Walter Payton. Honestly, it has been very difficult to be a Bears fan since.☹️
I lived in the Quad Cities through the 70's and had been a fan since the 60s. They were awful, a laughingstock (The Abe Gibron Era), and were on about a 4 decade-long string of bad quarterback play. Bobbie Douglass. Vince Evans. Bob Avellini. and on and on. So when 83 happened, and then 84 happened (72 sacks, opp
Wasn't that defense even better the following year? I know they didn't get to the Super bowl, but I think statistically they got better....that's mind-boggling
Yes, in 86' the defense was better. However, part of what makes 85' so special is that playoff run. They shut out the New York Giants in the divisional round, then shut out the L.A. Rams in the NFL championship game and then defeated the Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX. If you can get a chance to watch those three games, do it. They're a thing of defensive beauty.
The big difference was the loss of Buddy Ryan. Where it was felt the most was in the giveaway/takeway category. They went from around +20 to close to even. The emphasis on pressure was no longer there and many of the Bears on defense didn't like it. I think they would have won a second Super Bowl if Buddy Ryan had stayed.
For some reason, I begin to imagine the modern PFL (Pansy Football League) penalizing these guys for their bone-crushing, lowered-helmet, etc. hits. But they keep doing it. And then they keep doing it. Then, after about seven or so 15-yard penalties to put the enemy offense on the goal line...the drive NEVER ENDS, because the penalties can never give more than half the distance to the goal, once down in close...but the offense CANNOT get in. Or do you think they'd just eject all the '85 Bears' starters, for winning the sport of football?
***** Then I'd say that the D-Linemen's complaints about the refs treating the QBs like crystal vases (touch them and they'll shatter) is absolutely hilarious.
While the 2024 Bears have yet to play a game, I'm anxiously waiting, what with all the moves GM Ryan Poles has made during the offseason, including drafting Caleb Williams number one. I watched a replay of the Bears-Bengals game from August 17, 2024, and from what I've seen of Williams' playing ability, he far outshone Justin Fields, and Poles was right in trading him to Pittsburgh. And while the '24 Bears won't have the same defense as the '85 Bears had, they'll still be exciting to watch. Go Bears!
2000 Ravens Denfense would give them a run for their money as regards to the greatest defensive of all time. In addition in this post showed the bears had a really good offense as well. The Ravens won the Superbowl with the worst offense in league history. All they had was their defense. They're probably the team in history to make the Superbowl on fieldgoals from their offense. M
To me the most underrated player on defense was cornerback Leslie Frasier. With all the blitzing the corners were often 1 on 1 with the receiver. Richardson was good too but Frazier was their best corner.
This...is what "Bears" football is all about. Let the ownership take notice. It is time for the Monsters of the Midway to take their panties off and be MONSTERS again....and I hope the 91 year old owner is listening. Bears are known to hit, and hit freaking hard. You come from a Bears game, bleeding, hurting, plain and simple...ready to look for your graveyard plot.
You can't play like that anymore. It is a different era now. That old style football will not work. It is time for the Bears to finally enter the modern era if they are even going to win again. Hell even in the 1980s the Bears only won one title. Look at the Skins, Giants and Niners of the 80s they are the ones who won multiple titles
We all lived our lives more passionately back then, no masks, not hiding in basements, not living in fear, just taking life as it came and striving to live life to it's fullest! Now, fast forward to 2022.......
+Sheldor Shah Yes we are a disgrace. Fuck cutler. Still, I'd take one '85 Bear's team over ANY other team with multiple SB victories. And YES, the packers will always suck....ugh, living in wimpsconsin, everything smelling like rancid budweiser and stale cheese. Brewers...LMFAO.
Chainsaw Mendes I cant stand losing every year! The definititon of DEFENSE was the 85'Bears, now the definition os SUCK is the current Chicago Bears!! None of the good players like Urlacher,Peppers,Peanut,Hester,Briggs,Forte,Knox, etc. are there!! YAh feel me?! Ugh. anyway the only good thing is we beat the packers this season lol !
I'll never forget in Minnesota when Jim McMahon came off the bench gave the metal finger to the fans and threw 3 touchdown passes if I remember correctly unbelievable he had a drive and a willingness to win he wasn't the greatest quarterback but he was there to beat you
+Kevin Lukas haha no joke. I may be a guy in the younger generation, I was born in the 90's, but I always liked watching NFL films, classic games, and A football Life. Mainly because I liked seeing the evolution of the game. The game may have had a slower pace and didn't look as flashy as it does now, but I can tell that it was much more physical and wearing on players before the 2000's. Not to say that it still is but the way the pace and of the game is played has changed dramatically. the play calls and officiating is much more in favor of the offense, and as a result Defenses are allowed to do so much less. like prior to 2004 horse collars were allowed, or back in the day Deacon Jones would literally hit at the linemen to get to the quarterback, or the helmet to helmet contact tackling the bears are doing in this video. I'm also aware that the health of the players is important but there are some defensive techniques that should be brought back. My biggest one is the restrictions on Corner-back play. They can't even have a finger on the receiver after 5 yards otherwise a damn flag gets thrown. Even stuff like the unintentional helmet contact that happens when there's a sack, DE has his chin up but barely initiates contact on ht QB's mask and it still draws a penalty, it bugs the hell out of me. Might as well be two hand touch or one hand touch in a few years.
Murphy08 you could not have said that better. I feel that if some of the defensive players from the '85 Bears were to play today like they did back in 85, they'd basically be playing for free lol because of all the fines they would get. Football was better to watch in the 80's with all those hard hits and that '85 Bears defensive team knocking out quarterbacks and scaring every offense they played against.
+Kevin Lukas yep!!! no kidding, The defenses now are still fast, but that physicality of the game has really toned down. I can only watch replays of games, I'm always watching films or videos of old school showdowns from back in the day. Certain postions don't have the focus on them anymore. The RB is my favorite my favorite player, but the physical traits for that position have changed so much in the past couple of decades. these days the RB is smaller and lankier(slimmer). Or Even the blocking TE. most Tight Ends are used as a spare reciever.
That shot at 4:43 is all you need to know, pressure yes, but do you ever see a lineman today making tackles 4 feet off the ground? These guys were all 3 and 4 down players, real athletes in every sense; not these guys today who's job it is to clog up the middle of the field and come off on 3rd down. '85 Bears playing the 46 had 3 HOFers and could have been at least 3 more if their careers shook out a bit differently. Shame they couldn't keep it together for longer because this was a dynasty in the making..
As a Packer fan I hate to admit it, but this was the best defense ever. Opposing offenses would go backwards against this defense. Heck, they moved the ball towards their goal line better than their own offense.
Aaron would tear this defense apart remember not a lot of elite qbs that year only the one they lost to Dan plus how come only one championship from legendary defenses
It is the greatest defense I have ever seen play the game. Every person was great. Every person was passionate, hit like a truck and never relented. It was truly incredible see. They physically and mentally beat you up minutes into the game. There was no weakness. In fact, once the Bears scored 7 to 10 points, fans knew the game was won! Truly there has never been a defense like this in NFL history.
Why can't they do that...NOW ? The League has killed all Defense in favor of a run & gun, hands off, Offense and, Football will never be the same agn. ..and.. it will never be as exciting agn !!!....Too Bad !!!
***** Not the NFL, really? No one's blameless but NFL would top the list. What was the average IQ of a ball player, do you really think any of these guys knew about the long term effects, concussions, peds and pain killers have in the human body to a level that would allow them to make an informed choice as to whether or not to take them? Maybe most still would but allowing such cultures to exist in environments where they could be abused due to ignorance isn't acting with integrity or in the the players best interests. Isn't that what the rules of the NFL are supposed to do. Are you telling me well educated people in the NFL didn't know and understand what risks were involved? Of course they knew, but they were making money. Not excusing the players because they were grown men but these guys ain't Law graduates from Harvard. They were taken advantage of plain and simple.
I agree with everything you have said but, the fly in the buttermilk is this virtually every one of those players, had they known all of the risks, right up front, would have played anyway. For the Fame & the Money they would have garnered.
Dam it Dana!!! When I glimpsed your comment I thought it said 'every one' no fly's in my buttermilk...then I saw the virtually:/ Yeah man, agree with you there now I don't have to go on about the exceptions...which would have been few I guess, because of greed, like you said. It's a shame with the amount of money that's in the game they couldn't have come to some kind of arrangement to help though. The game might not have ended up so diluted if they had.
Sunshine, I am 67 years old and started watching NFL Football in 1956! [Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Game] I remember the days of great Defense and loved it !! I hate watching the Refs throw a flag on every other play ! They are stopping the players from playing their game and destroying continuity and momentum, which determines the outcome of the game.It is not the same today as it was in the old days ! Sure we see more points..but,at the great expense of those things that made Football exciting, to me and many others. There is far too much Celebration after plays and individual Accolades. This is a Team sport,Not a field for self aggrandizement, IMO. Dana
Seeing the Cubs win a World Series doesn’t compare watching this team smash their way to a Super Bowl win. The commentator said maybe the best defense ever ?????? By far the best. No opposing qb played the next week. They truly were The Monsters Of The Midway. Great everlasting memories.

W gotge
Greatest defense plus the best football player and running back of all time. An just 1 sad super bowl while other teams can run off 2 or 3 or 4 in 10 years. Shitacular ownership has held the Bears back 45+ years minimum. As the refusal to understand what good modern offense is and coaching. Here is hoping Nagy is the real deal. Still wish we had different ownership.....
You cannot win SB's without your starting qb and your dc. That's what happened in 86. Why can't people understand that? And they still went 13-3 in 86.
Their defense was still number one in the league and actually IMPROVED overall. McMahon getting hurt was the biggest thing that hurt them.
What about us jets fans dying over 50 years for a second superbowl victory?
@@@rudolphguarnacci197 You certainly know of this same pain, but you have had far better QB recent play then us til we took Mitch. An you had Herm Edwards a better coach then anyone we had other then Lovie and now Nagy.
I was at every home game!! Girlfriend was a Captain of the Honeybears lol.
THE BEST COOLEST AWESOME ENTERTAINING TEAM EVER !!!!
I'm Blessed to have seen Them!!👍
I'm from the southside of Chicago and I was in highschool at the time and enjoyed every bit of it. I love this team.
Love them boys the new bears defence is going to be great too
I was lucky enough to have lived in Chicago back in 1984 - 1985.
What a 🏈 time to be alive.
4:39 Lord he literally PILE-DROVE that poor guy.
We’ll never see another team like the 85 Bears again. The characters on that team from the coach to the players. Good times. Bear down!!!
The Greatest team in Chicago's History, and definitely the Greatest Defense PERIOD!!!!🎶🎶 AND I'M NOT HERE TO START NO TROUBLE 🎶 🏈
I’ll never forget that Super Bowl year for the Bears. They were unbelievable and it was such a fun season to watch growing up.
Mike Singletary is like the only 85 bear that is in awesome shape!
He's had too much cocaine lol
@Ulysses432 add Botox. Lots
@Ulysses432 good try bro
@Ulysses432 of course, because I don't try, I get it done. Just like McMahon got cocaine done 😂
The greatest...GO BEARS.
I cant think of ANYONE who doesnt respect the "85" Bears, they were fun to watch on both sides of the ball and Im a life long Raider fan.
Man i wish the Bears would play with heart and passion now instead of playing for a paycheck. We need to go back.
In the early and mid 80s I ate, breathed, and slept Chicago Bears. My then young son and I met Walter Payton. Honestly, it has been very difficult to be a Bears fan since.☹️
This makes what Marino did to them all the more impressive...
Marino did have some help from the Marks brothers that Monday night in the Orange Bowl.
Pack fan here. Too young to remember the Lombardi days. 85 Bears are easily the best team I've ever seen.
I know they didn't get to the Super bowl, but I think statistically they got better....that's mind-boggling
fromanotherstar You are correct. Just something about that group. Bunch of wild dogs in that '85 team. **Barking** I turned 13 during that season.
fromanotherstar 1984 Bears defense recorded 72 sacks. NFL record still
Yes, in 86' the defense was better.
The 85 🐻 started the barking first and then the Browns and their fans started doing it and tried to say they started it.
They are the best defense ever, period.
I WISH THE 2014 TEAM , ESPECIALLY THE COACH TRESTMAN WOULD WATCH THIS A FEW TIMES.
Yepp
Trestman isn't the coach dumbass
Dude I know I was trying to tick him off apparently it worked
One of the best defenses ever. Then you got Jimmy Mac, Walter Payton, Willie Gault on the other side. Jimbo Covert. Ditka. Da Bears
The 85 Bears were amazing! Die hard Bears fan here.
The 1985 Miami dolphin line blew the bears off the ball 31 to10 at half . Game over !
And lost to the patriots in the playoffs. So what
For some reason, I begin to imagine the modern PFL (Pansy Football League) penalizing these guys for their bone-crushing, lowered-helmet, etc.
What if I told you it was the players who wanted the league to be the way it is today?
***** Then I'd say that the D-Linemen's complaints about the refs treating the QBs like crystal vases (touch them and they'll shatter) is absolutely hilarious.
Its that time of year. Bears fans go back and watch the 85 team. I guess it gives us a little hope.
4:57 Wilbur Marshall really knocked out Ferguson.
Didn't he Man!!!!
Go Bears!
Thank you, love it, I wish it would happen again.❤
#RESTINPARADISE Buddy Ryan
The funnest year in my life watching football 🏈 was the 85 Bears.🐻
saw like 15 "roughing the passer" in todays game anyways
James Godfrey That's why old football is so much god damn better.
😆
Even more relevant today 😂😂 entire team would’ve been ejected
James Godft
Ejections too.lol
As Vikings fan loved the 85 Bears and Mike Ditka Monsters 👻 of the Midway awesome and the Super Bowl shuffle
Never saw anybody tackle like Fencik. If he got a finger on you, you were as good as down.
+Jerome Taperman fencik..ronnie lot...dont make safeties like that anymore..
+PRO INC kam chancellor. He can hit pretty damn hard.
yes..he can...i do like him..
but to watch the ol school safeties HIT was awesome...
Jerome Taperman yeah but his former teammate Doug Plank was worse, if you saw him 2 seconds later he was running through you at 18 mph
Kelly 19202 The "46" Defense was named after #46, Doug Plank.
Never saw any other team ..as good as these guys ..before or after
2000 Ravens Denfense would give them a run for their money as regards to the greatest defensive of all time.
They passed every eye test known to mankind.
4:00-4:24. There are sooo many hits and tackles that would be flagged in today’s game lol. Wow.
Good thing, so many players with concussions now
BlackIsBeautiful Exactly......🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥.....
As good as they were, you cannot forget what Dan Marino and the Don Shula did to them on Monday night football. Classic Marino.
38 points and 335 yards of total offense
We all lived our lives more passionately back then, no masks, not hiding in basements, not living in fear, just taking life as it came and striving to live life to it's fullest! Now, fast forward to 2022.......
i miss this, we suck now! we r a disgrace to the 1985 bears and walter payton! I bet McMahoan could play better now at 60 than cutler
+Sheldor Shah FUCKIN' A MY BROTHER ! I hate the fucking packers.
I agree
No disgrace anymore
I'll never forget in Minnesota when Jim McMahon came off the bench gave the metal finger to the fans and threw 3 touchdown passes if I remember correctly unbelievable he had a drive and a willingness to win he wasn't the greatest quarterback but he was there to beat you
Best team of all time easy
Something special about a well coached defense with the perfect pieces to run it with a 100% efficiency.
Imagine what football will be like in 60 years....
One hand touch
Murphy08 lol most likely. Two hands and the refs will call a penalty
I'll never forget that season.
That team captured the interest of the nation.
The 1985 Miami Dolphins figured it out and was the only team to beat the 85 Bears😂🤣😂
No they didn't bears played prevent defense all game
Only because Jim McMahon didn't play that game
To this date 3-9-2023 I still enjoy watching the bears highlights
Aaron would tear this defense apart remember not a lot of elite qbs that year only the one they lost to Dan plus how come only one championship from legendary defenses
i miss them)8
It is the greatest defense I have ever seen play the game.
Mongo was the psychological edge of our defense. I love hearing about him staring at opposing teams during warm ups lol
Why can't they do that...NOW ? The League has killed all Defense in favor of a run & gun, hands off, Offense and, Football will never be the same agn. ..and..
it will never be as exciting agn !!!....Too Bad !!!
***** And who's fault do you think that was? Not the NFL. I can tell you that.
I agree with everything you have said but, the fly in the buttermilk is this
virtually every one of those players, had they known all of the risks, right up front, would have played anyway.
Dana
I remember seeing Eric Dickerson from the Rams looking at the their schedule and seeing when they played the Bears...he wasn't looking forward to it.
Seeing the Cubs win a World Series doesn’t compare watching this team smash their way to a Super Bowl win. The commentator said maybe the best defense ever ?????? By far the best. No opposing qb played the next week. They truly were The Monsters Of The Midway. Great everlasting memories.
You couldn't just play you had to think!! That 85' Bears was just part to see.
