The 1985 season was only the third one that was broadcast on UK TV and although the Bears weren’t my team, the memory of them is still vivid. They were better defensively than any team I’ve ever seen. The 2000 Ravens were good, and there are a few people on this thread mentioning the 2013 Broncos, but the 85 Bears basically broke traditional offensive concepts in the NFL. Most teams basic offense in those days went two wides, one tight end, and two backs is how I remember it. With those personnel groupings, it was almost impossible to pick up all of the blitzes because they could still send Fencik or Duerson over and above the front seven and that is making the very big assumption that your OL, TE and backs could actually block their assigned men. A lot of the time they couldn’t, and it was just chaos. Absolute chaos. The 46 was probably never quite as effective after 85 because the Bears saw more shotgun and spread formations and also because, hey, it’s the NFL. Very clever, very highly paid people watched the film and did their best to come up with solutions But any system is only as good as its personnel, and the Bears D, as well as being big, strong, fast and violent, were all smart, smart football players, which is why they were still successful long after the 46 was shelved. When your DL has three HOF’s and your MLB is a HOF then they are going to be able to dominate in any scheme you put them in. And in any era. A final word for my favourite player on the Bears D, Wilber Marshall, who should absolutely be in the Hall of Fame and who might still be paying for being one of the first big name free agents to actually change teams when he moved to Washington. Just the complete linebacker. For any younger viewers out there, just think of him as a slightly better Derrick Brooks.
Miamai figured out, cleaned there clock on Monday night football that year..They wanted that pressure and were equipped to deal with it. quick release and two quick receivers who could catch over the middle
To me the most underrated player on defense was cornerback Leslie Frasier. With all the blitzing the corners were often 1 on 1 with the receiver. Richardson was good too but Frazier was their best corner.
While the 2024 Bears have yet to play a game, I'm anxiously waiting, what with all the moves GM Ryan Poles has made during the offseason, including drafting Caleb Williams number one. I watched a replay of the Bears-Bengals game from August 17, 2024, and from what I've seen of Williams' playing ability, he far outshone Justin Fields, and Poles was right in trading him to Pittsburgh. And while the '24 Bears won't have the same defense as the '85 Bears had, they'll still be exciting to watch. Go Bears!
1:11. I remember that game. The only thing that stood in the way of the Bears having a perfect season was their 38-24 loss to the Dan Marino led Miami Dolphins. They did blow out the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 20, though.
I remember feeling like I was part of the team when the defense was foaming at the mouth because I felt that way too. It was such a joy to watch because they were ruthless and they never stopped and it was something absolutely incredible to watch that defense shut down play after play after play. They had a swagger, they had relentless passion, they were ready to destroy you. They were a true aggressive football team! They were the best defense ever!
Poor Steve McMichael I met him back then what happened to him with this disease but they're coming to him and they're giving him everything for the hall of fame you gotta watch It it's beautiful
I'll never forget in Minnesota when Jim McMahon came off the bench gave the metal finger to the fans and threw 3 touchdown passes if I remember correctly unbelievable he had a drive and a willingness to win he wasn't the greatest quarterback but he was there to beat you
Lmao, Singletary talking about how the guys were talking about taking out the QB is one of my favorite moments from NFL Films. "You don't have to kill the guy!" "We don't care. We're gonna get him!" Gotta love a defense that gets after it like that.
I was 2 yrs old while this was going on. If I were a few years older at this time Im sure I would be a Bears fan to this day and I dont even live in Illinois. What an awesome group of guys they were.
This idea that the 85 Bears were one of the greatest teams is a joke..The Bears played in the weakest division in the league and played those teams twice that year...the Lions, Buccaneers, Packers, and Vikngs...
I'm 65 and watched un"bear"able football in 70s. As a child I loved the 60s butkis Sayers picalo ditka the 70s. Hard to watch like they are now. But 77 they drafted sweetness. I'm going to get emotional. He was as pure joy to watch as he was to hear talk. Rip Walter. But in 70s I saw a QB at BYU and couldn't believe Pappa bear chose number 9. Jimmy Mac. I knew them the pieces were coming together. Oh my gosh. Did they. Each one of them came to the line of scrimmage with the tools. And nobody since has ever equaled what they did. The 85 bears will never be matched. It's a different game now. "DA BEARS".
"In 1985, _no one_ figured it out." Um, _WRONG._ Don Shula, Dan Marino, and the Miami Dolphins _DID_ figure it out. Miami 38 Chicago 24 The _ONLY_ blemish on their record, but it was there nonetheless.
I lived in the Quad Cities through the 70's and had been a fan since the 60s. They were awful, a laughingstock (The Abe Gibron Era), and were on about a 4 decade-long string of bad quarterback play. Bobbie Douglass. Vince Evans. Bob Avellini. and on and on. So when 83 happened, and then 84 happened (72 sacks, opp <50% passing!), and it seemed like the D could not get any better...and then 85 happened and WOW! It was a joy, and those of us who had rooted for the Bears through the lean years didn't care if they won 17 straight games by 40 pts, each and injured 15 opponents every game...WE deserved it. It was delirious, wonderful, ecstatic. A very special season. So fun! I remember a couple of games when the Bears took out a QB, then the backup went down and you'd look for their "emergency" QB, usually a punter or WR, and they'd be hiding, head down, in with the O-Linemen. Really funny.
It is the greatest defense I have ever seen play the game. Every person was great. Every person was passionate, hit like a truck and never relented. It was truly incredible see. They physically and mentally beat you up minutes into the game. There was no weakness. In fact, once the Bears scored 7 to 10 points, fans knew the game was won! Truly there has never been a defense like this in NFL history.
I dont care what anybody says about Jim McMahon was one of the best QBs I've ever seen play the Game. They say he's kind of a Jerk but I don't care.He the QB that took the Bears to the Super Bowl and won it.Ill never see another one I highly Doubt.Jim Deserves to Gloat He did it they all did.Super Bowl winners aren't something that's given to anybody. As bad as you wanna win the Super Bowl the Guy lined up acrossed the Line from you wants the exact same thing.Theres Really Good Football players that have never won a Super Bowl.Dan Marino Fran Tarkington Phil Kelly I dint think he won any.He got there but I don't think he won any
That shot at 4:43 is all you need to know, pressure yes, but do you ever see a lineman today making tackles 4 feet off the ground? These guys were all 3 and 4 down players, real athletes in every sense; not these guys today who's job it is to clog up the middle of the field and come off on 3rd down. '85 Bears playing the 46 had 3 HOFers and could have been at least 3 more if their careers shook out a bit differently. Shame they couldn't keep it together for longer because this was a dynasty in the making..
In the early and mid 80s I ate, breathed, and slept Chicago Bears. My then young son and I met Walter Payton. Honestly, it has been very difficult to be a Bears fan since.☹️
Seeing the Cubs win a World Series doesn’t compare watching this team smash their way to a Super Bowl win. The commentator said maybe the best defense ever ?????? By far the best. No opposing qb played the next week. They truly were The Monsters Of The Midway. Great everlasting memories.
Back when you could play the game. No pussy footin around with protecting the qb. No ticky tacky PI calls. And certainly no Las Vegas and legal gambling causing games to have the same outcome, team a beating team b by 13. By the time you have 2:30 left in the game team b is within 1 score for the win/tie. Then on a crucial drive/possession the refs either blow a call or call a phantom/questionable flag giving whatever team benefits Vegas the win. Case in point the superbowl 2023
How dominate were these Bears? Well in the same decade guys on the Redskins, Giants, 49ers, and Raiders were going to multiple Superbowls AND winning them, these Bear players managed to get to a whopping 1 Superbowl.
There was never anyone like the Dancing Bear. Hats off to Walter Peyton, one of a kind, 100 percent on every single play, play after play, year after year. And Mike Singletary...This man was a thinker as much as one of the best linebackers ever.

No disrespect to the 2000 Ravens but this defense was the greatest ever. Opposing offenses definitely earned their money playing these guys. 🤕
To me the most underrated player on defense was cornerback Leslie Frasier. With all the blitzing the corners were often 1 on 1 with the receiver. Richardson was good too but Frazier was their best corner.

I was at Soldier Field with my now late father Ray in '84 and watched Payton break the record
He got over 81 million votes, more than any president in history. My ass

Quarterbacks on other teams ...scared as helll
Wow . What a team 85 bears were
That was fixed
I was 2 yrs old while this was going on. If I were a few years older at this time Im sure I would be a Bears fan to this day and I dont even live in Illinois. What an awesome group of guys they were.
Marino figured it out !
This idea that the 85 Bears were one of the greatest teams is a joke..The Bears played in the weakest division in the league and played those teams twice that year...the Lions, Buccaneers, Packers, and Vikngs...
Gotta love Mike Singletary!!!!
The best defense EVER frfrfr

The best single season team in NFL history
The funnest year in my life watching football 🏈 was the 85 Bears.🐻
I’m a Giant fan and it pains me to say that 85 bears D was the greatest ever
RIP Ditka
and the reason they lost to the dolphins was because fuller got injured
the only team that came close to them was the steelers in terms of defense
im a cubs fan and i remember my dad crying when the Cubs won the world series
This all about sweetness
wonder how well they would against 90s cowboys, or 70s raiders offensive line
Apples n oranges go have bud light
@@Zzus321 na thats your beer bozo
You will never see a defensive team like this ever again. So many rule changes have changed how the game can be played
The most overrated team in NFL history.

To this date 3-9-2023 I still enjoy watching the bears highlights

Coach Landry knew that everybody wants to win a game. Its a Dog eat Dog world and he wouldn't have wanted anybody to lay down so he could win.

That was crazy. In a 3 week span the defense scored more points than it gave up. Thats crazy!
The 2018 Bears defense looked similar to the 1985 Bears defense
Seeing the Cubs win a World Series doesn’t compare watching this team smash their way to a Super Bowl win. The commentator said maybe the best defense ever ?????? By far the best. No opposing qb played the next week. They truly were The Monsters Of The Midway. Great everlasting memories.
I’ll never forget that Super Bowl year for the Bears. They were unbelievable and it was such a fun season to watch growing up.

Only if they could play like that nowadays….but maybe next year the future is looking pretty bright for us
That hit that Wilbur put on Ferguson has been etched in my mind for 37 years now. Beautiful it is
but yet the dolphins kick that ass
There was never anyone like the Dancing Bear. Hats off to Walter Peyton, one of a kind, 100 percent on every single play, play after play, year after year. And Mike Singletary...This man was a thinker as much as one of the best linebackers ever.
As Vikings fan loved the 85 Bears and Mike Ditka Monsters 👻 of the Midway awesome and the Super Bowl shuffle
