As a Brit living overseas, I am so proud of our soldiers and the relentless harassment these soldiers (who have served in recent battles in Iraq or Afghanistan), I wish tourists would understand that these are working soldiers who have served in battle and have seen things that no human should see in war.
Military guard our Country. They are NOT to be treated as ENTERTAINMENT at an Amusement park !! These kind of Incidents should never be tolerated. That is why filming here is so very Important, as a record , to if possible Ban any kind of trouble maker from being welcome here again. But this is not a military base. These horses stand in London on the pavement in front of royal houses. The public pavement on which thousands of regular Londoners walk to their work or pub or home everyday. And these men and horses stand there since centuries ago. They stood there 250 years ago and Londoners passed them safely. They stood there 30 years ago and Londoners passed them safely. The point is that Londoners do know that these people are active soldiers doing their job. This stuff happens since tourists from all over the world travel there who do not know, how to behave. And if you go somewhere and don‘t educate yourself on how to act, you deserve everything you get.

The problem is there is nothing to explain that Horse guards is a working barracks the men and women on horses, in the arches and stables are serving soldiers doing their duties day in and day out. These beautiful horses are abused daily because the tourons think they are for them to touch and I for one am delighted when people get bitten by the horses, the horses give clear signs they don't want the people near them at all and of course the morons don't take the warning seriously. My particular favourites are Ormonde Blues and Royals and Radan the mare in the Life guards, they both show their dislike and disdain for the stupid We do of course have the over acting tourists hoping to get compensation for their own stupidity as well. If I was in charge I wouldn't allow the crowding inside or outside Horse guards the pavements outside should be closed to pedestrians permanently and only small paying tour groups allowed inside. No photos with the horses at all. This would allow the guards and horses to carry out their duties without constant bothering by people. I love horses and can never understand even with all signs telling people that the horses may kick or bite ( I would change that to will kick and bite) and don't touch the horses still don't get it and even the recent introduction of the white lines to distance the horses from tourist abuse are still not preventing the most insistent morons from not keeping out of the box, most people with maybe a few working braincells would realise these were all there for a reason, but they think they have the right to have photos taken with the guard and horse and to them this also means touching the guards boot, which has taken them hours to get to that beautiful shine or the poor horse, who so stressed it chews its bit, one was weaving at one point a sure sign of the discomfort and distress it was feeling poor creature. Horses are nervy at the best of times one horse had a mini meltdown when a leaf blew into the box, they don't like umbrellas or anything that flaps in the wind or makes a sudden loud noise which in one cases led to two horses bolting straight into traffic and knocking people down and themselves being badly injured as they were literally in a blind panic, and some of the troopers being injured, this didn't take place at Horse Guards but it spotlighted how ready the horses are to bolt, the are constantly in flight mode as they were prey animals to wolves in history and it is still in their genetic make up, so even with all of the training these beauties get doesn't ever get rid of the flight response.
People who have never been around horses don't recognize the signs of stress. They need physical barriers such as waist high, solid stone walls, and huge Do Not Approach Guards signs. Or do away with the guards altogether and put the poor horses out to pasture where they really belong.

I didnt recognize any of that as threatening, i obviously have zero experience with horses, it looked like it was trying to play to my untrained eye. So i can easily see how the parents thought the same. To acknowledge any danger i have to take what I know about war animals and apply that knowledge. I wouldnt pet or even approach a working K-9, so apply that to every military animal.

None of this happens anymore. As of a few months again the decision was made that the horses could no longer be touched. There is a new sign showing this and it is taken seriously by the guards. They have also painted a white box around the horses which can't be crossed making the tourists stand a reasonable distance for photographs.

I think they have the wrong sign, warning about the horse simply implies to dumb tourists that you're allowed to get close but just be careful. I don't get why they don't put a huge square marker on the floor surrounding them for at least a metre with a sign that says "Do NOT cross the lines. Trespassers will be subject to arrest.". That way the guards aren't blocked by a fence or anything, and anyone entering can simply be arrested on the spot. That way, anyone touching the guard or horse is already trespassing.
Because the police are the civilian authority charged with the responsibility of maintaining law and order. The military is charged with the responsibility of protecting their nation against those who would attack it. The same is true in the US.

Because the police are the civilian authority charged with the responsibility of maintaining law and order. The military is charged with the responsibility of protecting their nation against those who would attack it. The same is true in the US.

@@macleadg No, it doesn't. The Royal Guards are there to Protect King and the Royal Family. The Police are there to do crowd (touron) control. Nothing odd about it.
One part of me says these are US citizens not used to colorfully-dressed soldiers on duty, but another part seems to recall some similarly disrespectful videos of tourons taken at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. And let's face it, if you think that's a place you can do whatever you want because you're on vacation, you might also think dropping your pants in the Sistine Chapel is a good idea.
I've been there, trust me, there are people from ALL over the world, including many Brits on days when the kids have a holiday. Maybe 30-40 years ago you would automatically assume, "ugly Americans" but there's a lot of Europeans and the ones from Eastern Europe are universally ill mannered and poorly behaved. Trashy.

Because it is a tradition to have the Royal Guards and Horses there. The British are not going to give up their traditions because the average IQ of a tourist is about their shoe size. For hundreds and hundreds of years this tradition and custom has been maintained. The British simply aren't going to chuck all in the toilet because modern day tourists are essentially village idiots who have traveled somewhere while still being an idiot.
