Mary Alford different roles, the press say our late Queen's bodyguard, but as usual they were not accurate.
he was part of the HONOUR Guard who greet the Queen on her arrival in Scotland
they did not guard her while she was there, and she inspected them
he is Charles current equerry, he's our King's assistant, equerries come from the Military and each equerry
changes every 3 years, he started when Charles was Prince of Wales
he is thought to have been Charles equerry since 2020

I mean, she probably asked about the pony and realised it was their Mascot. A lot of military units still have animals as mascots. Those same animals tend to be given a rank and all, it's quite wholesome actually.
EDIT: Yes this is Corporal Cruachan the Shetland pony, mascot for the Guard of Honour.

She and the troops have an unwritten agreement...She 'inspects' them quickly and exactly as required without bothering them. She knows they will be expert professionals and immaculately kitted out so she doesn't waste their time straining (when a dignitary is 'inspecting' you a trooper will tense up or 'strain', which is natural, and unhealthy). The mascot handler doesn't have to 'lock up' or 'strain'. He must stay relaxed and responsive to his charge. So she can take a moment with one of her favorite animals. I suspect any horse or pony involved in her duties, time allowing, she will personally check in on. The pony 'debris' is officially unseen...as long as she doesn't react it isn't there. (that probably made her day, I'm sure she laughed about it later). That's some fine D&C.

I don't necessarily think it is all "pomp and pageantry" (obviously some for tourist revenue). I think it is more to do with the fact we have centuries of history and tradition which would be lost to time if not for the military parades like this one. Everything our military wears and does has a meaning behind it. Take these guys for example, the kilt is a Scottish tradition dating back to the 16th century and the Scottish regiments wear them.

I have been at American parades and watched the "simple elegance" of giant screen TV's with someone belting out America the Beautiful while jets fly 100 feet overhead spraying red white and blue smoke and 60,000 people wave banners or flags or paint their faces, or do all at the same time. The pride is undeniable, the simple elegance maybe not so much. It all seems more like a combination Budweiser/McDonalds/Coca-Cola Ad with lots of flags on everything.

I'm no royalist but I'm sitting here with a grin on my face loving the pageantry and respect shown. I find it ironic that Scotland lost her monarchy due to English oppression which created a 'United' Kingdom...but this monarch of the UK loved Scotland more than anything, was happiest there, and chose to end her days in Scotland. There is a divine beauty in that. I admire the Scottish so much, hearing a Scottish marching band of soldiers coming is both awe inspiring and, I would think if they were your foe, utterly terrifying. They certainly look utterly magnificent. Huge respect from this Sassenach.

No. The Scottish King, James the First of England, Sixth of Scotland, took the throne of both countries when Queen Elizabeth 1 died without an heir. Scotland did not lose its monarchy it gained the throne of England. One side of my family comes from the highlands of Scotland and the other side from the lowlands of Scotland so I have no axe to grind just keep historical truth.

Check yer history mate. In fact Scottish James I of England (James VI of Scotland), did the oppressing. He brought with him, from Scotland to England, his obsession about witches. Hundreds of women were burnt at the stake due to this weird obsession.

Well, the Queen was half Scottish, after all, her mum was, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.
And, I'm not sure which war it was in,or if it was all of them, the Scots were called the "ladies from hell" because of their kilts, and ferocity!!
