I have driven the Lotus Emira, and now I have changed my order! Here’s why…

- Make sure you take the advantage of the Emira test drives before finalising your specification. We were surprised by the softness of the touring chassis. Sport will be the most desirable, I’ll bet my hat on it!

Thanks for the content and review! I also recently test drove it. My order is for the touring chassis and, after the test drive, I have changed my order to automatic. I echo the sentiments of another comment on here that this is a personal choice and really depends on how you plan to use the car. I will not track this and I don’t want to have to pick and choose when I use it, in the city versus the country, traffic, etc. I enjoyed the manual but daily driving it in traffic is no fun (test drove it in New York). The paddle shifters will do me just fine and enable me to enjoy the car more. …Can’t wait for it to arrive!
Not all people want a stick and many will never take it in the track. So disagree with the suggestions that everyone will want the same thing. Some guys are just older and don’t want the stick anyone. Some might see that as a sin but that is just narrow thinking. Do you all remember when Porsche came out with the SUV and many diehards said that it will never sell and hurt Porsche image? They are forgetting that they have sold tons of those and have helped create a new source of income to sustain the “real” sports car many love. So get a wider audience is not a bad thing. And the i4 is not a bad thing either.
And to be real, wanting a manual for the track is stupid, manual are not use in racing categories like F1, GT, LMS, DTM...
@@kyzer97320 manual box is about engagement and the connection between the driver and car
Don't need to worry about lap times on the street but engagement with the car means alot more - much more rewarding to control the car vs having it drive you.
Future race car will be a self drying tesla you just ride in and brag about the lap times the computer does for you 😆
@@TheFK8LifeSpot on, more smiles per mile on street or track with the manual.
Very encouraging and appreciated perspective. Dampers are not adaptive though so changing drive modes will not alter the ride in either chassis. I am going to stick with tour chassis as it is my daily driver and I’m neither a spring 🐥 nor a highly skilled driver. Coming from a 981 Boxter S so I expect a more sporting experience even with tour chassis.
Thank you for the comment. Yes I read that when I got back, which was believe it or not, actually against what the main dealer told me! Plus the feel of car, you really would believe that it’s on active suspension the way it changes it character.
It really is a different lotus when people are talking about driving it DAILY 😂
Would recommend sticking with the Tour chassis if you're going to be driving it only on the road (or very occasional track days). Sport is a little lively - at least for the B roads around here!
Ordered the I4 straight away Sept 21, dark green verdant with tan and silver wheels, still toying what suspension setup..
I read lots of reviews saying the sport suspension is "too harsh" for the street. I ordered the sport suspension with Goodyear tires and feel the setup is perfect for me. Aggressive spring rate but very forgiving damping. I'm delighted!!
Ay yall keep going! The community you have is solid, small or not! It's valuable!
Thank you 👍
As a 13yr old I came across a Lotus Europa at the train station in Westport, Conn. I told myself I would have a Lotus one day. When I saw the Emira I quickly put down a deposit.
Congratulations! Hope it’s worth the wait for you!
So excited to see this new Lotus ! Finally, another option at a decent price point ! Keep this up Lotus !
The chassis isn't really new. The Evora is just as good.
Great video. I like that you took your time to explain.
Thank you! Means a lot 👍👍
Thanks for taking the time to review! Im booked in for a test drive in 2 weeks time at lotus surrey. I really get the point about why would you get an auto, its something ive been wrestling with .. my spec is i4 auto ..but im.already thinking as soon as i get in the v6 manual im going to be changing my spec
I 100000% predict that you will! Enjoy it bud.
awesome. i'm not really into new cars, both because i'm a poor sod and also because i like the rawness of older cars more. but this emira is something else. fell in love with it the first time i saw it. unfortunately i haven't seen it in the flesh yet. wonder if i ever will here in germany. but if i had the money, i'd get one in a heartbeat. i'd probably opt for yellow with the more traditional silver wheels and a dark interior, touring suspension but manual, of course! i'm quite certain that it would be _the_ car to keep forever.
Good colour choices 😉😉😉.
It does feel very old school. Which is why we like it so much
Get a used Evora then; it's virtually the same chassis and rawer, but very usable.
mate i couldn't even afford the steering wheel of one currently. gonna have to wait. and by then, the emira will be old and affordable enough@@EvoraGT430
Drove the car today and I thought it was amazing, my last last car was a 720s and this lotus gets to replace that 🤩
That’s an amazing comparison! We have people saying it’s too slow…and some comparing it to McLarens. Such a vast array of opinions
I look at the 720 as the pinnacle of steering and steering feel, how's the emira?
Looks like I need to think twice about the light grey interior! Thanks.👍🏻
Thanks for the comment! Yes it will take quite as bit of maintaining. We had an Evora with oyster interior and that was the same unfortunately.
Hi Mate it was a pleasure to meet you yesterday. Andy of the LDC
Hey Andy! Pleasure to meet you too!
Hopefully catch up again soon.
Apologies I couldn’t make it back. Hope you had a great day on track!
Did the seat material wear away/disappear or was it easily discolored? Love the video!
Cheers for the comment!
It was a mixture of both, it was discoloured, but also evident that it very prone to wear, especially in that colour
Part of the reason why I jumped on ordering one as soon as possible was due to it resembling a 488 at more than a third the price.
The suspension settings actually don’t change at all regardless if in TOUR, SPORT or TRACK!
I drove car yesterday and having a Evora as a daily I would say its a very good evolution of the Evora very well made and steering feel is still great if not better than mine. Having watched the Harry Metcalfe factory video the chassis is again a evolution of the Evora , I have taken both clams of mine to work on it and there are lots of similarities which is not a bad thing at all. I just can't decide on exterior colour and going to Silverstone tomorrow to look at red one but definitely not the light grey/ silver seats ha ha .I was going I4 but changed the order months ago to V6 can't wait....
Great feedback!
Yes I have toyed with the colour choices. The red is nice in person. I still think ours will be yellow. Definitely the V6…the supercharger noise is still unbeatable 👍👌
I have a deposit down and a test drive on Monday. The car is imo one of the best looking cars ever. I'm still very much undecided about the engine, colour, trim etc etc, loved the look of the red with white leather but very concerned if it's showing wear after only a few weeks.
Let us know how you get on tomorrow!
@@Jboncarswell I had my test drive today. I had been told they would have a red in the showroom and a nimbus grey car with tour suspension for the test drive however what they actually had was yellow with black pack, alcantara and sports suspension, so pretty much what you're now ordering. What a lovely car! It certainly made the Porsche Cayman in the same car park look quite mundane by comparison.
It was everything I expected of it, a strong engine and performance (certainly for someone coming from a Toyota GT86), beautiful sounds and also it appeared to be very well put together, certainly had a quality feel that even the most ardent Lotus fan would admit has sometimes been missing in the past.
We all know that Lotus’s are driver's cars and this certainly ticked that box, the sports suspension certainly wasn’t too harsh but then the roads I used on the test drive were all pretty good, it might be a different matter on some of the farm tracks they call main roads down on the south coast!. I didn't drive it on the tour setting as I simply enjoyed the drive too much to change (OK I forgot!) I would also agree with you that the gearbox is a delight - tight, accurate and short throw, pretty much perfect. The clutch was a much lower bite point than my GT86 but that certainly wasn't a problem, I found it a very easy car to drive. I still have a decision to make between the V6 and the 2 litre, which will be slightly quicker and lighter. As I only placed a deposit in July I expect I'll get to have a test drive in the 2 litre one before having to make a final decision. To be honest I expect either one to be amongst the best driver's cars available and, with the advent of battery power, probably the last great driver's cars too.
Thanks for taking the time to review! Would love to get near the yellow one again!
Really glad that you enjoyed the drive. Also great Feedback on the sports suspension. I’ll definitely be changing ours.
Thank you for sharing
@@paultune1696 "2 litre, which will be slightly quicker and lighter" I believe the 2lt is heavier.
I’m leaning towards Alcantara or Red or Black leather. I’ve heard of horror stories with Alcantara wear. What do you think?
Waiting a year or two for them to work the kinks out and I need it in Motorsport Green exterior
I am awaiting my Touring V6FE delivery but my test drive was in a Sport. I have to say that I found the Sport a little crashy on potholes and over some cobbles etc so I am happy I opted for Touring given I won't be track-daying it very often.
A few little niggles on my test car but overall very impressed with the vehicle......except the infotainment, which I felt was underwhelming.
Where I live the difference between the V4 and V6 is the starting price difference between €88k and €143k, this is quite a lot for a manual…
Wow that is a huge difference!!
Where do you live?
@@lesliemccaghy9611 I live in the Netherlands and the starting price is more above €150K for the first editions due to taxes.
Very interesting thanks. As someone weighing up a 360 or waiting for an Emira Cup this was useful.
Thanks for the comment!
The Ferrari will always have the edge in how ‘special’ it makes you feel. Please have a look at our full feature with my 360 manual and you will see what I’m on about. But the Emira is a superb contender in the replacement. It feels very similar in how raw it is…just with a warranty and some new bits 👍.
It's gorgeous. If only it performed half as good as it looks. The acceleration is pitiful unfortunately. I had a lot higher hopes for this car. I haven't canceled my order yet but 99% sure I will. I cant wrap my head around buying the slowest sports car on sale. Every sports car that costs 50k+ is faster yet is goes for 100k+.
between the lotus emira and audio r8 v10 manual which would you choose?
there is no adaptive suspension available
But... I don't want a Camry engine, I want an AMG engine.
It's not a Camry engine; it's a Lotus-tuned super-proven, super-sounding Toyota engine.
How about for regular trips between Salisbury and Zurich ?
Interesting that you say that it has one of the best gear shifters you have ever experienced while in a lot of reviews the gear shifter is described as being not so great.
If I was lucky enough to be able to afford one of these I would have the 2.0 automatic. Only because here in Wales they are trying to lower the speed limit to 20MPH . But I can’t, so I will have to keep my 2004 BoxsterS. 👍
If I had to choose which Emira to get as a track car, I'd get the i4 DCT. I'm not going to track any car with a manual, way too much work for me.
Totally agree it’s a modern 360!
If you changed your order that's on you mate we don't need to know why. Not everyone wants the same thing. They starting production and sales of the AMG model next year and that's what I'm waiting for while some others are getting the manual v6. I can say both models will perform quite differently but I'd still take the automatic any day
Video is absolute nonsense talking about changing the settings in the chassis 🤦♂️
That's what I was thinking...
Sorry, maybe that wasn’t clear enough in the video and my apologies for the confusion.
With the touring and sports setup, you can still change the options from sport to comfort in the menus. So to separate the options between the in car setup changes that are possible and the factory ‘chassis’ suspension setup, I thought that would be the best way to describe it.
@@Jboncars Those settings affect the throttle mapping. The rest is in your head. The Emira does not have adaptive dampers. "If you make it adjustable, they will adjust it wrong"
@@Jboncars dude the suspension is set. 2 options, sport damper or softer touring. it can't change
Thanks for this info man ,, great , maybe harry should have watched this before he got his
I love the white interior, but the maintenance on it just seems impossible... Red seems to be a bit too cheap looking (wish it was a darker red) so I'm looking at the tan/beige interior... Dunno might go back to red.... haven't spec'd out my emira yet as I have passed on the FE's and decided to go with a Base. (My dealer wants 20K over MSRP)
Better shifter then an s2000? I highly doubt it but anything close to it is a win in my book.
This car has sport or touring suspension. It is not adjustable from the cabin as stated.
It looks and sounds like every inch a sports car
A perfect one at that!
I nearly choked when you said it was the best manual shift and said it’s better than the S2K! 😲
I own both an S2K and NSX and those boxes are amazing.
I have driven the Emira around Hethel circuit and I found it as a negative but appreciate that like everything you need time to gel. I just found it a bit annoying when rushed where as in my Honda’s you can just slot rapidly
Appreciate the feedback!
It’s been some years since I have driven an NSX. Back in the days working for Honda in 2009.
Yes the S2K box is superb. I found the box in the Emira just that quicker and more precise. That may be the age showing however. Perfect with the heal and toe on the way down
May be subjective. Other reviewers have said it’s good, but the throws are longer than an S2K and Miata, and not as tight as a 718 GT4. Nothing a short shifter can’t fix, but I’m more concerned about the build quality…heard the dash isn’t as buttoned down.😳
Yes build quality is one of those things that just is part of lotus. I’d simply say that if it’s a concern, don’t have one. They are never going to have the quality of the Germans, or the reliability of the Japanese cars. Just part of lotus ownership when bits fall off.
Yes I just drove the Emira and I too currently own a s2k and nsx... I drove the nsx to the Emira test drive specifically to see how it compared. The Emira felt great for a new stock car, but the shifting feel is not on the s2000's level imo. Perhaps the aftermarket will address that but overall I'm liking it. The biggest let down were the people at the dealership. I was not kindly received at all, except by one person, and the moron who went on the test drive with me was ignorant and insulting.
Dont be afraid to post up anything I said at all share away mate :-) Andy
Ordered on then lost 90% of my portfolio value... Now i will have to wait awhile.
nice exterior colors on wheels and body. could do without hte vents on the hood and the white seats.
As of Dec 22 there is a 60 week waiting list
One a the last decent petrol cars being produced
👌🏼
A car for the people
Those stupid door handles
They arnt natural, if only they were reversed
What a failure. Using a stupid touchpad on the steering wheel controls. Have they not learned anything from WV's failures?
It's very good. But for me, nothing drives like McLaren LT supercars.
Slight price difference.....plus a lot of McLarens are built by ex-Lotus engineers.
@@EvoraGT430
Nope! Not true at all. That's pretty much the same as saying a lot of McClarens are built by Toyota Engineers.
Heel and toe! It’s 2022 and you still want to push a peddle and waggle a stick whilst having one hand in the steering wheel. Not dangerous then? With all the vehicles on the road today , a manual is a distraction. Bet when the two litre with the auto box comes out, the motoring press will prefer that.
I managed it for over 30 years and not caused me to crash despite driving much more powerful, faster cars than an emira
It's called engagement.......
It’s made for the countryside
Sure is!!
😊
It seems that all car youtubers don't want to point out any negatives anymore about cars they drive and if someone write something bad, they cut the comment....Let's see if this one will go though...
Well, I drove it too. It's very slow. No way 0-60 is 4.3". More like 6". So bad. It feels like there is no supercharger in the car at all. A Very heavy feeling, like a plain natural v6 and no kick at all when you floor it.
The manual gears are so short in distance to each other that it feels the gear is not in place. The clutch pedal is extremely close to the break pedal. I mean almost toughing each other. There is an opening to the cabin at the end of the real glass. A/C and heat loss from there for sure and the danger of someone throwing something in since there is access to the cabin!
The same rear glass was burning to the touch after driving it for only 15mins. BTW, the check engine light was on while I was driving it...
Appreciate the feedback. Everyone has their own personal opinion, and as I mentioned, I wasn’t a fan of the Touring set up, and was happy to criticise it for being a bit soft.
Again with the speed, you can go faster in a straight line, but that isn’t what it’s about.
The gearbox and pedals I found perfect. If you can drive quickly, with confidence, it’s a joy. Heal and toe the gears on the way down and the gearshift is a peach. No issues here with the pedals and I’m a size 10 shoe. Wasn’t an issue at all.
If the check engine light was on, then the car was running in a limp mode. Depending on the fault detected, this either restricts the maximum revs (to around 5000rpm) or restricts both the available throttle opening and max revs. The former would make it feel slow and short geared. The latter would make it feel even slower.
This powertrain has been used in Exige and Evora for several years - the Evora400 has been independently tested at around 4.1secs 0-60mph.
Probably most people can understand tripe is tripe when they read it
Completely new car my ass, it's just a refreshed Evora.
why?
😱 just the Toyota make in England 🇬🇧 🤣🤣🤣

SPER Lotus Emira!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
