As a Black man it’s really hard for me to watch movies like this. I prefer movies and tv shows showcasing Black people excelling or just leading normal lives. However I try at least once a year to watch this movie or something similar because if we don’t understand the past we can neither prevent it from happening again or celebrate how much progress we’ve made. Great reaction as always.
Same for me but if we sing tell these stories they get lost and it's important to know this history. Young people don't know this stuff and they should. There is a reason why they ate trying to stop people from knowing this. We baby let that happen. If we do, then we are doomed to do this again. No one wants to not tell the story of 9/11. But yes this is hard. I watched this movie once and that was it.
@@carladavis1473 Agreed. You see they are already trying to re-write history and ban CRT being taught in schools. Someone told me that there are some schools that banned teaching slavery in the school. I read a news story that a family was suing the school for teaching their black 7th grader that slaves enjoyed being slaves. They don’t want it taught because their kids have questions and they trying to avoid some type of weird guilt.
Same! It's so important for us to remember it. It's incredibly difficult to watch.
I completely understand. For me, I watched this movie and thought it was done so well it was an amazing film. But it's not one that I could watch and it's entirety more than once. To me it was the most accurate display of slavery I had ever seen. Django was just a slave's fantasy. This was real and raw. from that point on, I realized I didn't need to see anymore slave movies, with the exception of notable figures like Harriet Tubman (although I wasn't a fan of that movie they did). I thought about Patsy for days after watching this movie...
History is history. We can’t delete it, we can’t even get over it. We progress, yes, and we learn from the past, yes…..
I totally agree, it is much easier to deal with what’s good, but it’s a must to appreciate this, in the sense of acknowledging it, taking it to consideration. It is art, and it’s through art we can translate history, good or bad…..
First, as a black man, these movies both fill me with rage, and pride at the same time. I'm a proud black American military veteran, and as only the 4th generation removed from having a slave ancestor's blood running through my veins, I'll never not be.
Second, the white former slave overseer was a "share cropper" or "indentured servant". They work for either a portion of the harvest, a paid wage, or for their own freedom (often due to either a debt or as restitution for a petty crime).
Peonage, also called debt slavery or debt servitude, is a system where an employer compels a worker to pay off a debt with work. Legally, peonage was outlawed by Congress in 1867. However, after Reconstruction, many Southern black men were swept into peonage though different methods, and the system was not completely eradicated until the 1940s.
Patsy(Lupita Nyong'o) won best supporting actress Oscar for this part. I loved your reaction to this movie. That is the way we all should feel when we see such horrific behavior in so called humans. Treat people the way you want to be treated.
Patsy was real. There is ongoing research trying to figure out what happened to her
If they ever find out, I really don't want to know.
44:15 Guilt, self-loathing due to obsessing over and abusing Patsy. His jealous bitter wife, rejecting him, emasculating and insulting him for months for his obsession with Patsy, her disappearance intensifies his guilt and obsession even more, sending his restless hateful mind to the brink of insanity, he takes out all his frustrations on his slaves, which he knows is wrong, leading to more guilt and self loathing. It's a vicious endless cycle, portrayed perfectly by the great Michael Fassbender. What an actor!
You both look emotionally drained at the end. Incredible story telling by everyone involved in this interpretation of Solomons true story.
39:26 They were called “indentured servants” …not slaves exactly. Usually poor Whites & convicts who had no other work opportunities!
A few years ago I came upon a pair of ancestors who had come to America fairly early. The son of a London physician and a young lady friend visiting from Scotland were invited to lunch on the deck of a ship anchored in the Thames. While on board, they discovered that the ship had drawn anchor and was headed out to sea.
They ended up kidnapped and offered as indentured servants to compensate the ship's captain for their 'transport'. The couple were split up and the young man worked 7 years to earn his freedom. He stayed in the area and waited several more years for his unfortunate companion, marrying her and settling in the area where they had been held.
Indentured servitude was not all that different from slavery; just as slaves could be beaten and even killed for even the slightest offense without the Master being brought up on charges, the same fate occurred to indentured servants.
Kidnapping of British citizens to sell as indentured servants only lasted 2 or 3 years before British law put a stop to it. But it did occur. And some white British citizens likely died as a result.
The chief difference between slaves and indentured servants was that the period of bondage had a termination date for servants; also that children born of servants were not bound to service. Otherwise, they did the same work, wore the same clothes, ate the same food, lived in the same housing, and suffered the same treatment. Their indenture contract could be transferred, just as slaves could be sold or gifted. It's possible Indentured servants were granted extra time for worship/church on Sundays (whites inarguably had souls, but not all whites at the time held the same belief for blacks).
yeah like "immigrants" and "expats"
Like the people that England sent to Australia. I have read that at one time in England that if you were convicted of certain crimes you faced one of three punishments; execution, banishment to the Americans, or banishment to Australia. The worst criminals that were not executed were banished to Australia. (As a disclaimer I’m an American citizen born and raised in the USA.)
Tbf he could’ve actually straight up been black. There were lots of slaves that were actually able to pass for white because one of their parents was only part black and the other was the white owner. Thomas Jefferson had 6 kids with a slave who was only 25% black and was born into slavery(slavery worked in the same way bastards work in Game of Thrones. People who are born without their parents marrying are legally bastards. Same with slavery but replace lack of married parents with lack of freedom). Her children all passed for white because their mother was mostly white and their father was completely white.
Really bold movie to tackle. Amazing reaction. So much respect
This movie was extremely hard to watch but its necessary in my opinion. People dont realise how bad it was during slavery and it deeply saddens me that some of my ancestors have lived through this. Im very mixed and i have both slaves and slavers as ancestors. People always say it was a long time ago but it really wasnt. Slavery really wasnt that long ago and neither was racism. Apartheid existed in south africa since 1991! 1991 was only 32 years ago. The actors in this movie did a phenomenal job and i cant imagine acting something as painful as this. Fantastic actors and a necessary movie
One of the greatest films of the last decade. A true cinematic miracle and a worthy best picture winner 💯
Yay! The boys are back! Powerful movie! Our history has some very, very dark events and times in it. Just heartbreaking. I wish none of it happened. I twisted around in my seat watching this, heartbeating with anxiety the whole time.
Very powerful movie indeed! I’m pursuing a degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology!
Whatever..
Just watched this myself so you guys are my first reaction video. It blew my mind how horribly the slaves were treated, you think you know going in, then you see it and it's enough to make you sick. I wish we'd gotten the closure on Patsey but since Solomon himself wrote the original memoir this was made from, I guess he didn't have the answer to that. Sucks really but what can you do? You guys did a great job, I know how difficult this was to watch, but so much was learned. Thanks boys!
Well done for reviewing this intensely difficult film. The white former overseer is an indentured servant. Here in Australia convicts were brought out from England to become indentured labourers, and they are the unsung heroes and heroines who built this country. Here we are proud to have convict roots, the largely Irish and Brit convicts who came here were incredibly brave and determined.
This movie is intense & based on real events. It had me bawling like a baby when I saw it. 😭Insane to think the TORTURE this poor man along with the slaves endured. Amazing, haunting performances by the entire cast!! 👏👏
The white guy working who he asked to send the letter was an indentured servant. Pretty much a person who was a slave by contract, so they still could be bought and sold and told what to do, but the contract would eventually end where they would get paid at the end. Most would be a servant for like 10 years in hopes to make enough money to buy their own land but many probably died before they were able to do so
I love this movie. Underrated classic. People sleep or try to dismiss Holocaust and Slavery movies because it's hard to see. But, to me that is even more reason. History repeats itself. Life is precious so appreciate how far we have come and need to go. 💕
Hopefully they are making the historical connection between then and all the race stuff that is happening now.
I watched this movie when it came out in 2013. I was 11. The scene with Patsy traumatized me. Sad movie but I loved the directing and the cast was amazing.
12 Years A Slave is one of the greatest biographical movies of all time as it so heartbreaking, emotional, deep, raw, graphic, and explicit on so many levels.🥺😭😞😱😰 The story, performance's, music, direction, and cinematography was outstanding and incredible. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Luptia Nyong'o did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Solomon Northup and Patsey as they both put tons of emotion and depth into their roles. It also gives a insightful and articulate representation of slavery such as the cruelty and brutality of what they have to endure in order to gained their freedom. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old.😍😎💯👍
There's another great film about slavery that stars Will Smith. Unfortunately, the timing of the release of it coincided with his unfortunate behavior at the Oscars that year and the controversy of that overshadowed the movie, but still, the film is still very well done, and the acting is superb! The film is called, "Emancipation" (2022).
Loved Michael fassbender in this! His work is so varied and all amazing. From shame to his xmen films, he delivers every time!
A side note: black history is often dissolved to stories of black pain and suffering. Maybe try a black love story next time, or something that is joyful!
We already have our next two recorded but love this advice!
Loving is a good movie to watch about interracial love. Based on a true story. There is a documentary about the Lovings also.
The best part of this reaction is your discussion afterwards. You brought in philosophy and discussions about ethics and morality which are always important discussions in our society. ✌🏼
Zay, you were right on the money with the difference between reading about something and seeing it on screen. Cam, you were right on the money that this movie should be shown in schools and the parallels between slavery and the Holocaust. Speaking of the Holocaust, PLEASE watch Schindler's List. It's Steven Spielberg's best and most important film. It was, by the way, shown in schools.
10:26 In the old terms, he was bamboozled.
Lupita did win the Oscar for best supporting actress for this.
This is a difficult, but Important film. It's easy for people to watch it and say how horrible the past in America was, however I think the film is still relevant today, as the echoes of that past still haunt and resonate within our divided culture and systematic racism is very much still an issue. Films like this are important because we should never forget and need to do better as human beings..thanks for reacting to this and helping to bring awareness.. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult this must have been for the cast and crew to film..xo
Amistad is another really great movie! With Anthony Hopkins, Matthew mcconaughey, Djimon Hounsou, Morgan Freeman, chiwetel ejiofor +++ it’s amazing. It’s in my top ten for sure. And it’s based on a true story as well
In Amistad movie the scenes where slaves are murdered in the ocean travel are too much hard to watch 😖
“They have to be basement dwelling cousin humpers or something “ I CACKLED omggg I’m subscribing i live you guys reaction to this moves sm😂😂😂❤️
Thank y’all for acknowledging and celebrating BHM. May I suggest the Color Purple, Hidden Figures, Harriett, Race (Jesse Owens story), Green Book and the Help.
Bros, if you think trying to stomach this movie is bad, wait 'til you do a true deep dive into the history of slavery in this country, and I'm not talking about that bull crap they teach you about it in public schools... there is just no words to describe the horror, and monstrosity of it.
Its a terrible watch but remember this happened! This was the level of depravity at that time. Can we just take a moment to acknowledge the actors who made this film so real and gave it true meaning?
Canada passed the Act Against Slavery in 1793, one of the earliest anti-slavery acts in the world.
This movie stressed me out so bad. I only watched it once.
Damn, I watched that movie recently and its crazy what they had to go through in history. Some people are just evil
Great reaction guys this is my first time watching you guys channel. Yalls pretty good!!!
Lupita N'Yongo did win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress that year.
Altough Solomon and his evil master are both great, but the two black women are truly made the best acting in this movie.
Review Glory. Great cast, great story. About the 54th Massachusetts, which was the first African American Regiment in the Union Army.
Also i read the book....the film follows the book VERY closely.
Excellent book too.
The white man in slavery that was a former overseer that was a drunk. He was a indentured servant. That mean they gave u room board food like a they would a slave and u work off ur way out of debt.
This movie is identical to the book 12 years a slave
Solomon Northrup really did exist
This is a great movie. You should also watch "Amistad", another great one.
This reaction was really good I actually watched through the whole thing
As a Black woman I cannot what this movie again. I saw it once in theatres when I was 17. When the movie was over the entire theatre was silent and everyone exited the theatre quietly. Either that or I mentally blocked out voices..... I've seen reactions to this movie and but I can never watch it in full… probably when I have kids for educational purposes. It is so deeply disturbing for me.
I was physically I'll when I watched it. I still get sick at certain scenes
Same. This is my first time watching a reaction to it but I saw it only once abd it disrupted my soul! It was incredibly hard to watch. This and hotel Rwanda are 2 movies I will never watch again but still also recommend that everyone should watch at least once
@@carladavis1473 ooooh yea hotel Rwandan also made me physically ill. I've seen that one 2-3 times. But not the whole film after the first watch. I read the book as well. The book is worth a read. It's short.
@@morganepg yes this is my first time watching a reaction because I can’t take myself to watch the movie itself. When my sister would put in the movie dvd I would cry and leave out the room
Well deserved movie to win the oscar for movie of the year
I just finished watching the movie. I put it off for years because I knew it would be a hard to get through. I was so glad when it was over but I know it’s important to watch films like this and never forget what half of my ancestry had to go through
Dogs were treated better
Patsy was in Wakanda
You young men gained a subscriber for this reaction..
Amistad, Rosewood and The Color Purple next.
Fantastic reaction to this super great movie. You had lots of great things to say throughout. And you used to live near Saratoga! Very cool! As far as the white overseer being hired - it might be cheaper to just hire a guy for a harvest rather than buy another slave, especially if you're strapped for cash yourself. And although it was black people who made up the vast majority of the slaves in the U.S., there were actually some white slaves and other kinds as well. Not many, but - just like anything else in life - it always gets a little fuzzy 'round the edges. Really great reaction, thanks for doing this movie. They really captured the period well in so much that it didn't seem like modern actors in costume. You really get immersed in that world, especially the scenes when he's free, in the north.
This was such a great movie pick for black history month , phenomenal performances., but is a very hard watch…then Cam shoots out the comment about “basement dwelling cousin bumpers”, and I almost spit out my coffee! 🤣. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable it must have been for the actors to play these parts. SNL did a skit on trying cast actors for 12 years a slave that makes a pretty good point of how hard it must have been to find anyone to portray these characters that should have never existed in the first place. You should check it out.
Thanks, Cameron! Thanks, Isaiah! ⛓💥 As painful as it is to recall this era, we must honor the survival, determination and struggle toward equality... or we'll move backward (and plenty would love to see us do so). #CamAndZay #SteveMcQueen #12YearsASlave
One of the best films of all time!! Girl Interrupted is a great one too.
For most BP, this movie was unsettling and disturbing to watch……interesting choice of words you are using to describe the movie…..🤔
This is an amazing movie and I’m glad you watched it! Not to take away from this, but really curious if you’re planning to finish The Pacific?
Yes we are planning to get through it! We are trying to balance our timing with things a bit better, it’s a bit complicated as Zay works two jobs and I (Cam) am finishing my college degree, but we are not giving up!
@@camandzay Gotcha! No rush, understand y’all have real lives 🙂
@@camandzay how dare you put your livelihoods and educations before our needs and wants.
we want reactions damn you.
😂🤣
Cam And Zay. For u guys to have the movie unedited especially with the N word is impressive
Now the whole thing with Patsy and master Epps is this
In 1841 Solomon Northrup was tricked into slavery
Now the year I don't know when Solomon was on Edwin Epps plantation
Patsy Epps slave was an excellent cotton picker and because she worked on picking 500+ pounds of cotton a day Edwin Epps was romantically in love with her because of her work ethic
Epps wife was always jealous and wanted to hurt patsy at every turn and chance she got
This movie is identical to the book 12 years a slave
This one of the hardest movies for me to watch
Great reaction, I cast my 2cents for Amistad!!! Also an all star cast and touching story.

This is one movie I didn’t watch and I really need to.
Lupita’s performance in this is terrific, and it rightfully earned her the Oscar….. that’s all I know 😅
Amazing reaction Boys. 🔥🔥
39:30 DEFINITELY there were white slaves... Irish in particular, but even an American... if you went broke, and tou had no way to repay your debts, then you may have ended up as a slave...
This was a great conversation frfr
Are you from the north or south if you are from the south your ancestors fought for this continue moments like this im glad I’m Irish as we had no part in these atrocities
Reacting to the color, purple

You all should watch The Color Purple
Are you just putting out a video per fortnight now?
This movie was soo upsetting to see.🤦🏾♂️💔
Fantastic acting too shits crazy they are all talented
Harvest time is the most labor intensive time on a farm so farmers will often hire extra temporary workers, who would have all been white.
Do Amistad. You won't be disappointed.

Extremely hard watch, but it needs to be seen so some people can finally open their eyes to the inhumanity. 😞
When did Diego Luna start a youtube channel?
Powerful movie, liked the genuine reaction guys❤
Enjoying your channel 🤩
I watched this '96 Tim Burton movie and thought you guys might like it 😁
It's a little ... different:
💥 Mars Attacks💥
How could they do that to other human beings? Simple. Money.
No. There are may people that would never do this for money. Beating them and raping them wasn't for money. They did it because they were evil and put off pure hatred. They did not see blacks s human but animals. They actually treated animals better. That money was only a small part.
@@carladavis1473 They needed to see black people as animals to justify enslaving them, to make money. It's kind of a vicious cycle.
This movie developed an unexplainable hatred of humanity for me but I'm trying to cope with it as obviously not all white people are like that, NOT ALL humans are brutal, but it hits me so hard when I think how many more true stories must exist regarding slavery, which remain unheard and hidden from our eyes, how many tears would have been escaped, how many more people would have been physically and mentally broken, just because of the diabolicalness of us humans, it saddens me yet brings immense anger into my soul, I just would never truly understand such despicable acts, I just can't.
You guys should react to beasts of no nation....it is something alright 💯
Quote - i dont know if hes getting out of it at the end of the movie....
Film title - 12 years a slave. 😂😂😂
Absolutel 🤡s
I know a lot of people couldn't watch this movie
1:13:00
Dem blacks cray-cray !!
38:45 The "White Slaves" were known as "Indentured Slaves" and they most often were "European Immigrants" who entered into "Indentured servitude contracts" to pay for their passage to America. The contracts were usually for a certain amount of time depending on how much the fare was for safe passage to the "New World" and when they fulfilled it they were freed. There were times when "White People" entered into an indentured enslavement contract voluntarily to pay back a loan or debt repayment. Other times, enslavement was imposed involuntarily as a judicial punishment.
Awful people throughout normally the ones with power and money you raised the slave were raised this was ok
The American Education has severely failed you guys. It's honestly shocking, appalling and absolutely infuriating.
And it's getting worse
Till, Schindler’s List, United 93, Come & See, All Quiet on the Western Front, 12 years a Slave. All movies that shouldn’t have been made, but should be seen by everyone at some point.
Just curious, why shouldn't these movies been made?
@@carladavis1473 I only said that because the events that these movies are made for shouldn’t exist at all, but of course, that’s not the reality we live in. The movies I listed do a spectacular job of capturing the horror and tragedy of these awful acts. My bad if I wasn’t really clear before.
Sup Guys, Can you guys please react to The Crow (1994) I think you guys will really like it. Its great film making. Its like watching art in motion.
Its a new character to you and you guys will think he's cool. Its one of the best comic book movies you guys will see.

And being raped

Good movie or not I’m not watching because I’ve heard enough by now. No one can criticize this movie or you are racist and if you don’t act overly sensitive and excited about this movie the same .
