As a Philadelphian, I can tell you that it IS Greek for "City of Brotherly Love".
As a Lithuanian, I can tell you that a Dodger is the nickname for Brooklyn residents who crossed streets, trying not to get hit by the trolley cars at the time...trolley " Dodgers".
You guys are too wise to be so young. Great reaction and commentary. I am an older man and remember the civil rights movement that stemmed from the actions of Mr. Robinson and other brave people. Luckily I was surrounded by family and friends who were more interested in character than color. I attended one of the few mixed race schools that were around in the early 60s. We were friends and neighbors, simple as that.
❤️ from Texas
“As opposed to what kind” is INSANE 😂😭😂😭😂😭😂
There’s a statue in Brooklyn of Jackie and Pee Wee Reese. Such a beautiful moment.
That photo of Jackie with the racist Phillies manager holding the bat - also true.
I am old enough to remember the racism depicted in this film. I remember the Civil Rights movement and watching the nightly news when fire hoses and dogs were aimed at those fighting for equality. I love the fact that young people like yourselves cannot fathom a world like that. It shows how far we have come. Great job Guys!
Unfortunately we still see police brutality to protesting civil rights groups.
And then they act surprised when such an oppressed group riots.
It was the same in 1935, 1966, 1992 and 2020.
The pattern seems to be oppress and mistreat poor black communities until they riot over the murder of a young man by the police.
Then when the young angry black men in that community riot the police and fox news calls them animals and create more hatred.
My question is why is that pattern of behaviour so obvious to a dumb white man from England like me and it seems to evade half of peoples brains in the states.
Do kids in America not get taught about the history of race riots?
I thought you guys had a whole black history month so that everyone knew what happened?
Is it willful ignorance by rednecks?
Do people in Alabama just not want to know the truth and actively avoid facts?
"Hey Billy-Bob this black fella is taking a knee during the national anthem!"....
"Jonny-Lee..... Get the guns".
It's insane.
Southern white American racism is so stupid and annoying that it makes me racist against white folk. And I look like Casper the ghost.
End of rant.
I think it was a couple of years after this that Chadwick Boseman was in another biopic. He portrayed the godfather of soul himself, James Brown, in "Get On Up". He did a great job in that as well.
Josh Gibson, Jackie Robinson, and Satchel Paige are all black baseball players (the ones with stars 12:09), and they were three of the best. Love the channel.
A fun real life fun fact that you may not be aware of that ties Jackie Robinson to another movie/series you guys reivewed previously. Jackie played football and baseball at UCLA. Buck Compton (from Band of Brothers) was his team mate on both teams while at UCLA.
38:00 No, that's correct. Philadelphia really means "Brotherly Love" in ancient Greek. There were a city named Philadelphia in ancient Greece too.
41:30 Nicole Beharie is an incredible actor who tends to have amazing chemistry with her co stars! you guys should add 'American Violet' to your list of movies to watch/react to, it was based on true events too and she's the lead
Rachel Robinson is still Alive over 100 years old
Great reaction. Shows a little of how life was and what Jackie had to deal with. The blackboard of names was a little acknowledgement to all the Negro League players who should've been playing in the Majors. Josh Gibson for example is the only player to hit the ball out of the Yankees Stadium. Chadwick literally transformed himself into Jackie, he also did the same playing James Brown in the movie "Get On Up" that you should check out
This is one of my favourite baseball movies of all time. The whole "doing it for the money" spiel was a way for Branch Rickey to diffuse some of the political backlash. If it was only for the money any black ballplayer would have done, and picking an established star like Satchel Paige would have actually been better. Also if it was just the money, he wouldn't have worried about Jackie, because there were hundreds of skilled black players he could bring in if Jackie failed.
And on a pick off play, the runner has to be tagged, and pro baseball players still wear metal cleats, depending on the surface they are playing on and the player's preference.
After seeing this movie, I looked up some articles on some of the real people involved.
Leo Durocher was indeed suspended from the Dodgers, but it was for associating with known gamblers, not for having an affair with a married woman (though he did do that). He's also partially responsible for introducing the phrase "nice guys finish last", which we hear him say in the film. It is true, though, that he came down hard on players who opposed Jackie joining the team.
Eddie Stanky (the player who stands up for Jackie to Ben Chapman) was personally opposed to the team integrating, but still promised Jackie he would have his back. The story of him talking back to Chapman is true.
Dixie Walker, the player we see sulking at the end, later described the petition against Jackie (which was actually initiated by him, not Higbe) as "the stupidest thing I'd ever done" and apologized for it.
Bobby Bragan, the catcher, signed the petition against Jackie and asked to be traded, but later changed his mind. This was more from him getting to know and respect Jackie, rather than from witnessing Chapman's abuse.
Surprisingly, even Ben Chapman supposedly readjusted his attitudes later in life and acknowledged he error of his ways.
Hugh Casey, one of the players we see signing the petition briefly, didn't really live long enough to change his views. In 1951, the married Casey was named by another woman as the father in a paternity suit and the despondent Casey ate a shotgun.
Kirby Higbe, the pitcher who Jackie psyched out, never really expressed regret for opposing Jackie and was even justifying it twenty years later in his autobiography. Since players didn't make much money then, he drifted from job to job and got in trouble with the law more than once. The movie suggests that being traded was imposed on him, but in fact he had requested it, so as not to play with Jackie. But because history and people are complicated, it's worth noting that Higbe spoke highly of Roy Campanella, another black player who joined the Dodgers a year after Jackie and even expressed sadness that Campanella's career was later cut short by a car accident that left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Really interesting background in you comment. Love to hear from folks who really know more of the details. And you're right about history and people being complicated. It makes some folks uncomfortable trying to sort out how they feel about events and personalities, since clear cut heroes and villains make it easy to judge, but any good student of life, and that should be all of us, need to look closely at everything. And if you are mature enough to do that, the world is actually more interesting.
42, man. What a movie.
I got this from the Daily Actor web page
Tudyk admits that delivering the lines made him uncomfortable, and the feeling stuck with him like a bad hangover. He describes it as, “It was like I got wasted at a bad party. It would leave a stain on your mood, and put you into a bad mood into the next day.” One obstacle he faced in his performance was overcoming his own views with those filled with hate. He says, “It was hard to get past my own feelings. I had to get past that actor feeling of being someone sensitive and liberal, who’s not used to fighting.”
That signal from the catcher was for an inside fastball... basically he was telling the pitcher to hit him with the pitch!
My dad was the baseball coach at a local college for years. It's the only sport I'm familiar with. I have no clue when it comes to sports. Great movie though. Great review like always, Boys!
46:29
In the film, Wendell Smith is said to have been the first black member of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). In reality, Sam Lacy was the first, having joined in 1948.
If yall thought the toilet situation was weird in this movie....you should watch The Help! 😳
I loved both the book AND the movie. So good.
Alan Tudyk would apologise to the extras at the start of the day for what they would have to hear.
This by far is the best reaction from you guys I've ever seen on this channel. Is probably one of the best reaction to this movies I've seen. You both really shined with your after movie analysis. I tip my cap to you both; well done!
I'm a huge baseball fan and baseball history nut and this is a movie I appreciate a lot. It's important for so many reasons because a lot of people forget how the world (not just the baseball world) was at that time in history. I love your channel boys, you make everything you watch so genuine and I love how you've never lost the feeling of just being two buddies watching a movie together. "Cam and Zay" is Russian for "movie reaction kings," haha.
April 15 is the day that everyone in MLB wears 42 as the anniversary of Robinson's debut. In 2020 with the pandemic-shortened season they didn't play in April, so for that year the date was changed to August 28 as the anniversary of his first meeting with Rickey. Unfortunately August 28, 2020 ended up being the very day that Chadwick Boseman passed.
Love this movie. Thank you guys.
Darn, I haven't seen this one yet. I like to have seen them first. I'll have to rent it.
It's discrimination, not racism. We're all the same human race. Loved this movie
*The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (Lando and Darth Vader)
Check out Race (the Jesse Owens story). Great movie also based on true story.
31:33 aye bruh you funny asf 😂
That was the best movie I’ve seen in a while. It was so much fun watching w you guys! Harrison Ford was great in this.
I really your channel. Both of you are very engaging -- healthy confidence with a good moral core. It particularly comes out in a movie about this subject.
They change the rule you cannot run over the catcher no more you can thank Buster Posey
I love T.R knight idk he was in this movie to I loved him in Grey’s anatomy and I love Lucas black too also Nicole beharie has so much chemistry with every love entrance she plays with it’s just her
It’s GEORGE from Grey’s Anatomy!! (Curly hair) 😊😊
Celebrate baseball! Be colorblind. Baseball season is coming. Your next movie should be The Babe.
On a pick off you have to tag the runner out
Great Movie & Reaction
You missed one of the greatest line from Branch Rickey
You should also watch the movie 61*. Another true story baseball movie.
Unfortunately they lost to the Yankees that year but they did win it in 55
This is such a great movie! I’ve never played baseball, but I love baseball movies. Have either of you seen Field of Dreams? I it would be a great react🙃
When are you going to post 8x6 of Game Of Thrones on You Tube?
Burt Shotton in the movie was WOJO from Barney Miller
Please do a reaction to the movie RAY... Based on the life of musician Ray Charles. It won Jamie Foxx his Oscar Award.
Have you seen Field of Dreams?
The Phillies were one of the racist teams. The Red Sox could have been the first integrated team but ended up the last team. Cito Gaston was the first black manager to win the World Series with the Toronto Blue Jays '92 & '93.
Can you react to Belle 2013
Baseball only cares about one color green
@Cam&Zay another good reaction y'all two dudes respect from Louisiana 🐊⚜👍🏾, also please check out and react to the Jesse Owens story film called Race (2016) it's another good one like 42.

What am I seeing Cam? Are you becoming a baseball ⚾ fan? Say it ain't so Cam! Seriously Cam I was like you. I used to hate not only baseball, but all sports because I was one who always got picked last. Not just because I was worst at the game, but because I was gay and I was the only one left. Hate is Hate and if you hate the game because the players hate you, it's still hate.
I always seem to be in the hospital when you guys peek. Strange that.
This is just for you Cam. I want you to watch on RUclips "Not So Serious Baseball 1,2,3 and 4." And you'll learn to love the game like I did.
i would love for you guys to react to the 2007 movie hairspray. it’s such a feel good movie
Nahh
1947 World Series
New York Yankees won
These are great movies but what I don't like about them is they paint this picture like black man just take the beating and things will work out for you. They (media) don't popularize something like Birth of a Nation by Nate Parker. I have my own theories behind that but people like Martin Luther King Jr are more favored and taught about rather than Malcolm X. Take the beating take the racism take the mocking don't defend yourself vs protect yourself by any means necessary. Ones favored in media and education and the latter is not.
Btw both of those are A+ Movies imo
Birth of a Nation (Nate Parker)
Malcolm X (Denzel Washington)
DID YOU 2 CHARACTERS FLEE THE COUNTRY ??????????????
im glad someone reacted to this gem!
37:55 that’s a true fact.
Also, another true fact.
The Phillies were the last Major League Baseball team to integrate. The Phillies were owned and run by a racist in those days. They were notorious for this sort of thing in the 40’s and 50’s. As a Phillies fan myself it’s pretty nauseating and embarrassing that this is a part of our long history.
