Such a great show, but girl, take care of yourself first.
The watchmaker's wife knew ahead of time because the infection was spreading from a central location to nearby nations, so people in the regions surrounding were seeing the symptoms in others before it reached the USA. Likely her extended family overseas called to say people were going insane and told them that it was breaking out all over the place.
I think she was just afraid of military on the streets. They were middle eastern Muslims, so in 2003, just two years after 9/11, they had a reason to be afraid.

The bombing in Jakarta, Indonesia was announced on the radio.
I recommend keeping a stuffed animal or blanket handy while watching. It will help during the emotionally intense moments.
Just a friendly reminder, this show continues to pluck on the heart strings. Take your time with this series if you need to, I hope others have mentioned this as well.

Remember on the radio in the beginning we hear that it seems to have started in Jakarta.
15:00 Yes, Anna Torv. She was also in Fringe. They roughed her up quite a bit in this show though, so it is genuinely hard to recognize her. I literally didn't until some reactor pointed it out.

16:45 Unlike the games, there are actually no spores in the show. Likewise, the games do not have the mouth tentacle shroom thingies, but they were an old concept you can find on concept art of the first game, so the idea itself isn't new.
You would not have been the first person to sob during Sarah's scene btw. The one in the game hit me hard enough to ugly cry, and that was just from watching it (I don't use consoles and the PC port came like a decade later). There's entire compilation videos of both the show and the game reactions and there's quite a few very emotional ones.
Also, this is still very much part of the zombie genre. There's non undead viral infected "zombies" in various franchises too. And if your book hasn't covered them yet, look up cordyceps, specifically ophiocordyceps. They're the main inspiration for this type of "zombie" (just stay away from any TLoU references, because spoilers).
btw did they tell you that Joe's adorable daughter is actually Thandiwe Newton's daughter, from West World etc??
Definitely one of the best modern TV shows out there. Really loved Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in this.
Fun Fact: Merle Dandridge is reprising her role of Marlene, from the game.
a lot of the other voice actors from the game are in the show in some capacity too!

I'm a huge tlou fan, I even own the guitar from the games and got a whole cabinet full of the stuff. You're starting at a good time, season 2 is when it really gets juicy

Spores are a major factor in the game, and much of the game is spent with gas masks on. That doesn't work as well for TV, so they changed how transmission works to biting.

Watching Fallout series right after TLOU is like discovering the cure for hangover. Both great shows that balance each other very well and scratch that post-apo itch.

Joel really hates the Fireflies mantra 'When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light" because light is literally the last thing Joel saw before Sarah was killed when the solider pointed his flashlight at them.

The slow build up was the climate change. The infection wasn't so much a build up as a mutation and reaction to that change in temperatures.

In the video game, injections were spread both by bites and spores. For the show, they went a different direction with the tendrils coming from the mouth and all.
The spore change is convenient for filming but really annoys me I can think of one iconic moment it already cost us and at least two more than it will

My perfect trifecta: Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and the Last of Us. Games that left me mentally depressed for days on end. This show certainly lived up to its predecessor
Those 3 games impacted me in such a way that I don't think most other media will ever have a chance to. If anyone thinks gaming is dead, make them play those 3 games.

Never thought you'd react to the Last of us show, They changed some stuff from the game, like the infection being caused by fungi, but remained faithful to the source material, like the the heavy opening scene, it's a super rough ride but I hope you stick with it and enjoy.☺💙

I'm definitely not a hype follower. Not after being let down so many times. I went in with 0 expectations since almost every game adaptation has let me down in the past, but I can say without a doubt, this is not only a great game adaption, but probably some of the best horror/thriller material ever produced. I hope you enjoy, and yes, this is INTENSE stuff. Much love!

This show is a lot. Take breaks! It is a beautiful story but that comes with heartbreak. Especially with season 2; just be aware and I hope you enjoy it.

I hope Mindhunter is on your To Do List, (even though personally I'd prefer you do Bbad/Saul/Sopranos or Severance etc first) you won't believe the difference between 'Tess' and her character on there, I just recently found out and was pretty stunned they were the same person. (And RIGHT after I post this…”wait, was she in Mindhunter?”)* 🤭
