    Pride in your work will always show whether it's later that day or 20 years down the road. I loved being a welding inspector and seeing the quality work these guys do. Some say welders are to mean and grumpy , no they are just trying to do the best job on the whole spread.

    as an old(73yrs) pipe welder myself I was curious about this video,I worked mainly power houses and some refineries but a real welder is still a real welder...it's definitely a young man's trade and a good one at that!I raised my kids and sent them to school,was always proud of my work and this guy gives good advice...remember,there's plenty of guy that can make a half way decent bead but there's very few WELDERS!!!

      My dad is an old pipe welder. He has been a member of UA Local 357 for over 50 years. He got all his experience welding at powerhouses and juice factories and wineries and pharmaceutical factories. I have learned a thing or two from him and I am not too bad at welding compared to many people that call themselves welders, but I never say I am a welder and I could never do what he's done. I know what a good weld should look like, and I know a good welder when I see one. I often say that you aren't much of a welder if you aren't a pipe welder that welded at a nuclear power plant.

We either cut with a hand held Victor or a Portaband if possible, and beveled with a grinder . Welded off a pipe vise or in position. No spinny things or autotorch or what ever its called . Keep up the good work if I was a younger man I might be out there nearby. :)

      Did a 'real' welder do the stainless TIG welding, or a self taught pretender, lol.
      I've refused to work with blokes who say "that'll do" plenty of times.

    I have a different opinion. I am a master electrician and my recently deceased dad was a pipeline welder for 40 years. Lining up screws and numbers on flanges has nothing to do with pride in work and everything to do with OCD. I cannot speak as a welder, but as an electrician, I can say that the best way to judge an electrician is by how his panel is terminated. In a residential install, go in the attic and look at the circuit runs. In commercial, look how his conduit runs with multiple conduits are all parallel and bends look like a "waterfall" (smooth). There is not much to screw up inside a wall as far as branch circuits go. The only variable is strapping/ stapling correctly. Most issues with non metallic cable ("romex") in walls occurs when other trades run screws and nails into the conductors, causing a short.

    I’m with you on the quality and craftsmanship, it seems the acceptable level of quality has dropped considerably over the past 20 years or so, but I can tell a 2” 300# raised face weld neck flange without the numbers, but I guess it would look neat if all the markings were clocked the same. Next time I’m fitting for myself I will try it, however I would have a hard time convincing a fitter to do it. He or she is not going to move their two hole pins just to keep the markings all the same. Plus maybe good American made fittings are all stamped in the same place, but some of foreign junk fittings that are purchased now days are not. Hell I’ve fabricated spools that had a Malaysia flange on one end and a Chinese flange on the other end and an India flange in the middle.

    • @TheKajunkat
      @TheKajunkat 6 лет назад

      your starts and stops of different passes on the same weld should be staggered. It is the most likely place to get shrinkage (crater) cracks. You don't want to line them up and produce a leak path. Of course, good welder practice is to grind back the start stops so you remove any cracks but "belt and suspenders" approach works too.

    • @dontehll454
      @dontehll454 6 лет назад

      These welds have only one-pass caps. So there’s only one start/stop. Nothing to stagger. Stagger when you have multiple passes on a cap. Different welds don’t require staggered stops and starts. Nothing wrong with these welds as far as I can see.

    What about when your welding in position. Doesn't look like you guys do that much.

    • @JacobSchofield
      @JacobSchofield  6 лет назад

      Rd Osborne we wed in position quite a bit but if we get the option we would rather roll it out It’s faster once you figure it out. As far as position I have 10-8” welds to do tommorow love position welds.

      The always use levels and when the pipe is level or plumb, they use the top two bolt holes and level them. So if you have your drop plumb, just level the top holes across.
