So nice to know that there are outfits like Type2 Detectives and Just Kampers to help you guys out, also glad tha John caught a great break that front wheel assembly, so well deserved👏👏👏👏👏👏
Well done Dom & John. I have to say that with the state of British roads i think lowered vehicles are getting to be a waste of time . I spent 52 years in tyre & managing a Garage & have seen so much destruction with lowered motors. I just cant see the point in it all but there you go. Take care.
First thing I did with my Isuzu was LIFT it 2" then add a proper steel sump guard. Gouges in the guard say both were good ideas when what I do means the occasional drive through "challenging" parts of the landscape...
Dom - I have an old optical wheel alignment tool. Used to be used by my dad. We're fairly local near Charing in Kent. Feel free to come along and have a look if it is of any use.
Don - I have just been looking at the Radio TImes. Letter of the week is in praise of your "Make it at Market" looks like there are people out there (apart from us sicofants) that really respect what you have done.
Hi Dom, glad you have been to see Paul at TYpe 2 detectives, I live close by and Paul is a wonderful friendly man who is always ready for a chat, his quality of restoration is second to none
@@gpw203 I don’t know what Dom used but I have successfully used Hammerite Kurust which I have painted on but it only comes in small tubs however, it does go a long way as it is a liquid rather than a gel and is great for suspension arms and that sort of think. Hope that helps, kind regards, Richard.
Classic case of fashion over function really, if you want to use it as a functional promotional vehicle...raise it up if that’s what a raised manhole does to it!
O.K. Dom, I'm finally convinced it's not another project. No getting 'all the right bits' -- a whole new assembly and back on the road, with extra ground clearance!
Hello Dom . Well that must have cost a few quid ! And my word ! Type 2 what an a amazing shop and the stock of cars and buses ......blimey ! Thanks Dom
Nice work Dom. You should post what rust converter you used, I like hydrate 80. I recommend you make up a solid pipe for the vacuum advance for the distributor. Brake line will do. It should have a bend in it that goes as high as the inlet or fuel will flow down and kill the vac can.
Loving that Porsche liveried type 2 at Type 2 Detectives around the 7 minute mark! We have a saying in the USA about sourcing old cars. "You go southwest for metal and north for interiors!"
The bit at the start when Dom go's "but iv got a plan" and the little grin love these videos the content is brilliant.. vws, porches, Vespas, metal forming/processing and two pals having a ball while doing it.. priceless.. I'm all over it keep up the good work fellas.
Well, at least the raised center pin will let your low riding VW clear more UK road hazards... nice to see it back on the road, with help from your mates
Dom glad you got it sorted, You need to fit the handbrake extension handle I gifted you, it'll make you more sensible and give you thoughts of stock height you young whippersnapper!, seriously though glad you got it sorted . Still loving the vids, keep em coming. Gary
Another great video! Can't wait to see the bus sign written with Ranalah on the side of it! Love the work that Paul and the Type2Detectives team do as well, I did one of their bootcamps a few years ago and it was very worthwhile!
Loving these car/van episodes Dom, but while others are interested in the work, I'm curious to know what proprietary treatment you used to A) convert the surface rust, and B) to cover/protect the underside from water and stone damage? I apologize if you've responded to this question elsewhere, but I couldn't be arsed to trawl through all the comments on the off chance you have 😁 Maybe you could pin your reply to the top of the comments, or add the info to your description, cheers 🍻
I thought you'd be tracking it in with the old fashioned method of two meter rulers, a pencil, and a bit of string! That's the way I've been tracking my v-dubs in for the last 30+years, haha. Well done getting it fixed anyway Dom - that beam will have cost you a pretty penny obviously but - "buy once - buy right" as they say. I recently bought just the same for my '62 - the whole front end, wheel to wheel, but with front discs by CB Performance, and built by Limebug. It's smooth. quiet and firm. Gorgeous and worth every penny. I'm still trying my hardest to get used to you looking over my shoulder by the way. You know every time you do it, God kills a kitten, don't you? Lol. Have a good day fella.
What a beauty that complete front beam axle, Jon's face lit up when he saw it. The video brought back nice memories, when I left school in 1969 I worked for mobile electrics. I took off and repaired VW dynamo's and starters and many other makes. I was also tasked to make brake pipes with what was called Bundy pipe (Thanks Jon for nice memory) and I also looked after the battery bank 🙂
Great vid Dom, some lovely kit. Back in the day had the same brake flaring tool! Restored a bay camper too! Cheers, Martin. ps. Sort out your focus, doing my head in! 🥴x
Takes me back 30 years to doing my 1970 Beetle. Thank you. Just wish I had the dosh to go to Type 2 Detectives and say, "I'll have that one, please. Cash?"
That was very satisfying. I'm always pleased to see rust going away. Also, the music was done very nicely with it not competing with your voice and the levels being very well balanced. 😊
Am I missing something here? Why was the suspension too low? I’ve seen other similar vehicles almost scraping along the ground. A VW camper van is not a low slung Lamborghini. What is the thinking behind this?
The guys at Type 2 are brilliant, that front suspension and steering rig does really look the business. John's face was a real picture when he saw it, obviously rates the work they do. One project out of the way🤗 back to the Porsche!
Would making a bash plate not be a good protective little project. I have a vague recollection that my parents Kombi splitty which isn't lowered having some sort of pressed steel panel underneath the front end.
This was fantastic! you've got some good people working with ya to help this come back to life so quickly! But we didn't even get to see you wear John's Signature Hat to play a game of "who wore it better?"
You just need a car old enough not to have hydraulic brakes. I recommend Riley 9s. 1 brake cable (string as I call it) that loops around all 4 wheels and you're done!
I have seen dozens of videos where someone opens their garage doors and shows their fleet to the youtube audience. Very rarely is it something as inspired as this. So many of the car mods are so well done and it's refreshing to see novel VW restoration. CT, who has his own youtube channel has asked his viewers how to retain the patina and peeling paint look of aging VWs - I suggested using a matt lacquer after wetsanding - I don't think it would work. Maybe your friend would share ideas with him.
Hi Dom, What did you spray the underside of the van with? It looks like it finally ended up in stonechip grey? I've got an old truck that needs treating. Thank you
I say similar most weeks. Hurrah for Jon! And wow what a super clean worship the Type 2 guys have. Workshop of dreams eh?! I actually think you pretty much did fly to the moon and back tbh. Top work team-Dom!
I've been looking for a tracking bar or similar device to adjust the steering for years. Unfortunately nobody makes new ones. And old ones are as rare as the holy grail.

if it was at standard ride height you would not have hit drain cover
Not gonna lie, I thought, “Well that’s horrible but maybe he’ll take the hint and raise it up a bit.” What a great surprise for John, though.
Loved the trip to T2D. Great addition to the bus with the new beam

Great it see it back on the road but I think I'd fiiting deeper profile tyres for a bit more ground clearance, my nerves couldn't cope with it as is!
Maybe in the American Southwest, it could last a while but here in the Midwest rust would own it real quick,
