I think Aretha knew this would be her last appearance at the Kennedy Center. She loved Carole, she loved Mr and Mrs Obama, and even through battling cancer, she blows the roof off the building. Long live the Queen. RIP Lady Soul.

The "chick" was Carol King, the songwriter and musician. This was the Kennedy Center Honors given to King, George Lucas (the guy next to "the chick") and others. Franklin was in her 70's and know to be very poor health, so her performing King's music was a huge honor to King. From Franklin's first note King, Obama and the audience knew Franklin still had it. That's why "the chick" freaked out. By the way, King's Tapestry album is #25 on Rolling Stone's greatest albums of all time, and is consider one of the greatest songwriters of the 60's and 70's.

We all have to remember, Aretha still had her voice up to the end. It was her illness which caused her voice to sound airy, and she had to take more breaths in between. Cancer really stinks, and we lost a legend when we lost her! She gave it all here, and still brought down the house

It's amazing that even at that stage of her life, she still had such vocal prowess. Usually the voice just goes after you spend so long singing, but it's a testament to the strength of her voice.

The Queen of Soul singing for the woman who wrote the song just for her. You would do well to look up Carole King and her legacy. There's a reason she was receiving that Kennedy Center Award.
