Very cool ! In 1972 I was 10 years old and would listen to my AM radio non stop. This Hollies tune was one of the first guitar riffs that resonated with me and I couldn’t ever quite figure it out , so thanks for sharing this ! The wah pedal in Breads “ Guitar Man” and also in the song “Shaft” were two more that I remember I didn’t know what it was but someday I wanted to play guitar….thanks Marty!😎🎸

This is one of the first songs I really learned. Don't know why but the intro just fell into my hands. My same age friends had never heard it (1983 or so, 7th grade). My older friends were blown away. It was killer.

I was taught this song in 1982 by a professional musician friend. He played it exactly the way you play it. I've been playing it this way ever since. Most how to videos don't teach it this way and most don't sound exactly like the original. I take that with a grain of salt as I have learned other nuances about this song from them. In my opinion, you are spot on. I would like to see how you play the bridge. I feel I'm pretty close but not exact. Not sure whether it's notes or timing. Thanks for a great video.

For the record, it was lead singer Allan Clarke who came up with and played this guitar riff, not Tony Hicks although he added some rhythm guitar after the fact. I credit Allan for this one classic lick of a lifetime for someone not regarded as a guitarist. He also co-wrote the song as well and it was originally supposed to be for a solo album that he was working on, but it was the thing that got him back into The Hollies after he quit earlier. It was included on their Distant Light album.

Agree, this song always had a very "American" sound to it. I think you're right- I think they were doing their best "Creedence" impression with this tune. But their 60's hits were decidedly "British" in nature!

I thought this was a Rolling Stones song. Who knew that the Kinks did it. The Beatles probably wrote it, David Gilmour contributed to it, EVH soloed over the chord changes and Neil YOung contributed "acoustic accents" This song was written back when bands liked each other. And artists would lend a helping hand.
Great video. I love the range of music you cover. This would have sounded awesome thru the Friedman cranked on the porch. ALL your neighbors would have brought you tuna casserole and salad.

The only odd part about 2/3 into the song it seems to hang on the A for a while. Most of these "Lessons" seem to only cover the main licks, and basic chords. There is a second guitar playing similar to the main guitar, on a different string octave. Otherwise it is a simple song. The overall recording is lo Fi , kind of tinny sound, no real drive on the guitars. I liked other Hollies songs better, like, "Look through any window". That one has more variation and melody in it.
