Just also want to mention that there are a few other differences on the Sega Genesis Flashback box. There is a "fifth" white circle with the rewind feature being advertised. The 2P controller shown only has the start button. The picture on the front box is of the updated model with Atgames logo moved. The slider on the actual unit is cosmetic and does not function.

John Hancock To get the Flashback to read the update, you need to change the file name to “sega_update.img”. Then, to play ROMS, add a “GAME” folder to the SD card and put them there. ROMS can’t have spaces in the file names, so replace them with _

I had no idea there was an updated 2018 model until this video. I notice some game differences such as Judge Dredd which is on your 2018 model but definitely not included with the 2017 model which I own. It also looks like your 2018 model has a fewer number of those garbage homebrew games that nobody wants.
+1 Sega Genesis Flashback. This thing really isn't to bad. It seems like most people are hating without even trying it. The emulation is good, the controllers are good. I was able to hack it and add about 100 games, and removed the "bonus" games.
Janelle Lalum the flashback is good for casual fans but for purest it’s not the good. Frame skipping is horrible in some games such as mk3 sonic 2 xmen etc.

I thoroughly tested it together with other youtubers here. It really IS bad, if you want to play longer rpgs especially. It produces glitches that make some games completely unplayable. If you only play some sonic or ristar you won’t experience any problems

When you update the firmware for the Flashback it can really do a lot. It has built-in games, you can play most games off of cart, and it can also play roms on an SD card. Pretty versatile.
People just see “AtGames” and immediately crap all over it because their previous Sega Genesis versions were trash. However, I feel like they got it right (finally) with the HD Flashback version.

Got lucky and paid $29 for a used unit and bought a loaded SD card off of eBay for $22... so basically got Genesis HD with almost the entire catalog for 52 smackaroos shipped! Retro Gamers dream come true🤘

The 2018 Flashback is actually really nice. The menu was upgraded for ease of use and the emulator is vastly improved.

I feel like the flashback is fine for my vote. I have been enjoying with no real issues. I feel the Sega Retron looks more like the dreamcast which is pretty cool tho! But Flashback +1
You don't have to use the x and y buttons to change pages on the 2018 Flashback. You can navigate down to the very bottom and switch pages with the D pad. The 2018 edition is running an improved emulator. There is information on it in the About section. I'm afraid this isn't a real fair competition because Atgames chose to keep the updated model such a secret, not a lot of people have one.

+1 Sega Genesis Flashback2018. You don't have to collect cartridges, brighter colors, and still have a cartridge slot if you want. Seems like a better deal.
Yeah but a majority of the included games doesn't run very well, often had glitches, and freezing issues. The cartridge slot also doesn't support every games and a lot that it did support had the same issues as the included games. The only games that doesn't had issues are the non-Genesis games but those games are boring.
The freezing issue seems to be fixed on the 2018 model. This was definitely a glaring issue with the 2017 model.
@@treyslay753 I may had to check that one out soon, I hope some of the issues and compatibility got resolve. If I could find one for cheap I'll do an update review on that one.
@@VOAN Than I want to know which games won't run well because mine (I got the NEW SEGA FLASHBACK EUROPE 2019 (82 games build in) version and it plays ALL games even NBA JAM TE / LION KING / CONTRA / VIRTUA RACING / SUPER STREET FIGHTER 2 (that had problems on older models) I also modded it so I can add more games on it. On GBATEMP someone made software to hack it and ADD games through the SD slot. We will make a video soon for this system on the Wicked Gamer & Collector YT Channel
I had the 2017 version and I sold that one, because it has indeed many glitches and sound problems. But the 2019 version is SOOOO much better.
- Better Mega Drive Mold and build quality
- Better Menu Navigation with the D-pad
- As far as I know all games work (didn't notice many issues)
- Finally a better Battery valves (no more screwdriver needed)
- standard 5v USB power cable
- Option to add more games though SD slot
- Option to hack it easy through SD slot (you don't need to open it up anymore)
+1 AtGames Flashback 2018 has to go through due to the SD card support which means no even having to risk inserting a genuine cart.
Very pleased at the new firmware, but there are some sound issues in some titles I noticed.
Speed tends to be good, and am hopeful for firmware updates so that thumbnails for game on the SD card can be used too.

+1 Mega Retron HD. The fact that it plays the Everdrive is what REALLY matters to me.
You can add al your mega Drive games on the SD card and play them as well and make quick save and loads.
Atgames 2018 Genesis is the best clone so far. I have no problem with the SD card slot and added many of my all time favorite games to it and they mostly all play good. I am excited about the mini version made by Sega that will be coming out later this year, hopefully someone hacks it to add more games too.

I'd love to hear the sound comparisons of each vs. the original model Genesis. To me, it's just as important as image quality, and more-so than features.
I'm surprised the Retron works with the Everdrive. That's really cool.
You'll have to put that up against the MegaNT (or whatever its called,) when that gets released later this year.
Hopefully they update Mr. Balls to Mr. Scrotum for the 2019 model of the flashback.

I put roms on the flashback classic. At first they wouldn't load but I shortened the names of the roms and now they work fine!
I mistook the mega retron for the Mega sg and made a comment that I deleted. Lol. However I still choose the updated flashback. Save states are a must for me. Plus the system has been updated to fix compatibility. Never thought i'd choose atgames.

I think both units have their ups and downs, but the Mega Retron HD was the biggest surprise for me. Sure, it doesn't have the games preloaded, and that will make or break the purchase imo, but I have to vote for the Mega Retron HD due to it being the best clone Genesis we've ever got.
I wanna +1 for the flashback because it comes loaded with games. If thats not important to the john handcocks of the world cause u have every game then i understand but my sega collection is small right now and it coming with 30 plus games is important to me.
Nerd or Die check out Aliexpress I bought a 112 in one cartridge that has all the best games on for around £8, they also do repo fan hack carts shadow in sonic 1 being my favourite and that only cost around £3 worth the wait in shipping trust me
NOTE: Make sure your SD card is 4GB to 16GB. No larger than 16GB. Also, make sure it’s formatted to FAT32 and that there is nothing else on the SD card. Leave it empty except for the update file. Also, remember to RENAME the file according to instructions on AtGames web site.
BTW, I got the 2018 model but it did NOT have the AFZ “flashback zone” logo on the box.
That’s SUPER confusing for shoppers.

The Reason: Sega Genesis Flashback 2018 has an SD CARD SLOT!
Even the Sega Mega Drive II Console has an SD Card Slot! The only downfall to that is it only fits the Micro SD Card because of the smaller SD Card Slot. I Honestly DON'T CARE if the Mega Retron HD can play Virtua Racing. Sure this is great, but that's JUST 1 GAME. With the SD Card Slot, you can play MANY GAMES that are Homebrews & Hacks, etc...! One of my favorites is Mortal Kombat 2.322! Speaking of "Mortal Kombat 2.322" this game is another version like "Mortal Kombat II Unlimited" but is Exclusive only as a ROM for an SD Card, until AliExpress ever has this game in Cartridge form.
Flashback hd 2018. Mostly because of sd card and I bought it off groupon before Xmas for $34.99

I do prefer the Flashbacks UI, aside from the x/y pagination, I like the thumbnails. But that's not enough to win it
Both shady companies but surprisingly i have to give the Genesis Flashback 2018 this one for the fact of built in games PLUS an sd card which without a doubt will be utilised for roms. The fact this also takes carts is like an added bonus for what seems to be a cheap yet solid plug and play system essentially.

Mega Retron HD got my vote. It can be played on both CRT and HD television set. It can also play back almost all the Sega Genesis games including ones with special chips in them.
+1 Sega Genesis Flashback. I don't have any physical games and don't want to have to work at all to play. This works fine and requires no work to start playing games right away.

If you remove the casing of the power base converter it works with the unit. It also allows it to play 3D and light phaser games with the AV cables.
+1 Mega Retron HD. Owner of both and the Mega Retron HD wins to me because it uses the actual cartridge to play the game unlike the Flashback which uses emulation and a rom dump from the cart. Love these videos Mr John thanks and can't wait to see who the champ ends up being.
+1 Mega Retron HD. I'm quite surprised with this lil guy, seems to run everything, and the audio reproduction and hdmi output quality is very good considering the price. A great system while I wait for the Analogue Mega SG to come out xD

+1 Flashback. Main reason is all the games on it that most people can,t find or can,t afford such as all the Phantasty star games.
Not sure if any1 can help but the MegaRetron looks so blurry/blobby on the captures I've seen, the Flashback looks pixel perfect to me, is it just the capture cards or is it actually like that on screen? Cannot seem to find any raw dumps of the device footage either.

Supposedly the at games one that has the sega Genesis logo where the cartridge goes without the at games next to it, is the good one.

+1 Mega Retron HD. Also, play games with the lower horizon at resolution, namely Super Street Fighter 2. The Retron messes up the scaling slightly.

Also I did notice the front of the Sega flashback front of box is different, the 2018 has 5 features on the lower left side and the 2017 has only 4 features.

Has the features you need and want like both HDMI and AV cables for just about any tv. Its responsive on the games. Basically, that's all you need, no issues running games. I'm going to try and get one now.

I like to play my games, and some of them are repros, hacks and homebrew. The compatibility is beyond all other Sega Genesis clones so far and at a great price. I do like the look of the Atgames Sega Genesis Flashback, with the wireless controllers and games pre installed, but it can't play all my carts.

+1 Mega Retron HD for sure. I really enjoy playing Virtua Racer so it would be play in HD. I have the AT Games one and it sucks for sound, but didn't know there was a 2018 remake. Great video.
I still enjoy my 2017 AtGames model, but the 1 thing the 2018 model has that I wish I had was the SD slot for updating future firmware. But like you said in your video that isn't updating properly, so no big deal. Also are there actually different games on the 2 models, it seemed like the same, but hard to tell. Going through the menu on the new model looks like it's way better and streamlined to just use the directional pad to navigate which is cool also! Thanks for the video! Take Care!

I own the 2017 Flashback HD, and I enjoy it quite a bit, but I can't overlook the cart compatibility problems that apparently still haven't been addressed with the 2018 edition. So my vote is Mega Retron HD +1

At Games has an awesome built in library, Retron more compatible....hmmm just depends on what you're looking for.
+1 retron - another tough one. flashback has better looks, and pre-loaded at least some decent games, so you can just open it and play. but it looks like, for long term, retron might be better/more flexible. and when it comes down to it, playing the games is more important to me.
I'm just noticed really quickly on the Atgames box theres 4 white circles in the left corner and on the other theres 5 so not sure whats in the circles I didn't zoom in or check as I'm watching this on my tablet so another difference there whateva it is
Hyperkin MegaRetroN HD +1. I was thinking if I would start collecting Sega games. Clone console would best for modern TVs. I also already have Sega Megedrive Collection XB1 and PS4. So no need for flashback system. Sadly my shelves are full so skipping physical collection this time.

I was discover how te Flashback 2018 plays ALL THE SEGA CD LIBRARY, inlcuding the SPECTACULAR MUSIC AND SOUND... :)
+1 Mega Retron HD : I have played on the Flash back. I was not as impressed as I was with the Mega Retron. I own the Mega Retron and I absolutely love it. It's solid in game play for the games I own. There is a minor issue with the bass sometimes being overpowering, but other than that, the colors are vibrant (unlike the Retron 1 HD, which they used a weird palette) and it plays beautifully.
+1 for mega retron HD it’s better cuz you can play physical hardware as well as imports being able to change aspect ratio.When the analogue mega sg comes out though it’s gonna blow this thing away but this is not bad for playing genesis games on a newer tv

+1 for the Mega Retron HD. This system has everything you would remember from original hardware except the look. I personally prefer functionality over looks and this system seems to deliver pretty solid performance. Unfortunately, AtGames didn’t seem to care about the quality control of their products nor building a new firmware to correct all the bugs their systems have.
Seems like AtGames finally fixed the stereo sound problem that I think was on last years model. It seems like they are gradually taking critiques but I also wonder if this is basically the Mega Drive Mini system that SEGA veto'd. I still find it odd that they've already been selling these for years and Sega was merely going to hire them to release a mini system.
Personally, I'm more curious about the Mega SG from Analogue, though I imagine I will be sticking to my Model 1 for a while.
+1 for the Mega Retron, as the firmware of the atgames console has too many bugs (some rpg are completely unplayable as they glitch out with a white screen)
Great videos, I hope you don't forget those batteries in the controllers if you don't plan using the system. Here on Lesvos island I change batteries monthly, they rust real quick.

While I am not an ATGAMES hater (I voted for the new Atari Flashback 9 on your last video), it appears the Retron is the better choice this round... I don't have either product, but based on your compatibility tests, and the price points I can find, it appears the Retron works a bit better... The only positive to the ATGAMES Flashback unit is the library of games... in my case, I don't have any of my old Sega carts anymore.... so having a library of some of the classics built in is a nice touch....so really, the buying choice should be based on what the user wants out of the unit. Hmmm...would I rather have 85 games included, or the ability to play Virtua Racing? Playing Virtua Racing & home brews aren't top priorities for me.
So I'm gonna go with the one that looks like the original Genesis, comes w/ 85 games, plays MOST carts, and has an SD slot.
+1 2018 At Games Sega Genesis Flashback love the fact that it uses similar cell phone power cord the best thing is you can play the great games built then for advanced gamers you can play the original game cartridges I’ve been a huge fan of all the At Games products the very sturdy built well at an extremely reasonable priced usually you can pick them up at Walgreens or Bed Bath & Beyond for less then $40.00 love the design looks like original system thank you for these great videos lol you always been my favorite out of the MJR crew keep up the great work god bless

+1 Mega Retron HD. I like that the genesis has built in games and a cart slot, but the cart compatibility is the deciding factor for me.
