i'm not doing any of that with my wobbly vertebrae, but just wanted to say, it's a perfect youtube video - no waffling, no shaky camera, it's so succinct and clear
Muito bom. Tem pessoas que acham que a capoeira é algo fácil, bobo de fazer. Mas ao executar os movimentos é que percebemos quanto treino precisa. Quanta força precisa ter nos braços e pernas. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This is a pretty cool progression video! I'm not a practitioner of Capoeira but I always wanted to get this move down to add to my move set. Thanks so much!
Alexandre Kelleher Thanks for the feedback. I'm curios to know how things are going. I'm working on my next set of videos, so I'd love to hear what you'd like to see next.
Thank so much! I'm a professional modern dancer and my company decided to take on some dance combat choreography, so here I am. Easily comprehendible even for someone who has never seen it before. Really helpful!
It sure it is a leap of faith Valentona. One thing that helped me was approaching the hop from the below, and from above. What I mean by that is that I worked both on arching my back when I did the standard Au, and from below by working on the "Ponte" (bridge) drills. Other than that, all I can suggest is to work on that leap on a cushioned surface to help you loose the fear of falling. I think everyone ends up falling a few times on this one. Good Luck!
I really like how you broke down this au de costa (that's what we call it in my group :) ). I am definitely using your tips and this video to work on mine. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the encouraging words. Means a lot. Just released another video. It's not so much a tutorial, but more of sharing a personal sequence practice. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Thank you. So, it is a leap of faith in fact (i thought it was just me - as when i watch you and another capoerista doing it it looks ontrolled and like a hop.) Thank you for that advice and i will keep working on it on a cushioned floor : )
That's pretty awesome!! Totally reminds me of doing a gramby when I wrestled in high school. I think I might learn how to do what you showed now, for fun.
Thanks for this great video. I ve been trying to build flexibility and strength in this position and since i am learning alone capoeira i was afraid to try moves like these so that i wont damage myself. Make more tutorials please
GeoCode6 Thanks for the feedback. It's a bit tough to learn capoeira on your own. I'd always recommend finding a school, but don't let not having a school stop you from it. Capoeira is just too awesome not to give it your best, even when facing challenges. I'd love to hear what you are working on or what you'd like to see. I may turn into a future video.
You are right, i would love to have a angola mestre but i live in Greece and in my town there is only one school but they mostly do regional stuff and its not my style. So we are having a group playing capoeira and teaching one another whenever we have time (thank science there is youtube). My main problem is handstands and not having back flexibility so your videos are very helpful already.
Nice, bro! Thank you. That was motivating and inspiring. Made it look smooth, and also accessible. I love the (forgive the newby lingo) drill of rolling into and out of the back bridge. I so need that for flexibility and body memory. CHEERS!
Additional information: "Esquisito" means "weird" in portuguese, "Coluna" means "column" but also the way we call "spine", "Costas" means "back" (and also "coast"). "Aú" (pronounced ah-OOH) maybe is an onomatopia or an African word. It is meaningless to anyone here who doesn't know capoeira. It is the "cartwheel" movement. ("popularly" or "non-capoeirist" known here as "estrela" which means "star") Aú esquisito = Weird Aú Aú de costas = Aú by/from back Aú de coluna = Aú by/from spine
Wow lot of au variation, i just can do cartweel only. But how to combine au with other move or other au ?. I can do cartwheel but i want it combine with other move but feel not flowing.
It's the capoeira toque called "jogo de dentro" I can't remember if this specific track is from Mestre Jogo de Dentro or the Grupo Capoeira Angola do Pelourinho but you probably can't not find out here on youtube
This is a great tutorial! But wow man... I can't even reach the floor with my second hand while trying the bridge-spin-bridge drill you showed. It feels like my shoulders and back are made of concrete so I can't really reach back with my hand... my arm just stops in mid air. What do I need to get out of this, just practicing and exagerating my brige/ponte? Something else?
Sorry for the super late reply. I'm really curious to hear how you are doing with your shoulder flexibility now. The idea to exaggerate the bridge is not a bad one. Focus on sticking out your chest to help open up the shoulders. You can also do the same on a hand stand propped against the wall: Get on a handstand close to the wall with your back facing the wall. Then walk the hands away from the wall, while keeping your feet on the wall; they'll go lower on the wall as you walk away. Focus on sticking your chest out too. I would also recommend adding yoga to your regiment. It will do wonders for your flexibility, and there's tons of channels that are easy to access on youtube. I hope it helps. BTW I just released a new video. It's a bit different from a tutorial; just sharing a sequence. Hope this helped.
Good to hear Akita Chua. Let me know how it turns out, and feel free to post a video reply if you feel up to it. I'd be awesome to see your progress! Thanks for watching.
Thanks GHessenthaler! I'm glad to know it helps! Feel free to suggest tutorials for other moves you'd like to learn. I'm still learning myself, but I'll do my best to help if I can. I'm always looking for inspiration.
At a statuesque... 5'5' I've been told I move around in the roda, and outside the roda, like a Macaquinho. I love doing Volta por simas, macaco's, S Dobrado's, etc. Outside the roda, it's hard for me to not to be tempted to jump on any climbable surface. I've been like this ever since I remember.... The other day I caught myself clapping with my feet. I'm not sure they could have called me anything else.
Thanks for all the encouragement everyone! I've been very busy, but I can't wait to do another tutorial. Any moves you guys would like to see? I'm thinking about doing a macaco tutorial, but I'm open to suggestions.
Great video man, I love it, and I love your presentation style, and you include the blooper to make us all feel a bit more human (: I look forward to seeing your more recent videos. Sub.
Thank you for the encouraging words - I’m now slowly transitioning into a new evolution of the channel. We are starting a group in Atlanta, and i want to share that journey. Follow us on Instagram at @capoeiratc - (Capoeira Training Club) to see newer things. We’ll also be setting up a channel on RUclips soon
Thanks! Now we are in the process of building a Capoeira community in Atlanta. We call ourselves the Capoeira Training Club and will start posting more to those pages. For now we are just on Instagram @CapoeiraTC, soon to be posting about the adventures of our growth and providing more useful content. :)
Hey man, i have been working on this move for a half tear now. Let me ask you, did you get that much of your back flexibility from doing the bridge alone before you moved onto the hop? Or you train the hop and it improved your back flexibility. Thanks for your video, 1 more question , is this gumby style will help in raiz or does it feel like you are doing raiz with your hands on the ground?
Cool stuff man. I'm actually getting back into shape. But this time, I'm more lean and getting more flexible. I even eat right and I'm on herbalife, which I made more positive and encouraging friends. But capoeira is a big interest to me. Cool
Louis Alexander I hope you have found a capoeira family to be with. Learning the art is one thing, the family that comes with it is a million times more rewarding.
Woah, this guy flows like water. 0:30 - he's able to get his leg straight and high, above his head i think, but when i try it, my tendons literally dont stretch that far. There any stretches you can recommend to work my way to perfecting that kick?
Oh man! I just read your comment from a year ago. Thanks for the compliments. I'll probably post a vid in the future of how to stretch for leg flexibility. I would recommend adding yoga to your regiment. Any warrior pose will get your legs stretching. Downward dogs are great too. I would also do straddle stretches.
gerisboyle Thanks for checking out the video all the way to the end! That's an Au trocado, and here's where I learned it. ruclips.net/video/3y_IwQi5d7k/видео.html
You should see my gumbi variation! I mix it with a helicoptero. Right side gumbi hyper legged. Then swivel the hips into a helicoptero! Its a sexy move!
+English Learner Haha! I'm almost afraid to ask what a bunda press is. With the meaning of the word bunda being butt and all, but I'm curios. Can you describe the move?
you can practice using the edge of your bed: you stand near one of the corners of the bed and place one hand on the floor, right in front of the bed, and then you throw the other hand, while your back goes above the mattress, it helps a lot and its safe
yess! huge props on making this. no one really breaks it down like this! thanks!
Great step by step tutorial....And it works with patience....Thank you....
i'm not doing any of that with my wobbly vertebrae, but just wanted to say, it's a perfect youtube video - no waffling, no shaky camera, it's so succinct and clear

Do you have any tips for adding the little bit of hop into it - it feels like a leap of faith for me ? Thanks
Nice job
where did you get your capoeira shoes?

im wanting to do this but I don't know a good way to get more upper body strength. does anyone know any good ways?
Push ups, Bridges, dips, pull ups. The basics. No need for weights or anything else. Stretch.
Random question.....but what are those trainers? I've seen loads of people with them!
Cool stuff man. I'm actually getting back into shape. But this time, I'm more lean and getting more flexible. I even eat right and I'm on herbalife, which I made more positive and encouraging friends. But capoeira is a big interest to me. Cool
