  • Today I restore a BMW E30 325i Brake Caliper! Car brakes are always a fun projected to take on. Anyone can do it and it's relatively cheap to do.
    Please read the full description for any information about the video.

    Just for the record, I personally wouldn't have red calipers on my E30. The red just looked too good on camera not to go with it.
    Firstly I inspected the caliper for ware and tare and decided to order a full caliper service kit. I then disassembled it and degreased the main pieces. Once they were dry I placed them in the blasting cabinet and removed 99% of the rust. I then had to go over with a steel wire wheel, on a rotary tool to remove the rest of the deep rust. It was then a matter of masking all of the threaded holes and piston cylinder.
    The caliper then needed etching, priming, colour, and lacquer. Once dry I made sure the grooves in the cylinder were free from any rust or paint and began adding the new parts. I started by greasing the first gasket and pushed it in. The outer seal was then added. I then greased the piston and pushed that back in. The two guide pins and their rubbers were silicone greased and pushed in. The two pieces then came together with new bolts. The cleaned bleed nipple was then added, and the red cap to finish the restoration.

      Ahh so you are doing a complete E30. I was wondering why you were restoring all of these parts and hoping this would be the case. As I have several project vehicles myself i'll be following that series closely. As an aside. It's awesome that they make rebuild kits or at least offer the parts individually to rebuild those calipers! Looks like E30 support is still strong. The 3 series is just excellent.

    Protip: Take some brake fluid on your finger and coat the piston seal and a coat the bottom half of the piston also. The piston will go in a lot easier and the seal won't dry out if you don't plan on using the part for a while. Also, install the dust cover on the lip of the piston first then press it into the caliper after the piston is seated in the bore, then press the dust cover into the recess of the caliper.

    After degreasing I would have thrown it to a bath of phosphoric acid for a day. Cleans up every nook and cranny, doesn't harm the parts and usually no need for a wire brush afterwards. But nevertheless, good job and props on using silicone grease on the slide pins!

    Congrats on 200k subscribers.
    Locktite on the bleed nipple isnt needed, the nipple is the one part you want to move when bleeding the brakes.
    I've always found it easier to fit the piston before the dust cover, either way its still fiddly.
    Perhaps nickle plating the nipple would have added a bit of oooh, aaaarh and stopped future rust.
    Nice work as usual.

    Can’t read every comment but didn’t see it mentioned : one spot you didn’t mask (and should have) is the surface the brake ads will ride on. This needs to be clean steel so the pads slide smoothly. I’m not an E30 expert but just want to let you know in case some paint needs to be removed from those areas. One area of the car not to mess around with; brakes. Love the channel. Keep up the great work.

    I do a lot of work similar to this. I bought a large heated ultrasonic tank to clean parts in. I use 50% Simple Green and water. Sometimes, I let the parts sit in it overnight. This has been a game-changer for me and I cannot say enough positive things about it.

    Very nicely done, very professional. Tidbits: Loctite is not needed on the bleeder valve because you have to open it for bleeding. Also, you can put the piston in then put it's seal on afterwards with some grease. By doing this, you would not need a caliper piston tool to force the piston in. You also could save the rubber seal from getting damaged and it would overall be easier.

    Just restored my cars front left brake caliper. I tell ya, masking the inside of the cylinder is not an easy job. Even after degreasing and drying with warm air, the masking tape didn't want to stick to the wall of the cylinder.
    I don't have a sandblasting setup (only a self-made one that sucks...), so I removed the rust with:
    1., wirebrushing twice, accessing small inner curves was difficult... it removed most of the rust flakes
    2., using phosphoric acid solution (20%) to dissolve the rust on the surfaces, twice again
    3., wirebrushing again to get rid of the remaining product of the acid
    4., soaking and washing the caliper in nitro-thinner, it washed off the acid remanants.
    After primering, I painted the caliper twice, leaving about 2 hours between the first and second layer. I guess there's no need to sand it after applying the primer, since the surface of the caliper/pads holder is originally rugged.
    I found that replacing the dust cover to the caliper/piston is easier if you put the dust cover onto the pistons bottom to let the outside lip of the cover free, putting the o-ring (soaked with brake fluid) into the cylinder, then placing the piston in place, while the outer lip of the cover snaps in to its place. Then I pushed the piston all the way in, the inner lip snapped to its place too. Wetting the piston with brake fluid makes it easier to put it together, you want to take care not to spill brake fluid on the freshly painted surface to avoid etching of the paint.

    Small tips for your next caliper restoration (rear set ? ;) )
    A little piece of plywood might prevent any scratches when bumping out the piston.
    You can blast with something a little harder if you leave the piston and the old boot in place. No risks for the bore.
    It's better to close the threaded input with the old brake hose when blasting.
    It seems you've soaked the main seal in DOT before mounting, best way to do !
    A better way to mount the main boot is to install it on the bottom edge of the piston prior, then in the caliper. Really easier and no pinches.
    Same thing for the smaller boots. Install it on the shaft first, a lil'bit of grease and insert it in the caliper mount.
    The only mistake is the thread-locker on the bleeder. Really frail part so ... really bad idea.
    In fact I'm even using cooper grease for the bleeder and the hose.
    I like rebuilding calipers, nice and peaceful operation, except the blasting step. And ... it might be useful ... sometime ...

    Polished up beautifully. As a mechanic though I'd advise to file the paint off the brake pads contact areas on the carrier and the caliper. And to clean up the lock tight from that bleed nipple or it will be hell to do brake maintenance in the future. But im not bitching just trying to help!!!

    • @Tailss1
      @Tailss1 5 лет назад

      I doubt new OEM calipers for a BMW would be that cheap.

    • @SchweinungHD
      @SchweinungHD 5 лет назад

      Amazing if you can find them so cheap. Here in Norway, a single, used caliper in semi-ok condition is probably around $100, and then you'd have to restore that aswell.
      An aftermarked, not as good as OEM caliper is probably around $200+.

    • @Tailss1
      @Tailss1 5 лет назад +1

      Also here where I live if you put used brake parts on a vehicle it would void the road worthiness certificate. Rebuilding a brake caliper however is fine providing it is done correctly. Only thing this chap missed is honing the cylinder before installing the new piston. I would think the rebuild kit is much cheaper then buying a whole new caliper.

    • @Tailss1
      @Tailss1 5 лет назад

      @@forevercomputing The piston was replaced and it's my understanding you should hone the bore to allow the new piston to seat properly. There is some seriously tight specs with these as working pressure (and heat) can be very high. Braking on a steep hill for example. There is no margin for error as this is a critical part of the cars brakes and you need to be able to trust it.

    Very diligent work. I personally would avoid any sandblast on machined/screw surfaces... heck if your getting new bolts anyway screw them in and blast them too. And for the smaller metal bits since you clearly are capable you might want to look at home powder coating kit from eastwood. Maybe powder coat is more durable for bits like like this?

    For the other three, consider using electrolysis to prepare them. It's especially good for rusty brake parts, the process doesn't affect the plated piston bores.

    Dont forget to sand off the paint where the ears on the brake pads/clips mount to the caliper. You need that area to be greased with anti seize lubricant. Hightemp copper works great.

    I just done my calipers up, with the slide rails I was so pleased you applied the correct lubricant, so many ppl use grease and either too much or not enough anyway, also not knowing the repercussions using the wrong lube, wear and leakage causing contamination ti the pads.
