- This video is a part of the talks given at TEDxIITKharagpur 2015, produced independently of the TED conferences. What makes a great film? What makes a bad film? As it turns out, of all the films that are produced, the most memorable ones are those that lie of the either ends of the spectrum. In this talk, Mayank Shekhar provides a sneak peek into the world of films. Movies are nothing but an outlet of the expectations of what a movie watcher wants to see. With songs and dance scenes dominating Indian cinema over scripts and acting, Mr. Shekhar discusses how our films can be improved in quality while maintaining their mass appeal.
Having hosted NDTV Prime Filmy, Mayank Shekhar, cultural editor at Hindustan Times, has always been accredited for his film reviews. Through his blog, The W14, he brings a unique perspective on movies, transcending the boundaries of entertainment journalism while striking just the right chord with the viewers.

I hate Bollywood since few years back bcoz of only love story movies are continued making

Indian movies:
Singing
Dancing
Fighting with no gravity
The actors are too talkative

I think film content are should be powerful that change mind of the audience.
You just summed up the entire situation.
Whenever I watch movies like the inception, the lunch box, the Shawshank redemption, etc. my family and friends always complain about having no song, dance , or masala in the films. In fact someone said me that inception was dumb, crazy and a boring film. So u guys get that why Bollywood produce these weird movies. What I think is that people should develop their minds for watching more artistic and clever films rather than watching movies like Gunda.
Even at this date my friends and family think that I watch weird n boring films whereas I think that they do.
Hollywood is far more superior than us. Be it movie or sitcoms. Most of the Indians movies and serials sucks and the public also buy those shits.

General Indian public don't watch a movie for it's aesthetic qualities, script or cinematography etc. They don't perceive it as a form of art.
In my view, most Bollywood actors either come from industry parents, uncles/aunts or the modelling industry. Once in a while an actor rises from the streets. Those are the guys that can actually act and get work outside India/Bollywood too!

I am the only one in my family who watches movies like interstellar and Goosebumps while majority of members and relatives get bored...that's why Bollywood makes shit movies...because they don't target me they target my family...because they have numbers to earn money...
Same here. Everyone in my family's want " down to earth films" but when I show them that kind of Hollywood films they say it's boring because there's no songs or dancing or action or whatever.
there's a movie called drishyam in malayalam (which was remade in hindi with ajay devgon) try to watch it. that movie itself says the level of malayalam movies.!

Ever watched bengali movies
In a country of 1.2 billion people there are many person with exceptional talent in film direction, acting, singing and many more. But todays generation(including me) always opt engineering not because they want to but due to peer pressure who think people in Bollywood are spoiled Brats not because of the films because how they show them(they always show that an actress is allowed to act in a movie if she sleeps with the director or the producer) and also there are star families who think that teir kids can act.
I also wanted to be a Director, writer but dreams crushed................

Sai Nagendra try being an indie film director. Times have changed. Now days anyone can just pick up a camera or a phone with good quality and make a film. So don't worry that much.
I might suggest a RUclips channel called DariousBritt of D4Britt. He helps in such things and his videos can be educational but also inspirational.

I simply don't watch box office hits. Then I remove movies with songs in it. Then I can see some decent Bollywood movie. The crapy mass market is the main reason why we have horrible hit movies.

Good critics don't necessarily make good films. That's what Anupama Chopra told me a couple days ago in a panel in the India Film Project.

One got to understand the pshychee of Indian cinema goers. Most have a very drab and boring personal life. No excitement same old routines to go through and hence need some no brainier entertainment, where they are not required to focus on things like continuty, laws of physics, great method acting etc. So what do we get? You are right movies that makes no sense to real life.
Victorino Ferrao Movies can be crazy and unrealistic but also be very well written. Look at Star Wars (I refuse to call it A New Hope), look at Superman 78, look at any good superhero movie ever. Look at the first Kingsman movie. Its not like everyone living in America has a crazy, over the top, super exciting life.
bros watch Malayalam movies and Tamil movies and see the level of maturity the movies have and the willingness to experiment. Bollywood has starts Tamil and Malayam movies have actors and directors.

Filmmakers make such kind of movies as indirectly support comes from major chunk of audiences who rather care about cinema only expect some cringeworth entertainment (As stress buster in their weekends to their daily frustrating routines)
Taste of Bollywood audiences maybe beyond worse as they gave movie like judwaa 2 200crores while movies like trapped and many other were ignored.
Better go for some Malayalam movies as they are high on content compared to Bollywood in India

Here in Nigeria a lot of people thinks kabhi kushi kabhi gam is among the top movies in the world. The first time i saw the movie all i can see in the movie is bad acting and display of wealth, a lot of Bollywood movies displays wealth, beauty and unrealistic love

I've only seen a few Indian films. A lot of the male actors in bollywood seem especially bad at acting... But when I hear Indians speak of them they say things like "His portrayal was so REAL!!" Sheesh. They can't even see awful acting when it's right in front of them.

Why does it matter what Hollywood or anyone makes? We like songs in movies. We make them and we watch them. Why do we say it is bad or good?
If you keep repeating it throughout every films it gets old really fast. Singing and dancing don't always work. That's why the west don't take you guys seriously.

Apologies, but I heard of Satya way before I heard of Gunda. While the speaker does make a few good points, just stringing words along does not make a speech. We have to understand that songs are not dissociated from Hindi movies, and that is not a bad thing - some songs have a role to play within the narrative. And don't movies from other industries have soundtracks now? The issues are the over-hyped actors, and the degree of acceptance from the public - there are things the audience cannot handle or digest. Film-making in Bollywood is very rarely about art, but then again, that is subjective. Let's not forget the masterpieces that do come from Hindi cinema.

On the contrary I don't like songs in a movie sometimes they feel like a distraction. Rajnikant does not sing or dance that much he became a star because of his style of acting and other gimmicks and tricks he pulls off .
