Yeah, I never imagined that Slade was really Deathstroke. I actually think it’s a storytelling problem that Slade’s real identity was never discovered in Teen Titans. Don’t get me wrong. He’s an excellent villain and one of the few characters I actually know that actually feels like a threatening and mysterious, dark, evil villain. The guy is really intelligent and is also very tactical and skilled using all sorts of weapons and evenly matched against Robin. He even managed to almost kill the Titan’s literally in one episode because of a virus trap that was set up for them and it was a very well thought out plan to try to control Robin. I love Slade so as much as I also think it would have done a bit more help to actually finish the story and have a real conclusion rather than the weak season we got as a final one, don’t get me wrong. He’s a great villain and was actually my favorite super-villain ever. He still is actually. I just think that because his identity was never mentioned as Deathstroke in Teen Titans and actually the fact that these characters don’t even feel like they would really be the same character is a discussion that could happen all in itself and it also just pins the problem that Slade was never finished being written as a character in the show which in my eyes was the only issue I actually have with Slade as a character. His identity and past are still too much of an entire mystery and the problem isn’t that it was mysterious but rather that part of his arc was just missing from the story. I love Slade as a character and I make that pretty clear but he does feel a little off with his identity. I wish his secret was really exposed a bit more. Even when we saw his helmet gone, it was literally only when his face was burnt and all we could see was a skeleton from him.

I've always found it fascinating that in his earliest appearances, despite him being "Deathstroke the Terminator," before the Cameron film, it was much more common, if characters on the page, or cover text, if they were going with a shortened version, to call him "Terminator" than "Deathstroke." Interestingly, it hung on as the title of his solo book well into the 90s, until after Zero Hour, when it briefly became Deathstroke the Hunted before finally just becoming Deathstroke. Also, am I the only comics/music nerd that always thinks of the 60s-70s British glam band whenever he is referred to as just "Slade"? Maybe it's just me...

I can't speak to what he's become, but I really enjoyed Deathstroke when he first appeared. He was a serious dude in and out of costume, (the eye-patch) and an interesting character because not evil, just ruthless. So, not like the TT-Go character. (Though I enjoy both, (watching with my grands :D) As always, for all your work & efforts, knowledge & observations, and many wonderful videos, thank you so very much.
Great vid! Although the series was sometimes vague, this Robin is definitely Dick Grayson. In the episode where his alternate universe version "Larry" came to visit he said his real name was "nosyarG kciD" aka Dick Grayson.
In the comics, they referred to him *once* as "Deathstroke, the Terminator" on the splash page of NTT #2, but then he was exclusively referred to as "The Terminator" for the next four years after that. The word "Deathstroke" didn't appear in print again until 1984, when the movie "The Terminator" was released. At that point, the creative team apparently said, "Well, we can't call him the Terminator anymore... what else can we call him?", then went back and dug up the almost-forgotten name Deathstroke from the first panel where he'd appeared. And suddenly, with no in-story explanation, he was referred to exclusively as Deathstroke from that point on.
Huge Deathstroke fan here. He's one of my top favorite DC characters of all time. I pretty much enjoy every incarnation of him, but I have to admit that I'm a bit behind on his New 52 younger body version.
Sasha, it is fantastic to watch such a smart, fun Cdn make comic content. I'd listen to you discuss ANY topic, but how about some classic Namor-Sue Storm. That relationship is insane. Another great silver character for you to cover is Gentleman Ghost. Check out his 1st appearance in Atom and Hawkman #43. A writer could make a great misogynist strawman it of him nowadays. Although I disagree with the secret identities take, I'll give him that the characters did became iconic for me.
I don't read a Deathstroke book since the new 52 but I think until today here in the confuse land of Brazil his name is just the translation of "Terminator", but everyone see "Exterminador" and understand "Slade"
The writers: "We changed the name to be a bit more child friendly." Also the writers: *Ends up creating one of most lethal, cold, brutal and child traumatic villians for a kid's show* This man played mind games with Robin, haunted him in death, manipulated him, Terra and Raven(sort of) to work with him.
Short but sweet video, love the hairdo in the style of Deathstroke's mask; and the glitter eye makeup is too cute! You are a doll, Sasha; with or without the glasses!
I always wondered why they called him Slade in the first place. I didn't know who Deathstroke was before TT, and then I was trying to remember his name and when I looked it up, he was called Deathstroke, and I was like, maybe I remembered his name wrong. And now watching this vid I just realized that he indeed has 2 names. Kids show are weird... I wish kids show went back to the 80's era, when you could have shows like HeMan, BraveStar, Silver Hawks, Thundercats, Optimus Prime dying like every other episode... Obviously not with the corny writting... That I don't miss. I still remember how my 8yo self yelled at the TV screen a huge "WHAT?" Because one of the Wonder Twins turned into a Ice Tractor. What I'm trying to say is yeah, More Deathstroke, Less sleeping with minors, beating up Hank Pim's wife and an slapping Robins.
I had a handful of the Deathstroke the Terminator comics run back in high school. I've always liked the character and his appearances in different mediums. He was my go to fighter in the first Injustice (sword combos for the win). I'd love to see one of your deep dives on the Slade Wilson/Wade Wilson thing. I know Deadpool was originally meant as a parody of the Deathstroke character, but I haven't looked into it much beyond that.
Because of teen titans, I usually think of Deathstroke as Slade first, and usually just call him that. Also helps to distinguish him from deadpool in my head.
I would love to see a video on Deathstroke vs. Deadpool! I think a subject like that would fall squarely in your wheelhouse. Plenty of salt to be had, potential for court proceedings (I can't remember, maybe you'll tell me!), and a great compare/contrast case study of DC and Marvel characters and their functions and interactions. Slade/Wade is and easy place to start, as well. Keep up the good work!
While he was definitely introduced as “Deathstroke the Terminator” in New Teen Titans #2, whenever he appeared in later New Teen Titans issues, I recall him being predominantly referred to as “Terminator” or “the Terminator”. Am I misremembering? I recall the comics moved away from “Terminator” and toward “Deathstroke” much later (years!) in a quasi-retcon-ish way, perhaps as a result of a cease and desist from whomever owns the rights to The Terminator movie franchise. I actually resisted calling him “Deathstroke” for a long time afterward. I always thought calling him “Slade” in the cartoon was to keep it kid-friendly. I like “Slade” more than “Deathstroke”, actually. It sounds menacing and similar to “slay”. The cartoon’s adaptation of the Judas Contract storyline was very well done, too.
The comics character debuted in 1980, and the film was in 1984, so DC's character was created and debuted long before the Cameron film. Popular belief is that DC just decided to drop "the Terminator" from his name because the film was so popular if you said "the Terminator" everyone thought you were talking about the film.
OK WHERE were YOU when My friends & I were collecting comics. Back when I was a kid (mostly the 70's) we had to actually hide the fact that we read and collected comics ( Reading is for sissys, and things made of paper are for lighting on fire and starting BIGGER things on fire!!!) Two of my favorite titles were Marvel Two in One (starring the Thing) and Marvel Team-up (Starring Spiderman) And let's not forget the Yearly event of every title, the Annual. One of my favorite comics of ALL times was actually a cross over with another Annual, Avengers. Those 2 titles chronicled an almost forgotten plan of Thanos: To synthesis an artificial amalgamation of all 6 Infinity Stones into one huge (green) and.. um...DO something with it after. (You see my expansive collection of over 10,000 comics was lost in an unfortunate storage space incident, a story worthy of being told in an Annual itself) So bear with me, because I am writing the details of those comics from memory. You see I BELIEVE the modern-day comics are our generation's answer to Mythology. So, in closing, embrace some of those One-off stories, those unused filler stories that couldn't be published during the scheduled year, and the variant cover art that sometimes made it into Annuals. And cover a few of those stories, I would suggest the Thanos Arc that was covered in a Giant sized Avengers annual, and either a Marvel Two-in-One or Marvel Team-up annual, partly because I haven't seen ANYONE else cover it, in this day and age of Ultra Thanos Fandom, come on the guy shows up in a Cosmic "wife-beater" and Armoured Yoga pants and beats the tar out of the Marvel universe. In one of these fights he takes on Thor, and The Hulk (I think) hand to hand, as he utters the Time-honored line "I SO abhor physical contacts" as he takes out Thor with his eye beams. If you could do that, you would make the Worlds biggest Second-grader SO happy!
Definitely a Deathstroke fan. At Six Flags, if you're required to wear a hat to do your job its allowed if you wear a souvenir hat sold at the park. I have several, but my first was Deathstroke. Based on the number of people who asked me where I got it I hope a few more sold.
You know on Spiderman the animated series (the best Spiderman) they had a dumb rule that he could never punch the villains because that's too violent. So he always wrestled with them or when yanked bricks on their heads. They are so creative with the actions in that show I never noticed he doesn't actually throw any punches until somebody pointed it out to me. Some of the villain throw a punch or two, like Allister Smyth punching Kingpin in his fat gut.
The only (?) time Spidey actually punches another character on that show is when the Chameleon impersonates Peter Parker. His powers are controlled by his belt so Spidey punches him in the belt to disrupt his powers. So you not only get Spidey actually punching someone, you have Spider-Man punching Peter Parker. Also on that show no one could use a handgun. That's why the cops all have laser guns.
Third Star Trek reference I have heard since I started watching Casually Comics... So worth it. Now I want to know what you feel about Discovery, and Picard.
Today I Found Out one of DC's famous villains was co-created by someone of Puerto Rican descent from the South Bronx (this video had me going on Wikipedia looking up George Perez.)
George Pérez is one of the greats. Super-nice guy, too. I was so thrilled to finally meet him at a convention a year ago. I felt like a little kid. Besides co-creating the New Teen Titans (Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, etc.), he‘s one of the all-time best comic book artists with seminal runs on Justice League of America and The Avengers, not to mention his amazing work on Crisis on Infinite Earths. He also revamped Wonder Woman, bringing her to prominence as one of DC’s top-tier heroes. His writing of Wonder Woman is still my favorite, decades later.
Haven't seen teen titans go, so I can't really comment on that. But to me Slade has always been a big bad, the master in the shadows. I mean he has mysterious goals and seems to be acting with autonomy. Deathstroke really feels and acts like an employee in a lot of things I've seen him in.(Which he often is, being an assassin.) He's just doing job and wants to get paid. I don't know, but it feels like Slade and deathstroke are very different despite being essentially the same character. It's like two different sides of the same person. Or maybe he changed his persona to after being an assassin so long and wanted to be in control.
Then why did they still call him Deathstroke in the lego games and Beware The Batman? And don’t tell me it’s due to a change in times when 1. Kid’s shows have become even MORE censored since then, and 2. They still call him Slade in Teen Titans Go
I like Slade better in the show, just because of how the characters say his name in the most dramatic way. I don't think Deathstroke would've worked in the same way.
Slade wilson death stroke wade wilson deadpool. Sports master (?!!!) Dead shot (!?!?) So dc probably has more masked mercenaries then marvel but maybe Im forgetting a few. Multiple robbins was almost as confusing as multiple jokers. You see because cannon isn't dogma in comics and media switch and the 42 worlds on the bell curve of the multi verse aren't the only ones that dc writes about. Throw Darksied shatterlings and the flashpoint somewhere in there and you got confusion. Im not sure if marvel makes many references to the multi verse but spiderman and the avengers don't usually end up in the same timeline as X men (although I think wolverine was a avenger in one media format) and death pool and essentially gwen stacy and that guy with the multiple personality disorder are reality warpers so they can move up and down the bell curve if they like. Black widow does it as well I think.
My favorite DC character. DC's evil-ish Captain America who was so badass that his big character change in Flashpoint was to be a pirate. That was the only way to make him cooler and darker. Didn't realize his voice was Ron Perlman. Makes a lot of sense.
I do buy the changing it for a censorship/kid friendly thing. If they had to work around Judas Contract for Terra, it wouldn’t be surprising. Side note: I highly doubt they could have done Jericho’s whole story either.
I liked Deathstroke: the Terminator. I liked Slade on the cartoon. I wasn't bothered by Deathstroke banging Terra because, well, he's a bad guy. And honestly, Terra seemed to want to f--- him, and she's scary. However, when Brad Melltzer turned him into Deathstroke: the Mary Sue in "Identity Crisis" I lost a lot of respect for both the character and the author.
I believe that’s also the reason why in the Justice League cartoon they had to refer to the Suicide Squad solely as Task Force X, their technical name.
Slade (his first name) being used as his villain name in the Teen Titans because his villain name, "Deathstroke", wasn't family friend... Instead of "Slade", they should have used "Familystroke", so it is family friendly, and there is no word "death" in the name.
Slade in Teen Titans was a significantly different character to Deathstroke in the comics but he's still great in his own way. Amazing villain for an amazing series. This version of the Teen Titans is the defining version for so many.

I can't speak to what he's become, but I really enjoyed Deathstroke when he first appeared. He was a serious dude in and out of costume, (the eye-patch) and an interesting character because not evil, just ruthless. So, not like the TT-Go character. (Though I enjoy both, (watching with my grands :D)
As always, for all your work & efforts, knowledge & observations, and many wonderful videos, thank you so very much.
Great vid! Although the series was sometimes vague, this Robin is definitely Dick Grayson. In the episode where his alternate universe version "Larry" came to visit he said his real name was "nosyarG kciD" aka Dick Grayson.
Would love for you to explore more of Deathstroke's family.
I feel like every adaptation of slade wilson was amazing. From comics, cartoon, to even the live action. It's all fucking amazing
Huge Deathstroke fan here. He's one of my top favorite DC characters of all time. I pretty much enjoy every incarnation of him, but I have to admit that I'm a bit behind on his New 52 younger body version.
Ron Perlman as Slade and the Lich were great villains equally menacing when they appeared. Also, was surprised he also voiced Mr. Lancer xD
His casting is right up there with Michael Ironsides as Darkseid or Clancy Ross as Lex Luthor, iconic.
@@Fifthmiracle Clancy Brown.
Lub from K-Dub
Although I disagree with the secret identities take, I'll give him that the characters did became iconic for me.
If we can't call him Deathstroke then there's no way we're going to call him Daddy.
No?
Just me then.
I'll get my coat
I don't read a Deathstroke book since the new 52 but I think until today here in the confuse land of Brazil his name is just the translation of "Terminator", but everyone see "Exterminador" and understand "Slade"
You should mention that there is a dramatic but running joke about how it is very cool saying the name "Slade" in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.
When theres trouble you know who to call
TEEN TITANS
Death stroke didn’t make it through the sensors yet somehow “Killer” moth, got through. Lol
The writers: "We changed the name to be a bit more child friendly."
Also the writers: *Ends up creating one of most lethal, cold, brutal and child traumatic villians for a kid's show*
This man played mind games with Robin, haunted him in death, manipulated him, Terra and Raven(sort of) to work with him.
Short but sweet video, love the hairdo in the style of Deathstroke's mask; and the glitter eye makeup is too cute! You are a doll, Sasha; with or without the glasses!
I wish Slade and his brother Wade would do a team up.....
Slade is a sick name and great as an alternative
“Who is Slade” one of the most iconic moments
I would love to see a video on Deathstroke vs. Deadpool! I think a subject like that would fall squarely in your wheelhouse. Plenty of salt to be had, potential for court proceedings (I can't remember, maybe you'll tell me!), and a great compare/contrast case study of DC and Marvel characters and their functions and interactions. Slade/Wade is and easy place to start, as well. Keep up the good work!
Who needs a moniker when your first name sounds intimidated enough.
When I was younger I misheard his name in the show. I thought it was *Slave* and I used to think it was the darkest name of all time!
You know, I swear I've seen him referred to as "Terminator" in at least one modern series or movie, but I just can't remember where.
I could swear I remember an early episode of Teen Titans where background text on a computer screen or something refers to him as Tim Drake.
If you could do that, you would make the Worlds biggest Second-grader SO happy!
yo, I never realised they used a different name, nice vid!
Me too, also always assumed Robin was Dick, never realized that was not canon.
Yea, that was never a question for me. Plus didnt they show him as nightwing? Like that should make it clear ya know?
Thank you for making a Death Stroke video without ever mentioning Deadpool eventhough he was strategically placed slightly off camera
Sasha, I see your Buffy omnibus behind you. Can you do a video on Buffy?
I honestly might name one of my kids “Slade.” It’s just so badass.
Sasha, you are great... Love the way you describe the issues in your videos... Looooove it! ❤️❤️❤️
Definitely a Deathstroke fan. At Six Flags, if you're required to wear a hat to do your job its allowed if you wear a souvenir hat sold at the park.
I have several, but my first was Deathstroke.
Based on the number of people who asked me where I got it I hope a few more sold.
The worst alteration was the Fantastic Four with no Human Torch because kids might try to catch themselves on fire.
For real, hearing the name slade is scarier
Neat, I don't know much about Deathstroke, other than his 1st appearance is pricey.
Sasha, you are the best. Thanks for talking about Teen Titans and Slade!
I just prefer “Slade” on principle from TT, and learned about “Deathstroke” and “Slade *Wilson*” through the DC Animated Movieverse with MA BOI DAMIAN
"Trapped on an island...with the viewers."
🤭
I still love during Trigon Arc when the mask is knocked off and shows the skeleton.
It was so amazing when he came back to life. I didn't expect that season of teen titans to get so dark *.*
Great video!!
I love Deathstrokes old outfit mainly because of those stupid boots, they look like he stole them from some fashion blind pirate.
To me Desthstroke and “Slade” from animated titans seem like two different people all together.
I did find it strange that he has this whole mysterious identity thing, despite using his first name.
Fun trivia, in the french dub he keep his name of Deathstroke
Originally he was going to be called Murdermassage, but it was a bit much.
Slade - certainly not named to remind all the British (screaming in unison):
IT'S CHRISTMAS!!
Not so scary a name in the UK. lol
I was hoping she would explain why they never knew who Slade was when he literally gave them his first name.
The secret identity thing is actually my least favorite thing (or lack there of) about the show.
I believe that’s also the reason why in the Justice League cartoon they had to refer to the Suicide Squad solely as Task Force X, their technical name.
"Who is Slade?!"'-Robin
Like it just sounds mysterious and menancing.
that was a fun video! great
Slade (his first name) being used as his villain name in the Teen Titans because his villain name, "Deathstroke", wasn't family friend...
Instead of "Slade", they should have used "Familystroke", so it is family friendly, and there is no word "death" in the name.
Never been this early, but great video thank you 😊
You should do a whole episode just on the original Teen Titans cartoon and how it adapted iconic Titans comic stories/characters!!!
4:48 Oooh I felt that.
Deathstroke is my favorite character ever
