I just want to say that thanks to you, Pack, 220 average bowler and all your bowler friends, I've decided to pick up bowling again after over 30 years away! Keep making the videos and teaching me the fun part of bowling again. Thank you Darren! I look forward to watching you win a PBA title soon!!!
Not trying to troll but having a video about beginner balls then talking about friction points and intermediate to advanced concepts is asking for too much for a new beginner. Been bowling for over 40 years, 40 years ago I could count on mid 180's to high 180's average but about 20 years ago went to newer style bowling ball with aggressive coverstock and immediately added 20 pins to my average. Just discovered your channel and really enjoying it.
A lot of bowlers are very aggressive in their style, me included. I have a high rev rate so these types of balls are good for when the lanes are dry. Allows me to keep my angles more closed for longer. I could buy expensive pearls and get the length I need but why do that when I can get the same results out of a cheaper ball. Bowling is skill based. There's no reason to buy expensive equipment
I've just started league with my hubby amd son and i maybe bowled 30 times in my life. Once we started league i realkzed there was so much to bowling and i have a lot to learn. Just got my first ball and now i need lessons thank you fir all you do
If you feel like your ball doesn't hook enough, roll it slower (believe it or not, it works for house balls too). I threw my solid reactive on heavy oil today and couldn't get it to hook because I realized I was throwing it too fast, hard, and wasn't using the outer parts of the lane (16 lbs ball too). So I slowed down, focused more, concentrated on accuracy and consistency, and it hooked. (I detox my ball 4 games before this specific session and didn't resurface my ball so I'm gonna go do that)
I got was averaging around 120 with house balls, I bought the tropical surge and automatically started going 150 and above so it’s a great ball to start with.
I love my Tropical Surge (the red one) and want the purple/gold Surge for this fall. I have really soft ball speed and will try getting that Electrify for my bag as well. This fall is my golden anniversary year of league bowling (50 years, where did the time go??) 👀 Thanks for showing all levels of equipment, Darren!
Great info DTang… what’s interesting to me is that these entry level balls seem to have a place in league situations when urethane is not used. But the big sellers are the balls with more core, stronger covers…
I only began with house balls, and then I purchased a Zen Soul and ice spare ball to begin with. Now, later on, I've gained further knowledge of the sport, I've now got a Gem, Pitch Black, Phaze II, Rubicon UC3, RSTX-3, FATE, Zen U and to finish it off Exotic Gem. Darren's knowledge made me the bowler I am today, I'd love to see a video of him explaining launch angles and get his opinion on his strategy.
Every morning I get up and make a double espresso and then listen to a Darren Tang video to stimulate my bowels so I can have a really good bowel movement.
I’m a 64-year-old veteran who just picked up a bowling ball for the first time in 40 years. Love your videos very informative. I bought the hammer raw for my first ball about a month and a half ago and it’s not too bad for a beginners ball. I just purchased today and have not had a chance to use it yet, but I bought the phase II . Can’t wait to use it. I’m not that good but I sure have a lot of fun. I know this video is a year old, but it sure helps a lot.
I have the tropical surge and have it drilled 2 handed it hooks a ton even lane is oiled in the middle and dry on the sides but could be factor they are wood lanes
I just dropped mine at the pro shop to drill it 2 handed. I been shooting it with my thumb in layout and had to rotate it a ton!!! Glad I saw your comment cause I was skeptical on getting it drilled properly and if I was wasting time and money
To me, the Roto Grip Gustle line is one of the most underrated ball lines. Even a ton of more advanced bowlers use these. I find they are great for later in league play, when the lanes have broken down, or for shorter patterns. I have a Hustle Ink and Hustle Wine. Thinking about adding a hybrid.
Sometimes I feel like Darren has so much knowledge about bowling that it can sometimes be his worst enemy. He will overthink and over complicate the situation that he is in, when in competition, that it just ends up hurting him. 😢 watching him explain the low end balls to new bowlers in this video was a little painful to say the least 😅 but it’s all good. We all know he means well and Darren’s is a great guy so keep up the good work! 😊
I bought a ball back in 2010, didn’t know what I was doing, they put tip plugs in and I got a bit… thicker, I can throw is two hand but it bothered me that I didn’t use it like what I saw as a throw… didn’t know two handed was a thing. Since breaking my wrist half a dozen times I have confided in two hand.
Fuzion#1938 I am a new bowler (and now in my first league wish me luck lol) and seeing your videos from ball reviews to literal tips and tricks helped me alot, the league videos are entertaining and the pba tour videos were suspenseful and joyful, this channel was so good and im so glad that i saw this channel and discovered it in the first place.
Would it be a bad idea for a beginner bowler to get a purple hammer? I am a very casual beginner who got interested after the purple hammer controversy, and I just want to see how it feels to throw it. Would that be detrimental for me long-term?
I have mostly strong balls and lately I got a few weaker ones and one of them is that green and black tropical surge and I was amazed at how well it rolled on a fresh house shot. I couldn't miss the pocket rolling over 4th arrow. I was amazed I also have a strong drilling..... I went back up to the counter and I asked the guy behind it. Are you sure this is a fresh house shot? He said yes. No one's rolled on it and leak ended so there's no league on Saturdays
From someone who went from a motiv thrill to a black widow it's a crazy difference I was throwing one handed but now I throw 2 handed and I can't even throw my black widow cause I average 500 revs but only can throw like 17 18 mph so idk I can throw black widow I just have to be a lot left and throw into the oil and throw faster than normal
my BSY is getting drilled this week. Looking forward to learning how to hook. Thanks for the in depth explanation about the differences between the 2 entry level balls.
I love the Tropical Surge Emerald, the best ball of the surges. Bowl outside of Columbus on basically wood lanes. My high end bowling balls stay in my bag and look like new. Holiday Lanes is to far for me to bowl there.
IAM injured right now with a finger and eye surgery. And can’t bowl, but I enjoy watching your videos to help me get better sitting on the couch. In my Arnold Schwarzenegger voice ‘I’ll be back’
I got a Raw Hammer as my first ball. TNT was my second got it a few months ago. I’m gonna get a Radical Innovator Solid soon and drill it strong for tournaments. I’ve currently bowling in my second ever league.
I’ve been watching your videos since I started bowling Spring 2022 and I’ve improved so much since then because of your tips. I’m not saying this to have better chances of winning but to just show you how much I appreciate you and your tips. I hope to get good enough to play against you.
Wish I had seen this before I bough my Tropical surge. I like my ball but already see it’s too weak for what I need. I carry a 180 bag with my Surge but I think I can do better. It just doesn’t plow through the pocket unless I’m on almost the exact board I play. If I kiss it by one board it’s high or low. I’m ready for another ball but I really have no idea where to go from where I am ball wise.
Hi - I’m in a Junior Bowling League and this is my 2nd year of bowling. Currently I have the TROPICAL SURGE. I throw a 13 lb ball and the speed is about 13 mph. The lanes are light so oily. My question is if you think that THE ROAD is a good ball for me as an upgrade from what I have? Many thanks in advance for your advice and assistance
I’ve been bowling for about 2 years now with a house ball had a storm can’t remember exact model it was free giving to me by friend but I broke it and have been playing with a house ball for a while my highest is a 275 with a house ball wanna take my game to the next level I hook very well I’m a two finger bowler just curious what your thought on. A ball for me would be
Is storm nova a good ball for beginner b/c I have been using that ball for over a year and I am ready to move on to a better ball- does anyone have any recommendations on which ball I should choose next?
Im looking for help picking a ball. I bowl 1 handed 2 fingers and just started bowling 2 times a week for about 3 months using house balls. Im looking to get a ball. I have done research and figured HAMMER ARTIC OR BLACK WIDOW 3 OR VENOM SHOCK...What would you all suggest?
Got a question I'm getting into bowling because it's satisfying getting strikes but I was wondering I see sneak peeks of an app you use I was wondering what that app is, it's where your selecting pins or something

There is a ball that Elite made, it's a green urethane ball with a white skull on one side, I bet you can't find one. My dad got it thrown in with a different ball. Wish I could find another, it is the best ball over ever used.
My first ball, surprise tropical surge. I got a hustle just take a step up, and then one of league mates gave me an iQ tour pearl. I cannot for the life of me find a comparison of these three.
Superman#8056 Was wondering as someone who bowls completly straight (no reaction, no spin, no tips or fancy shit needed, 3 holes with thumb) with 170 average what your thoughts are on the Brunswick White dot 300? I was thinking about upgrading from a 12lbs to a 14lbs since I'm missing sleepers due to deflection on dead on shots and over 200 consistently when i hit the spares, also hitting the pocket and leaving 1 up, I have the curse of the 9's right now, currently throwing 20-23mph with a 12lbs, I picked up a house 14 the other night and striked out 6 frames with more control. I really don't know what ball to buy since I don't bowl like everyone else so was wondering if you could offer some direction or if my choice is a good one thanks. :D
I've been using a Zen for 2 years, and I just got a Summit. Love them both, and you're the pro, but I'd recommend the Zen to anyone, because Zen ball good! That Summit though... it's had a good effect on my game. Are they "entry-level"? I dunno, but I like them!
Arnie#2813 “Arnie#2813” I play the same line as in 1:59 and use a Hustle Camo (1 handed but 2 fingers style) Sometimes it hooks and sometimes it doesn’t depending on the line it takes.
OG_007 its been 20 years.. this was video i was looking for....i use to throw a DangerZone Black ice. back to the lanes. "good sht Tang keep them vids coming"
Rhinos aren't really balls meant for a bigger hook but try throwing slower by standing more up because leg speed = ball speed or change the surface with a pad if you have one
Rift#2047 I've just started bowling with a 3rd hand roto grip halo vision. Previous owner bowled two handed and i havent got the chance to replug and redrill it yet. not really liking 2 handed. Been watching your videos! Eager to venture more into this new found hobby of mine.
Longhitterz#1228. Love the videos, what would you recommend as the best thing to do if a person wanted to start bowling on sport patterns? Is it just trying to find a sport league or you need to find tournaments to enter in?
Breaks my heart, but I disagree with Darren on this. The majority of "beginner" bowlers are going to be speed dominant (more ball speed than RPMs). Put any of these balls in their hands and it'll skid on them on the fresh and they won't be controllable when things break down. Someone who is just starting out should probably get an asymmetrical solid or an asymmetrical pearl ball. If I were a PSO I'd be pushing something like the Black Widow 2.0 (not the new hybrid one, NO beginner should even TOUCH a hybrid ball) on nearly every "beginner" bowler.
OMG A PACIFIST#2036 =] because why not lol , Keep up the content bro. your videos have made me wanna start bowling again even though im like below average BUT i still have fun hahah
Thanks for the video! As a new bowler I've been working with pre-owned balls I'm working to have redrilled to try different coverstocks, and just got a Obession Tour through BW mystery ball! Side question, how do you approach going to your LPS for drilling?? evil#4883
enzee#7156 Fairly new to bowling and have really been enjoying it. I have joined a league and still use house balls. Haven’t been able to try a nicer one to see if it would improve my game or not. Would really like to try the one you showed in the video.
No it didn't help me at all lol. As a I guess semi accomplished league bowler over a long career I fully understood what you were trying to say but when even you were confused as to the reason it was matching up better it really started to confuse me. Lol
I just want to say that thanks to you, Pack, 220 average bowler and all your bowler friends, I've decided to pick up bowling again after over 30 years away! Keep making the videos and teaching me the fun part of bowling again. Thank you Darren! I look forward to watching you win a PBA title soon!!!

been bowling for 1 month now and I love. honestly I am good with a house ball but would love to use a reactive ball .

Fairly new to bowling and have really been enjoying it. I have joined a league and still use house balls. Haven’t been able to try a nicer one to see if it would improve my game or not. Would really like to try the one you showed in the video.

I could definitely use a new light oil ball! My Hustle 3TP is well used. And as usual, great work to you and Jesse on the video!

Keep up the good work Darren! You're one of the reasons why I love bowling so much and may all your throws hit the pocket! Much love.
No it didn't help me at all lol. As a I guess semi accomplished league bowler over a long career I fully understood what you were trying to say but when even you were confused as to the reason it was matching up better it really started to confuse me. Lol
