Mine, too. One of my family's four cats had his little incident, but was considerate enough to head outside to do his business. He puked twice, both times in small amounts. The first was a puddle about the size of a 50 cent piece and was covered in white foam. The second was a string of food that he mostly slurped up.
They ALWAYS run to throw up on the carpet..... If they are not on a carpet/rug, they will run for it to throw up on it... All of my cats have done this!
Exactly ! Mine has to find carpet to puke on. I always ask him, Why can't you do this on the kitchen floor so I can just wipe it up ?? Never fails!!!! But I love him anyway !!! ha ha !!
I swear my cat was brillant in her location to throw up. She always goes for the shower rug in the bathroom. Yet whenever the rug comes out of the dryer, she loves rubbing herself all over it and sleeping there at night. Now after about a week or two she'll throw up on it again. I swear she only does it to make me wash where she sleeps. Like she's saying, "Hey it's dirty. What you don't believe me? *barf*"
I had an older cat who would throw up like bile. Took him to the vet and they suggested bloodwork and it turned out he had hyperthyroidism. He lived for about another two years before he got bone cancer at 17 years old. He was my first ever black cat and he was the most amazing one too.
I found out that my Lucy is very sensitive to grain, even a little bit. I bought very high quality foods containing very little grain, thinking it was not a big deal, and she either puked or had irregular bowel movements. When I made the switch to grain free her symptoms stopped right away. Monitoring your cat's reaction to food is so imortant!
Yes it is! I came home one night to find two screaming starving TWO week old kittens in my yard. Have no idea how they got through the fence, they could barely walk. Got them formula, etc. and when they started eating sold food, one of them had bloody diarrhea. I had given them one of the popular ones that is "fancy" lol.........and I had named her Lucy, your comment caught my attention because of the name lol Anyway, the vet put her on mild food and it cleared up. Tried the fancy one again because we weren't sure if it was the food or parasites or stress, and it came back so she is now on a better quality food and she is fine, she and her sister are having a ball! It was the food. The vet did not like the fancy one much.
Laminated flooring, waterproof wood flooring (my neighbor was putting some in a couple of months ago and they only have kids not puking cats) or even just manufactured wood.
Mine are strategists, suspected engineers. Proof is the fact they know exactly where my first step out of bed will be, THATS where the first puke of the day lands.
Better than IN your bed, like my cat does. LOL. But yeah, I feel ya. *NO* place is a good place for cat puke. Like on the bathroom rug in the middle of the night.
@@Linda7647 Yes. Bathroom rug. Right in front of the refrigerator, on an electrical cord, ON THE OTHER CATS FAVORITE TOY!!! I woke up just in time 3 days ago when Moxie decided my pillow was a good spot. Well, im not sure the pillow was his target, it could have been my hair he was aiming at. Ever have a cat toss one into their water bowl? Yeah, thats a great one.
@@marylamb7707 Never had them toss up in their water bowl before. But at least I'd be able to dump it out, lol. Puke & toss, haha. And yep, I've dealt with the puke on electrical cords and pillows. Grr!
My cat vomited because of spoiled food. Every day after she eated her wet food I left her food dish with the leftovers for later in the night. It turned out that wet food goes bad in around 4 to 5 hours especially the good quality food with high meat percentage. After she got worse I went to the vet and she explained that to me. My cat hasn't barfed ever since.
Yeah, that stuff doesn’t keep. Annoyingly, cats don’t have a strong sense of taste, so if you refrigerate the leftovers in the can, you have to let them warm up to release enough scent to make them appetizing.
Poor kitty! I'm glad you found out what you were doing. 💜 Ya, you need to think.. We as humans can't even keep our can meats out after they've been opened. They need to be frigerated. I just put my kitties leftover portion in fridge.. Not with can, that needs to thrown away. Later I just give my kitty the food! They don't care if it's warmed up or not.😸
wow i think this might be exactly what’s going on with my cat right now. we took her to the vet but they couldn’t find anything wrong. thank you for this comment! going to take her food away after a couple hours and see what happens
@Mel Barrett Yeah that might too. Thankfully when we got her, the vet told me to put the dry food in a sealable container and I don't buy more than what we need for a month or less.
Hey Jackson, I just watched this video. My calico passed a year ago from advanced renal failure at approximately age 14. I learned a lot from that heartbreaking experience. She threw up probably a few times a month when she was younger. I didn't have a lot of money and skipped regular vet visits. I ended up moving and I noticed she was throwing up almost daily. I finally took her to a vet at my new home. They tested her kidney function and she was at late stage 3/early stage 4. They had me change her food. I'm still embarrassed and upset she was so sick and I didn't realize it because her throwing up changed slowly over time. Anyway, I guess on the one hand, her diet change got me 6 great months with my cat. She stopped throwing up as much and seemed more energetic. She passed quickly at the end. She stopped pooping and they gave her an enema. She had advanced in the disease and they told me it wouldn't be long. I still had about 12 good days with her at that point before she stopped using the battery and eating. But just want to share regular throwing up could be renal failure. I ❤️ you kitty and miss you.
I sadly had a very similar experience. Also renal failure and my cat was also dehydrated. I felt horrible and my vet was very gracious about it. He took amazing care of her for a couple of days and then sent her home on a rx diet, I think it was one by Royal Canin, and she actually lived several more years. Now I'm very sensitive to vomiting and took my 9 year old cat to the vet recently and requested bloodwork that they didn't think was necessary. She's in great health but they suggested maybe I try a sensitive stomach diet and/or probiotics. So far the Purina One sensitive stomach and skin food seems to be working. 1 week and no vomiting!
Over 50 years of cat parenting and NOW I learn about this? I’ve been asking the vets for 40 years and NOW I get the answer? I love “Cat Daddy” because he discusses everyday problems with being a cat’s human! Thank you Mr. Galaxy!
One of our cats had an episode where she was just puking continuously every few minutes. Took her to the vet (thinking she'd been poisoned) but they couldn't identify the reason. They gave her anti-nausea medication and sent her home. A couple days later, she was back to hacking and puking, and I noticed something sticking out of her nose. I pulled it out... it was a 5" stalk of grass. It must've been stuck in the back of her throat, causing her to gag for days. Poor kitty.
@@Kanggaxx it’s possible the grass wasn’t visible and only became visible after the cat was hacking more. I’m sure no vet just simply missed a stalk of grass sticking out of a cat’s nose 🙄
@@Kanggaxx The vet did suggest that she could have something stuck in her esophagus, but there was no way to tell without an xray, and since she initially responded well to the anti-nausea medication we agreed to wait and see. She's the type of cat who is very distressed by vets and medical procedures, so putting her through lots of tests wasn't anyone's preferred option. They gave her a full blood screen and were satisfied that she hadn't been poisoned (which was the main concern).
I read somewhere on line that some cats may throw up (bile/liquid) if their stomachs get too empty. I think I have one of those. Love your videos! I'm so happy that kitties have such a good friend!
Yes! My kitty will get an upset stomach if he goes too long without food. We've been having a "battle" recently- he needs to lose weight, so I cut his carbs. Unfortunately, he's a kibble addict, so the high protein wet food was a bust. It's too expensive for me to keep trying different textures/flavors because he turns his nose up at it, and the whole can goes to waste. So the next best thing is high protein/ low carb dry food, and he hates it! He will go on hunger strikes for days, and that's when the vomiting happens. His poor little tummy just gets so empty! 😭 So I tried mixing his favorite kibble with the high protein stuff, about a 50/50 mix. He tries to pick around it, but I know he's at least getting a little of the healthy food. My cat is such a stubborn little dude...
One of mine is a snarf and barf, and she also turned out to be allergic to the dry food. We changed it and she stopped barfing. We are getting her slow feeding dish. Stay safe and sane everyone ❤️
Dandruff can also be caused by allergies as well as other symptoms already mentioned. I am not vet but I know my diabetic cat had it real bad until she was on insulin and it went away.
Kuchi Kopi my cats are my babies and very spoiled and very well looked looked after, it is funny that the food she was throwing up was the super healthy food that we changed to. So we ending up going a different route and got her a non vet shop dry food, and she has been doing great since. We are still getting her a slow feeder bowl to stop her doing the snarf bit, which she has been doing for day dot even when she was the single cat in the house. Thank you 😻😸
My cat was over grooming, throwing up hair balls once a day, and itching under his chin and around his eyes so much he developed bald spots. At first a thought it was anxiety because we just adopted him and he has had a traumatic life, but we learned from the vet it is food allergies. He also had sores on his lips. For some reason food allergies didn’t occur to me! I think we tend to assume that cats can handle any type of meat but that clearly isn’t the case. Thank you Jackson for talking about this issue.
I'm allergic to wheat (pollen and in food) as well as lactose intolerant but I'm ok with goats milk if the goats haven't eaten any type of wheat (took time to figure out...) I used to feed strays outside with cheapish cat food time to socialise them then find them a home. One we never found a home for and when we moved we kept her. She lives in the "garage" mostly because she can't handle visitors so she comes in the house when it's just us. I noticed that I couldn't go near her due to allergies... And her poop was too sloppy. Turns out I am allergic to cat pellies containing wheat and she just doesn't digest wheat! She also lost weight, she seemed to be doing water retention... She's 8 now and we're both doing much better!
I had one cat who had this and changing his food to different proteins helped. I think it was changing him to a source of protein that he never had before like venison or duck. I hadn’t suspected food because I hadn’t changed his food but apparently this can emerge after a time. My current cat overgrooms after flea bite. I’ve never seen a flea on him or anywhere, but must’ve gotten bit maybe I was a few days late in applying his medication or it wore off earlier than I expected (it’s supposed to last a month and I do them every 4 weeks). Apparently some cats don’t just get itchy for a flea bite but develop an allergic reaction and overreact for a longer time. When I took him to the vet, he pointed out two cats in the waiting room with the same issue. I now apply his to flea medication every three weeks.
Speaking of asthma, a video on kitty asthma would be great! The symptoms look like vomiting so it can really trick humans into thinking the cat is a puker. The sad little gasping weeze and stretched out neck, the hilarity of getting a cat to accept an inhaler, and how to figure out the causes of attacks would be helpful.
Agreed. Our girl kitty occasionally has spells of wheezing in the hunched over, outstretched neck posture described - like she's trying to hack up the MOAH (mother of all hairballs) but nothing comes out, and the vet could find no answer. I later developed severe asthma and often have attacks of coughing and wheezing that can sound much like our cat's wheezing fits. So we both have asthma (although kitty's is mild), from different causes, and share some triggers. She doesn't need inhalers since her spells usually resolve quickly. But on a couple of really bad asthma days, we shared a few breaths of nebulizer mist when we both had wheezing attacks hit at the same time.😷🙀
We had a cat that had asthma and you are absolutely correct about it looking like they are throwing up when they are having an attack. Good news is, with an inhaler (daily and emergency), he lived a happy life. He didn’t mind the inhaler once he got used to it; I think he realized it made him feel better.
@@abbynormal4740 Since you AND your cat is coughing and wheezing, a word of advice from someone who learned the hard way.....have your home checked for any sources of black mold. Both I and my two cats got very sick in our previous home from undetected black mold in the basement. Now that we've been out of it for a few years, and received medical care for the effects, we are recovering and the asthma has gone into remission. People (or pets) who are not allergic to mold won't mind it, but a sensitive person will react.
Great video Jackson!!! I was a vet tech for a long time and have been in cat rescue for a long time and everything you said and how you said it was right on point!!! Even the "I dont wanna see any comments about your cat being ok with milk and so was my grandma cat...." etc. was soooo perfect. Lol. And then at the end when you said "dont comment that your cat has vomited for 4 days....what do I do? ARGH!" The cat world is soooo lucky to have you and your true cat knowledge that you share. Thank you. I watched this video because I have 10 cats and feel my world consists of cat vomit!!! Ugh! Your imitations were hilariously perfect!
But I have a question if you don't mind. I don't give my cats or kittens milk at all except for cat milk from the store for little kittens and then I weed them off. But my question is that I have a son that is lactose intolerant and I buy lactose free butter and milk to help my son. Can I use lactose free milk as a treat for one of my cats or kittens or is it still not okay?
While I was pregnant, my cat was snoozing on a chair....the dog walked by and she threw up ON THE DOG. I was already so queasy, I nearly called my husband and told him to come home from work. And I’m a vet tech, so a little barf is generally NBD.
That happened to one of my cats too. She swallowed a bunch of hair and basically had a hairball stuck in her bowels. She needed surgery to get it out so she could start eating again. 😿
@@kaitlynwickham6237 Same thing can happen with too big a piece of plastic and other such materials. Long items are the most dangerous since they can actually bind the intestines and kill your cat with out surgery.
It can be because there's no room (as in, they're obstructed), but cats also have an odd reflex where constipation can trigger vomiting directly. There's a nerve connection that causes it. Helpful Vancouver Vet talked about it in a video at one point.
My four year old Marcie was throwing up little piles of clear liquid for a day or so before I noticed. By the time I realized something was very wrong it was too late. She had pancreatitis which caused her to stop eating for a few days. The not eating caused liver failure and she was gone in a week. I’m still messed up about it and that was in October. Please pay attention to your babies behavior. Especially when you have multiple cats like us. We just didn’t notice in time.
Our (late) cat had the same wheezing/Asthma sound that he mentioned, but we found out a few weeks later that she had cancer on her lungs/kidneys. So FYI...if you think your cat has Asthma, best to get an x-ray to find out for sure.
Wheezing and abnormal breathing is always a reason to call a vet! Cats are great at hiding illness, so if you notice something change, take notes. I'm so sorry about your cat, Steve. Sounds like she lived a happy life up until then ❤️
Thanks for this comment Steve Our new rescue who we have no background on has recently started wheezing or coughing. The vet said asthma in cats in Australia is rare and its probably allergies. We did have the option of an xray so after hearing your story we will go back and get one. So sorry about the loss of your fur friend ❤
Yes! People kept saying that my cat was having a hairball but I took a video and showed it to the vet and she confirmed it was actually an asthma attack. She turns out to have serious breathing problems.
A vet tech and I had to talk about this yesterday and hopefully we can figure out his problem and address asap! So I agree with you, it doesn't hurt to ask the vet or vet tech, or vet nurse if you're cat or dog should be seen. I also am a very protective pet mom when it comes to my pets being sick. Believe me I've been working on not panicking everytime my animals sneeze! Lol....but vet techs are good for triage. Thanks to our phones having cameras...I was able to show the tech the problem, it was Sunday. It never hurts to ask a professional...😊
Hey Jackson! Thanks so much for making this video because now we know our big fluffy kitty just needed slower feeding and more brushing. He’s doing so much better thanks to your tips!
We got a ceramic slow feeder bowl and the cat knocked it off the counter. Three of them from various spots so he had to really work to make it happen. Lol. He still has another ceramic. it’s a raised bowl this time ion the top step of the basement yet he’s never once knocked it off. He still pukes every time he eats though
Hi Jackson, thanks for this. I have just adopted the sweetest 10yr old silver tabby Brit shorthair from an abusive home, I don't know a lot of her history but she is definitely a snarf & barf cat, simply because she was often starved before. We have been to the vet, she is healthy but just needs to gain weight nice and slowly (she was approx 2kg when she came to me). Thanks, love to all and stay safe! xx
Mine occasionally does too. There are lots of affordable slow feeder bowls available. Her's has an extruded fish pattern that the food suits in for her to work it out. This helps them take longer and doubles as a little mental puzzle.
Also when it comes to hairballs there are a lot of good foods and treats that are anti hairball, and they work pretty well. Definitely something to consider if your cat gets hairballs.
Need this! I knew someone's dog that was not getting regular dental care and it was a really bad time and led to serious medical problems. I don't want to risk it with my bebe
Great video, thank you! My boy had a cough, it sounded exactly like how you did it! The vet first thought about asthma, but we changed our vet and they put our cat on antibiotics and told us to lose the hood from the litter box and change to dustfree litter. Thankfully it helped a lot! He still coughs a bit but only like once every 2-3 weeks. BTW people should know that coughing can also mean there's something wrong with the cat's heart and coughing should ALWAYS be thoroughly investigated!
The same thing happened with my cat, Jealo! Doctor couldn't find the cause, so I tried the new litter and removed the "door" of the litter box, and Jealo never coughed again. He does have though CKD, but that's a different story.. Greetings!
Hi Jackson, will you please make a video about the loss of a cat/supporting a cat at the end of their life? I know it would be a hard topic, but I think it would be really helpful for so many people 💕
The only time I really panicked with my yarfers was when Rogue threw up red tinged barf. I took her to the emergency vet thinking she was bleeding internally. It turned out to be an irritated esophagus and she had to take a tiny dose of Prilosec for a few days. (Like human, like cat, lol) So there probably should be a subcategory about colors in puke...
I'm so glad I just saw ur comment! My cat who's 5 & has never thrown up bfr started vomiting yest & hasn't stopped. All vets r closed till mon. I looked up those ask vet online & Notice To Everyone! They r not free even if say so. Scam ya at the end! Anyway, concerned cuz my boys vomit was like a deep maroon color. My 1st thot was blood too, so glad to c it doesn't necessarily mean it is. Thx, happy new year!
Our cat would hack up clear and liquidy every morning around 4am. It turns out that he is sensitive to having an empty stomache. The solution was to feed him right before bed and leave it out for snacking. But the cat would only eat at night if the food was upstairs near his people. Thanks to our vet and some careful observation we now have a happier cat.
So nice to hear reasons instead of "Take her to the vet!" Spoken by vets for vets...We don't have enough vets around here and it takes forever to get in....
Extremely helpful and informative, thank you, Jackson. My cat Ted has had a few separate incidents if frequent vomiting that despite tests, the vet hasn't been able to diagnose. It's so helpful to have a guide as to what is normal for him and what is not >•
If cats eat mice and rats in the wild, why don't pet food companies make mice or rat cat food? Mice and rats breed fast so you have a large supply to make food with. It seems like a no brainer to me.
@@firewilson920 .....but mice and rats are food for them just like chicken canned food is. Just like they don't play with the canned chicken canned food, they would not play with a rat or mice canned food.
Don't forget moths, dragonflies, earthworms... Our cats loved going out in the yard at night and snacking on moths. One of them liked dragonflies - except the wings, he'd leave those. And, yes, one ate an earthworm my dad found when he was planting flowers 😁😁.
I tried to "comment " in the aggression portion. I have a now almost 4 yr old ragdoll who I absolutely 💯 % ADORE & LOVE. When she was 5 months old - a kitten, her owner died & her owner's sister took her in to keep until she could select an appropriate loving new owner, HOWEVER, she already had 4 other dogs & 3 or 4 other cats & Willow ( ragdoll kitten) had been an only pet. Willow was severely traumatized. I was thankfully chosen to be her new owner. When I got her she was just turning one year & I only had to pay to spay her - SUCH A BLESSING! Ragdolls are expensive cats....... Now, after having her for 3 years, she still has a couple bad habits from that trauma that I don't know how to deal with. She has bonded with me wonderfully & I probably love her too much if anything, but she is my "baby" - when she has 'had enough' of something & I don't see it coming or pick up on it, will take a swipe at me. I know she feels remorse because of the way she acts after I say "OUCH! WILLOW!! BAD GIRL!!" - She will come up close to me & look me in the face squawk talking as if to say, "I'm sorry, please forgive me"- kind of funny but too fresh to not try to do something about... Any suggestions as to what I should do or how I should respond?
I'm glad to hear up to 3 times a month is normal. I've been trying to figure out why my one cat kept throwing up maybe a bit more than 3 times a month, more like once or twice per week. I started paying close attention to what she ate each day she threw up and it seemed that most of the time it was after she ate something with tuna! I cut out tuna and the vomiting has been greatly reduced. Still going to talk to the vet of course but I'm pretty convinced that was the problem!
We had a cat that always ate a bunch of dry food and then drink a lot of water and then barfed. I learned to take the water bowl away when she was just vacuuming up her dry food. I would give her a very small amount of water in her bowl about 15 minutes after she was done vacuuming. That mostly took care of her snarf and barf.
Love you Jackson!!! Great information all the time!!!! I rescued a feral kitten years ago (my first cat ever) and he is the funniest, cutest, spunkiest guy in the whole world, not to mention a “Mojito Kitty”. He’s now 8-1/2 years old and I can’t even imagine my life without him!!! He’s definitely “The Man”. 💕
I think it's great that you use common language like you use with the cat throwing up instead of a bunch of fancy words you explained it very well I appreciate
A couple of years ago, my longhaired black cat started puking almost every 20 minutes, for several days. EVEN MORE days of labs and late night vet costs later, we learned he was dealing with Pancreatitis and infections in his stomach and gallbladder. He's 6 and doing fantastic now.
Jackson, my cat was throwing up a lot. Mostly bile and sometimes food. It went on for awhile. I finally took him to my Vet. We had to do blood work ( yes it was expensive ) but results came back and he was good. No disease. I was so happy. The vet has told me to change his meals and so I am trying this. He is not happy but I will do anything to help him. This was very informative, thank you.
With my long haired cat, the hair balls and barf are much less awful than when she gets a turd stuck in her fur and decides to try and dislodge it by dragging her ass all around my carpeted apartment. I’m surprised she still does it since it always ends with an angry human putting on a rubber glove and hanging her butt under the faucet... and then the hated carpet cleaner running for an hour.
@@evilsharkey8954 How else do expect the turd to get off her? She doesn't have hands and fingers! I can't believe you get mad. You should have got a short haired cat or better yet no cat at all!
Heather Franklin, she can pull it off with her teeth or try to shake it off. That’s what she used to do before she discovered the ass crayon technique. Whether I’m angry about having a streak of shit across my carpet or not, ass dragging means the turd is all smushed up into her fur, requiring water to remove, an experience neither of us likes. I trim her fur in the back to prevent that problem, but it grows back pretty quickly. Creepily, she enjoys having her nether regions trimmed with scissors, though I have to be really careful. It’s really easy to accidentally nip a cat’s skin with scissors.
My cat has asthma. You did a very good job describing it. He is on meds twice daily. Usually he does very well but if I don't clean often enough, the dust and such gets to him (and me, frankly). If you are a smoker like me and you have cats, try your hardest to go outside every time. Cig smoke is so hard on them.
My indoor kitty has been sick twice today.. for the first time ever... bile and foam, but there was nothing else in it.... she didn't eat any breakfast. I hope she feels better tomorrow. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
My previous fuzzy baby was tiny. He was never even 9 pounds and probably should have been at least 10-11 but was so skinny I could feel his bones, and he threw up 3-5 times a WEEK! I took him to the vet since he was 2 years old for this and we tried several things, limited ingredient food, different feeding methods, allergy medications, etc. It wasn't until he was 14 and I was taking him to a cardiologist for his heart condition and he was getting chest x-rays every 3 months that we finally found out why he why throwing up so often and was so skinny. In one x-ray there was a mass near his lower lungs, but then in the next one 3 months later it was gone. He had a floating stomach, a hernia in the membrane that was to keep his stomach in place allowed it to move into the space between the lower part of his lungs. As sad as this was to hear, it was better than the alternative, cancer. However, at his age and the fact that he had a heart condition he couldn't have surgery. But he lived for another happy and, relatively, healthy 2 years, and was still playful until a couple of days before he passed. So if your cat's throwing up a lot and is really skinny ask your vet about floating stomachs, but don't be surprised if it can't be diagnosed. I only found out by a fluke chance. Best of luck to anyone who's going through something similar. 😸
Older video and not sure if it's already been mentioned in the comments, but I'd just like to share something I unfortunately learned fairly recently on this. If your cat vomits and it looks dark brown like Coke or Pepsi or something immediately take them into the vet. They are vomiting blood. Found out my kitty has renal failure and if I had waited any more time taking him, I very likely would have lost him. He is now on a Rx diet and doin well ☺️
Wow, this is good information! My cat throws up exactly once or twice a month. She's definitely a snarf & barfer, and just expelled a hairball the other day.
A few years ago, my spouse and I were discussing one of our cats' vomiting behavior with their veterinarian. As the vet educated us, he described the normal frequency and type of vomiting as "That's just sport." Thank you, Dr. D.
I am a psychotherapist and the cat hairball is a perfect metaphor for what a client needs to do and examine the itty bitty pieces they have ingested or consumed that doesn't work well.
Thank you so much for this video.... Being first time cat owners this has been a question on our mind for over a year! I feel like my cat is more normal than I had thought. Thanks Jackson! ☺️🐱
Hi Jackson!! You are SO spot on about cats!! My wife and I have 7 “feline children “ each one with totally different personalities! I feel so relieved with your description. One of them simply eats too fast !! We will follow your suggestions as we have for many years watching your program. Oh!! By the way, we love your replication of the sound of a cat with allergies, sounds PERFECTLY the same as our giant orange tabby, very handsome cat who does have allergies. Keep up your fantastic work, Jackson!! Sincerey, Tim & Karin
I just adopted a kitten for the first time yesterday. It hasn’t thrown up yet, but I’m watching this just in case. I’m nervous, but excited about this new friendship.
My two cats throwed up alot. Then I read an article about raised food bowls that keep the neck straight and decided to give it a try. Now they rarely throw up.
My cat ate a neighbor's grass, which, unbeknownst to me, had been sprayed with poison. She got pancreatitis. The vet an I worked and worked but my beloved cat died of it. It was awful. I didn't catch it in time. The barfing and diarrhea were awful. My poor baby. It's an awful disease. Please, if your cat is throwing up often, take it to the vet. Thank you, Jackson,. This is a very good video.
10:23. One of my cats gets asthma due to allergies (we think she’s allergic to the outside world 🤷🏻♀️) and it’s exactly this...a hacking cough. The vet gave us Prednisone tablets that help heaps. Edit: you can’t use human prednisone for cats because the dosages will be wrong so please don’t. * Cats need a vet if they have cat asthma * 11:11 she also gets IBD (because she actually has ‘triple allergies ‘. It affects her skin as well, she gets sores all over her body). We tried SO MANY brands and types of food (cost us a lot of money trying different brands). If your cat has IBD and you’re in Australia, I highly recommend “Fussy Cat, Grainfree, Chicken and Turkey with Cranberry “. You can buy it at Woolworths (the bag is black and white) and it’s the only food my cat can keep down. We were desperate until we found the Fussy Cat brand. I hope this helps someone...🌸
Too bad Allegra does not come in cat doses. It is the best antihistamine ever made. No symptoms or drug interactions to worry about, Prednisone is NASTY! I would have to be facing death first. I have grown increasingly allergic every time I have to take certain steroids (mostly topical) but doctors are in love with those mostly nasty drugs.
@@toriless prednisone has damn near saved my life the two times I had to take it. The first time was last summer, my first few months living in the south, and the pollen was aggravating my asthma so much I’d wake up in the middle of the night hacking and gasping. Prednisone took care of the inflammation in my lungs. The other time was when my bum wrist was acting up, I was in so much pain I hadn’t had a decent night’s sleep in two weeks. I’m talking I was so exhausted I was struggling to form coherent sentences. Two days into my prednisone pack I finally slept 🙌🏽 my psychiatrist was worried, she told me it can actually be really bad for people with mood disorders, which I didn’t know. So I can 100% see how people have bad reactions. I didn’t take it when it was prescribed for my wisdom teeth surgery, I only take stuff like that when I feel it’s really necessary for that reason
I remember growing up, my family's cat Dusty would always be throwing up. It seemed like it was an almost every day occurrence, but it was probably more like once or twice a week in reality. We went to many different vets, and tried different medicines and diets, but nothing seemed to help her. The vets couldn't figure out what, exactly, was wrong. She did end up living until she was 18 years old, and she lived a very happy life other than the seemingly constant puking, but to this day I wonder what exactly was going on with her for her to throw up so much...
Few, my 5 month year old cat just threw up for the first time. I got scared. Glad to know it's normal. But I'll keep an eye her and take her to the vet for a check up
My cat eats slow and still gets sick, sometimes twice a day. Took him to the vet and they said he was fine. Going to a new vet. When my cat gets sick daily and they tell me he’s fine... NO
My cats been puking nearly every day for literally 15 years now. It’s sad and frustrating and not one single vet can figure out how to stop it, his weight is good, but mesh, almost every dang day…. He’s restricted to only a couple of rooms in our house
I’ve tried other types of food, and some are better than others. There is no reason why he gets sick that I can think of. ( other than the occasional hair ball )
I sit down next to my cat when it is his meal time, he then eats slower. He likes it, good time to hang out and bond. He also knows that I am his sentry and would protect him from disturbing him or anyone taking his food. Sometimes he would eat a little, have a cuddle and then resume his eating.
Makes me think of the Pixar movie "Inside Out." The part of that movie I remember best is at the end, when it zoomed into a cat's head, and the cat's brain/emotion minions included a cat in the background doing the perfect head bobbing thing that they do when they're about to hack something up. Hard relate when that happened.
My sister's cat threw up three MASSIVE piles overnight while I was sleeping, so I had to assume it only happened in a space of a few hours. When I woke up to them and cleaned everything up, it was pretty obvious which cat it was as she had a staring coat, was isolating herself from the rest of the clowder and was overall looking pretty miserable. We just observed her that day with the intention of a vet visit if her poorly spell didn't lift on its own by the next day. Well, it did lift, and we discovered the culprit behind her misery was a house millipede she'd happily devoured. They come up our drains so now we've had to keep them plugged because the cats will eat them! Makes me shudder to think about it. While the millipede itself isn't toxic, the oils on them can be so we put it down to that and took some better precautions. Oh and we also found two dead millipedes in her poo. :) Nice visual for you there.
Snarf/barf is so common in my cats. One eats like he's never seen food in his life. Probably comes from his background living in a cat hoarding situation.
My female was found pregnant in the wild in a farming town. She appears to have had a home gotten pregnant and was in the wild and developed "food issues" that is still a lingering insecurity many years later.
Yes it comes from learning that food is in short supply when they were a kitten, so they develop anxiety about getting enough food. Try puzzle toys to hide food around the house. Its seriously the best system I promise. Google it, they sell them on amazon, its the best thing in the world for your cat and for you!! 😄
I got a new kitten a little less than a year ago from the local shelter. He exhibits a lot of behaviors that point to him being orphaned at a very young age, one of the main ones is his food obsession. When I first got him he would eat until he was sick. If there was food anywhere he wasn’t allowed to have he’d cry, and he’ll eat almost anything, food or otherwise. Over this last year I’ve been able to train him to be way more comfortable around food. He has to sit before he gets the bowl and he’s not allowed to eat until I tell him he can. Somehow, that’s gotten him to eat slower and be more comfortable walking away with food still in the bowl.🤷🏽♀️
My neighbor's cat come visit every day and eat. Then last year I got a traumatized kitty who was always checking to make sure there was food in her bowls. But the neighbor kitties would come and eat, and after my kitty would just complain to me until they were refilled, even if she wasn't hungry. It was something about just knowing I was not going to be neglectful of anything. She isn't so paranoid now, but man, she really trained me to be sure that even when I go to bed, her dishes will never get emptied totally.
My cat is a sweetheart but he has PICA, he will eat wicker paper, plastic on wires , you name it! Has to watched and we have stripped down the house ... It's insane.
May be constipation. Throwing up can be caused by straining in the litter box. Definitely get your cat checked because constipation can be an early sign of kidney disease.
Had been binging your videos lately just to find about this topic, thank you Jackson for those tips. My 6 yo cat has always thrown up more regularly than the others, with "barfing activity" often happening on streak during a few amount of days each month. Vet checked him and said he was fine, our main suspicion being chewing on grass for the cause. I cut grass for them and while this streak of throwing up is not regular anymore, it still happens every few months. Considering checking him on another vet and possibly looking into any problems he may have. Another younger cat has been recently starting to hack without any throwing up whatsoever (although he has finally started to barf once or twice a month unlike before). He would also be going to the vet to see if this time they find asthma or he is still healthy. Although these behaviours can keep me up at night I'm certainly glad they don't have any problems with hair balls or parasites. Then there is the last of the pack, another 6 yo cat which I haven't even seen throwing up as much times as her age. 🐈
My kitty is always chasing me around the house when I have ice cream - I have to lock myself in the bedroom ALONE just to enjoy one bite of mango/pineapple/coffee/pistachio ice cream. EVERY SINGLE TIME - I feel like I'm having an affair with ice cream behind my cat's back.. Sorry sweetie, you just can't have ice cream - if you have questions, talk to Jackson Galaxy; he told me to not give you that LOL.
Mine's the same way lol. She'll sit pretty next to me ans even lifts her paw to "high five" or "give me paw" (she knows sit, paw, high five, and up) and when I don't respond, she pulls on my arm with her paw. Every once in a while I'll touch my finger to it and let her lick off the little bit (just melted), but never actually feed pieces to her. I can't help it, she's just too damn cute and sits so pretty 😻😹
I am lactose intolerant like my cats xD so we all eat out lactose in moderation xD my cats suffer for their guilty pleasure, but i suffer too. They have a taste, i have an entire meal out of it xD
How unusual is it for a letter of cats from the same litter to have asthma? My cats do the hacking, but vets don't know the cause. None of them think it's asthma, because ALL of them are doing this and they sound and behave identical during episodes. They crouch down and start coughing or hacking, been doing that since they were kitten's. The episodes are incredibly infrequent now that they're older, but still concerning since they all have this symptoms. They don't have any illnesses such as parasites. They turned 1 a couple months ago.
Especially, if it is the grass, hair or even too fast eating ones if you were not home to feed them. Those are normal even if not as regularly occurring as for some cats.
I get this. Outside of hairballs my cat has probably only thrown up once or twice in 5 years before the past month. Now he has thrown up at least once every weekend for the past three weekend. My husband keeps saying cats just throw up sometime and he seems fine afterward but I still.plan on taking him to the vet Monday as throwing up so often is definitely out of the ordinary for him. Hard to know what to do sometimes..
Excellent video, Jackson, thank you! 👍 I've seen her vomit right after breakfast and yep, my cat gobbles n' snarfs. Both that event and hairball puke are uncommon. She's not much of a puker. She does hack though. That asthma episode you performed, I've heard & seen that with her. She also makes all sorts of sounds while dozing and sleeping. I'll call my vet tomorrow.
When I first adopted my rescue cat, she’d bring up hairballs and so on about three times a day. She throws up now about once every couple of days. I groom her daily, her vet said it’s just her. She eats a bit too much too fast, the snarf and barf, and I think the hairballs made her prone to vomiting. Her reflex is pretty easily triggered. She’s also very very nervy, but she’s so much better. I only care that she’s eating well, healthy, and happy.
Thank you for the lactose thing. As someone who works in TNR and kitten rescue (enough to have ended up with 5 from whom I could not bear to part) I cannot tell you how infuriating the cream dream is. So many cats are surrendered simply because their owners didn't take the time to acquaint themselves with their new pet's basic biology. I keep it simple for potential adopters: Give your cat dairy? Expect diarrhea. Staunch Vegan? GTFO, no kitten for you. Have you done a video on that yet? Vegan cat food?
Perfect timing, my cat just threw up
Same!
And..? What did she throw up? 😀 hair "poop" or foam or objects? 🤣🤣
@@alinacalin9139 It was clear and foamy. We are taking care of a kitten who just got fixed so I’m guessing they were stressed that she existed 😅
Mine, too. One of my family's four cats had his little incident, but was considerate enough to head outside to do his business. He puked twice, both times in small amounts. The first was a puddle about the size of a 50 cent piece and was covered in white foam. The second was a string of food that he mostly slurped up.
One of my cats puked in each bathroom sink this week. Plus other places. Total snarf and barf.
My cat throws up in the floor never in the carpet. He is such a good boy
lucky my cat throws up all over the wall and carpet. last night she hit the bed, the wall, and the books next to bed
Mine threw up on the damn bed.
Mine have only just started to vomit and thankfully it has only been on the tile !!
My cat runs to her litterbox but she usually can't last that long so she pukes on the carpet
My cat throws up on the small, floor rugs so it can be easily wiped up and thrown in the washer. He makes clean up a breeze. Thank goodness! 😻
But I love him anyway !!! ha ha !!
Same with ours. We have laminate flooring throughout the entire house, but he ALWAYS picks the 1ft x 6ft runner in the front room.
probably to hide the scent? idk
*barf*"
Alllll my cats used to that annoying ass shit lmao
I had an older cat who would throw up like bile. Took him to the vet and they suggested bloodwork and it turned out he had hyperthyroidism. He lived for about another two years before he got bone cancer at 17 years old. He was my first ever black cat and he was the most amazing one too.
I also had cat that had hyberthyroidism. I learned to wake up the moment he started to make that throwing up sound. ^^
Same, I jst put dwn my 16 yr old black cat. Both of us had/have hypothyroidism. Miss him terribly. Take care! Happy new year!
How often did your cat with hyperthyroidism throw up?
@@aprilmae137 before the medication he threw up about 4 times a day for about 3 days. After that it was about 2 times every few days.
God rest your little baby's sweet soul! 💖I hate when people talk crap about black cats!!
I don’t know why they even use non-animal protein in cat food.
Give your little Lucifer quality food and unconditional love.
What was the cat food that you switched too? I’d like to try it for my cat
Me: Hello, I’m shopping for new bedroom carpet.
Carpet salesman: That’s great! What color are you considering?
Me: What do you have in Cat Barf brown?
Laminated flooring, waterproof wood flooring (my neighbor was putting some in a couple of months ago and they only have kids not puking cats) or even just manufactured wood.
@toriless Cat barf and she’d fit is exactly why I chose an apartment with hard wood laminate floor 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha! Great color.
When I replaced my carpet I took a sample of my cat’s kibble to see which carpet would camouflage the color.
Mine are strategists, suspected engineers. Proof is the fact they know exactly where my first step out of bed will be, THATS where the first puke of the day lands.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Better than IN your bed, like my cat does. LOL. But yeah, I feel ya. *NO* place is a good place for cat puke. Like on the bathroom rug in the middle of the night.

Yes.
Grr!
@@Linda7647
Yes! Pillows, and freshly washed throws.
@@ohnomyheartisheavey hope this fixes your cat puking issue!!! 💗💗💗 it’s so sad when we see our cats in distress like that
@Mel Barrett Yeah that might too.
Thanks for sharing.
So sorry for your loss!
Sorry for your loss:(. How did your change your cats diet, if I may ask? Thank you.
@@alvodin6197 i also want to ask this question
Galaxy!
Jackson, one day can you make a video where you introduce us to YOUR cats?
One of our cats had an episode where she was just puking continuously every few minutes. Took her to the vet (thinking she'd been poisoned) but they couldn't identify the reason. They gave her anti-nausea medication and sent her home.
A couple days later, she was back to hacking and puking, and I noticed something sticking out of her nose. I pulled it out... it was a 5" stalk of grass. It must've been stuck in the back of her throat, causing her to gag for days. Poor kitty.
Aww, poor little girl. I'm glad you found the cause.
What the hell? Your vet is terrible if they didn't do a good check up.
@@Kanggaxx it’s possible the grass wasn’t visible and only became visible after the cat was hacking more. I’m sure no vet just simply missed a stalk of grass sticking out of a cat’s nose 🙄
@@Hannah-zw9ow Well clearly the blade of grass was there. Not exactly sticking out of its nose, no, clearly... Eyeroll. But deeper down in its throat.
Perfect idea for an alarm clock for cat owners: when the alarm goes off, you hear the sound of a cat hacking. Guaranteed to work every time.
Great idea, someone could invent it and get rich quick!
Then you would get used to it and when they are actually barfing you'll just ignore it 😂
Actually in my case it's mostly waay before the actual alarm goes off 😁
I read somewhere on line that some cats may throw up (bile/liquid) if their stomachs get too empty.
My cat is such a stubborn little dude...
my cat just threw up for the first time this week, jackson just KNOWS what i need to hear
Good for you for taking care of your baby's needs!
Thank you 😻😸
swedishlina dry food is so bad for cats. So much crap in it. Good thing you switched
omg same here !!!!
But on a couple of really bad asthma days, we shared a few breaths of nebulizer mist when we both had wheezing attacks hit at the same time.😷🙀
Yes, please! A video on cat asthma.
But I have a question if you don't mind. I don't give my cats or kittens milk at all except for cat milk from the store for little kittens and then I weed them off. My cat once had constipation and was throwing up cos there was no room left. Our Vet helped a lot.
That happened to one of my cats too. She swallowed a bunch of hair and basically had a hairball stuck in her bowels. She needed surgery to get it out so she could start eating again. 😿

It can be because there's no room (as in, they're obstructed), but cats also have an odd reflex where constipation can trigger vomiting directly. There's a nerve connection that causes it. Helpful Vancouver Vet talked about it in a video at one point.
Omg, i love this cat guy so much. I have learned so much from him. Every single video i watch of this guy is PACKED with info. Thank you so much!
My four year old Marcie was throwing up little piles of clear liquid for a day or so before I noticed. By the time I realized something was very wrong it was too late.
Sounds like she lived a happy life up until then ❤️
Thanks for this comment Steve

Thank you Jackson for loving all kittys and helping us kitty parents! God bless you and yours! 😻
my cat just threw up for the first time yesterday. I feel like Jackson read my mind.
It never hurts to ask a professional...😊
how did you locate your vet tech? I am looking for one for my kitten
Hey Jackson! Thanks so much for making this video because now we know our big fluffy kitty just needed slower feeding and more brushing. He’s doing so much better thanks to your tips!
My cat was throwing up after every meal and I changed him to a ceramic bowl and he hasn't puked since.
@Warren Liberty 😸😸🥣
Thanks, love to all and stay safe! xx
My Tabby Luna Tuna throws up because she ravages her food bowl like something is going to take her food from her.
MY CAT DOES THE SAME
I have a scarf n barfer too!
My cat Felix is the same.
Mine occasionally does too. There are lots of affordable slow feeder bowls available. Her's has an extruded fish pattern that the food suits in for her to work it out. This helps them take longer and doubles as a little mental puzzle.
Amazon has a ceramic bowl for like $25 that helps my cats slow their eating
Super helpful 👍 Another reason might be because your cat is munching on a plant that night be poisonous. So guys, check if your plants are safe!
Also when it comes to hairballs there are a lot of good foods and treats that are anti hairball, and they work pretty well. Definitely something to consider if your cat gets hairballs.
Could you name some good foods and treats for hairballs?...THANKS🙋🌹
Hey Jackson! Can you do a vid on oral cat health. Should we be brushing cat's teeth? if so, how do you do it? thx :)
Oh, it'd help me a lottt
would definitely be interested in this.
Need this! I knew someone's dog that was not getting regular dental care and it was a really bad time and led to serious medical problems. I don't want to risk it with my bebe
Yes! I'd love to see that too!
Me too
Great video, thank you!
Greetings!
"C'mon buddy, do it or don't do it."
Giggle
"It looks like a turd coming out of your cat's mouth."
Spitting toothpaste.
Hi Jackson, will you please make a video about the loss of a cat/supporting a cat at the end of their life? I know it would be a hard topic, but I think it would be really helpful for so many people 💕
Great suggestion.
Yes! I would love this, I still grieve over my two cats I lost within 2 years of one another 10 years ago. Rest in peace my loves Miko and Sunny🖤🖤🖤
Good info. We just found out in the past 6 months, Ms Kitty only vomits with beef (so far).
Also grooming your cat daily like brushing the hair makes a big difference
.. or even every two days but until the hair brush stops filling.
Lori Love same
The only time I really panicked with my yarfers was when Rogue threw up red tinged barf. I took her to the emergency vet thinking she was bleeding internally. It turned out to be an irritated esophagus and she had to take a tiny dose of Prilosec for a few days. (Like human, like cat, lol)
So there probably should be a subcategory about colors in puke...
Yellow is bile, barfing on an empty stomach.
Hello, Chessie Cat! My first cat was Chessie, waaay back in 1945! I had the Chessie books, too.
Agree. Mine threw up red, yesterday. I didn't know if he caught a mouse, or what.
Thank you so much for covering cat asthma! One of our cats was asthmatic and we could have made her life easier if we'd known sooner.
It's so helpful to have a guide as to what is normal for him and what is not >•
I remember when i was a kid, a street cat barged into our living room, threw up and then left.
How rude!
"That will teach you. GOOD DAY!"
Any carpet in a (puke) storm.
I literally laughed out loud at this. Hahahaha 🤣 Just picturing it has me laughing again.
If cats eat mice and rats in the wild, why don't pet food companies make mice or rat cat food? Mice and rats breed fast so you have a large supply to make food with. It seems like a no brainer to me.
This "natural" cat food should contain spiders and houseflies, too.
Because they want to catch live prey and play with it and kill it
@@firewilson920 .....but mice and rats are food for them just like chicken canned food is.
@@LindaGailLamb.0808 moths carry worms. They infect anything that eats them.
Thank you i think this is my problem
thanks, my cat seems to have puked up bile and completely intact kibble. It could also be from eating leaves / dirt from the balcony idk
This was very informative, thank you.
i know this is an old response but was your cat throwing up daily? We seem to think its the food too but waiting for blood work results.
My long haired cat has definitely thrown up hairballs of the long turd variety. At least I know that’s what it is for certain now!
She can't help it. Please don't be angry with her. She's trying to do the right thing the only ways she knows how.
sweesbees remember to brush your cat everyday and feed a wet food diet. Raw egg yolks are great for hairballs
Thank you so much for all your videos! They aren’t only informative and helpful but your style is entertaining as well!
He is now on a Rx diet and doin well ☺️
Wow, lucky save! Yes agree dark stuff in mouth/puke can be blood.
I keep telling my cat, "You need a new hobby.'
I am a psychotherapist and the cat hairball is a perfect metaphor for what a client needs to do and examine the itty bitty pieces they have ingested or consumed that doesn't work well.
Saw that golden thumbnail and had to watch hahaha
Sincerey,
Tim & Karin
I just adopted a kitten for the first time yesterday. It hasn’t thrown up yet, but I’m watching this just in case. I’m nervous, but excited about this new friendship.
My two cats throwed up alot. Then I read an article about raised food bowls that keep the neck straight and decided to give it a try. Now they rarely throw up.
I never considered cat asthma. I’m constantly told that he’s working a hairball out of his system but he never hack’s hairballs. My poor baby!
Thanks, Jackson! This is a necessary video!
Great info & a Hugh relief! Thank you!❤
I'm glad I watched this video, going to have my cat checked out for asthma.
* Cats need a vet if they have cat asthma *
11:11 she also gets IBD (because she actually has ‘triple allergies ‘.
Nothing wakes me up faster, in the middle of the night, than hearing my cat starting barf ON MY BED! Carpet? No prob...
Same
Few, my 5 month year old cat just threw up for the first time. I got scared. Glad to know it's normal. But I'll keep an eye her and take her to the vet for a check up
This is what I needed badly my cat throwing up 😬☹️
200. Finally my time to shine as a solid big number like. Thank you Academy of timing and meta humor.
I would be very interested in a video about IBD. So would my Snowshoe. She's my hairball specialist, too.
There's a Facebook group you. Ight want to check out. IBDKitties.
@@carr0760 Thx. I wish I had known this way before my vet diagnosed my cat with this.
My cat eats slow and still gets sick, sometimes twice a day. Took him to the vet and they said he was fine. Going to a new vet. When my cat gets sick daily and they tell me he’s fine... NO
Yvonne Lanese-Coppola ....that does sound suspicious. Could be a food intolerance? I hope he's going to be ok.
Switch water to bottled "distilled" or "purified". My cats improved so much after this switch.
@@kelleywyskiel8513 switch water to bottled distilled or purified. I did this switch with my cats and the constant puking stopped.
Mine just started doing this
Definitely interested in the IBD video. One of my cats was "diagnosed" with it a few months ago, so we're new to the journey.
My cat is a sweetheart but he has PICA, he will eat wicker paper, plastic on wires , you name it! Has to watched and we have stripped down the house ... It's insane.
Man Jackson, I just wanted to say thank you. Keep up the good work.
Huh my cat literally just threw up in her litter box yesterday, perfect timing
Good one! 😂
Hi, is it normal for cats to puke a lot after she is dewormed??
Perfect place too. I came home yesterday and it was on the only carpet in the entire house 🤦♀️
@@39suhanamakhija44 it’s best to call your Vet and ask
My boyfriends cat does this with any kind of can and I have to show her that its veggies.
My cat loves cheese. If I have Brie, or Havarti cheese he wants it. Been telling him no lately but it's hard because it makes him happy.
Mine just try to lick my used cereal bowl.
Yes, you should get an Emmy for that!
My cat rarely throws up. So on that rare time, I freak out and think I need to get him to the vet. My husband is like, "Chill. He's okay!" Lol
Watching this after cleaning up cat vomit. Ha.
Me too 🙌🏻
Samezies.
My little fuzzball was throwing up and found out it was hyperthyroidism. She has to go on meds. Glad we caught it before the renal and heart failure.
