I’ll have to try some of that. Butter is a staple around here! I’ve been stocking up and hopefully the cow will produce enough for some as well, but I think having some dried butter might be a good idea!
I didn’t water bathe or pressure canned mine. I put butter smushed into the cans and put my lid and ring on it. I put it in the oven at 325 (don’t go higher), for one hour. Pull them out of the oven and put on a town. As soon as you can shake (upside down to right side up) the butter and do it every 10 mins till it solidifies. It keeps the butter from dividing the lactose and oil. As the butter starts cooling the cans will seal.
I get a cheddar cheese powder at the Amish store, which I specifically use in home made broccoli soup. You could use in macaroni dishes, etc, all kinds of things
Yep, I talk about the cheddar powder in other videos, My main problem with them is finding them without added ingredients such as citric acid or others that are GRAS. I still stocked up on some though just to add flavor and ease to the pantry but will limit the amount we use
@@RainCountryHomestead thanks, it’s on the shelf in just a plastic bag that says cheddar cheese powder, so I don’t know anything other than that about it. Your info is good to know.
Good morning! Is it not cheaper to dehydrate your own butter and heavy cream? I am trying to decide the best way to store things. Thanks! May Jesus continue to bless you and your family
Those things need special equipment to dehydrate. I am not even sure a freeze dryer works on such fatty foods. It uses a process called spray drying. I tried drying heavy cream and humanmade almond milk but both were too fatty so they did not powder up, but instead turned to paste. You can dehydrate whole milk, cheese, and eggs though, and I do. Well, at least the cheese and eggs, I have only experimented with whole milk to see if it would work but for the cost of organic milk here, it is hardly worth it to dry it when I can buy it
I ordered the whole milk with cream powder(made in Sweden) but I haven't used it yet. Was holding off opening the cans until absolutely needed...or in the spring if winter isn't as harsh as I think it will be. We shall see.
I like to try using right away so I know if I am going to like it at all and to get familiar with it. That way I can decide if it is something worth stocking up on more as well as knowing how best to use it when needed. You can try it and then repackage what is left by vacuum sealing into jars
I've been storing and buying non-fat powdered milk, and, have been happy with it. It is great for using in cooking/baking, puddings etc. For drinking, I buy a gallon of whole milk & pour half gallon into another container. I add 1/2 gal of reconstituted non-fat milk to the half gal milk, let it sit overnight, and, serve to the family. No one can taste any difference, even when I tell them what it was. I then started cuttinb back on the amt of whole milk, using more of the non-fat milk, and, we all like it. Best tip is reconstitute non-fat milk and let sit overnight in fridge. I've been pleased.
@@job955 I like non fat for my figure but I prefer the fat. I live off the grid and haven't owned a refrigerator for over five years but I get what you're saying. I used to bodybuild and I would do what you are describing to a gallon of refrigerated skim milk to up the protein content of my milk. It's a great idea what you suggest. My son would prefer the fat, too but now he's bodybuilding and watching /chosing his battles with fat, too. I sure would love some of that whole powder to put in my tea now, though. I'm gonna get me some. Down the road (if we are facing the famine they are describing) the fat will be a good and needed thing in the storage. Plus we need it to last.
My other issue with non fat powdered milk (besides it not storing as well and the taste being nasty) is that we NEED those milk fats. One of the best diet changes I made a good number of years ago was getting away from fat reduced milks and switching to whole organic.
@@RainCountryHomestead I learned that the hard way. I used to do the Susan Powter thing. It worked for keeping low body fat but I was so dang grouchy and my cognitive ability went right down the drain! I have just learned to pick my triglyceride battles a little better. I'm almost 50 and I'm not trying to be as fit as before (nor do I care) but I want some good flavor and somethng to absorb my fat solluble vitamines. I eat a lot of olive oil/ coconut oil in my cooking, too.

Hi Heidi, Great tip. I stock this butter powder, too. It does have its benefits. Do you can refrigerated butter? I love to see your smile. Bet Patrick does too. Tonza in beautiful rural Georgia.
Love your videos ,such good content.. and I got my apron yesterday!!! I love it , and the length is great!!! What is the ratio from powder to add to a dough??
Wow. I was just looking at all the products Hoosier offers yesterday. It started when I wanted to see if there is such a thing as powdered sour cream. Then buttermilk. Then I saw the butter powder. In the reviews it looked like some people received some already spoiled products. I really thought about the whole milk, but the cost per gallon was too much to justify. Has anyone tried the sour cream? Also, has anyone used the heavy cream to make whipped cream? Was it successful and how was the taste?
When you are talking powdered products, they are always going to be more per gallon/ounce than fresh. You are paying for the time and energy that went into the drying process. To me, to have it as back up, or for things where powdered is necessary (i.e. powdered milk is needed when making white chocolate), then it is worth the cost
I have bought several products from Hoosier hill farms. Still trying to learn the best ways to use them. I've tried using the whole cream powder for a coffee creamer. Not a fan. I tried hydrating the cream also to use in coffee. Also not a fan. I think my best bet is to use it in cooking. I'm secretly hoping you'll figure it out for us and do a video! Haha! I am thankful for this video as I have the butter powder but haven't opened it yet. God Bless!
I do not usually like cream in my coffee but also tried it in that and was not thrilled but using it in recipes that have some kind of milk base is pretty good. Just made Patrick biscuits and gravy this morning and used all dried milk for the gravy. I used whole milk powder plus the heavy cream powder and it turned out quite good
I kinda like the cream in my coffee. I can’t tell the difference between liquid creamer and this other than it takes longer to incorporate into the coffee.
Yes! It is excellent. I buy it by the case from PleasantHillGrain(dot)com Tastes great, long shelf life, a little pricey but I live in a small house without extra freezer space so this is what I use all the time. Buy it, you will be very happy! 🙂
Yes, as will ALL dried and freeze dried foods because THEY put in the time, work, and energy it takes to dry and package the goods. One has to always stop and remember what they are paying for. I will always still stock up on fresh butter but I like having the powder in our long term storage just in case I cannot get it at all
Hoosier here. Hoosier hills only a few hours away from me. I’m dieting and butter is absolute killer and was trying to find lower calorie replacement that’s not full of horrible chemicals. So I don’t recommend for bread and butter?
The powder is ok for making into a spread, as I said in the video, it will do, just not as good as fresh butter, but it works well in many things. Also remember that healthy fat is necessary. Many diets approach a full elimination of certain food groups yet we were made to utilize all of them (carbs, fats, proteins, cholesterol) to be in optimum health. It is the type of fat you should be concerned about avoiding such as canola, Crisco, vegetable oil, margarine and other fake butters (BAD news for sure) and keep the healthy ones like real butter, coconut oil, avocados and avocado oil, nuts, and so on
I just purchased a jar of the butter powder and noticed the BB date is 1/23. If I remove it from the jar and vacuum seal it, will I be able to extend the BB date? TIA!!!
I have not tried it but found it doubtful myself. I am not even sure it will whip up into a whipped cream and also find that doubtful but will try it some day. I have been finding plenty of uses for the heavy cream though

Please everyone, with our planet in crisis as it is , please learn about the disastrous effects Palm Oil is having on the destruction of our rain forests. Animals are becoming extinct. Potential medicinal plants are lost forever. Global weather storms are rooted in these destructive habits. Preserving foods for the event of a crisis is rather hypocritical if we don’t address the root cause. ❤️
Also make sure you know that there are environmentally friendly sources to get it from as well. Just like with anything, there are good and bad sources, so PLEASE look into the practices of each company for yourself.
High fat products are very hard to dehydrate at home. If the product, say whole milk, does not start to "powder" within a few hours of drying chances are that it will spoil, turn because of the fats before it powders. There are so many variables that come into play as well. Its not recommended to dehydrate dairy at home. I didn't say it couldn't be done just hard.
First, ghee does not last any longer than butter, second, I have made ghee before and while I liked the flavor, I only see its uses as limited since its flavor is unique and not what I would want for many things. I am finding the butter powder has other uses as well. I still stock up on fresh butter as well and if I really wanted or needed to, I could can it and put it on a shelf like many others do and if my freezers died, that is what I would do but for now I prefer to freeze it. Another things to consider though is butter powder takes up less room than either ghee or butter on a shelf and my shelf space is also precious
Check around and see if there is a UK based brand that sells something similar. Shipping costs have been going up all over every few months so yes, anything you buy from any other country, especially now that the UK is forcing people to have a VAT license to do so, is going to be expensive. I no longer ship to the UK for this very reason as I refuse to get a license just to ship there

I’ll have to try some of that. Butter is a staple around here! I’ve been stocking up and hopefully the cow will produce enough for some as well, but I think having some dried butter might be a good idea!
Buuuuttttteeerrrrrr!
I pressure canned butter a month ago, it came out great! I have the Hoosier Hill heavy cream, works great!
@G-man I have seen people do that
I never tried it.
Thank you, Heidi. You always share such good information and it’s greatly appreciated. 😃
Thank you Rhonda :)
Thanks Heidi, just ordered several items through your link!
Thank you!
Thank you ☺️ going to give this a try and God Bless you and your family from middle GA 🙏
Great, Came from Mary's Nest!!!
I imagine it would be good to use in Augratin pots. Or other like recipes .
I have never heard of this! Omg I'm definitely gonna be getting some! Would be great for buttermilk biscuits 😋
I also use the powdered buttermilk for biscuits

It turns out great, I will talk about that in the video I plan to do on using the heavy cream powder :)
Butter....Parkay.....BBBUUUTTTEERRRRR! PARKAY!!!! Butter!? PAAAARRRKKKAAYYY!!!!!!!! LOL Nice Heidi!
Well, at least the cheese and eggs, I have only experimented with whole milk to see if it would work but for the cost of organic milk here, it is hardly worth it to dry it when I can buy it
@@RainCountryHomestead thanks! Have a Jesus filled day
I ordered the whole milk with cream powder(made in Sweden) but I haven't used it yet.
I found some at Walmart online. I got white cheddar and heavy cream.
Powdered milk can be used to make butter if needed.
Heidi, More good information on the butter powder; if that is what people want! that don't want to make Ghee.
Ty
Oh gosh. I've been storing non-fat milk. I'm glad I saw your vid, Heidi. I'm gonna try the ones with fat. I actually like them better, too.
@@spinderella3602 I am 54 and have not worried about high fat foods in many years, I just concern myself with the TYPE of fat, that is what one needs to be careful of when it comes to that. I do no do canola oil, margarine, or other junk fats
Thanks 😊
I just looked at your video, thank you for the review❤ will it melt in oatmeal?
I love your channel! So informative. I was wondering if you can extend the life of while milk powder , or cream powder by freezing it? Thank you so much!
I just vacuum seal in jars. It will stay fresh and last for many years doing that
Thank you, so very helpful!
Butter on butter! Yum! Hello Heidi, can you make butter with powdered cream?
Never tried it but since I have both powdered cream and powdered butter, that seems sufficient :)
Hi Heidi, Great tip. I stock this butter powder, too. It does have its benefits. Do you can refrigerated butter? I love to see your smile. Bet Patrick does too. Tonza in beautiful rural Georgia.
I have never canned butter, I prefer to freeze it but if I had to, I would with no fear

🐝Great!!🖒thanks🌻
Love your videos ,such good content.. and I got my apron yesterday!!! I love it , and the length is great!!! What is the ratio from powder to add to a dough??
O good!
I used whole milk powder plus the heavy cream powder and it turned out quite good
Thanks Heidi! I'll try that! ❤
I kinda like the cream in my coffee. I can’t tell the difference between liquid creamer and this other than it takes longer to incorporate into the coffee.
Has anyone tried the canned butter (Red Feather) from New Zealand ? How is the taste? How long does it keep?
Yes! It is excellent. I buy it by the case from PleasantHillGrain(dot)com
Tastes great, long shelf life, a little pricey but I live in a small house without extra freezer space so this is what I use all the time. Buy it, you will be very happy! 🙂
@@gonebananas1076 Thanks for the information☺️
True . But it costs a lot more than regular butter .
Yes, as will ALL dried and freeze dried foods because THEY put in the time, work, and energy it takes to dry and package the goods. One has to always stop and remember what they are paying for. I will always still stock up on fresh butter but I like having the powder in our long term storage just in case I cannot get it at all
Not sure if missed it but do you dehydrate butter your self?
TIA!!!
Yes, it will retain its quality for longer in jars
@@RainCountryHomestead thank you!

Can you rehydrate the heavy cream powder then blend it to butter ?
I have not tried it but found it doubtful myself. I am not even sure it will whip up into a whipped cream and also find that doubtful but will try it some day. I have been finding plenty of uses for the heavy cream though

Makes great pound cake
The sour cream needs improvement imo it tasted flat. I added some lemon juice and it was better but still not great.
This is why I was afraid to try it, it had the worst reviews out of all the products I had read about.
Does it smells good?
If repacking In Mylar bags would you recommend using an oxygen absorber?
For packing in mylar, yes, that is the best option in order to vacuum unless you get the kind of mylar that can be vacuum sealed with a foodsaver or other such device.

What's the shelf life of the product? 1 year?
I believe so but I rarely pay attention to that as expiration dates are little more than guidelines. Most dried foods can last many years if stored properly.
I’m looking.for a non dairy milk and butter powder. Please advise
They do make powdered nut milks: amzn.to/3pGlMtP
However, you can just vacuum seal up nuts of choice for long term and them make your own nut milk as needed. Here is my playlist on nut milks and other dairy free recipes:
ruclips.net/p/PLzVtTPDzFPKFKFuFkl94wFD6lbqODebri
Thank you so much for the information
How long is the shelf life?
If properly stored in a cool dry place, it should be indefinite. Dates on shelf stable foods are nothing more than "Best by" dates which has nothing to do with the actual shelf life
Please everyone, with our planet in crisis as it is , please learn about the disastrous effects Palm Oil is having on the destruction of our rain forests.
Oh, Hoosier, not who's your. 🤣
🤣
Can we just dehydrate our own butter?
A lot of times with dairy, there are special steps to take, I have not looked into it myself so I do not know how it is done
@@RainCountryHomestead thank you ! 💕💕

Flying rooster lol
Why not just make your own ghee instead of buying butter powder?
First, ghee does not last any longer than butter, second, I have made ghee before and while I liked the flavor, I only see its uses as limited since its flavor is unique and not what I would want for many things. I am finding the butter powder has other uses as well. I still stock up on fresh butter as well and if I really wanted or needed to, I could can it and put it on a shelf like many others do and if my freezers died, that is what I would do but for now I prefer to freeze it. Another things to consider though is butter powder takes up less room than either ghee or butter on a shelf and my shelf space is also precious
This product cost an arm and a leg here in the UK, so it is not an option
Check around and see if there is a UK based brand that sells something similar. Shipping costs have been going up all over every few months so yes, anything you buy from any other country, especially now that the UK is forcing people to have a VAT license to do so, is going to be expensive. I no longer ship to the UK for this very reason as I refuse to get a license just to ship there
it doesnt melt its useless to me in making bread in my Bread machine
You add it dry to your flour. Works great. Then again, I have never used a bread machine and have no interest in one so maybe what you have to add or use is different than making by hand
