I realized that the optical audio port isn't needed since almost all HDTV's have a optical audio out that can be used for gaming headsets like my SteelSeries 800 with no lag so it makes sense to keep cost down for the customers.

There is actually a big difference in the controllers. The PS4 slim's has a kind of grippy feel with a rough rubber on the thumbsticks while the OG PS4 had a controller which a smooth finish with smooth rubber on the thumbsticks. These aspects really make a difference to the ergonomics and feel of the controller. I personally prefer the Slim's.

The slim also has 5ghz wifi support, the original only had 2.4, as well as USB 3.1 ports instead of 3.0 on the launch models. So there are some performance benefits besides size, cooling, noise, and power draw

hot to the touch doesn't mean its overheated. pretty much all small powerful electronics get hot to the touch. the old ps4 got pretty hot as well. it will give you an overheating warning if it starts to overheat

@@darkmastertaken nope. My volume stays at around 10 and I can just barely hear the ps4. I did replace the thermal paste though, and that significantly decreased the noise level. I don't see a point in upgrading either.
The original ps4 only wins on looks. It's probably the best looking console of all time. The ps4 slim doesn't look bad, it still looks nice, but it's just not as iconic.

I just bought a ps4 abt a week ago, and only just realized that it’s actually a slim instead of a regular, (I kept wondering why it looked different from others XD) but it seems like the mistake was a good thing. I’m used to my old xbox 360 which is SO LOUD, and half the time I can’t even hear my ps4. Love it!
I'm getting a slim for Christmas after having an original Xbox one for years. That thing is SUPER loud so I'm excited about it.

I have the original PS4 with the classy shiny side case, and it just for the first time gave me a “getting too hot” message before shutting itself down. (Awesome feature by the way!) Anyways, it’s February 2020 and I bought the system in August of 2014, I’m satisfied with the performance, especially when my WiFi signal was strong. My main problem is which system I should upgrade to and I am tempted to get the “pro” version, but I hope that it’s something that would be worth the extra 100 dollars.

Hi.
The new DualShock4 can operate via USB data transfer in all PS4's. In other words it can work wireless or wired (less pad lag while playing)
Plus the slim and PRO have better wifi conection than the original PS4. And the Optical port will be present in the PS4 PRO.
There are a couple more diferences between the 3 versions but are developers related. The PS4 is the best system development wise and that is a great thing for all and for the games too!!

One important thing you missed about the new Dualshock is that it can send data via usb (previous one used the cable only for charging). What this does is removes imput lag between the controler and console, witch is importand for competitive gaming:)

I literally have the very first gen of ps4 ive taken it apart and cleaned it several times but yet it still is as loud as a engine and just a dust collector.
As a guy who owns a ps4 phat and a slim, yeah the slim is quieter, more power efficient, has better wifi, slimmer design, and an actual physical button.
You missed something! The PS4 Slim supports 5ghz wifi. It also has HDMI 2.0a where as the OG is a modified version of 1.4
Anyone reading this help, as I’m going to get a ps4 to upgrade my Xbox one s.(I don’t like Xbox’s games, and more of my friends have ps4s.) Should I get the slim or the original? I don’t use optical out, so it’s not a big deal. Are they the same in performance? I just really want to make sure that I’m getting a console that is what I want.

Has anyone ever used optical audio? It always seemed to be a feature allot of gadgets adopted but was it actually used.
In contrast most want USB-C but companies are dragging their feet adopting it.
You can just use the optical audio out on your TV which is better because then you can use your turtle beach for both your PS4 and watching TV shows and movies in surround sound.

I have the ps4 slim, I got the infinite warfare bundle. I also found a way to get sound to my sound bar by plugging in my tvs optical out to the sound bar and now my ps4s sound works great on it!

I prefer my 2 older ones mainly because the glossy black goes with the unit it stands on better and I like the light strip down the front as I have mine standing up.

How the noise is it noise more than original, I play at night and sometime I turn off the vol but that noise really bother me.

Isn't the slim the Standard PS4 now because I searched up PS4 and I keep seeing the PS4 Slim design on the PS4 but without the slim name on the box.
I think hands-down the biggest difference is the ps4 slim 5ghz Wi-Fi which is also included in the PS4 Pro
You can upgrade a original to have 5.8Ghz. But is it worth it? Probably not. If your close to your router just plug in a Ethernet if your far away from it 2.4Ghz is better for long range anyways.

The change with the original PS4 controller and the slim are the materials and the sticks grip (IDK what's is called).
