Only in the US does off-roading refer to anything but driving off the road. The US always seems to take terms and just change their definitions completely. Look at the term "Off-road", and tell me what you think it originates from? Could it be "Driving off the road" possibly? The same has been done to "overlanding". Everywhere but the US it seems to be about traveling *over land* for longer periods of time, and not driving around on a pre-made track and/or driving out to the nearby lake a camping there for the night. A European overlander may go from Germany to China or South Africa or something while living out of the car. That's also why you don't see ridiculous lifts and massive tires on overland vehicles outside of the US. It would only make them worse at what they've been made for, which is travel. Backpacking as well, everywhere but the US it's a way of traveling. "I went backpacking around SE Asia for 18 months." etc. In the US, it's putting on a backpack and going camping. It's no wonder there's always confusion when it comes to those sorts of topics.
Gnawer Shreth You taking it too technical, you are correct about it being “off-road “ however there are levels to it also . And this type of “off-roading” where a basic Camry can easily do is pretty soft. Not really showing the vehicle of its real potential.
The G is what it is.. it's a luxury 4x4, built to be exactly that. That's why it costs 100k.. The Defender is a utilitarian vehicle intended as a work horse (model in vid is actually known as a utility) that has been modified and priced by a third party at 90 grand.. There is zero common ground (as standard) other than the fact they have 4 wheel drive. This is coming from someone that would kill for a G wagon but (happily) owns a Defender.
uuhhmm, just because recently Mercedes has focused almost exclusively on newly-rich russians and Beverly Hills moms with their AMG G-Wagons doesn't mean that it's not a real workhorse at heart. Look where the G comes from. It had been as utilitarian for about 20 years. The luxury bullshit came later.
@@heiligerjesus1960 Thats utter BS. If the Defender doesnt breakdown, its pretty much just as capable but with better clearance and articulation. Everybody is talking about the rattle of the landy compared to the quietness of the G wagon like it's the most important part. Landies aren't luxury, they're utility so they're bound to have some noise :) It's what makes them what they are.
And that you call it off road? Really? I've seen defender 110, 130 going up hills that were near vertical. A good prept defender has insane axle articulation.

To call the G a city runabout with its chassis on frame and 3 stock diff locks, which the defend doesnt have(stock), isnt really doing its justice. There is no major technical difference between those two, the G has 3 diff locks which makes it more hardcore offroad than the Defender which has an open front diff as far as i know
Rosyth Johnston well, traction control works with an open diff and brakes, it can never be as good as a mechanical lsd, u never have 4x4 traction, think about it
Rosyth Johnston Come on man what you say then is that ML is better then G and rivel of the Defender :) There is nothing better then proper mechanical diff-lock! Diff-lock offers constant traction for all wheel all the time. The traction control needs to sleep a wheel then apply brakes and cut power which is kind of passive system - it reacts after the appearance of less traction. There is a reason why most hardcore off-roaders install after market air-lockers :)
The two coolest off-roaders ever made. Well, in normal 4x4 sizes anyway. Things like Unimog, MAN 8x8 etc. are obviously pretty cool as well. :P I wish it was possible to make the two vehicles mate and have a perfect baby honestly. The G-Class is just in a different league when it comes to build quality and reliability though, so their car-baby would most likely be the perfect off-roader. Like, imagine a fucking Mercedes Defender G110 for example. Great size, great reliability, great off-road, great build quality. It'd be amazing. My only real issues with G-Class is the price and its size. It's still a big fucking brick to drive around like a Defender is, but it doesn't have the internal size advantage of being such a big brick. The Defender does. (Assuming you don't pick the 90). Sgt C4 FYI I never said the lack of anti roll bar or diff locks being the reason for LR Defender going out of production. I was generally referring to the video comparison and the fact that LR Defender is out of production.👍
12 mins 49 secs of my life wasted. What a poor comparison or test whatever you call it. Not to mention that road, can be driven in a Vauxhall Astra. You guys should to improve these kind of videos and tests.
Well the Defender is good off-road and this is pretty much everything you can say about it. The G is not only brilliant off-roader but you can also park it at the most fashionable coffees or opera house. Adding in the equation the poor reliability of the Defender and there is no place for comparison!

Thats a bit harsh, it was actually made in Austria (the pro version) and whilst it is more complex than the old Defender it proved solid and sold very well for decade with plenty going to various armed forces. Problem was that it was too expensive compared to competitors; was made for more forest environment (narrow) and has less load capacity that say a NIssan Patrol or Landcruiser 70 series.

anti roll bar, wheel articulation bull shit ... there is no replacement for 3 diff locks when coming to gaining traction on a slippery surface. plus how much more effective articulation you get after banging your head on the defender. cars don't go out of production for no reason.
None of those reasons you just stated where why the Defender went out of production lol
Benzinio i am a defender owner (27 years ago i bought one)and i can say its more reliable than any other vehicle.Buy one and you will love it like how you would love an old family dog
That's where there a load of pristine g wagons parked nicely with Bentley's and rollers. Then a muddy Defender pulls up and parks on the grass next to them. That's what Defender's are about
@@TheLizard-oe3cy Yes but you have take it to the vet every year. They are sort of reliable so long as you're always changing parts. At least the old ones were easy to work on.
Mercedes 👍👍👍
any one the wears a wrist watch as big as a phone should never review a 4x4
The Mercede's driver is painful; he drives TOO near the steering wheel.
What a complete let down!
Defender is far much better than G W
Harnoor Singh nnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooo.
getting stuck going down hill ???
5:55 I notice he didn't mention that the civilian version came out because nobody bought the military version. Like a lot of German engineering, too complex, expensive and difficult to manufacture. Like that tank they made.
