    Having worked on Ampco bronze for 10 years it's nice to see someone working with it. It's nasty, tough and the higher grades are hard to work with. HSS drills have to be altered to drill it and praying it doesn't freeze up in the part. Carbide tooling is preferred to work on it. Tapping is a nightmare. It has excellent wear properties for bearings and shaping metal parts.

    В ampco45 bronze Ni~5%, поэтому стружка вьётся и закручивается в клубок. Программно на CNC прерывайте подачу и стружка не будет скручиваться.
    Хотя учитывая ваш уровень профессионализма, вы и без меня это знаете :)

    Sounds smoother than what was produced deacadea ago..original was a witches brew..guy at foundry would litearaly stand there and tell others how much more of different materials to put in

      Z tego brązu lecą wióra podobne do stali. To nie jest ten co sypie się jak piasek. Na frezowanie nie było czasu, tylko tak przelotem.

    You should try polished, high rake inserts for aluminum in aluminum bronze.
    I get 10 times the tool life compared to a negative rake insert made for steel, and you can take a .001" finish cut without the insert just rubbing and deflecting.

      I end up trashing the parts because my high rake inserts catch in brass, does aluminium bronze behave differently ?

      I found bronze is always a pain for that. Espically drilling a big hole. We usally lap the drill when drilling. I have never had a problem turning it but I also use negative rake inserts like he does.

      @@HM-Projects Completely different animal. Alu-br will catch with real sharp inserts if you try and feed it REALLY hard, but under normal conditions (up to .400"doc and .015"/rev) I haven't had any issues.
      Brass on the other hand, stick with negative inserts if you can, or if you have a positive holder like a DCMT, use inserts made for steel. They usually have enough of a k-land edge prep to stop the tool from grabbing.
      Drills for brass should have the cutting edge blunted with an oil stone to stop it from grabbing.

      @@wendull811 Keep in mind that aluminum bronze and normal 660 bearing bronze don't have much in common except "bronze" in the name.
      Alu-br will work harden if you look at it sideways, where are as brass/bearing bronze can be cut with a dull butter knife and it'll still break a chip.
      Good call on lapping the cutting edge on drills. It is VIOLENT when those suckers grab, especially if you have a pilot hole.

    Thank you for that kennametal tool idea. Maitnince came over tightened up the belts and we were able to run it thru the 4140 shaft at 67rpm. .400 a side doc at .045ipr. It screamed like no one's buisness but concedering the shaft is 3 inches over size and is 200 inches long I am not sure what they expected.
    I really wish I could show you some videos like you do but it is agianst the corporation policy.

      @@ChrisMaj you are not kidding we got that machine new in 2009. That is the first time it has been purposefully been taking over 40% on the load meter. It was running about 80%

    I'm going to guess that after this bronze job was finished, you to go back to machining 4100 series steel. Thus, having to clean out the machine for the next half hour😂😂

    very good casting quality. please tell me, is it centrifugal casting, sand casting or chill casting?

      We don't do castings, but it looks like a sand casting. Permanent mold chill casting is better for high-production runs. Sand casting is lower cost in small batches.

    As always another excellent job Chris.Just curious when you do a one off jobs or an expensive piece of material like the one in the video do you trust the machine to cut on tolerance as programmed or leave some material and measure prior to finishing?Even though my cnc lathe is nowhere near in size to yours I still need to do offset adjustments until I get it right.Doing small parts is no problem just throw away the first part if not in tolerance.

      If it's a tight tolerance I always take two cuts, same depth of cut and same feed.

    How do you measure your tool offsets on this lathe?
    Do you get sick of shimming tools up to height on that tool post?

      Take a test cut, measure it, enter the dimension into your offset. The height of the tool post is exactly 1.25". Most of my tools are 1.25" or 1". For boring bars I already know what shim to add.

    Where would you buy such a boringbar (big diameter) today? Im on the search and im only finding anti-Vibration Tools over 50mm in dia. I want a 80mm bar, but not with anti vibration and yours looks like anything like that.

      Not the vtl, yet. On my lathe I had a small cover plate fly out. I've crashed and the tool pulled out the piece out of the chuck. Luckily it just fell out into the chip pan. Over the years I did have a few close calls.

    this is an NC lathe, right? How do you run parts like this using NC? You're not writing a program to go from start to finish, right? You gotta rough...then measure...then finish cut...

    id rather cut lead and or rubber over brass or cast iron any day.
    you cant cut rubber or lead on a cnc can you

      You could CNC turn lead, though I have no idea why you would want to.
      Rubber is also entirely possible to CNC, either by freezing and cutting with normal tools or by CNC grinding at room temperature.
