The "E34" BMW M5 was a special, iconic 1990s sedan -- and an excellent high-performance vehicle. Today I'm reviewing this E34 M5 to show you around a lesser-known, early BMW M car. I'll also show you the quirks and features of this M5, and I'm also driving this E34 M5 on the road.

To me the E34 is one of the most beautiful cars BMW ever built.
I'll stick with e38

It had the perfect proportions
E30** ;)
I’ll stick with the e39
I just wanted to point out something... 315 HP today may not be that much in a luxury sports sedan, but a year after this car was produced, the original Dodge Viper “only” got 400 HP from an 8-liter V10 engine. This BMW engine had 60% of the cylinders and 45% of the displacement, and still made 79% of the horsepower of the Viper. Power-per-liter in this BMW was *EXTREMELY* impressive for its day!
BMW is known for underrating their power figures, so that 315HP might be pretty conservative.
It still is today. I know that over 100hp/ liter has become kinda the standard, BUT you have to remember that this car doesn't have forced induction.
I have to get one and then maybe make it faster
340HP
The viper was an understressed engine. This m5 is overstressed. This is a design philosophy difference most people do not understand. AMGs benzes at the time had 7 litre v8s making 380-400hp too.

I remember having lots of fun with the windows control in the middle, people were always looking for a switch on the doors and when they didn't find any and asked me how to roll the window down, I said "You have to clap your hands"... And while they were claping I quietly pushed the button and they just stared and was like WTF xD

That interior is so beautifully designed and way ahead of its time. Wow!
LEGENDARY. I'm a 14 year old boy and I got myself on of these for my first car yesterday, it was someone else's project car before this and the original owner never finished, so he game me the car for free. There was about $8k - $14k value of parts already put in. The project car sat in a garage for 3 years. Put in the battery, fired right up. Some of these mods included HAMMAN body aero kit, adjustable coil overs, a sound system, a tac welded $300 radiator, new headlights, and an exhaust job. This was probably the last cool classic BMW model before it changed. Not saying newer models are bad, but if it were me to choose between a front opening hood and safety technology, well.... It's I great car to have. Doug Demuro is the first RUclips channel I searched for a review so I can possibly get in touch with some controls and some data. Thanks daddy Doug!

I love my stupid, slow, and clunky 88 volkswagen cabriolet.. because in spite of how bad or rough looking it is, it's so different that people are always looking and others compliment it.
Especially with how much trouble you get in for actually going 2020 fast... Get pulled over in California doing 100+ and you lose your license for 30 days, plus crazy fines and points etc.
This is exactly what I’ve been trying to tell people for the longest. With all these newer muscle cars out that all look the same and all run 11 flats off the lot. It’s just boring now. I get more compliments and head turns in my slow ass 14 sec 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, and once I’m done restoring it it’s going to be a beautiful classic car to see on the road.
redeclipzegsx exactly! Plus you can push them to the limit, have a boat load of fun as it’s you driving it and not computers, and still not have to worry about breaking the law! Plus, you will only get into conversations about it with people who you would actually want to talk to who will most likely have knowledge on the car as well.

Something that I'm sad Doug didn't know, but that honestly almost nobody seems to anyway, there's a way to hit a certain button combo on the driver information center next to the radio and see various information about various stats on the car that aren't displayed by the buttons that are there. If I remember right, you could push the 1000 and 10 buttons at the same time and enter a code to get it in to that mode. There were things in there like language setting, current fuel consumption in L/100km and Liters per Hour, fuel range, current speed, and a few different sensor outputs for troubleshooting. Really cool stuff!
The hidden menu. Pretty well known to E36 owners with the OBC. I like the UBatt test, which shows onboard voltage. Always handy to check if the alternator is still charging the battery.

Those light up keys were everywhere in Europe in the 80's and 90's. I miss them.
Why? You don't have to put the key in a key hole. The most cars brighten up the road, when you press the button on key. No need for a flashlight at the key either
Florian J * the majority of cars
@
Had the same key light in Sierra.
they don't seem to help much
@@BobThe9534 They were rubbish, but they were still everywhere.
Still looking good 29 years later.
There are a few more „features“ hidden there:
The rev counter range goes to 8000 reflecting the capabilities of the engine. All other gasoline E34 had a 7000 rpm counter.
The instant gasoline consumption Instrument in the tach was deleted for a oil thermometer because that delicate engine should not be raced before the oil was warm
Increased speedometer range but the car was limited to 250 kph. In Europe the M5 had a 300 kph speedometer, normal cars max 260 kph. That is a sign of the speeds that car could travel at. There is still a convention among major German brands to limit regular cars to 250 kph. That convention came up in the 80ies with cars like the M5 or 12 cyl 750 emerging that would go way beyond 250 / 155 mph and would likely have been driven on the Autobahn at that speed posing some danger to the average Beatle or Golf maxing out at half that speed.
In the glovebox you might have found a little flashlight that is being recharged while in its holder - a nice supplement to the key.
Actually there was an optional automatic a/c that had exactly those on/off buttons for air flow - separate sets for passenger and driver each. So the passenger could have his feet heated while the driver could have ice cold air blowing in his face.
Hidden in there is a „digital check control“ that notified the driver if a bulb in the right brake light was blown for example. It would also tell the driver to refill washer fluid and many more messages.
And so on...
🙏

2:33 ''A mandatory manual transmission'' - how times have changed...
UNn0rMified !
Manuals phased out because they’re hardly/if at all more efficient than modern automatics. Also they just don’t sell. No one buys manuals but then everyone complains when they go away.
And please don’t give me the anecdotal evidence that you drive a manual.
@@Sheridantank You say this as if we all don't know that. What we really want to know is why motherfuckers don't like the manual anymore, the three friends I've shown how to drive manual this summer have said they loved it, it's fun, and they see why I drive it
George
I learned recently as well and love it. It’s an enthusiast thing. If you’re not into cars and driving in an exciting way you’re not going to be into manuals.
There are still new cars that are mandatory manual transmission: i.e. Civic Type-R, Veloster N.
UNn0rMified !
Changed for the worse...

Not true. New M3 and M4 will continue to have manuals. As well as rear and awd!
Charlie Foxtrot the new m4 is still available as a manual
At least some automakers are giving us an option for a manual gearbox, to be specific, the Aston Martin Vantage AMR, 992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2S/4S, and.... uhhh.... umm..... idk. I actually struggled too think of even a handful of new manual car's, and that's just sad....
I'm still scratching my head when Doug puts focus on cupholders in literally every video. I'm German.
In Europe nobody gives a flying f... for cupholders. Those are only of some importance in huge continent countries with ridiculous speed limits.
Doug needs to drink. Maybe he is dehydrated ? Who knows ?
I don't really get it either. I'm always able to empty the cup before I continue the ride, I don't want half-emtpied cups anywhere in my car.
lol having cupholders is a godsend when you take any trip with little children
I'm german and own an E34 with no cupholders. Sometimes it gets annoying to not be able to store a water bottle in a convenient place when taking longer journeys.
Judging by the vast amount of knowledge to be gained simply by reading the comments, Doug really didn't know that much about the car.
He never really does..
e34s are insanely popular and sought after in the tuning car scene in Europe, mainly due to the bulletproof engines and drivetrain. The early 525s m50, first gen m60s (4L v8) and m5's s36, s38are incredibly tuning friendly and turned into real powerhouses with forced induction and e85.
I remember long ago when these were new, being passed on the highway by a BMW while the driver was on the phone... A corded one no less. I thought it was so cool...

I think the design of M5 e34 is just perfect, it looks just so lightweight and so sporty, and it doesn't screems "I'M M5!!!!"
The new one I actually like for looking so muscular, as it should. But this E34 has such a wonderful touch of elegance to that muscular nature that the modern ones just ignore.

"It's absolutely beautiful! The best looking M5, so it gets a 7 out of 10..."
6:03 what do you mean "germans from that era"? we still make fun of you for cupholders.
lukas haselmann Yeah but ashtrays were and are still way more common in European cars than American cars. Behind the wheel, Americans like to drink their water/coffee while Europeans like to smoke 🤷🏽♂️
As an European i cant understand why would you drink something in a car? We go to the bars and stuff to have a drink and chill. If we go on a longer drive then we usually keep our drinks in bottles.
lukas haselmann He wasn’t saying you’re hypocrites simply for having ashtrays in your vehicles as plenty of American cars did. He was bemoaning the “fat unhealthy American” stereotype you guys perpetuate via the cup holder when your German-built vehicles have ashtrays in every door - smoking isn’t exactly healthy either. You see the issue?
So he’s pointing out the cognitive dissonance of the chain smoking German driving around thinking, “Those unhealthy Americans with their cup holders!”
@@esrefpivcic4781 I don't see why you Europeans always feel the need to gloat about how you "don't drink in your cars" it's not a big deal to drink a bottle of water in your car. Or perhaps, I don't need the cupholder to drink out of, perhaps just to transport a drink safely.
Ešref Pivčić There’s plenty of times we stop at gas stations and get a drink to take home, and it’s convenient to have a cupholder to put it in rather than hold it in my lap.... We dont necessarily drink in the car that much, unless you’re a passenger. Or, you have some coffee you want to finish but you’re needing to head somewhere? Can set it in the cupholder and take it with you/sip out of it as well (after moving it from a mug to a bottle obviously)

7:44 actually, BMW's infotainment system started way earlier with the first 6 series back in 1975. It showed status of head light, tail light, brake light, light for number plate, oil level, coolant level and water fluid. While simultaneously being one of the most beatufil car ever built
Seb Vettel the M6 of the 80’s is my 2nd favorite BMW. My first is the 850 CSI of the early 90’s.
Yeah, that 1991 trip computer had basically the same features as my 1983 Toyota, nothing special there.
I had an `85 E28 with the overhead (over the rear view mirror) infotainment system. You had to press the "check" button every time you started the car so the vehicle knew you had checked all the potential codes before driving off. A bright "CHECK" light on your dash would flash until you pressed it. That on board computer was never broken on any of the 3 E28's I owned...made insanely well.
Actually, the first infotainment system was found on the 1986 Buick Riviera. It even had a touchscreen!
Jon C sure pal. But your Toyota probably didn’t even have a tilting steering wheel 🤣
Ah yes my favorite bmw
Thanks for doing this one it really took me back 😎 my late father was an arrow space engineer and purchased a new one in black in 91 I remember saying the same thing about the interior looking like a jet that thing was fast and definitely reliable it became my second car with 115 k miles on it in 98 i definitely wish I still owned it they are hard to find now I sold it in 2006 with 447k miles and was still running strong a thing about the key though if you held it in the door lock position for a few seconds the sun roof and windows would roll up 👍 that body style is definitely timeless in my opinion had fun watching this
If you pull the front bumper trim (the black stuff) you may find a signature from the team that hand built your car on the bumper.
The E34 has a notoriously bad interior...If you can find one with the all leather option it will be better but the door panels have a bad habit of de-laminating.
This particular M5 is unusual as the back seat is an actual bench like a normal E34. Usually the M5 had what we call the "bread box" which was a fixed box between the two seats, the two seats are then configured like mini bucket seats with the box in the middle serving as a arm rest. The box also held a sliding spring loaded drawer.
I know he mentions that it's fast for it's time. Actually the E34 M5 was the worlds fastest 4 door sedan at the time of it's production.
As mentioned the it's fairly similar looking to a "regular" 520 or 535 E34. The only differences you can tell from the outside are:
1. Rims, both the style as the turbine and "throwing star" are unique to the M5 as well as the size 17"
2. Badges...duh.
3. Car is a little lower to the ground and has different front and rear effects along with a slightly different side skirt.
4. Rear exhaust is stainless and slight larger if memory serves.
5. The rear truck license plate. Notice it has a plastic surround and you push the truck switch into it? Regular E34's don't have that.
If you're looking at one to buy the one I had for almost 20 years served me well and generally had preventive maintenance issues. I could get parts and turn a wrench which made it affordable until i had to move to an townhome with no garage and that eventually killed me keeping it. I got my parts from BMA auto which sold OEM parts...sometimes you got the BMW part with their bmw logo scrubbed off lol.
If anyone has questions about this car check out M5Board.com it has a E34 M5 forum that has tons of great info. Or ask a question here and i'll see if my foggy memory remembers.
This car is special (i'm biased since I own one). A few things to note on this car. The steering wheel is a 93 wheel, it was not offered in 91. The side mirrors on this car were upgrades. The white on white (vs white on black two tone was an option on white cars). The throwing stars did not come with this car originally in 91. This car is one of the first sedans to offer dual climate control.
Finally, they are still super expensive to maintain, correctly. Parts are rare.
Sounds like a pain in the arse car that'll cost more to maintain than the car is worth.
Good details
Too bad about the ugly body kit on this one
I found one of these for next to nothing 5 years ago. When I reached out to my mechanic about owning one he told me to walk. Because he knew I couldn't afford to maintain it. :( Oh well maybe one day I will own one of my dream BMWs. (:
I had one too. Hated it when people took off the “throwing star” portion center piece of the wheels. Looked hideous!

“Damn, they don’t make ‘em like THIS anymore”
DOES ANYBODY MAKE REAL SHIT ANYMORE
@@OscarvSerrano I ask because I'm not sure.
Bow in the presence of greatness
'cause right now thou hast forsaken us
That I'd even show up for this fake shit
The outboard seat belt buckles was a safety and convenience feature:
1 Didn’t have to reach over an elderly or young passenger to attach or release the belt;
2 After a bad accident, rescuers could get you out easier and faster as the buckle was right there when you opened the door
And I think the thinking was that ppl would move away from each other. Lambo did this too for a long time
I vividly remember the first time I saw one of these. It was a fully marked South Carolina state patrol car doing an aggressive U-turn on Wade Hampton Boulevard in Taylors, SC. That image will be permanently burned into my mind!!!
Doug the type of guy who makes us all voluntarily watch a 26 minutes advertisement for an auction
I was kinda having the same idea. How convenient. Now he can profit off ad revenue & auction percentages.

I hate doug he rose the value of these cars by telling his huge audience how great it is

@@samharris4680 I'm a very long time Doug fan. It's sad that you can't trust him to be objective in his reviews, now that he has an interest to talk up cars on that auction site.
Exactly my though, it seems like a conflict of interest if he starts reviewing cars that are listed on his website.
Owning an E34 Touring, even tho it's a 520i, just feels so great now that its getting more and more iconic
I own a 525ix, lurking monthly the car selling sites to check the value.
Had a manual 535i one of these... Thirsty but bulletproof. Loved that thing.
Loved how clean looking BMWs were in 90s. Great lines. Like the nearly complete body line that only pauses briefly for the front wheel arches.
The car chase scene in Ronin is what did it for me, it was love at first sight. After that I was into e39's because of Alex Roy.
I'm always on the lookout for another techno violet e34 Euro spec 👀
Miles Fox Daytona Violet 💜
For me it was the Audi S8.
@@patrickstonetree1 Or the Mercedes 6.3. So many choices!
“Clout” is the last word I’d expect Doug to say in his videos lol
Literally started dying when I heard that 😭
Clout is a legitimate word that’s been around.
Doug said clout at the EXACT moment that I read your comment. Crazy timing
And "Ilk" maybe too
Solid moment of this video
Thanks Dude! love this review. We can all pretty much agree, this would be something any BMW Fan would drool over to have.. Love This!
had a 525i for a short while, the thing I loved most was the shade in the back window, and rear seat buckles being on door side when you have small kids. I know, odd things to like, but they were neat features.
I remember like eight years ago when I was looking to buy an e34 M5. Here in Sweden you could get one for around $8000 for a sedan and $10,000 for a touring, and that was a nice example. Today, you cant find one for under $20,000. I havent seen any touring for sale here in Sweden for years now.
thats old way.. you could get something nice more than this you know that
So we’re not gonna talk about how the owner was getting 13.7 MPG 😂
Older cars get bad mileage because they weren't designed for the 10% ethanol gas we use today... Case in point, I used to have a little Ford Escort with a 5 speed... Before ethanol I was getting 35-37mpg highway... After the switch to ethanol, I was lucky to get 30.
I owned one. Ac on and driving around town 8.9 mpg
He was driving very carefully.
You're gonna be going about 2000-3000 rpm even in 6th gear while cruising. That's sky high compared to modern standards, and you have to be around 4000 rpm to get the torquey bit of the engine to overtake.
Felix Chan You definitely don't need to hit 4K to overtake in this car. I overtake like that in my M30-powered 535i with only 2/3 the power.
I always liked the e34, I was a Motor Mechanic and an inspection 2 service would take most of the day to perform. Great looking car!
Surprised that Doug didn't comment on the glorious sound coming from that engine! Worth the price of admission right there!
I’ve always loved this model. Especially, as an estate (wagon). This was a perfect tribute video to an iconic legend. Thanks.
Finally a E34, Im so happy, nicelly done Doug, had to make a pause at work just to see this!!!

Thanks for another great video Doug. I didn't even know this model existed.
"so that your kids can smoke...." this guy cracks me up sometimes
It’s amazing how beautiful their cars were back then, compared to how they look today.
@A real bisexual petrol-head what a stupid comment
I also like the E34 generation the most, even though I have E39 now.... E24 and E34 are the best looking BMW imho, but it's difficult to find one in a good shape..
Btw the rear seatbelts mounted on the middle was a good idea, it prevents the rear passengers from bumping their heads to each other in a case of crash from the side..
My friend bought a e34 520i for 3000€. Hes driving this since 2015 without any problems. In Germany these are very common.
The other "Ugly wheels" he refers to, were the only ones offered in 1991 as I recall. At least in the USA anyway, as I recall
