This is arguably the best 5 series ever. I had the privilege of owning a 1995 535i and it was such a drivers car, yet you could cover huge mileage without any fuss. I would probably trade my left ball for a M5 E34 now.
I've driven the E34 M5 countless times and its a blast every time. Nice examples are getting harder to find so if youre considering one, just go for it.
Well done! Everything you have said about the E34 M5 is accurate. I truly feel the same way about mine. Not many people cam say that they own they dream car and I'm so grateful that I'm one of those people that can. I hope you can do a piece about the E28 M5.
Had a uni black limo in 1994/95 and I LOVED IT!!! I had it modified by MK Motorsport. It sounded like a race car. 18 inch MK wheels - people freaked out back then. I also installed a huge stereo. Alpine 7618r, Alpine Amps and speakers and a Pyle 38 cm Sub. The bass was so strong it ripped out the lock inside the boot lid and the BMW dealer needed to weld it. Then bought a Touring in 97 more or less by accident. I wish I would have kept the Touring. Blue metallic, two tone light and dark grey full leather including dash and all the other stuff. Double sun roof - they opened in opposite direction. The car would be worth $150k today since they only made 891.
E34s are awesome cars, but if you really want to experience the pinnacle, it's not an M5, M5 3.8/6spd, or the M540/540M sport. It's the Alpina B10 Bi-turbo. Fastest production sedan in it's day. Less than 500 made. Rated at over 400hp and 450ft/lbs, with an interior unparalleled in the early 90s. There's a reason they're all photographed in front of planes. They have low end power and scream on the top end. I've owned several E34s over the years, with plenty of chances to buy and keep any other E34, but stuck with my version of a turbo 535, for nearly 30 years.
Your last two episodes have taken me out of my base (I didn't want to write comfort zone, because I'm not uncomfortable with this). These truly were driver's cars then, and as you said, they started to lose that by the late 90s and drifted towards being a pure status symbol. It's a shame, these were a tribute to the 2002, and an evolution of performance. Thank you as always sir, true pleasure to watch your tests ~ Chuck
Thanks Chuck - we mixed it up this season. A little domestic, some Euro and a bit of JDM. They're all great cars and each with own distinct personality.
Great video! There is nothing like an older M car. I am not a fan of every BMW these days having an M badge 330M, and M3 are not the same things, the M now seems to stand for "Marketing", says the grumpy old guy with an 89 M5 ;-)
I reallybwish I would have had the fore sight to buy an E34 M5 back between 2003(I was in Germany from '03-'06) and 2011 or so back when these were overlooked, more reasonabably priced and most people were all after the E39 and E60 M5. I am sure there is no way I could possibibly afford one now. Maybe if I could find a solid E34 of any type reasonably cheap I could make a hot rod out of it as an M5 tribute. Maybe a 2JZ or Atlas 4200 and a CD09 manual would get it done. Perhaps I could supercharge it to preserve the sound rather than a turbo. I bet an E34 M5 without a limiter with the right gearing could hit 170mph, I managed to hit 258km/hr with an E60 520i 6spd manual rental car on the autobahn in 2004 and that only had like 170hp 2.2L I6, I had to wind it up going down a hill on the A63 from Kaiserlautern to Frankfurt tonget it up that fast, on level ground I think it was done around 230-235km/hr so it too some skill to get there but that huge underpowered thing did it. An S38 with 335hp unlimited should have 170-180mph, 270-300km/hr in the bag.
Damn, I should have bought one of these when they were relatively cheap. I’m settling for putting the S38 engine from one of these into my E12 5-series.
@@drivebigmuscle8080 Also, we are moving to an E28 rear subframe and differential. We’re in the tear down phase now. Putting the new stuff on starts soon.
Musto! They’re the same wheels called M System! The turbine covers were M System 1 and the throwing stars were System 2. Also you can take the covers off and just expose the beautiful forged wheels. But you are correct, people are sleeping on these cars. Find a shop that can take care of the s38, do an SLS delete, and find a car with the rear bucket seat option! Miss mine everyday 😂
Nah get the SLS rebuilt if it needs to be done. Got mine rebuilt and if you want long term value keep original features. Not to mention sls delete also requires work on the steering pump for the hydraulic fluid return as the the steering pump powers the sls system.
@nickw4783 depends where you are nagengast in Poland did mine but that was pretty brexit. If you're over the pond I think there's a us company that does them. Afaik the return shipping is what kills getting them rebuilt at nagengast as they're obviously heavy to send
Fantastic cars but you gotta remember, BMW has always built cars to meet customer demands and customer demands have changed, the new generation aren’t interested in analog they actually like all the new tech cars have now, boomers are pretty much out of the market, us genexers are gobbling up these cars to restore/modify etc, trying to relive our youth, older millennials were the last to appreciate analog, after them it’s gone forever, once we’re gone all this will be history.
Earlier world-market cars also had 315 hp (DIN), barely any less than the US-market variant. Later cars with the 3.8 litre engine had 340 hp, but weren't available everywhere. Shame, as it was incrementally better than the earlier versions, everything that was good about the 3.6 but bigger brakes, suspension and torque.
Thanks - on this season of TESTED we've opened it up to more than just muscle - cars to follow are a Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC, Chevrolet Custom/10 and a Ferrari 308 GTS so stay tuned!
@@drivebigmuscle8080 I've been subscribed to Hemmings for years & I watch almost all your videos. Although I'm older than Mike Musto, I think we'd get along just because of our shared love of cars. As for my comment about Lotus, I've always found the people who put them down, have NEVER driven one. The Elise is thrilling & the Exige is nearly a "code brown". i.e. bring a change of underwear. LOL
@@drivebigmuscle8080 TYVM for your reply Mike !!! But I think you could be surprised by how roomie the Elise is despite it's small size over all. It is a nice superficial review of the car. It would be much more interesting, when underneath the car already, to spend a minute or two more comparing it to the next gen cars and why it feels better driving on the edge. Further more, you should not mistaken the M88 engine out of M1 with S38. Even US E28 did not come with M88. S38 may be considered as an evolution but is not "essentially the same engine as in the M1 car". That was a faux pas, especially when these informations are readily available upon searching M88 S38 differences. S38 is not a bad engine, but for an enthusiast, given the choice, I am pretty sure one would choose M88 over S38 any day, any time. It suffices to hear the engines at idle speeds, let alone at high rpms, to understand why the M88 is more special and should never be stated as "essentially the same" to S38. E24 and E28 with M88 are very much sought after and have risen in price drastically only on behalf of M88 in place of S38.
I dunno those turbo fans have a ton of character and there's only one era they could have come from. Sure the throwing star wheels do look better but they're a tad generic.
Host guy need to learn about the car before making a video, instead of spitballing nonsense as he goes. Comparing a sharpie to an aftermarket Eibach sway and telling to look "how thick that is" because sportscar is kindergarten level. Also, Turbine M-system wheels are the greatest wheels for E34.
One of the most beautiful sedans that ever hit the road! 😍
It's truly a wonderful sports sedan
E34 the car that made me fall in love with bmw.
str8 talk. i have an E34 525i 94 model. the dream car is the M5. wow. will slowly make mine look like a proper M5 but i'll just turbo the m50b25tu
I've always loved e34s. I've had two a 1995 525i 5spd US spec and a 1995 540i 6spd. Great cars.
The 540i is great machine - tough to find nowadays though...
In my opinion the best looking m5 👍
I have to go with the e39, but the e34 is a close second.
E60 takes the second place 😊
Back in the 90th i had an e34 m5 3.8 in daytona violett it was maybe the best car that i ever owned

That's a serious trade right there...
I'd take an E34 vs the latter like E36, E39, & E46! Thats right! I said it. Fight me 🤼🏽♂️
big time my man, same here! proudly own an e32 5 speed manual euro with m30 engine

Nah... I think enthusiasts will always have a place as will these cars. However finding competent technicians to work on them, that will be the issue.
The dashboard, and much of the interior and exterior design, belongs in the Guggenheim museum.
