    Hi,
    I think it's the 1st time for me writing a comment in RUclips, but I felt I needed to say you guys a huge thanks for making my firepit build so easy.
    I usually suck at building something and never done such a big project but with the help of your videos and attention to detail I actually enjoyed the whole process. Not to mention the end result is beyond my expectations. All my friends are just stunned and don't believe I've done it all by myself.
    Got a bargain with pavers and other materials from around neighbours so the whole patio/firepit (14 feet in diameter) cost me only around 400$. If I hired someone to do this it would most likely would be around 3k.
    I can see you guys are truly enjoying what you are doing so please keep sharing your knowledge and a warm greetings from Latvia! ✌️

    Yeah If you want to maintain a certain diameter around something this is the best way. One trick I personally love and use is taking a nice non kinked garden hose and laying out a curve. If I need I will use stones to hold it down for hard bends and I will draw out a line using the hose. Cut to the right of the line and shave down if need be but you will get good and I have legit been able to freestyle a few patio curve cuts.

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Год назад

      For sure, I always like to lay out the border so I can truly see what it will look like before cutting. I have seen some guys use that hose trick, not a bad idea. But like you said, the most important part is being good with a saw so you can freestyle when the mark isn't too good. ✌

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  2 месяца назад

      Thank you! You can either set the pavers on mortar to adhere them to the pad or you could screed an inch or so of bedding stone over the concrete and lay the pavers on that. But you don't want to just lay them on the pad directly.

    Awesome vid and work! You guys make me want to visit Boston. love you guys. So with this method, i watched the previous vids you don't have to do any compacting?

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! We love it here in Massachusetts. As for compacting, once we reach our subsoil height and spread a thin layer of 3/4 stone over it, we plate compact that 2-3 times in different directions. Once you have done that, all you need to do is lay fabric and backfill over it. For a foot traffic application, no additional compaction is needed until you do polymeric sand at which point you are compacting the pavers into the bedding stone and settling the poly sand down into the joints. Hope that explains it! ✌

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Год назад +1

      We always lay out the border pavers on top of the main pavers exactly how we want it and then trace the outside of them. That's how we always trace our curves. And thank you, we always try to have a good time. ✌

    Really awesome design!!! I have a blank canvas back yard and looking to do this myself with a buddy or two. Is there a website or program that is used to design the pattern if you put in the stone dimension? I was considering doing just a pea gravel with boarder for my firepit but after seeing this wow It's a lot more work but the end result is phenomenal. The results speak for themselves that patients, planning and hard work pays off.

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Год назад

      Thank you! Pea stone and a border is certainly a good option that will save money but I definitely agree that this is a much more inviting area to hang out on. There are 3d design websites / programs but I don't use any. The pavers are just a 3 piece design and I lay them randomly while looking out for a few things to avoid. It is a lot of work but is very rewarding when it is complete! ✌

    May I give you a sweet tip for marking out your soldier. Go buy yourself 4-5 sets of universal tent poles from a sporting goods store then hook them all together and bend them to the shape desired and use your hollands to hold down the tent poles in multiple places then mark it. You will absolutely love doing it this way waaaay more than using Hollands laid out. You can move it and manipulate it this way much faster and easier. It’s worth the investment I promise

    • @huckwild6464

  • @blackacreage4868
    @blackacreage4868 8 месяцев назад +1

    Great video! Question: why not go with a 7” diamond blade on a circular saw instead of that giant rig? I know all the hardscapers use them but given you’re only cutting through about 2.5” why not just use the smaller circ saw (which has a built in depth gauge)? Any reason a DIY’r like me should rent a big gas saw instead of going with the circ saw for 1 job?

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! Although a 7" blade is big enough to cut through pavers, a circular saw does not have close to enough power to be efficient. This big saw has an insane amount of power and rips right through these pavers. It may be heavier but it saves a lot of time. Depending on how many cuts you have, I would recommend renting a big saw. Unless you only have a handful, then you can get away with a small saw, just not fun.... LOL ✌

      I know that can save time, but I find it less accurate. Those conduit pieces are to bendy and don't give a true perfect radius on a circle patio like this, in my opinion. ✌

    do you compact over the pavers when using the clean gravel base and no sand? Do clients ever have you cut all the border pavers for soldier course? What average per Sq foot are you getting on the paver parts of installs?

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Год назад

      Yes I do compact the pavers while poly sanding. I don't ever need to cut every border paver. On tight radius border situations, we do. But most of the time it is not necessary. I typically charge $20-$25 per sq ft for pavers. ✌

    Hi I really have been enjoying your vids . I live in NH and have a small landscaping co.. (Plus my RUclips channel not landscaping ) ... I have done many hardscape projects 10 years ago but just been doing landscaping due to employee shortage .. so I have a customer that wants a patio. its gonna be square and 650sf (only hard cuts is around the firepit) . all digging can be done with a skid and all materials can be brought to the patio site pretty easily .. so my Question is what is your going rate per square foot for a full install ? prices have changed in 10 years .. I was thinking around $17sf or $18sf Pavers are $ 7sf retail , Genest Is that too low too high ?..I hope you can answer my question.. thanks for your time .... I'm from Mass but now in NH

      I tried that once, I also used the plastic edging a few times. It certainly is quicker, but not as accurate. With laying the pavers out, you know for sure what it’s going to look like..

    Man you answered my question for 2 yrs. How in the world you mark the pavers and keep the water from washign the marker off. So you mark it score it with saw, then turn water on.. #please dont judge me, im a green belt with this paver isht..lol

      When we go to install the border, we have to add chip stone as we lay the border. Any smaller cuts that shifted from the cutting gets picked up and re laid on additional chip stone, then set into place. ✌

      I do that for some curves, but I really like laying the pavers out to see exactly how the radius will look. A little more time, but more accurate in my opinion. Than once you pick them up to cut, you have exactly what you need for border pieces stacked up next to you. ✌

      Totally agree, this situation was trying to get a perfect circle so I wanted to be precise. I would definitely use conduit on radius cuts that don’t have to be perfect circular. It’s great for that ✌🏻

    Do you need to be concerned about the effects of FROST MOVEMENT with your outside edges in colder climates? I think you said that you construct a cement mortar retainer ring to keep the outside stones from moving outwards over time (instead of using the standard plastic borders with the big spikes). I see you are installing in the Central Massachusetts area, where you would get a moderate amount of frost. I am in a significantly colder climate, so I am thinking that your cement mortar border might not be advisable in my area, as it might become quickly fragmented by the greater expansion from the colder climate?

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Год назад

      I am not concerned about the freeze thaw cycles. With the base prep I did for this and do for all my paver installs, I believe it will withstand the winter elements for many years.... It is all about using clean, crushed stone for water to travel through freely and it also has open spaces in between the stones for water to expand into when water does freeze in it. That helps prevent heaving during very cold conditions.
      Here is a base prep video I made which explains my method in detail, it will help you understand what I mean 👉ruclips.net/video/ChaJe3JqD6I/видео.html

      @@TheChristianHardscaper Thanks for the response!
      I guess another key aspect is that you are using the POLYMERIC SAND, which I imagine will result in LESS moisture making its way BETWEEN the stones where it could freeze and EXPAND OUTWARDS ... and for the moisture that does manage to make it inbetween the stones ... with your HPB fine gravel underneath, the moisture has more room to largely escape to BELOW the stone where it would do less potential damage if/when it freezes.
      And also when laying stone over a larger area, with potentially less moisture absortion occuring through the polymeric sand, one needs to plan where all the excess water is going to disapate to ... (i.e. plan for better drainage at the lower/outer edges, such as courser drainage gravel, laid to a deeper depth, along with weeping tile to carry the excess water away to a safe area.)
      I am very happy to have discovered your videos. Thank you for putting up such quality content!

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Год назад

      No problem, and you seem to have a good understanding of the entire method, that's awesome. The only thing to make clear is that any water that may get under the pavers, which will not be much as you have explained.... it will permeate into the subsoils and drain freely. I tell people all the time to not forget that water naturally drains into the ground, the clean stone under the pavers does nothing but help the water get there quicker. So unless you have very heavy clay sub soil or you are installing in an area where there is drainage issues already, you don't need any drainage pipes or anything to divert the water, it will just permeate into the soil little by little.
      Thanks for the support, glad you like the channel! ✌

    why lay out your headders when you can chalk mark the paving off a pivot point, chase the saw through the laid blocks and then bed the headders. you are double handling the headders.

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Год назад

      I have addressed this in the video and in other videos. Using a pivot point off the firepit or using flexible conduit to mark it, is not as accurate. Laying the pavers out to exactly where you want them before marking is the most accurate way. I never said it was the quickest. I am not interested in competing for the fastest install. I see a ton of guys doing that, then when I look at their work, it shows that they only care about speed. Not me, all set.

    I thought you couldn’t add the polymeric sand on wet ground? So if you wet cut do you have to wait a few days to come back and spread sand ?

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  Год назад

      Correct, if you cut with water, you need to wait for the pavers to dry. But you usually aren't ready for polymeric sand at the time of cutting anyway.
