I'm 67 and always loved the outlaws. Glad to see today's generation still enjoying them. Freeborn Man is another good one, as well as their version of Ghost Riders in the Sky, There Goes Another Love Song and Hurry Sundown. Great reaction
@@leongerek9714this is song is indeed a tribute to rock stars who’d died, but not Skynyrd. The song came out two years before the Skynyrd plane crash.
The 70s were such an explosive musical era in so many directions - Southern Rock, Glam, Rock, Punk, New Wave, Reggae, Ska, Disco, Jazz Fusion, Heavy Metal and probably another dozen genres were out there for people with different memories. Thanks for keeping them present, Lee
One of the Baddest Jams in the Land. Top tier. Never ever gets old. 49yrs later and I still dance my ass off. Southern Rock Anthem is an understatement.
Fun reaction. And I love all of it and how well it all works together, but I have to say at least lately when I listen to it including right now, I think it's the bass guitar line that ultimately affects me the most over the long haul. It's just stupid in its range from simple driving support, to throwing in all kinds of difficult busy stuff, but it's in service to making it kick, and adding some funk at a really high tempo, and making people want to dance. And his tone is so well matched for this mix.
There's a live version at nearly 15 minutes... They are from Tampa Fla hence the nickname Florida's Guitar Army . The Allman Bros from Daytona and Skynerd, Molly Hatchet, 38 special, Blackfoot all from Jacksonville Fla ( my hometown) Yeah there's something in the water down here !!!
Omg This was my first concert I was 16. Right before they played Green Grass and High Tides, the band call there crew in to throw huge garbage bags full with weed. Then someone said into the mike “you all take some and pass on back to you neighbors.” Everyone including me was lighting up and sat back and enjoy the show. I can wait to see your reaction Lee, thank you in advance. Oh I’m now 60 😆
Every great Southern Rock band needs a Guitar Opus, and this is the one for Outlaws. Saw the "Florida Guitar Army" twice, and of course, they closed the show with this number both times. And stretched it out to about 15-18 minutes, which was great. Three Guitars and the Bass player all standing at the front of the stage, just wailing away, amazing and fun.
"Green Grass & High Tides" !!! Glad you found this one. I went to all of the concerts that came to town for 4 years in the mid 70's and the Outlaws were one of them. Fantastic.
Ahhhhh..The Outlaws. Fab band from Florida! Their albums are all fantastic. Henry Paul more recently revived the band and they recorded to VERY strong albums titled ' It's About Pride' and 'Dixie Highway'. Perhaps try 'Hurry Sundown next, but there's oodles of great material. Dig in,bro...T
I had this on my mixed tape when I drove to Ft. Lauderdale for spring break in 1978. Probably listened to it 50 times driving down 95 from Jersey and back. Kicks butt and royally at that.
Here I was, 20 years old, working in a back kitchen in Seattle, listening to Jon's cassette tape of "Southern Fried Rock" -- his own compilation, and listening to this track and thinking I just heard the epitome of that Southern Rock sound.
"Green Grass and High Tides" had the misfortune of being released about 7 months after "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. It has often been referred to as a copy cat, which really isn't the case.
One of my favorites! I got turned on to this song while at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, in 1970! I must've spent 100 quarters playing this song at the EM Club..... 👍
Went to a jam concert called “The Round Up” in Philly back 1980 or 81? , and it had The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, 38 Special, The Marshall Tucker Band and Allman Brothers headlining. Everyone was there from suburban kids to Hells Angels. Hotter than hell in the enormous JFK Stadium (100,000).
Saw them at Giants Stadium on June 17th 1979. The lineup was Poco, The Outlaws. Todd Rundgren’s Utopia and the headliner was Boston. Great show all around.
Great song, great band! Without a doubt, one of the best rock ‘n’ roll jams in music history! Next, check out Ghost Riders and There Goes Another Love Song! ✌️
This thing was originally done in the studio in only one take. When they were done they said, "print it, If it ain't broke don't fix it." This is great to play in the jukebox because it's 1. Very good. 2. Long as hell Can you believe they only had two "hits"? SHAME
Huey thomasson said...I wrote that song in St. Augustine, Florida. We went to a cookout on the beach and everybody forgot to bring their guitars. I was standing by the ocean and there was a breeze and the words kept coming to me. It’s about all the rock stars I liked that died had come back and were playing a show just for me. Like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. And eventually more of course.
Great reactions to the Outlaws big hit, GGaHT. The lead off song was played and promoted on the radio (AM + FM), "Thete Goes Another Love Song". I liked it and bought the album and Side 1 shows the diversity of the band w different vocalists and styles. "Hurry Sundown" is another tune worth hearing. Guitar is stellar throughout. Hurry Sundown might be on 2nd LP.
You should check out Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See". They were sort of a mix of southern rock with more adventurous influences. There's a live version that's well known and though primitively made, it really captures the vibe well.
Since you wanted it to run on longer... look for some live versions. They have some epically long live versions that keep it going with the change ups. Got to see them live once later in their years, great show
Lynyrd Skynyrd came out with "Freebird" in 1973. The Outlaws said, a year or two later, "Hold my Beer." .....As a side note, I saw these guys in 1978 at the Warner Theatre in Wash., DC in 1978. They opened for Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. A 'Top Ten' concert from my lifetime. I don't go to any anymore so it shall remain.
This song is their Free Bird. Some other ones worth checking out, Hurry Sundown, Freeborn Man, There Goes Another Love Song and Ghost Riders In The Sky.
1975 concert tour the Outlaws, Headeast - never been any reason, ZZTop Fandango- I Heard It On The X - Tush - Mexican Blackbird 😂 I smoke weed everyday
Great song Joel. Always luv this song. 70s were guitar solos. Southern rock had at least two guitarists and/or two drummers. My favorite Southern band is 38 special
A great band. A blend of rock, country and a little bit of bluegrass. Brings back memories of being in high school. Friday night going to 7-11 to meet up and find out where the parties were. I think it's their best tune.
You couldn't beat 1970's Southern Rock.
The guitar jams speak for themselves.
I'm 67 and always loved the outlaws. Glad to see today's generation still enjoying them. Freeborn Man is another good one, as well as their version of Ghost Riders in the Sky, There Goes Another Love Song and Hurry Sundown. Great reaction
You know that freeborn man is a bluegrass song so was knoxville girl.

I always thought this was their “Freebird”.
I can totally see that. It's definitely a fire storm of guitar solos lol I love it
It was written as a tribute to the members of Leonard Skinnerd who just died in an airplane crash

Yes the 70s was the decade for the best of just about every musical genre there was. Everything was at the apex of creativity.
I doubt there's ever been a greater musical decade in human history than the 70's.

BRING'EM BACK ALIVE.
They are like a freaking machine with that rhythm.
Such an awesome song. The guitar playing is next level. Not just the style and technique but that TONE. Fantastic.
All 3 lead guitarists are trading off solos on this one.
Fantastic players!

Yes. Bradenton Fla. First saw them there in 69
Some of the best guitar playing EVER!!!!!!
You want to blown away? Watch the live version of this. Like 24 minutes long. The guitar army. Two drummers. Incredible 👍👍
Only one drummer on this recording. But the band did later use two drummers.

One of my earliest concerts as well. They were touring with Kansas, it was a great show!!
Darn. I saw them in San Bernardino and we had to bring our own.
They were called the guitar army for a good reason

Fantastic in concert, trading leads and then the three of them lined up playing together! Thanks Lee, glad you ran into the Outlaws!
Great song

Why is Joel constantly hangin out in my record collection ??
🤣🤣🤣 I don't know - but, I'm GLAD HE IS!!! :) You got GOOD TASTE!! :)
We must have an overlapping catalog. I still have over 600 LP’s in my garage!
1st concert in '76. Montrose opened, The Outlaws, THEN Lynyrd Skynyrd! What a show.
I actually saw them twice; two lead guitarists and the singer played rhythm. Good times!
Incredible band, saw them live in the mid seventies in Syracuse, NY, along with the Doobie Brothers, so ya, I'm old but still rocking.
Florida Guitar Army!!
I always thought that this was their answer to FREEBIRD
My first concert too. They opened for The Doobie Brothers in '75. I was 14.
Hard to believe this was a big radio hit. Ah...the good old days of FM.
ANOTHER SICK ASS KICK ASS SOUTHERN ROCK BAND !!! 😍😍😍Saw them a few times , GREAT SHOWS!!!
I had this on my mixed tape when I drove to Ft. Lauderdale for spring break in 1978. Probably listened to it 50 times driving down 95 from Jersey and back. Kicks butt and royally at that.
Blend rock, country and blues + more guitar...a new genre was born. TBOT! Grateful!

Im in my 50s and i only heard about the Outlaws a couple of years ago.
It's because of your reactions to songs like this that has your channel rapidly growing.....Rock on. Brother!!!
Skynyrd Allman brothers Marshall Tucker and Outlaws the ultimate concert.
Saw them open a four-act bill in Oakland (a Day on the Green) with them, Santana, Skynyrd, and Frampton on 4 July '77. My 20th birthday.
Awesome tune for sure.
Free Bird from Lynyrd Skynyrd got most of the airplay for long guitar jam songs, but many folks like this one just as much.
My favorite Outlaws song! Loved your reaction.
My favorite song in high school. I saw them live in Connecticut on Memorial Day, 1979.
Saw them in San Diego at Balboa Park. They opened for Marshall Tucker and The Allman Brothers.
One of the ultimate guitar solos of that era!

Southern Rock defines sex, drugs and rockn roll. When you first heard this you knew the beers would be flowing.
