Jeff Healey is Canadian and he is blind. He lost his eyesight to cancer when he was around a year old. His father gave him a guitar when he was three and because he was so little he couldn't reach the strings so he put it on his lap and he became comfortable playing it that way. He became friends with Stevie Ray Vaughan. Unfortunately the cancer came back and he passed when he was in his forties. Brilliant guitarist!
Sadly, we need to use the past tense, as Jeff Healey died from lung cancer at age 41 in 2008. Obviously cancer was a terrible scourge to his family. RIP
Terrific reaction to one of Canada's greatest for sure. This isn't the Jeff Healey Band though, this is Jeff with a bit of a star-studded lineup, with Marcus Miller on the bass, the legendary Dr. John on piano and Omar Hakim on drums. This was a one-off TV gig, but they all cook like hell here for sure. Great choice - peace and love from Canada ☮
This will be an experiece. Jeff is considered to have been one of the best jazz blues guitaists ever. He plays with SRV (Stevie Ray) on Little Sister live. Its just amazing
A blind guitar virtuoso! I would be ashamed to think there's ANYTHING I CANNOT DO, after admiring, in the example of Jeff Healey, what is possible for a human being to accomplish! Just...never, ever give up!
Oh, another killer live performance from Jeff that you would love, with his band, is As The Years Go Passing By - pure blues magic and Jeff is frikking sublime.
Born in Toronto, Ontario,Healey was raised in the city's west end. He was adopted as an infant; his adoptive father was a firefighter. When he was almost one year old, Healey lost his sight due to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes. His eyes had to be surgically removed, and he was given ocular prostheses.
This weekly show in the 1980s was hosted by sax player David Sanborn. Jeff just used David's backup band for this appearance. Marcus Miller was a fairly famous bassist back in the day. And on drums Hakim something or other.
In 61 years I've never heard anyone play this good and with as much feeling! Some of this you can learn, much of it you have to be gifted with! Jeff was gifted!
His cover of " while my guitar gently weeps" is unbelievable. The day Jeff passed away , it came on my truck radio as I left work & I just knew we hd lost another great one.
Who you saw in the video are Jeff Healey, Marcus MIller (Bass), Omar Hakim (Drums), Dr. John (Keys). Four absolute monster players there. Marcus Miller and Omar are big jazz musicians. Dr. John, look him up, great music from him. Not to mention, David Sanborn was the person introducing Jeff. I used to watch this show in the late 80s (I think it was on Sunday nights) and they would have big name people on every show. Look up Night Music videos on RUclips.
Nice reaction :) Healey did a version of the Beatles, 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' (Written by George Harrison) that Harrison liked so much he got his friend Jeff Lynn from ELO and they played acoustic guitar and did the backing vocals on it
JEFF HEALY (Canadian artist) was a genius bluesman and his playing on the recumbent guitar (technically much more difficult to play than the pedal steel and lap steel) was always breathtaking. Sadly, cancer too quickly deprived us of his masterful talent. Thanks.
About 20 years ago Jeff had a club in Toronto called Healeys. Every Sunday he would open in the afternoon playing jazz, blues and the American song book. The place was always packed with the older set (like us). We appreciated the atmosphere and the early start.
Cool to see you doing Jeff. To the day I die, he will be my Dating Game answer for favourite musician ever. Changed the way I listened to music and expanded my listening genre. I used to hate blues. I cried when he passed. Additionally, Jeff was house musician in the original movie Roadhouse with his main bandmates. You can find a great upbeat song ‘When the night Comes Falling’ from the movie which comes with some great guitar solos. Also as an aside, if you haven’t checked them out yet, if you want a real jaw dropper, check out Walk off the Earth and a video they made years ago covering Outkast’s “Hey Ya”. Toronto Canada has produced some greats.
Saw Jeff Healey Band open for ZZTop in SF at the Cow Palace decades ago. He stood most of the show and the bassist would shadow him and bump him away from the edge of the stage & towards the mic The band was so good
He was great. Lol played the bar in the King Edward hotel in Calgary often in the 80's. Unfortunately i never saw him then. But i did see him in the early 2000nds. Incredible how he plays.
I love your reactions Jeff is one of the finest musicians to ever walk the face of the earth and I'll fight the man who says different much love from Saskatchewan Canada 🙂
I loved the look on your face, It was the look of pure happiness. So happy to see young people enjoying older musicians and how utterly talented they were.
I lost my voice at his concert in 1984 or maybe 86 i think it was. Anyhow I was front row telling him he was better than Hendrix at the top of my lungs. While he's playing with his teeth and the rest of the jimi gimics. Another great party that day.
You should check out Jeff heely and Stevie Ray Vaughan doing look at little sister another good Stevie Ray Vaughan to check out is Texas flood live at the El mocambo , RIP Jeff Healy & SRV 🎵🎶🎤🎸🐐💯🙏
He sings like Jimi Hendrix and plays kinda like him, too. Music is color blind and that's what's so cosmic about it. Marcus Miller is outstanding. One of my favorite people full stop. His work with Miles Davis is iconic. His work with the Metropole Orkestra at the 2013 Edison Jazz World Awards was jaw dropping. Oops. Sort of veered off of Jeff a bit. He is incredible, truly.
Glad you got to this one. One of my favs. Ass kickin' group: Jazz rock greats Marcus Miller(bs) and Omar Hakim (dms) and of course Dr. John on piano. Even the host of the show Dave Sanborn was a great sax player. Think you'd also like Jeff playing with SRV: "Look at Little Sister" Not as wild as this but nice to see the mutual appreciation
Jeff's parents gave him a guitar as a present when he was a kid. Since he was blind, he had no frame of reference as to the normal way to play it. So he taught himself guitar by just laying it across his lap.
My ex husband went to the blind school in Brantford with Jeff. He was a very dow to earth. When his parents gave him his first guitar he was too small to hold it properly, so found it more comfortable playing o his lap. His blindness had nothing to do with it. My ex also plays the guitar, but in the traditional way.
@L33Reacts Jeff Healey Band was in an 80s movie called Roadhouse. They weren't a major part of the film but because they did a fantastic version of The Doors Roadhouse Blues.
SRV discovered Jeff Healey when he was playing in Canada and invited Jeff on stage with him. There is a great recording of them doing Look at Little Sister. Jeff Healey was in town playing at another venue the night SRV ended up in the fateful helicopter crash. Jeff had seen him play that last night and they rushed over to commiserate over SRV’s death. 😢
That was a treat. Jeff Healey deserves to be known and recognized as one of the greats. I've seen two other blind guitarists who play lap-style like that and it does make sense since you can play with all five fingers. Playing with one's teeth ("tooth picking"?) is a Blues thing that goes back to street musicians of the '30s. Jimi re-introduced it. One of the things that I enjoy about this channel is how musicians that I've been digging for decades are new to our host. Might I suggest checking out that "Ragtime Dandy" - Dr. John. In his early Voodoo period he recorded a song called "Walk On Gilded Splinters" that you might enjoy. Humble Pie also do long jam live version of it.
Are you seriously saying that you didn't know this was a blind man singing "see the light shining in my eyes?" Blind from birth, all Canadians know that Jeff was a legend. So did everyone else in this all star band.
Jeff Healey and his band are the House Band in the original movie with Patrick Swayze "ROADHOUSE" you need to check that out sometime. I was able to see Jeff live in the front row once, a thrill of a lifetime.
Omar effing Hakim on drums man. Marcus miller on bass...oooh man, and then Dr John on keys. Cmon, Jeff is a legend but this band was next level for this one song. Lets not forget he is introduced by multi Grammy winning David Sanborn. i know you are young but these guys are legends...all of them. Glad you recognize their genius though...well done
Check out How Blue Can You Get live at Nottenden. That was Omar Hakim, Marcus Miller and Dr. John backing up JH, on this one. Night Music was a Friday night show (started around midnight?) that featured live music (this was at the onset of the MTV and Much Music generation) so the standard networks used to show great live music (Midnight Special, too). Peace from Jeff’s home town of Toronto.

The show “Night Music” has some great performances of Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Perhaps you might like a RUclips video with Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jeff Healey called, "Look At Little Sister." Just know, Jeff Healey lost his eye sight around 1 year old. Thank you for listening to so many of these talented musicians!
Some of the greatest musicians in music on that stage, and it sounds like it. This is Night Music those men on stage are not Jeff's band, check credits at the beginning.
He was a jazz trumpeter when he wasn't melting faces with his guitar. Him and SRV have video together. Jeff's gone too unfortunately. Crazy that it's not even his band. Jeff lost his sight as a child from cancer and then his life at 41.
I’m sure someone else will have mentioned this but: You are watching Season 1/Eps 4 of one of the best music shows ever on the air. It’s “Sunday Night Music” featuring David Sanborn (host and saxophonist extraordinaire) and that is the house band- some of the best musicians in the business (those guys holding down a sick Joe Walsh is a tribute). Dr John (piano) was also a guest and sat in. There are some fantastic shows if you have time.
Check out Jeff Healy playing with guitarist Phil Sayce back in 2000. Phil is phenomenal! His guitar playing will melt your face! You won’t be disappointed, trust me! ✌️

Hi there. First, Jeff was blind. He died some time ago. RIP. 2nd the first person to play guitar and leaking it was Jimmy Hendrix on" Hey Joe " live. He also played with the guitar behind his head on the same vídeo 😊 you can check it out. Take care
Not bad for a blind Canadian white boy eh!!!! Saw him at Grossman’s in Toronto back in 1989!! What a show!!! Check out the movie Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze ,,,, Jeff Healy and his band are in it!!
😁 Your face had a B I G questionmark all over it! 😁 Love it! 🔥🔥🔥❤️ He has never seen a guitar and was tought the "right" way but felt uncomfortable. Next should be As The Years Go Passing By from Stuttgart Jazz festival. 🔥🔥🔥

How he traps the guitar against his leg with no strap, playing like this...incredible!

I'm gonna have to check him out!
Malcolm john Rebennack aka Dr. John. Start with his biggest hit "Right place wrong time"
And Marcus Miller on bass.
