David Wilkie shocks the dominant USA to win gold in the men's 200m breaststroke event at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games.
The United States men's swimming team dominated the competition at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, winning all events but one: the Men's 200m Breaststroke. And the one who stopped the team's perfect record was not the most likely competitor, representing Great Britain, David Wilkie.
Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka to Scottish parents, swimmer David Wilkie had already won a silver medal at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games in the men's 200m breaststroke event. His finest moment came in Montreal, where Wilkie not only broke American supremacy but also won Great Britain's first swimming gold medal since the London 1908 Games.
David Wilkie retired from professional swimming after winning the Montreal Games.

I remember watching the final as a kid with my mum, she was shouting at the telly 'come on David Wilkie' and he did it. A Scot winning for Great Britain always makes me feel twice as patriotic. Thank You Mum... Thank You David Wilkie.

I believe this man visited my school, Sunnymede Primary in West Molesey in the late 1970's to inspire the kids. Nice thing for him to do if he did. I only dimly remember it being only 6-7 at the time, but vaguely recall a tall man with a moustache being present saying something, whom all the teachers seemed to be very impressed with.

it is quite boring when the gold always goes to the same person. but then that's the reality.

Prior to that win, how many times had John Hencken beaten David Wilke? Hencken dominated the world in that event during the 70's.

+RepriseFan In this event, Wilke beats Hencken by 2 seconds and breaks the world record by 3 seconds. That is an absolutely crushing win. Wilke revolutionized breaststroke technique. From this point on, all the great breaststrokers have used the Wilke technique (wide sculling with the hands, elbows squeezed together in front of the chest at the end of the power stroke, high recover of head and shoulders, dolphin action of the body instead of dead flat.)
