"So where we've had private-sector operation they proved to be totally inept." Some lessons on the railway for Tory MP Jack Brereton from RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch.
Every time I hear Mick Lynch speak, my gloom lifts. The elegance of his thinking and his demeanour when handling politicians and journalists make him possibly the strongest speaker on the left in this country. Increasingly, others are learning his techniques, though, sadly, not many politicians.
One of the last things I made sure that I did before retiring 3 years ago was to vote for Mick Lynch - the ONLY man for the job. who has proved the point every time he speaks on all matters railways.
Mick Lynch proving, yet again, that he has a much wider and deeper knowledge of his industry than the clueless political hacks who sit on these committees.
A tory that cannot budge beyond ideology to see what really works. Our rail network is currently as broken as the rest of the country. Privatisation has failed and Mick Lynch is right to point out its failings.
He is presenting these shining ideals of what the private sector could do. Yeah they could, but unless there is a legal blade to their throats their priority is cash in shareholders and execs hands. Nothing else. To be young and daft again...
Well done Mick Lynch. Schooling MPs over the reality of how Railways are run and work in the UK. Some of these MPs showing that they are "Totally Inept" too.👍
That's when a person who has worked in the industry knows what the are talking about Compared to someone who has a degree in bullshit never done a honest days work in their lives.
Japan's rail operators are really just property developers with a train set as secondary or complimentary service. They also have less restrictions on building with the way their zoning is set up so it's easier to get started and there are less challenges from impacted thirds parties. Over here we have significant challenges in starting a development, rail or otherwise and as we've seen with HS2 a call from a constituent to their local Tory MP gets a project rerouted at a cost of millions extra to the tax payer.
A railway that runs for the sole benefit of passengers - inevitably runs at a loss. This is the basic problem that NO government on either side can understand or accept. In the USA they have very few passenger trains - because freight is dominant, their trains consist of local freights feeding big yards and BIG trains running between the yards. So effectively that's how (big) profit is made by the shipment of goods in bulk, with a premium for express transit. Everything in the UK is inept and dysfunctional for two core reasons....... corporate greed and government bureaucratic interference from idiot politicians who basically farm out everything to contract. They can't even buy a pencil without needing to contract with a supplier and even then they probably pay £4 a pencil to tick the right boxes on a procurement list.
Having spent most of my career building or enhancing railways, Mick Lynch speaks the truth here. Ideology should have no part in running critical national infrastructure. It could be argued the same is true for the DfT
It is, perhaps, less about privatisation, it is about the nature of that privatisation. It’s an incredibly complex business model in the UK. But, yes, I very much agree with Mick that rail and other public transport should be in public hands. It was madness to privatise it - one could see what would happen a mile off. Even Thatcher balked at doing it during her premiership.
Er, no he didn't. ML was asked, for example, about Open Access operations, and he said they weren't paying the full costs. None of the railways pay the full costs, the taxpayer picks up half the tab. Ideological nonsense
I guess master Jack was about 10 years of age when the single largest example of the failure of the Private Sector to exercise sound guardianship of the nations railway failed to do so resulting in the loss of people's lives. Instead of sitting their asking inane questions he'd be better reading up on recent Rail history and all that it has taught the industry. Start with Railtrack PLC.
Jack Brereton asks Mick Lynch: ‘don’t you want passengers to have choice?’ The vast majority of voters don’t have a choice about which rail company they travel with as only one, or at most two different companies operate services from their local railway station(s). The very limited, finite railway infrastructure means that, similar to water, it’s a natural monopoly, and nigh on impossible to meaningfully introduce multiple, competing service providers…. Brereton, like his fellow Conservative MPs, is simply dogmatically wedded to privatisation!
Agreed. I don’t want choice. I just want a train that’s on time that will take me from A to B. Choice doesn’t come into it, unless you’re a Tory. They trot out the word 'choice' as if it’s what we want. But it it isn’t.
This has gone on for so long now like little kids constantly throwing stones. The public are being taxed more if they are not seen to be leading a more greener lifestyle but if you decide I will sell my car & use a train for work you can guarantee you will not be arriving at work on time & some days not even arriving at all. Am not siding with either but the damage to the whole economy here in Uk because of people not being able to rely on a good train system, network is outrageous & has gone on too long. Someone needs to draw a line in the sand but a can’t see it happening any time soon.
Why are the increased passenger numbers relevant? Isn't the real question what is the satisfaction levels amongst those passengers? Maybe numbers are increasing due to external factors like the cost of living meaning people can't afford to run their cars anymore? Or LEZ zones in cities and increased parking charges and restrictions in towns and cities making driving to work very expensive and prohibitive? The government wants to force us onto public transport with a stick rather than entice us on with a good reliable service.
Choice… there is also the choice of driving, taxi, bus, bicycle and walking. One integrated railway system would always mean the consumer had a choice, use the railway or a different mode.
When a "wet behind the ears" tory MP such as this one has an encounter with an experienced and knowledgeable chap such as Mick Lynch it just demonstrates how very much out of their depth the vast majority of MP's really are. If politicians actually had some work and life experiences before entering the H of C then perhaps they would be able to be able to hold a decent and reasoned argument/debate with somebody such as Mick but as it stands if you get an inexperienced politician up against somebody as skilled and as adept as Mick Lynch then there will be blood on the floor, as in this case.
I agree with Mick Lynch on most things but he is wrong to say that private operators haven’t put any money into the industry or built anything. I can think of several recent examples of significant investment - the new rolling stock depot at Exeter is a good example of First Group investing their own capital for example.
It boils my blood when we give billions away but can't afford to sort our own country. Because there is no money for the torys in sorting out its own country. But war makes sunak and zelensky millions curuption that needs investigating by a totally independent body. This is why sunak is desperately trying to stay in power
This boy asking the questions is living in another world he clearly has no knowledge of the detrimental impact that privatisation has had on the railways for years even prior to him being born? He is naive and lacking in experience and knowledge to present his arguments in this way?
Why the massive subtitles that cannot be switched off? I am disabled, and I don't like having the non-disabled imposing their limited viewpoints on us.
Hand the railways over to the unions if they know so much about running them. The profits could be invested in other public services like the NHS. The union members would have a real incentive to run the industry efficiently and so keep their jobs.
Every time I hear Mick Lynch speak, my gloom lifts. The elegance of his thinking and his demeanour when handling politicians and journalists make him possibly the strongest speaker on the left in this country. Increasingly, others are learning his techniques, though, sadly, not many politicians.
Yep, he is what we need to squash the privatisation model

Spot on. And how do we know this? Because the Tory media hide from him in plain sight.
Totally agree with you.
Lynch is right. Privatisation is all about maximising profit to shareholders at the expense of consumers.
What people need to realise is that the shareholders own the company, and the board of directors are their employees.
Always has been and always will.
Poor Jack, another hapless Stoke MP that will be toast in a few months' time
A tory that cannot budge beyond ideology to see what really works. Our rail network is currently as broken as the rest of the country. Privatisation has failed and Mick Lynch is right to point out its failings.
What an ineffectual little wimp.

Mick runs circles around these idiots, well done Mick.

You can just tell that MP didn't have a clue what he was talking about
Some people don't understand when told the truth we have been robbed ❤
And still are
Vincent Van Gogh gets his arse handed to him on a plate every time he tries to to debate Mick Lynch.
Love the woman sitting beside the Tory thinking that she’ll help her career by nodding sagely in agreement with his every point.
YES men and women.
I think you'll find that's due to the nodding dog spring that was fitted when she got the job.
@@rivetjoint9628 indeed!

Another whippersnapper of a Tory politician. Trying to be 'clever'. Bless him. Like taking candy off a baby.

Another masterful performance from Mick.
Mick is great. He knows exactly what he’s talking about, he has an ability to cut through the nonsense and just lay it out in simple terms with facts.

Anything absolutely anything to make a few pound more for their donors - Just ignore every answer that mick is giving and switch to something else.
That lad ain't improved his knowledge since his last failure.
He reminds me of a 16 year old Sixth former, the Tory MP.

Exatly David, rising passenger numbers doesn't mean more money for investment, they keep it for shareholders/investors.
