  • A $400 6GHz non-working Tektronix TDS820 oscilloscope was repaired and revived by replacing 2 EDO DRAM chips (one of them is faulty). The video shows the process of diagnosing and the way of pinning down the root cause. In addition, the video demonstrates the best practice of comparing component data sheets for seeking for similar spare DRAM chips (if no identical model) on eBay.

This is way above my level of diagnosis. Black Arts! Amazing!

Used to us an 820 for semiconductor characterisation until we got merged. Head office used LeCroy wavemasters so we got one and the 820 sat on the shelf for years after that.

Incredible repair!. Thanks for sharing it with us. I have a (extremely small) problem (compared with yours) with a simple DS1486 RAMified watchdog timekeeper chip (of a Tek TDS784A), and silly me...I am not able to fix it. Seeing your video is an inspiration!.

some oscilloscopes can be so expensive. It is worth learning how to fix one for very cheap.

With this scope series (anything TDS really) first thing to check is the powersupply, it is a common point of failure.

Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing it. I have an 820. Is it possible to enable the FFT option through the serial debug port?

I am impressed about the connection to the PC and the lot of opportunities!!! I have 2pc 820´, one is working, the 2nd not. Do you know where I can get an "advanced" service manual? Which program did you use on PC after connecting? Is there existing a documentation about this program?
