Today I just got the 2014 Toyota Highlander XLE model (sunroof and leather). Awesome! This accelerates soo fast (3.5 L engine) and smoothly because it has 6 speeds that 80mph feels like 55mph. PROS: - Voice activated commands for dialing a phone, playing a song, etc. - Double wishbone rear suspension means better handling and 3 inch wider interior in 3rd row. We hardly felt speed bumps. - Shelf for cellphone, Bluetooth, hands-free - BIG 8inch GPS TOUCHSCREEN and backup camera and apps like Accuweather, etc. - side mirrors have turn light blinkers - Sexy styling (looks a little like Jeep Cherokee and BMW X5) with clamshell hood (like Range Rover) and chrome accents on the roofline. Integrated rear spoiler. The door's body tapers in toward the glass window as opposed to the usual boring glass and body flushed against each other. - 11 airbags (includes driver's knee) - traction control, stability control, ABS - sliding 2nd row seat makes it easy to get to the 3rd row - 3 ac outlets and a 110V outlet - Small turning radius of 38.7 feet - BIG 245/60/18 tires - Auto dimming rearview mirror - Easy Driver Speak to amplify driver's voice to the rear passengers - 3 zones a/c system and controllable by 2nd row passengers - Fog lights - Daytime running lights - Rear glass on the tailgate opens - 1 push window down for BOTH driver and passenger - Power tailgate and height adjustable for shorter people or garage doors. - Push button start - sunshades in the 2nd row - garage homelink - heated side mirrors - heated seats (I live where it's hot so I don't really care about this) - windshield wiper deicer (I live where it's hot so I don't really care about this) - 24 months free Toyota maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations. - Toyota has the highest resale value - Toyota reliability CONS: - Tailights are not LED. - White LED light in front is only in higher models like LIMITED. CONCLUSION: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Solid review. Really like the new redesign since it looks more masculine and squared off now. The last gen was too round and soft like the pilsbury dough boy.
I bought a 2015 Limited Platinum AWD and absolutely love it. The ride is secure and quiet. The vehicle is extremely comfortable and I got the EPA estimate 24 MPG hwy with family and gear loaded. The ONLY minor complaint I have is with the JBL audio, it seems to be missing the level of clarity one would expect at the >40K price point.
just received my 2014 limited. What a vehicle! this is my Third highlander, had 2001, 2008 which went with SANDY. I traded in my 2013 Audi Q7 for this 2014. Could not be happier.
I'm surprised at how much I like this. The old model didn't really get my attention, this is different, it has some character without being odd, can't wait to see it in person or drive it.
The thing is - when u drive Toyota vehicles, you drive quality. I have no problem with the way the Highlander is priced. I got mine in a steal from CarMax, but if I knew how well it would drive and how little I would need to repair it, I wouldn't think price about paying a few thousand more for it. Also, the insurance is cheap.. I've been driving my Highlander for 5 years now and routinely change my insurance carriers to keep my rates low (to avoid rate increases). I'm usually able to get rates around the $25 to $30 a month range (I use 4AutoInsuranceQuote or Insurance Panda to find them). The Highlander is more than twice as cheap as my brother's Escalade is to insure. Could not be happier with it.
A little nitpick, but I would have loved to see the reviewer make use of the LED DRLs. I mean, videos like this are supposed to make people more informed, and either encourage or discourage me to go into a dealership. I would have loved to see how the vehicle looked with it's lights on, and that was completely left out.
I had a chance to dissect the new Highlander at the North American Auto show and was somewhat disappointed. Somewhat cheap plastic interior in the Limited model. I still like the previous generation inside and out. It was still a nice vehicle but I don't think it will be competitive against the Durango, Acadia (GM kin), Explorer, etc. This was a humorously great review! Refreshing.
For a family of 5, I like both 2016 xle highlander and 2016- Ex-l pilot. Both look great but Pilots 100,000 timing belt/water pump replacement and loud beeping tailgate is more spacious than the highlander. Anybody drive both and have any input?
QUESTION: I called Toyota dealership here in Toronto, Canada. you mentioned in your video that it comes in 2.7L 4 C, but the dealership told me that the 2014 does not come in 4C anymore. 3.5 is standard going forward. Do you know if the information given to me by the dealership in correct? Could it be that Highlanders in US only come in 2.7L and 4C. Could you kindly respond. thanks
Got darn.....Someone could sleep in that ginormous grill!!! You definitely need a V6 to haul around something that heavy. I pity anyone trying to go up an incline with the 4 banger configuration.
i already know whats going to happen as this has been happening to toyota for years. this car will be "ground breaking" for a year at most, and then the rest of this class will be redesigned and it will be turned into a mid pack car, just like the new camry and rav-4. they shouldve taken notes better, honda already confirmed direct injection VERY similar to the 2014 MDX in terms of engine power specs, a 6 speed auto, and just about every single premium feature they have cooked up in the past year for the accord, civic, mdx etc. toyota should have went NUTS redoing this car because they dont even have a lexus counterpart for anyone to upgrade to.... and the 2.7 liter.. that shouldve been dropped two gens ago.
Judging by people comments the 2014 Highlander is soooo Fugly that most dealership cannot keep up Platinum Highlander in stock... People are on waiting list just like myself : )
I don't care for the height of it. It looks "smushed" as if it's 6-12 inches shorter. So it looks more like a wagon than an SUV. And with the shorter windows, it appears visibility has gone down.
Wow, a 2014 limited edition and no day-time LEDs or back-lights. I think its distasteful how in Europe each and every new Toyota has LEDs everywhere, whereas in the US they are trying to save on it thinking people might not notice it. Besides aesthetically dissatisfying, huge safety issue for me. I noticed that on their new RAV-4 as well.
The 2.7L is a joke for this vehicle. Even the HP & torque numbers of the 2.7L are laughable. Only 6 speeds still but at least it isn't a CVT. Decent engine yet it lacks cylinder deactivation. Kudos on doing something with the behind the 3rd row space. The Hybrid (assuming it's even drive-able around town) pricing is insane. Looks good but i'll wait for the 2015 Pilot.
Great looking vehicle, just bought one, picking it up next week. This guy needs to work on his reviews though, I agree with Cassidy Sundance, the "flowery" language as Cassidy so aptly described it, and the ridiculous analogies really are annoying throughout entirety of this review.
this new highlander did not pass with flying colours at the crash IIHS test..just sad. i was going to buy it ..but will have pass due to the poor test.
No extra safety crap will save you when it is your time to die. Some people survive with minimal safety precautions while others that do take safety serious end up dying. It's just weird.
MrRedskins0021 You couldn't have said it better. No amount of safety can save you when the allotted time is up. Just drive safely and be caution, that the first step. The rest is up to destiny.
I am shocked at the MPG drop. Still made 100% in Japan? I feel like before we buy one, it should be made in US and increase the MPG. I wonder what the smog/MPG ratings are?
They messed it up. It looks like that Tribeca shit. Come on Toyota, You can do better. And whats with the clear tail lights? 2014 guys... come on! I used to love the highlander.
being a japanese car enthusiat for the longest time….my first was a honda, second a honda even my third car was a honda…but when it was time to grow up and time family…i wanted to go back to japanese cars…but what a disappointment, boring interiors, same engines years after year, and if they "change" its just means, different headlamps and few changes here and there, even after 5-6 years…sad..american cars are just better this days, even korean cars are better.
Nice review. Wish you guys in Cali would stop using the metric numbers for your reviews. Looks like another Toy got hit with the ugly stick. I would probably buy it anyway, but I would be ashamed to drive it.
$40k and pretty crappy fuel economy. Nice vehicle but I don't know a lot of families that can really afford something like this. Not that affordability will stop them! We need 8 year car loans! LOL
The butt is borrowed directly from the Sienna, and yes, "it looks like it has a load in it's diaper." Not a bad looking car overall but I'm sure it's full of cheap, scratch prone plastics on the inside like the Camry. Only Toyota can build a car from plastic and sell it for $40+K. And contrary to what someone said below, an "acceptable " rating from IIHS is not at all class average. Competitors are getting "Top Safety Pick +" and this gets acceptable?! Ouch... someone needs to go back to the drawing board. Maybe the mediocre days of Toyota will finally need to come to an end...?
The front looks so ugly in my opinion... the tail lights are too bulgy, and the whole back end reminds me of a Prius V. Anyways, I like the interior...

This is my next car.

While the rear end is kinda polarising, at least it looks similar to the RAV4. Good branding, Toyota.
I'm surprised at how much I like this. The old model didn't really get my attention, this is different, it has some character without being odd, can't wait to see it in person or drive it.
Ikr!! I see a lot of these! I wish I was old enough to drive :( If I was this would be my first car! :)
they are nice, I'd consider one if I were looking for a new car now
Great job Toyota! Hopefully it sticks to Toyota's legacy of building high quality reliable vehicles; all while being made right here in the US.
Very very talented person, got a very nice style and very interesting review.
thumbs up for the "4 banger" reference.
Awesome car... brought one for my parents, Reliable and safe car.
The thing is - when u drive Toyota vehicles, you drive quality. I have no problem with the way the Highlander is priced. I got mine in a steal from CarMax, but if I knew how well it would drive and how little I would need to repair it, I wouldn't think price about paying a few thousand more for it.

This guy cracks me up. Love it.
Great shot with the Doe:) Toyota has stepped up their game! Too bad the fuel economy sucks. I'll wait until it gets 30 mpg overall
Thank you for your interesting review
great review!

great review
Thanks
dannodraws used to be in a commercial of toyota
Toyota has tight budget for renovation and I see it on each new design.

Looks more masculine now. I love it!
Expect more of the 8 seat versions of these than the Traverse, Enclave, or Acadia
Got darn.....Someone could sleep in that ginormous grill!!! You definitely need a V6 to haul around something that heavy. I pity anyone trying to go up an incline with the 4 banger configuration.
Your right that plastic grill weighs a ton.
Kelly Fontes I think they were refering to the overall weight of the vehicle. not just the grill.
1:44 rewinds to check out the socks… lol
Just bought a new CLOTHING model. Looks soo much better I real life.
I meant to say I bought a brand new model. Looks amazing in real life.
I had no idea you could legally buy clothing models...this changes everything....LOL
i already know whats going to happen as this has been happening to toyota for years. this car will be "ground breaking" for a year at most, and then the rest of this class will be redesigned and it will be turned into a mid pack car, just like the new camry and rav-4. they shouldve taken notes better, honda already confirmed direct injection VERY similar to the 2014 MDX in terms of engine power specs, a 6 speed auto, and just about every single premium feature they have cooked up in the past year for the accord, civic, mdx etc. toyota should have went NUTS redoing this car because they dont even have a lexus counterpart for anyone to upgrade to.... and the 2.7 liter.. that shouldve been dropped two gens ago.
Then again....the 2014 Acura MDX is a lousy vehicle that spends a lot of time in the service dept. They were, and still are, CRAP.
I just lost my interest in buying a car thanks to this guy, and I realized I just like RUclips for the comments rather than for the videos
Judging by people comments the 2014 Highlander is soooo Fugly that most dealership cannot keep up Platinum Highlander in stock... People are on waiting list just like myself : )

What part of California was this?
So the front end we see here is a 2nd iteration? I would like to see the 1st draft because this one is just as big of an offender.
Wow, a 2014 limited edition and no day-time LEDs or back-lights. This guy is so nerdy and he owns up to it so we’ll lol
this guy is good
That rear looks a lot like the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Deer at 6:12
My dad has a 2013 version one
great environment
The 2.7L is a joke for this vehicle. Even the HP & torque numbers of the 2.7L are laughable. Only 6 speeds still but at least it isn't a CVT. Decent engine yet it lacks cylinder deactivation. From the Front it looks a bit like a Tundra, and the from the Side the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I have a 2012 highlander & I would never ever get this ugly thing. The front is the worst thing
Ab alternator belt
Too much satire in the review...
it looks like a sienna had a baby with another unknown car LOL
If you look past the chrome, the grill looks like a Mitsu.
Toyota Sienna had a baby with the Dodge Durango.
From the back i looks like a van..but overall it looks pretty good.
Great looking vehicle, just bought one, picking it up next week. This guy needs to work on his reviews though, I agree with Cassidy Sundance, the "flowery" language as Cassidy so aptly described it, and the ridiculous analogies really are annoying throughout entirety of this review.
is this dude for real? Like a Scottish wind?
Looks like Toyota is stealing styling cues from the Mercedes GL and Dodge Durango.
Looks like the pathfinder in the rear.
Interior, beautiful. Specs, reasonable. Exterior, Shit
Its kind of looks like a blind on infinity jx and acura MDX
Why do people say that the Highlander is not fun to drive
this new highlander did not pass with flying colours at the crash IIHS test..just sad. i was going to buy it ..but will have pass due to the poor test.
Acceptable for IIHS is about class average. I think carmakers like Subaru or Honda tend to score a bit higher than Toyota in crashes.
No extra safety crap will save you when it is your time to die. Some people survive with minimal safety precautions while others that do take safety serious end up dying. It's just weird.
MrRedskins0021 I agree, Also Highlander is the 3rd Safest Crossover In Market!
MrRedskins0021 You couldn't have said it better. No amount of safety can save you when the allotted time is up. Just drive safely and be caution, that the first step. The rest is up to destiny.
If I'm ever an eccentric millionaire, I'm going to buy one of these and tow around a Bentley
2 hundred and seventy ponies! LMAO.
I am shocked at the MPG drop. Still made 100% in Japan? I feel like before we buy one, it should be made in US and increase the MPG. I wonder what the smog/MPG ratings are?
I just got the 2014 Highlander XLE model and it is made 100% in Indiana.
Sweet! That's great. I am so happy that they are being built in the US now. Might have to rethink our next car. What the MPG?
19 City and 25 Highway with 6 speeds transmission. That is better than the Honda Pilot at 17 City and 5 speeds.
100% made in America.
They messed it up. It looks like that Tribeca shit. Come on Toyota, You can do better. And whats with the clear tail lights? 2014 guys... come on! I used to love the highlander.
looks a little large to be in the crossover category
being a japanese car enthusiat for the longest time….my first was a honda, second a honda even my third car was a honda…but when it was time to grow up and time family…i wanted to go back to japanese cars…but what a disappointment, boring interiors, same engines years after year, and if they "change" its just means, different headlamps and few changes here and there, even after 5-6 years…sad..american cars are just better this days, even korean cars are better.
My dream home
It might just be me, but it kind of looks similar to the isuzu axiom....
I was trying to peg it.. was thinking a bloated Dodge Journey. But I must agree with Axiom.
Nice review. Wish you guys in Cali would stop using the metric numbers for your reviews. Looks like another Toy got hit with the ugly stick. I would probably buy it anyway, but I would be ashamed to drive it.
Toyota highlander or ford flex?
Depends on what you want. Toyota: reliability, resale value, small turning radius. Ford: more space
Too expensive. I couldn't wait so I opted for the 2014 Durango RT instead.
ITS NICE BUT TOYOTA IS JUST RESTYLING THE EXTERIOR OF THEIR CARS AND RECYCLING THE NON DIRECT INJECTED OLD ENGINES
It looks a bit American tho
$40k and pretty crappy fuel economy. Nice vehicle but I don't know a lot of families that can really afford something like this. Not that affordability will stop them! We need 8 year car loans! LOL
best of all, it ain't got no room for boring
I don't care how reliable Toyota's are, I would rather drive my toaster.
It reminds me of the Subaru Tribeca
I think the guys at Toyota were drunk on this project...
good witdh good length but not good heigt.2 inches taller would be perfect, its really looks like a wagon...
2014 Toyota Highlander is good for geek family!
The grill looks like it´s not finished. WTF!
My uncle has that car
Better name will be Toyota Duncan Macleod (from clan Macleod)
the V6 engine sits so far inside lol
Nice job god bless
Front subaru tribeca.. Back jeep grand cherokee
The front looks so ugly in my opinion... the tail lights are too bulgy, and the whole back end reminds me of a Prius V. Anyways, I like the interior...
It looks like the Subaru Tribeca
myyyy ohhhh myyyy
measuring in Cubic Feet is so stupid.
No offense, but this guy could use a lesson on vocal sonority and a haircut.
wow
dat random deer
Play back at .75 speed and he won't sound as much like a chipmonk
really BIG GRILL
Front look like a smile mouth and back look no different from Toyota minivan
It looks like the dodge journey
Danno
