  • Sailor Moon has something fishy about it, and that is its connection to Goldfish Warning! Both created by Toei by largely the same staff, including Junichi Sato and Kunihiko Ikuhara, Sailor Moon both references and takes queues from Goldfish Warning. In this video I will showcase all the references and connections I could find between the two series.

    It makes me think... Igarashi Takuya is probably carrying a lot of Sato Junichi´s influence in character expression and body language to this very day with a seinen, of all things. Bungo Stray Dogs has serious themes, legit nightmare fuel and extreme violence at times. However, you can´t help but laugh a lot with the comedy relief scenes and small, yet meaningful gags Igarashi decides to put on each season. The humoristic style found in Igarashi´s Sailor Moon episodes and all of Sailor Stars is still basically the same. And it´s wonderful. The same body language gags the Agency characters do in particular (and sometimes Chuuya) are no doubt fruit of Sato´s influence on Igarashi. I really love that.

    This video is awesome! I love Goldfish Warning and Sailor Moon. I can understand why people would be upset about the changes from the manga but for me a lot of the cartoony goofy parts and the way Sato and co were dedicated to making the cast feel like real people are huge part of why I got into Sailor Moon.

    I just noticed where Thomas Astruc took the visual inspiration for Marinettes rambling monologues in Miraculous Ladybug. It has been a while since I last saw the original sailor moon series and I didn't connect the dots right away. And looking back on it, did Totaly Spies do this, too. Amazing how much one directorial choice can influence a whole industry up until now.

    Love the video, absolutely loved it. Super interesting and the Doremi character being a reference blew my mind.
    When I was reading the Sailor Moon manga I was reading it online so I don't know if they were the official translations but in them his backstory of becoming the Tuxedo Mask is the absolute funniest part because he tells us, the audience, that he woke up with amnesia and no doctor could tell him about who he was and, naturally, that is why he felt the urge to walk around at night dressed like that hoping it would trigger back his memories, and that in itself makes him already inherently goofy, so that's funny she thinks the anime made him too silly when it's already a farce.

    The development and run of sailor moon is kind of a touchy subject at times lol
    While I grew up on and loved the anime it's conflicting to know that it did not align with Takeuchi's intent. It must be difficult to have those feelings and she can't even really voice her opinion about it because of the backlash she might get...
    When I was rewatching sailor moon as an adult, i could definitely see the rush/filler/self insertion parts that made it feel very different from the manga.
    I'm glad we got crystal today and can't wait to see the final movie! 😢

      can't remember if i forgot while making this video or decided to leave it out because the interviews i cited were newer, but in the laserdisc interviews from the original series you could see how ecstatic she is about her work being adapted.
      Q: Your thoughts about it becoming an anime?
      Naoko Takeuchi: I never thought they would turn out that deep eventually! The characters I scratched gained their own voices... and movements. They looked just alive. I got really excited. And even now, I'm still excited.
      (source: ruclips.net/video/_b3HcC4tvYw/видео.html)
      so i think my observation of her feelings being conflicted is probably the most accurate. she was really excited in the beginning and then had some minor issues along the way because its a 200+ episode anime where the team had to constantly write new stories

    This is a cool video! I heard via word of mouth alone that the show was basically effectively replaced. Guess it confirms my suspicions. It's sort of funny, actually. I've been collecting cels upon cels of this show (I have more than I want to admit, I guess I'm the local cultist of this show) and I even got the theory about it myself, since there's loads and loads of merch for this show that nobody wants but it's always for sale.
    It's really weird though. I've noticed that after the switchover to Sailor Moon, the GW franchise as a whole ...just died. The only real "new" thing for the series outside of re-releasing or re-airing episodes or the whole show by that point was effectively the 1995 Super Famicom game Jaleco made (said game is amusingly one of the most visually impressive titles on the system, but is absolutely terrible as an actual game). In fact, it seems even some of the show's fans back in the day kind of forgot it existed a good bit, provided you can find any who watched it back then. As a result it's weirdly become "obscure even for Japan" which is kind of saying a lot for Toei franchises, but it's not the first or last to suffer from it.
    Despite all of this, Toei ...still makes merch for it very occasionally? Not sure why, but I wonder if it has to do with retaining IP rights? Aside from the usual DVD/Blu-Ray re-releases, there's been stuff made as recent as... 2020. I genuinely doubt they're going to actually try remaking the show or "re-booting" it (Toei show series often seem to die hard) but it is interesting seeing that someone internally just... still cares, despite pretty much everyone moving onto Sailor Moon and milking the living crap out of that.
    By the way, did you know third-parties made garage kit figures of the series? So far, there's one for Wapiko and Chitose. I haven't been able to find anything outside of a really poor quality JPG of the Wapiko one but I did mange to win an auction for the Chitose one (now the problem is, I just need to know how to actually assemble a garage kit figurine...)
    -- here's some timestamp stuff i wanted to comment on --
    at 7:42 the redhead across from Chitose is Yurika! Easily noticable with the purple bow and hairstyle in the back of the head! It's even funnier how said bow and hairstyle is altered/removed in future SM episodes, they definitely knew what they were doing.
    and 8:38 the recent 2020 merch for GW is... keychains! yeah, you can get one of the Gyopi ones for real! although, you can also get others, like Wapiko, Aoi, and the chicken (i believe there's more to that!) The Gyopi one also comes with a bag of chips, because of course it would.
    8:45 the entire class from Inaka/Inako is there! The extremely off model younger Chitose is rather funny though, since in the actual show's canon she has a different hairstyle and outfit.
    9:34 same thing as above. Probably intentional in both for the sake of recognizability (the young chitose design was used for like, one episode if i recall correctly)
    10:10 that's an amusing reference. Especially seeing a character best known for looking (and acting) super childish looking so mature/serious. She's barely recognizable in a way.

    • @HaydenTheHistorian
      @HaydenTheHistorian  Год назад

      many of these kids shows get lots of garage kits. just sucks when those kits are like the only good-looking figures lol. i enjoy figure collecting a lot and it sucks that like the one proper princess tutu figure is only available as an expensive garage kit. i imagine chitose should be easier to paint though

    • @forple8930
      @forple8930 Год назад

      @@HaydenTheHistorian She's not that hard in terms of garage kits it seems (the Wapiko one looks like pure hell to paint and assemble with how much is going on in it), but for me I have zero clue on how to assemble garage kits because I've never bothered to do such a thing until now. Honestly, I'd probably go assemble a few others just so I don't mess up the chitose one.
      I too really love figure collecting every now and then, I have a cool SM Eternal one on top of my CRT TV alongside a Higurashi one (among others) and i wish actual canonical figures for Chitose or the GW cast were made. Hell, I wouldn't complain if they did one of Wapiko/Gyopi and nobody else. But it'd be like asking Valve to actually update TF2 with something major; It won't happen since what Toei is currently doing is just printing money endlessly and as such they likely can't be bothered to do anything with GW anymore.

    • @HaydenTheHistorian
      @HaydenTheHistorian  Год назад

      you could always commission somebody to assemble and paint chitose for you. im sure there might even be some people locally who could do it. sitting on a couple garage kits myself for saint tail and angelic layer and i dont dare touch them lol
      i think i saw a couple goldfish warning in some magazine i was reading for research. they looked like the small kind of gachapon trading figures though which i guess is better than nothing. i have a couple of those from fun fun pharmacy which i think you can see in the video somewhere. also on a sidenote since you brought up tf2, it is actually getting a bigger update sometime this summer. the devs talked about it on their blog. literally all i can ask is for them to somehow change the scorch shot lol

    • @forple8930
      @forple8930 Год назад

      yeah i've considered comissioning someone, but doing so locally, i'm pretty much unsure about considering how absolutely stupidly small this state is combined with the fact there's not much in terms of "specialty" people/businesses outside of overpriced retro game stores that sell anime figures (for seemingly random prices) lol
      also i've been looking for more GW related stuff, and one amusing discovery i made was with the Bandai LCD game. it's the only one (of all the reskins of this specific LCD game) to credit a programmer, which is "H.N." and it's the same exact abbreviation as "Hiroto Nakamura", the same programmer who did pretty obscure Famicom/Game Boy titles, but his best known work is probably the GB Mega Man 2 (which i could write a whole separate essay on lmao) and he almost always ran under the abbreviation "H.N." for every game he directly worked on. I also found a few sources claiming this specific guy went to work for bandai, but they're notoriously unreliable but the initials weirdly line up here...
      Another weird thing i found was on yahoo auctions a couple weeks ago; There was a reference sheet auction claiming 216 pages of design references for the show, with the starting bid being at 80USD. being the stupid person i was, i bid on it and won (the amusing and anticlimatic part is that i won it simply by being the only bidder, since GW stuff on there is a devoid ghost town to my surprise)
      I'm unsure of all the contents, but taking into account the few listing images, it seems like one of the many design booklet copies animators on the animation teams got. The package claims to arrive tomorrow, so I'll be able to confirm everything then. I also plan on scanning all of its contents eventually, I would need to source a new scanner beforehand, though. I would love to share some images of it when it does arrive but i'm not sure how i'd do that via a youtube comment without getting hit by the spam filter.
      Also it seems there was an entire toy dollhouse series for this show that never made it past just one or two of the 5 or 6 advertised "locations"; it seems there was going to be more than just Inako and its exterior addon. it's sort of interesting since there's no real action figures i can think of that would go along with it, so i wonder what would go in it?
      i could also go on a whole different rambling about all the other stuff ive documented and seen but its so numerous to the point where i'd be likely to keep you reading a comment all day or hit the youtube character limit trying, so i wont lol

    • @HaydenTheHistorian
      @HaydenTheHistorian  Год назад

      my partner actually found one of those LCD games for hime-chan's ribbon a while back. must have also stumbled across a couple goldfish warning ones looking for possible materials or dumb games. they look very funny
      please do! i have tons of stuff i probably should scan too, and while i dont have a scanner at home, i do have access to one where i work. im a little more petty so if i have exclusive or rare information on hand, i would rather incorporate it into a video before releasing it to the public as a kind of way of advertising. i have no problem actually releasing stuff though and have done plenty of that in the past
      honestly i kind of slapped this video together cause i wanna get out of this shitty mindset that every video on a subject has to be all-encompassing. i dont see myself returning to goldfish warning in the future outside of mentions but sailor moon still has so much stuff to cover. i just hope what i say in this video is at all useful lol

  • @jennynoelle6782
    @jennynoelle6782 Год назад +3

    One of the biggest "easter eggs" the anime included, at least in the first arc, was probably the Kunzite x Zoisite thing.
    Due to the production being rushed, the people working on the anime made a lot of independent decisions regarding the characters. One of these decisions was that the four Generals "were basically B-list villains who would have no bigger role in the plot", and would be safe to kill off or alter however they wanted. So, for one reason or another, the decision was made to pay homage to an 80s anime, Boku Patallrio!, which was also made by Toei and shared a voice actor or two.
    This decision probably ended up making the anime more tragic than it's counterpart, not less. Takeuchi was very openly upset about how Toei handled the group, since she intended to incorporate them into the narrative more. The plot threads she intended to use would have to be cut short - particularly the Generals' romances with the Inner Guardians. As a result, in a universe where "true, predestined love" is real, four of the five main girl characters remain single forever because their own "true loves" are dead... and they may or may not have killed them. Additionally, in future arcs of the series (once they gave the manga the opportunity to lead the way, more or less) there is a reoccurring thing where, for example, Venus crushes on a guy with white hair or Mercury is targeted by a biologically male character in a dress. Which I kind of find hilarious.

      There's also the "generals originally being Endymion's guardians" plot point that was cut short in the anime, only very subtly being referenced by Nephrite recognizing Mamo when he first sees him. Otherwise they're straight up villains with not much going on with them. Jaidete didn't even interact with the other 3 before being written off. Though the tragic redemption arc of Nephrite was a highlight of the first season imo, and a precedent of how some of the villains will later be expanded upon in future seasons.
      Though at the very least there was a PC Engine CD visual novel game set in the anime continuity that gives the generals some more to do, as well as more or less reinstate their associations with Mamo and the inner guardians from other media. Basically a predecessor of Black Moon's Wiseman revives them and Queen Beryl to carry its evil plans. It's set in-between both arcs of season 2. Totally worth watching, you can look it up on this site in full (each guardian has their version of the story campaign, with their own exclusive scenes btw).
      Going a bit into spoiler territory, my favorite part of this story is when Jupiter stays a bit longer to talk to Nephrite before the final battle after everyone else left in her story campaign, and she compliments him saying that he's a great person and, most importantly, that he remains her of someone she once loved. That was brilliant imo as it subverts Jupiter's usual "he reminds me of my ex boyfriend" running gag by subtly referencing her past life romance with him. It was a touching moment. Considering that he perished literally the episode before her debut in the anime, them getting those interactions was special. Jupiter x Nephrite is probably my favorite of the guardian x general pairings since their designs match really well, so it was a major bonus for the story.
      Something else that caught my attention is that Zoisite openly addresses the generals x guardians pairings in Mercury's campaign by saying that he fell in love with her sometime before the Moon Kingdom was attacked. While this fully confirms that plot point existing in the anime continuity, it also subtly buries that Zoisite x Kunzite subplot since it's never addressed in the game period. Guess that was something that only the season 1 staff was willing to follow.
      And most notably, at the end of the final battle Moon uses the Silver Crystal to heal and purify the generals and Beryl's unresting souls, since they all perished there, allowing them to reincarnate once again as normal people in order to have normal lives for once. Which means that in the larger scope of the anime continuity, the healed and revived generals are still out there somewhere in the later seasons, similarly to the Akayashi sisters from R. And they could reunite with Mamo and the inner guardians at any given moment. And poor Jupiter and Venus could finally have boyfriends too. I mean, Mercury and Mars had a few short lived romances in earlier seasons, but Jupiter and Venus were left empty handed after their backstories with the senpai and Alan respectively.
      Also, I guess Venus really has a strong association with white haired fellows considering her affinity with Ace in Sailor V, as well as Yaten in Sailor Stars before the starlights' identity reveal. And there's ofc Artemis as her pet guardian. All of them are white haired just like Kunzite.

    I love sailor moon! As a boy I thought she's so pretty and actually brave who looks out for her friends.
    Too bad lot of adult men tend to weirdly sexualise characters to mock girl shows in general.

      They don't do it to "mock" the show, it happens most of the time because they idealize and love that character a great deal.

      @@the-NightStar false. If they would actually "love" them they would AT LEAST do wholesome stuff as well. But they only colonize girls interest, tear it apart and wank all over it with no regard. Men have million media (games, tv, etc.) just for them, the least they could do is leave the things that are meant for little girls ALONE.
