      It's a mnemonic device for how they keep track of measures. Carnatic music isn't really written. It's all memorized stuff, so keeping track requires insane coordination. People studying this stuff can't even put on their first recital until they've studied for a decade or more and their teacher deems them worthy.

    INSANE is the word. Congrats. India have by far the most complex and fathomless rythmic tradition. Nothing is even close, not even african, cuban or brazilian match this mental engineering. And its wonderful syllabic pedagogy simply have been functional along centuries. It works, as we can see in the original video

    If you haven't already you should check out A Reshuffling of Atoms by Mattias IA Ecklundh, it uses the same Konnakol duet, but in a much different way that you might find entertaining.

      Fun fact martial arts started in South india kalari Payyatu is known as mother of martial arts. And South Indian sage bodhi dharma went to China and taught which later became Shaolin. So u are right in a way
