I've got about 3000 hours in one of those. Loved that airplane!

I’ve flown one a bunch.I can’t honestly say I love it... but once you get a feel for it, there is something about it.

I worked with them for a few years back in the 70s with the Sultan of Oman Air Force. Nice to work on - apart from a million screws in the floor.

Ahh, the old Shorts Skyvan. I lived across the road from the Shorts factory (now Belfast City - EGAC) during the 1960s and 70s, and watched the early flight tests on both the Shorts "Belfast" and the Skyvan, We locals called it the "Breadvan" because of its similarity with our mobile bread van delivery vehicles - same box shape and blunt nose! Of course, Shorts were eventually taken over by Bombardier, who updated the design. I have the Carenado 3-30/3-60 fleet on P3D, and love it! I don't know that it's as ugly as people say, but it's certainly quirky and fun to fly - if very slow when you have 9,000lbs of cargo on board. Lovely to see a few of these oldies still flying.

I lived down the road from you in Bangor in the 60's and 70's. I have fond memories of them flying low over our house occasionally, probably on demo, training or test flights.

It was the highest volume produced British commercial aircraft since 1945 with 496 in various versions built .As a cargo aircraft it was the aviation equivalent of the Ford Transit can -designed and built by Short Bros in Belfast -the worlds oldest aircraft company -formed in 1908 and still.in business .

I began my working life in Shorts, flew in a Belfast, was a radio tech. The under-the floor was used to install the radio gear (my job). Very compact plain and versatile craft!

Anyone ever consider converting these into essentially Motor Homes? This would be one hell of a flying winnebago, Could have a small E-dirtbike mounted at the rear ramp area in some way, and convert the rest of the usable space into a living space styled after a Class C motorhome layout.
    Bugout flying motorcoach anyone?

I have one in my garden which I use as a workshop, minus the engines and wings of course.

This brings back so many memories.
Ww2: Broad Daylight over Berlin-you find yourself in the glorious center of a gargantuan raid with 1200+ of your fellow skyvans (still painted bright yellow back then) ready to unleash hell on the citizens.
Imagine the sheer terror, not being able to discern the true sun from all those decoys racing by overhead. You can't beat the psychological value a raid like that could bring.
And fond memories in the cockpit "No Hansel!!! This is not a parachute rai-" too late he's already jumped as everyone groups around the rear square to watch Hansel descending without his parachute. Good times good times.
Of course my clearest memory of all is the brilliant clarity in which I can still somehow see the propellor blade that was to hit me straight in the head. Oh hahaha I'm sure that gave me a lil bump for the morning!

Heavens...was that a stall warning horn at 8:00? Watched one of these doing meat bombing in Australia. It was beating the parachutists down.
