    How was this not nominated for Best Film Editing

    • @Simple1DEA
      @Simple1DEA 4 года назад +483

      Probably artistry is required as a criteria for editing. Organising the cuts for the film is done in the script and in pre production and not in post by the editor. It does require some skill by the editor to hide these cuts but no creativity since the creative part is done in pre production.

    • @vgcuts
      @vgcuts 4 года назад +136

      though it got best Visual Effects for these cuts

    • @MatiasAuramo
      @MatiasAuramo 4 года назад +121

      Because these cuts are vfx, not editing. It was all planned and rehearsed carefully ahead, the editor had pretty much nothing else to do in this film than choosing the best takes and then sending them over to the vfx department. Usually the editor gets to tell the story by using the footage any way he wants (and how the director and producers want of course), cutting out scenes, extending scenes, shortening scenes, reorganizing scenes and shots, using different camera angles and making the rhythm of the film and so on. There's so much you can usually do with editing that was simply not possible on this film.

    • @TheSharkIsWorking_23
      @TheSharkIsWorking_23 4 года назад +53

      You’re joking right? Please tell me you’re joking?
      As a documentary film editor, this would be the easiest Oscar nomination for an editor to have gotten, since all the cuts are pre-planned and the film was shot for these planned cuts. The editor(s) of 1917 did not have to make the usually decisions in post-production of 1917 as they would on other films. All the credit goes to the cinematographer, visual effects, and director for making these scenes flow like a single take. Great film, but an editing nomination would’ve been an insult to other editors who had to piece together and structure whole scenes from multiple angles.

    • @moochercat
      @moochercat 4 года назад +8

      It won for cinematography and to make these cuts it was the planning of the shots that allowed it to work, so it was less editing and more due to the fact of how it was shot. Also, they did CG work to make them appear seamless.

    In my honest opinion, I can understand why this film would have been secluded from the Best Editing category. The film's editing isn't really anything special, as the cuts we see are all very heavily planned and choreographed so the editor wouldn't really have control over where he/she was cutting other then the take the choose from. This really falls under a VFX category as, that department would have been the ones who had control over the method in which the cut transitions and the tool they use to do it. That is just my opinion. Although it is a really great film and did take home 3 oscars, I don't really feel that it falls under the Editing category as this films amount of cuts in the double digits, others are in the quadruple digits likely. Either way, I really respect all the work that was put into the film, and how the film turned out on a cinematic & technical achievement. Glad I am creating a conversation in the comments and I'd love to hear anyone else's opinion. Harrison,

      I think it has a lot to do with how the editing was done, a lot of these are subtle/hard to notice. Bohemian Rhapsody won Best Editing and was criticized for having one scene where the cuts were HORRENDOUSLY obvious. Which might have influenced the decision. Not to say the Oscar Board is uncultured or untrained or what have you, but I feel like sometimes they don't know how to truly appreciate/understand what they are watching especially if rumors of complaints about Parasite having subtitles only are true.

      To be honest...they won an oscar on VFX cause I think of how they used CGI to make it look real-time performance as well as improvised use of practical effects like flares and 'burning buildings' to produce light on set...thats just me

    This movie has some of the best cinematography, film editing, directing, and visual effects of all time- once you watch this movie, you’ll walk away completely appreciative of what these men have done for our country. This movie may have been a fictional story, but you have to bear in mind someone had to go and call off the attack going through probably similar scenarios (this movie was based off a real life event where the Germans did retreat and nearly fooled the Allies). This movie will change you, and it deserved so much more at the Oscars although it won big.

    No idea how this won best Vfx. We do these types of cuts and split screens all the time and don’t get an Oscar win. Complete joke. Give it to the lion king or end game. Both of those films made massive leaps forward with their tech and the execution. It’s so puzzling how something that has been done for years just gets the Oscar.

  • @ComedyBros5

    This movie was robbed at the Oscars. As great of a film as Parasite was, 1917 deserves Best Editing & Picture. Knives Out should've won Best Screenplay.

    • @pseudonymousbeing987
      @pseudonymousbeing987 4 года назад

      This film barely had any editing. The editing in Parasite was utterly masterful. This film barely utilises it. The cuts while great and all, well executed and very well thought out etc, it is the same thing over and over again with nothing really that complex or interesting. Parasite is a 2 hour long demonstration of editing mastery. From montages to the flow of sequences there is total control over every aspect to achieve perfection. Editing is far more present and important and integral to Parasite.
      As for best picture. That's more debatable. I still think Parasite deserves it because it's a masterpiece in every regard imo. Also it's highly original and unique, lastly Boon-Joon Ho just straight up deserves an Oscar generally. We could discuss all day if you so desire.
      So now that I've done my babbling, why do you think 1917 deserves best picture and best editing?
      Smiley face coz I like em -> :)

      He said, that it is just his presumption. I watched the movie twice and I also thought it might be a "cut". It looks a bit off to me, the movement of the camera, unnatural. Not quite so extreme as the jump from the bridge (wich is the "worst" edit in the film for me and really thew me out, but thats the only one that is not so good) but still a bit weird. You can see the camera loosing the ground, the dirt for quite some time, also the background is completely edited in this scene, the fog etc is added in so they could have pose morphed him from one take to another.
      I could be done, from a technical point, but I'm not sure. Hope, this helps!

    • @HarrisonTheAvidEditor

      In my opinion, it feels as if they rotoscoped him out. It's hard to explain but it feels like if u go frame by frame of him jumping into the ditch, the he feels very separated from the background.

    • @danielfried2431
      @danielfried2431 4 года назад +2

      @@HarrisonTheAvidEditor that is what I mean. It feels the same like the bridge jumping feels, and I think it's less the roto, more the movement that feels off I don't know. Maybe it is because we loose the ground and have no point of reference since the camera accelerates

      Daniel Fried yeah that is possible. Maybe they tried to stabilize the motion and have it focus on him? Idk I’m pretty set on it being a cut because I feel as if they could have transition from before he was in the ditch to being in the ditch, but the technique to do that I do not know. It’s hard to say but this is why I made the video to make everyone discuss! :)

    One thing that might be overlooked a lot is how clever it's filmed regarding foreground objects. Throughout the intire film there are sooo many foreground objects getting passed, which means that when it transitions between the scenes, the viewer is already used to having a lot of foreground objects passing the screen. That is what makes a lot of these transitions work in the film, even though this ones in this video might not be the craziest ones.

      Hey thank you for watching, so I looked through frame by frame of where I felt these cuts were to happen, and looked for things like: wardrobe changes, bg changes, hand placement drastic changes and also thinking on a technical scale as to how they could pull this off. And typically there is some sort of artifact on the screen that is a result or product of VFX stitching. Roger Deakins (the cinematographer of this film) said that most were right, some were wrong and some were missing. I just did this video for my own amusement and thought it would be interesting to see. But I'm glad that I'm creating a discussion. Thank you for watching it!

    I'm not a cinematographer, but i'm humbly ask to correct me if i was wrong. The quick pan was when another obstacle passed by. The zoom in was when the camera entered a less bright set. And the timelapse, i think, they're only happened when Sco falling from stair after got shot and when he was falling from waterfall. Am i wrong ?
