Move the beater down to hit the centre of the cajon because the snare wires are at the top of the cajon. The best bass note is in the centre or bottom third of the cajon. Your kick will sound 1000 times better when the beater is hitting the correct spot.
I thought that when I was assembling everything but unfortunately the pedal is pretty high so you'd have to have a really short beater (so short that I don't think you'd get a good sound). It may be a more long term solution to build some sort of a base that would raise the cajon a few inches so the beater is closer to the center. Again... this was a quick and dirty mod. Thanks for watching.
You are amazing. YOu know you would have loved digging through my late dad's workshop~ I KNOW I got rid of hinges,..LOVED your idea. Sounds Great too!~! Awesome Video~
Thanks.. and it sounds like your dad had some cool stuff. I'm sure you miss him very much. Stay tuned... I've got a couple more videos coming that are in this same wheelhouse.
Great video, mate. I was searching for videos on this topic and just so happened to see that you of all people had done this. I must have missed it when you uploaded it. I don't recommend you use the original drum beater again, cajons really aren't hardy beasts at all. A friend of mine actually put a hole in the front of hers just from using her foot as a bass beater and not too hard either. And I have to applaud the door hinge. Even for you that's some resourceful imagination.
You could separate the leaves of the hinge, turn one of them around and re-insert the pin back on. That way it will line up better with the bass drum pedal gripper
Thanks for watching. You could most definitely do that. In fact, I did think of that during the prototyping process. You are correct that it move the outside portion of the hinge "higher" but then the hinge doesn't sit flat when you fold it back in. If you were planning to use the cajon only with a kick pedal, that would be a good option but if you plan to use it both with and w/o the pedal, you might be happier with the standard format. A couple little pieces of velcro on the hinge and it doesn't rattle or anything. Great suggestion.
Hello, thanks for the idea, some colleagues says that drummin is a matter of imagination and creativity... so the sky is the limit when looking for a perfect set up. I made my pedal base with a door hinge like you said, and putted a little velcro to secure it when is not needed and resulted great... do you know how to make a cable driven kick pedal? it would fit more confortable for some people, like me! Greets from Panama.
Thanks for watching. I'm not sure how you'd go about making one of those. I know there are a few on the market. I'd assume it's a pretty specialized mechanism. I wonder if you could 3D print one?
LOL - good stuff - stopped by while trying to come back up to speed --- take a quick run by Steve's as well -- will update you when I get back to the "SATSUMA#500" project

Thanks for checking it out. Good to know about the standard beater. I thought it was just a little too hard. I appreciate your feedback.
The result is satisfying
Thanks for watching.

@@musicalmiscellany Thanks for answering so quickly!, yep, I think this time the better option is to get it on the market.
This is very interesting
Thanks. It's a simple technique but I think it will work well.
When playing the guitar it is no longer necessary to sit on the cajon. I just turn it around, use the pedal traditionally and sit on a stool or chair.
Thanks for checking out the video. I actually mentioned that exact point around 4:07.
Great video...put s shaker on your spare foot for extra spice
Thanks for watching and yes... that's a great idea.
BRILLIANT
Thanks. I'm glad the video was helpful.
Brilliant!
Thanks for watching.
I have a cajon drum kit too 😊
They are a lot of fun, check out my video here: ruclips.net/video/MQqfrYfNSHM/видео.html
Comes back from guitar center wearing a mask because Covid 19 stinks donkey biscuits.
Yeah. This video was posted in Oct fo 2020 which was a time of high awareness for sure. What a frustrating year.
how big is the cajon you are using? what are the dimensions.
The cajon is 11.75" x 11.75" x 18". Thanks for watching.
use velcro to attach or release
That's a good idea. Thanks.
Another video I saw, recommended using a hinge with internal spring.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you're doing okay.
Was that a 3 inch or a maybe a 3.5 inch hinge?
It’s a 3” hinge but I’d imagine either size would work. Thanks for watching.
@@musicalmiscellany Perfect, thanks!
NIce!
Thanks Steve. I got a couple more videos coming that will expand on this. **foreshadowing**
I look forward to them.
groundbraking.... u screwed your cajon..... my perc heart is crying right now.....
Sorry to damage your perc heart but thanks for watching. FWIW, having the hinge on there doesn't bother me.
