Thanks for the great video! I'm in South Florida and looking forward to doing a New Buccaneer trip soon. Its 1100 mike trip each way so I needed your info. Thanks again!
Thanks for all this great info Eric, it helped me land my first KEEPER yellowfin tuna a couple weeks back. It was on chunk which I rigged up the way you have instructed here and in your other videos. Your chunking technique works great by the way, except that we could only land one of the three we snagged. Now, if you can do an instructional video on how to increasing our landing percentages of said yellowfin tuna that would truly be a hum dinger of a video! Maybe focus in on how to keep them from under the danged boat so the hull doesn't scuff the braid and let them snap it off. 😁
Awesome to hear that you got your first yellow! When chunking you will miss a few, that just happens! It’s tough to keep them from under the boat! I do try to put pressure on them like I did on the one in the popper video! Remember that if you rest the tuna rests and it will recover faster! Try to constantly pull the fish, even if it’s just 1-4 inches! Keep that pressure on! Shorter fights equal less lost fish!
Thanks for the wealth of info. and for sharing your Tuna Fishing Experiences. What was the budget spinning reel options for Poppers and lures you had mentioned ?
@@ThumpemupFishingchannel I am looking at getting set up for the 30 hour trip on the New Buc fortunately there are several set up options for YFT and appreciate the advice. Not sure if I want to invest $500 - $ 600 in a set up yet so basically looking at the cheaper ones for now. On the other hand I dont want to get out there and have equipment issues LOL
@@Reelswift1 to keep it super cheap, get the ugly stick tiger lite jigging and casting poles in 60-80lb range if you can find one. Get a Shimano Spheros casting reel and a conventional jigging reel. You need 300 yards of 65 lb braid. An Avet will work. Get (or make) 80lb windon leaders and that’s all you need. I use cheap indicator braid on my conventional but really good castable braid on my spinning reels (Seaguar threadlock 50) to get that extra distance.
@@ThumpemupFishingchannel Thank you for making the great video and providing the insightful responses to the questions. What model of Avet would you recommend?
Thank you very much for this video and your other video on GPB. I go on Williams Party Boat 36 hour Tuna trip in Sept. I have been looking for what to bring on the trip. I was really worried I would not have the right gear. I got a Penn Spinfisher 10500 with a carnage 3. Thanks to this video I think I should be good and I know what lures to get too. I do appreciate it.
@@treya4872 You will see what the tuna are biting on. Although I love fishing poppers and topwater, there are times throughout the night when the jig or chunk bite is hot or I'm just too tired from casting so will alternate techniques...
Hi Eric, I'm looking to get the Berkley X9 #50 braid for my deep drop rod (because its the thinnest #50 braid I have been able to find .030mm) do you have a color recommendation - green vs. white? Pros Cons?
I don’t have a color preference other than indicator braid for jigging when using a conventional or spinning reel…. Maybe others can chime in. One thing to consider is that the white is a little easier to see at night.
Do you ever have problems casting your wind ons? I tie bimini's and do a loop to loop with the windon. Will I be alright casting that rigging if my leader is 30ft long?
For casting I usually use a shorter wind on and try to keep the wind on short enough that it stays off the spool. With a loop to loop you really should not have a problem casting the wind on though.
@@josiebos7282 if a Halco I use a barrel snap swivel or a SPRO snap. If tying to a jig, I tie to a barrel swivel and use a split ring on the other end to swap out the jig. I also attach my assist hook to the bottom of the barrel swivel as well.
I dropped from 80 to 60 on my trip and got bites when no one else was, although I also got broken off once after that. 3 strikes, one 50 lb fish landed, one came off the hook, another bit through the leader
Very valuable detail information for tuna fishing! I like the variety of fishing style you covered.
Those are the best techniques to catch fish! You have to fish what the conditions call for to catch fish!

Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Thanks for sharing tuna rig information. There is a lot of logistic planning that goes into a tuna trip.
Yes there is! Thanks for watching!
Great talking, a lot of information. Do you have the video on your May 12-13 trip?
Working on it!

You can use a Shimano Spheros or Diawa BG reel

I used the same reel with 65lb braid and it has more than enough drag and line capacity. It gets heavy after casting all night though

What colors of the snapper slappers do you recommend? -> 7oz Snapper Slapper Saltwater Lure
I use red and white, blue and white and purple and black. The key is rigging them with squid and a sardine to catch the beasts!
Good video.
Thank you Earl! I hope you saw the video from the May trip as we tried most of these lures!
What color on the poppers? And for the Spro prime snaps, looks like they come in 125 or 175, so I'm guessing to get the 175? Thx
I go with pink and chartreuse poppers and the 175 prime snaps. Let me know if any other questions!

Maybe mention what lb line ur using 🤷🏻♂️
65lb braid and 80lb fluorocarbon leader
What rods are you using for Jigging?
I use a Valley Hill but it’s overkill for the GOM (I also use it for bluefin). I used to use an Ocean Tackle International Fathom blade
What is the lightest leader you would use ?
I use 80lb fluorocarbon. I have had a few chew throughs on 60lb
80 lbs anything under that might become a frustration.

What size braid do you have on that Stella for the top water set up?
Are toothpaste poppin robbs good
Two piece popping rod good
All the popping rods I use are two piece…. They are butt joined and connect right above the fore grip on the handle.
