Spider gear was popular when i started commercial fishing until the went to yearly quota. Used to run 2 50 hook spider gears with twisted 125 an and xtea burner gear. Im not sure if i started a new trend but i did my spider gear different then every1 else and they took alot longer to start twisting. Commercial fished for 20 years. Going on a 30 hour tuna on the 9th. Miss those days tho
I've been on several of the 12 hour trips out of Galveston - on both the head boats that operate from dock #18. The trips go about 60-65 miles offshore, and take 3.5 to 4 hours to reach the first fishing spot. I've seen water only 70-80 feet, and sometimes double that, but the areas they go aren't super deep.
I would go a little heavier, I prefer 65lb. You never know what you will get, could be a red, AJ, or grouper. You could also get tangled or rub the hull…. 40 lb should work but I like the extra few pounds. Some guys go even heavier…

Cool Video
Thank you!
Does a carolina rig work good on the party boat
Yes it does, especially if you are fishing rigs and there are mangrove snapper around. I normally keep it higher in the water column.
What lb test do you recommend for these rigs?
I would go with 65lb to 80lb
Will forty pound mono mainland work for red snapper
