  • Two space fleets battle for survival. Destroy the enemy mothership to win!
    Red versus blue, who will win?
    Marbles will determine which ships get launched from each mothership.
    Ship types:
    Inty (interceptor) - basic, fast moving craft with a small gun
    Bomber - long range missile attacker, struggles against small and fast craft
    Hunter - medium range, has a hitscan railgun that deals heavy damage
    Gunship - fitted with multiple cannons to fire on all sides
    Ships automatically engage in combat once launched.

    The motherships are maybe too close. It's annoying when in a midst of an intense fight, a ship just accidentally goes into the enemy territory and gets melted by the opponent's mothership.

      Couldn't agree more. Blue was the first to summon Gunships 2 no less. And they got absolutely melted because they went to the Mothership.
      When they Lucked out and spawned 10 Gunships at once against a massive hoard of Red ships
      Didn't mean much because they got melted again.

    Pros: The unit selection system has become more interesting and unpredictable; The 3D window with a ship that flies and fires is very mesmerizing, which is why sometimes I just follow one ship; A 3D space where ships don't just crash into each other and die, they fly around each other and try to attack all together.
    Cons: All Mаrble projects lack action music; Sometimes ships fly off screen

    love the added POV to the fighters since it gives a great sense of immersion, the grey balls were a great addition since it allows for much more randomness in the selection. only recommendations would be a shield for the mothership, permanent or timed and a couple of stationary escorts to help defend.

    As a picture or a video, this is absolutely gorgeous. It’s a bit hard to keep track of as a game or a conflict, but I can’t think of a good way off the top of my head to make it easier without making it less pretty.

    Perhaps a slot to spawn a defense drone might be worthwhile, the drone's purpose being to literally just ram itself into projectiles targeting the mothership.
    An indicator showing which fighters are being spectated might be nice too.

    One of Red's interceptors once entered Blue's mothership via the hangar. Presumably, it left via other damage.

    Dude, imagine using this system to do mock battles from the perspective or certain lores where one side has better technology vs the other side (example is halo obviously), by making one side have better of everything or even shields but more grey random balls to slow their production while the other side has weaker of everything, but less grey balls speeding production up.

    Ok, crazy idea, but what if you did something like marble kingdoms with the fleets like space fleet war, the battles like this, and the settlements like planets or motherships or something

    POV ships should be marked on the main screen. Though it was challenging to figure out which ship it is.

    1st person pieves are so cool. i have no idea how you made the 3d space work, but i salute that you did and it looks so good! I agree with some others that the motherships are too close, and that the engagements are a little messy. I think that could be fixed by slowing down ship movement speeds quite alot, and decreasing the "slide" when turning. I know space has nofriction, but some kind of air resistance in the modelling (call em inertial dampeners :P ) would help tidy things up a bit i think.

    If this becomes a series, I’m sure a lot of things are going to change. Here are just a few major things I found:
    -It looks great, but it’s really hard to keep track of. All I can see most of the time is a bunch of ships flying into each other at one point and less of them coming out(slight exaggeration, if I look closely, I can see what’s happening, but if I do, I miss everything else that’s happening). Also the whole ships flying way off the screen thing.
    -I think the motherships are too close together. They participate too much I think. I think they should be more like the planets from Space Fleet War. Much farther apart, still capable of defending itself.
    -The fighter models are different enough it’s easy to tell them apart. I know you have a model for the mothership, I saw it in the pov camera. But from the main view, it just looks like a flat platform.
    I’m sure this will change a lot, and I’ll have more to say after most of the minor problems are sorted.

    Another excellent event, well done! :)
    The smaller ships' shape and swirly attack patterns somehow reminded me of an old game called Star Raiders II.
    And the fighter POV reminded me of Homeworld: Cataclysm. :)
    I really like using 'inert' marbles that bounce around on their own as the barriers in the mixer. Adds more chaos than usual.
    Overall, this is pretty excellent.
    Some ideas/notes for you to consider:
    - the '2x' field does 'something' to the number, but I can't tell what. It resulted in three fighters being launched at times. Not a big deal, but something to look into.
    - also the '2x' effect is invisible, which is kind of sad. :P It would be neat if the marbles in the mixer increased in intensity or brightness as they gained value or multipliers.
    - the green thing in the backdrop of the mixer looks like it would do something, but it's actually just the same image as the battle's skybox, right? I thought it'd do something interesting, like send the marble back up into the top half to gain more numbers, if one went through it. :)
    - some additional spawn types to consider:
    - - A support ship, equipped with small PD guns and a repair beam. Hovers around the mothership and slowly restores HP, rather weak and vulnerable to attack otherwise. If the mothership's HP is full, bravely goes on the attack and dies in the process. :P
    - - A harvester ship, that goes out towards the center of the field to gather resources from asteroids. More tough than the support ship, but also weakly armed. If allowed enough time to process an asteroid, spawns an extra marble into its side's mixer. Asteroids would slowly drift through the center of the field as a sparse stream, and occasionally block shots during combat. If all asteroids are gone from the field, it will attempt attacking the enemy ships with its PD guns.
    - - A 'capital' ship. Only one spawns per marble, regardless of value or multiplier it had. Rather, it becomes bigger, tougher, and more powerful (possibly with different hull shapes and weapons load) depending on how large the value of the marble that spawned it was. So a '1' or '2' marble would spawn a little assault frigate, a '3' or '4' would result in an ion cannon frigate perhaps, '5' would spawn a destroyer, '6' and '7' would drop a cruiser, '8' and '9' would be a battleship, and '10' would drop a carrier that dispenses more fighters and bombers on its own. Something like that.

    This is amazing and beautiful. If I knew how I would set this up as a screensaver on my computer or something. A 24 hour stream of repeating matches of this or something would be really cool honestly.
    It's hard to follow what's going on sometimes, but in this case I think that's okay. It's nice to just... Watch all these strikecraft blow each other up for 20 minutes. (I am probably going to watch this like three times, those 1st person camera views are cool)

      Also I have been working on my own ai that acts like humans and has memories and a life inside of the game that I am making very much like rdr2 but they are going to be a bit more smarter and realistic

    That was awesome, very beautiful to watch, I agree with others that it’d be nice if the motherships were further or participated less but no big deal, personally would love to see some larger craft like missile armed cruisers or carriers that occasionally spawn fighters coming out to play every once in a while, maybe they spawn when a mothership hits half health or something, or just spawning in as a rare marble drop

    Suggestions:
    1. Maybe you could make the battle more tight. Adding more marbles when time goes.
    2. More types of ships, and even multiple or spawnable mothership. How about adding some tank type (tough, aggressive but slow and big), strategic weapon (unable to move, fragile but super destructive)
    3. More maps. Like planet base conquering(an asymmetric map with ground and space battlefield) or death star

      Mostly Freelancer, but also a dash of SWBF2! I have fond memories of camping under the enemy main ship with the bomber just hitting the shield generator or whatever it was

    What a damn shame that this was doomed to be a Blue win from the start. Seems like the Red bombers have to clear the field of interceptors before getting shot down immediately, meanwhile bluebombers make mothership atk runs with 5-10 red ships still alive

    I love the jet views on the corner of the screen. It gives me a sense of a true space war. You're probably the best in 3d marble game making!

    It's really hard to tell it's 3d in a lot of ways. Maybe use a mother ship pov? Also maybe give the ships harder lines or an exterior light source. I think these might make it clearer

    Honestly I have a feeling this could be made better if the motherships slowly moved in to attack as well, so that at the start they'd barely fire & towards the end they would start constantly firing & taking hits, even attacking eachother if it gets that far.

    It would be interesting to see the ships have different scripting determining what they do - Bombers just dive straight for the enemy mothership, with interceptors prioritizing them. Not sure what would happen with hunters, but gunships would likely perform multiple roles - very killy against interceptors and capable of stopping bombers as well, while also having the ability to dish out lots of damage to the opponent's mothership.
    It was frustrating watching Red look like they were about to win it several times only for their fleet of 20 ships to all wheel away from Blue's mothership to chase after one interceptor, giving Blue time to keep spawning more ships

    I really like the 1st person views, would you be willing to try and set up a way to tell which ship you're seeing from? maybe make them a slightly different color or adding an icon of some sort to indicate which one it is. either way this is an awesome video, thank you.

    I feel that the motherships are a bit too powerful, and also that the spaceships focus on one another way too much, especially the case for the bombers who should focus on the enemy mothership. Gunships is easily the best ship, so maybe give a bit more love to the bomber and hunter; such as giving the bomber two sets of "guns" the bombs they need to drop on the mothership, and a singular weak cannon which can fire all around the ship (or one cannon in the front and one in the back which fires in an arc). While the hunter's weapon is cool, it is far too slow, so take away the bombers seeking weaponry and give it to the hunter alongside a faster firing weapon and possibly some more maneuverability.

    This is definitely an amazing upstep from the big ships with internal effects (Though personally I found that one FAR more engaging as a "game" concept.
    This reminds me of those giant fights going on in the back of TV shows and movies. Random levels of lasers and combat erupting in the distance as it ebbs and flows in intensity over the course of a movie.
    I do have to agree with some of the other comments though but I have a suggestion to get around this problem! (and it's actually used in a lot of RTS games from the N64 days):
    Perhaps as an improvement next time: Create a 7 camera system. It would actually be exactly like you have here, but the only difference would be that the opposing "flotilla" factions would have a border separating their ship view from the combat. The actual combat zone would then become its own entity in the center able to be expanded on as the fight got more intense.
    -*1 camera for each "fleet"* (you can have a new/more impressive carrier slowly arrive to the flotilla as a timer for each new ship type this way it can signify when new ships are being released and be more visually engaging to see the multitude of ships being delivered. This will also allow you space to do some pretty cool improvement opportunities to the fleets like defense guns and orbiting repair vessels as choices for the ball to drop into as well!) Plus would let you "deliver" another ball to spawn more ships at the same time dependent on the size of the flotilla. This "disconnected camera system" would also mean the combat area can be as big as you need to make sure ships don't accidentally run into the motherships of opposing factions AND have room to pick up speed and avoid collisions if needed. There were a LOT of bouncing ships in this engagement due to the tight combat field.
    -1 Primary engagement zone. (this would be the bulk of the arena, where the engagement takes place. This could be whatever size you deem fit. It also can be expanded and contracted on if you so desired to make it more impressive and grow with the scale of combat happening until all you see are the lasers being fired back and forth between the massive fleets.
    -*1 camera locked onto a ship for engagement purposes at the corner of the screen.* (This would allow the viewers to see the detail you've put into the fighters and the various ships that are being spawned.)
    And of course the camera view of the delivery method to get those ships spawned for each faction. (the balls dropping). With the added ships, improved combat zone and more to space to work with this would open up a huge amount of available improvements to be had on the dropper method!) :D

    I wonder if it would be a good idea to add an "ai" stage to the unit selection; where it chooses between "attack" (priority target the enemy ship, only defend self if attacked), "intercept" (priority target enemy fighters, only attack ship if no enemy fighters are out) or "defend"(fly within a certain distance away from the ship, attacking anything hostile that gets within that distance)
    Would also need to probably increase the distance between ships for this, but eh.

    I don't know if it's possible with your simulator, but do you think it's possible to have the main camera slowly orbit the two motherships on the battlefield? That'd really contribute to being able to appreciate the 3D aspect of this game, and help with seeing the orientation of ships in flight as well as see anyone who's flown off screen at certain angles.
    The main angle would orbit the battlefield, with a wide angle and seperation as it approaches the midpoint between motherships, then narrowing back it as it goes behind a mothership for an almost pov of the commanding vehicle. I already saw your reply to someone regarding identifying POV'd ships, really cool stuff here!

      Yes, it's for interceptor. In the Supreme Commander community people often refer to interceptors as inties, so it stuck!

      2x means the next number will double. It is stackable.
      Split will return the marble to the start and make a copy.
