I first met Jack when I was a teenager .years later I worked at stoddards and we sold his flys . He was a great inspiration as a tyer and a great friend . And man could he catch fish , like a wizard with a wand in his hand .
    I still miss him .

Hi Timmy, It's always nice to hear from one of Jacks friends. Jack visited me twice here in Norway and you're right he was a great inspiration and tyer!

Met jack in ynp years ago, the sparrow, and his marabou minnows I still use to this day the marabou streamer is one of the most productive patterns to date

I have found that tying with the aftershaft feather, the fly is more durable if the plume is wrapped around the thread prior to wrapping on the hook. The finished product looks exactly the same.

Another brilliant tie of a classic Gartside pattern, Barry! During the 1970s-1990s, we had a house in Livingston Manor, NY on the Little Beaverkill River, and every Saturday I would spend time at the Catskills Fly Fishing Museum, just down the road a piece and watch the weekly guest fly tyer of the week do a demonstration. Jack Gartside tied there and watching him tie in person and listening to his stories was such a memorable treat. It was amazing to see him tie so many different patterns using only feathers from a ring neck pheasant. He was also innovative as being among the first Tyers to use synthetic materials, and his caddis patterns using his “stuff” as he called it was breathtaking. I still use his stuff to tie my emerging caddis pupa pattern, probably one of the best patterns ever created! You have done well to honor the memory of this great American tying genius!

Hi Will, thank you. Thats great, I always encourage tyers to visit shows and demos if they can, there is nothing like watching the great tyers do their thing the way they do it! In a normal year without Covid 19, I do a little under 20 international tying shows a year. At these shows I spend all my free time watching other tyers, there is so much to learn from them. Jack was a great tyer and a great character, and his stories where legendary! Do you mean 'Jacks secret stuff' he was so ingenious at finding materials from everyday items and making good use of them. Thanks for sharing this with me.

@@Thefeatherbender Yes, Barry, I use his “secret stuff” when I can get it to make my caddis pupa. I also use it to make my own Sparkle Griffith’s Gnats palmered with a Cree feather. When I run out or cannot get the secret stuff, I use chopped up Angel Hair from my local Orvis store. It really does work, as well. My Killer Gnats and caddis variations with Angel Hair are superb trout catchers on my local Pennsylvania caddis streams. Tight lines, my friend and stay safe. Hopefully , one day we’ll meet in person. Cheers!

This is a wonderful, multi-purpose fly. I belonged to the same fly tying club as Jack & learned to tie the Sparrow from him. He would like yours. Ever since learning to tie it , I keep little containers on my desk to save different colored aftershaft feathers that I strip off different bird skins when tying other flies.

I was a member of the same club when I was 8 to 10? My father was an early member. I was told Jack used to spend a bit of time each meeting showing me something I needed to know. This was 40+ years ago. The skills I remember. Who showed me what an when is a blur.

I have tied these for others but never fished them. I would think this and the Casual Dress would be very effective, they have a similar profile. Thanks Barry, I hope you are safe and well!

Beautifully done. I connected last evening on my black version. A memorable long distance release of a fish that was an outlier for the river I fish. I never could gain control, but what a thrill!

Thanks for this. I've been tying the sparrow for a few years based on the Tim Flagler video. It is great to have a video that shows how to tie the original. I can't wait to try it out.

I recently hunted and dried a pheasant skin and have been looking for patterns that use all its various feathers, this will definitely be the next one I try out, looks super fishy! I love patterns that can be swung or dead drifted, opens up so many options!

@@Thefeatherbender follow up on this pattern, it is a super effective micro streamer in size twelve with a copper bead up front! I’ve caught at least 5 different species from the same stream on it, something about the bulky head and the PT fibers flowing along the sides makes this thing irresistible dead drifted, swung, or stripped across current, can’t keep fish off the line! Thank you for giving this pattern the attention it deserves!

I remember reading Jack saying he tied this fly sitting on the side of the stream... Impromptu, the feathers used were all he had at the time.
Tied in black, I believe it’s called the MorningStar.
I sometimes like a black ostrich herl tied at the head.
    Maybe a mono rib, too.
It looks like nothing once it’s wet and dangled in front of your face.
But in the water it comes alive
Thanks Barry for this look at a classic.
