0:14 Nocturne in F sharp minor, Op. 48 No. 2
8:15 Etude in A minor, Op. 25 No. 11
12:25 Etude in A flat major, Op. 10 No. 10
15:19 Scherzo in E major, Op. 54
The more I listen to her participation in this edition of the competition, the more fascinated I am with her versions, and the more I am convinced that she should have been the winner,
I feel that Bruce was at a higher level, but Aimi so deserved place.
&
her playing is so much more mature than 6 years ago. Amazing!
I read a comment that Sokolov had great praise for her,but that she did not live up to expectations and that he was just kind.I last saw her playing as a child and she was astonishing!I am sure that it was an unfair comment coming from someone with bad judgement. This performance tells it all.
She has grown so much. Her playing almost makes me cry
Awesome performance. I also love that she doesn't make the circus like facial gestures and body sways, looking up at the stars and histrionics that has become a viral infection among so many otherwise talented modern pianists, and quite frankly a major distraction from the actual music. Rather, she comes across poised and mature, and the performance demands respect and makes me want to stay engaged. I hope she influences other young performers.
The body sways (perhaps among other seeming “histrionics”, but certainly the body sways) are probably not the pretensions you assume, in most cases. These things get thought about and discussed a fair amount among pianists because they are automatic and involuntary (again, primarily addressing the body sways). But I share your suspicion about looking up at the stars with alternating grimaces and beatific entranced smiles, head shakes and other seemingly histrionic “body language”.
I don’t claim to be a good (certainly amateur) pianist, but I find the body automatically sways back and forth for whatever reason. It’s sort of like the natural movement of hands while walking, the opposite foot-hand moving parallel to each other. Don’t know why it occurs.
@@AnonYmous-ry2jn Right. I’m referring exclusively to the theatrics that are obviously forced - and that show up way too often. She comes across as adult and mature, beyond such nonsense.
I agree that the facial expressions are just a “viral infection” as you say. I can understand a bit of the body sway as sometimes you want to add in extra force or lean it keep the to lean away. The faces and grimaces are often absolutely unbearable. Alexandre Kanterow, is a young genius who makes none of these facial grimaces. Shishkin can be a bit annoying with his facial expressions.
I totally agree with you .
It’s becomes theatrical to watch theses expressions theses days .
You don’t need these showmanship to play the music .
I prefer the style of old masters like Horowitz or Richter which doesn’t distract to listen to the music .
Well said

AIMI KOBAYASHI comes back with her childhood glorifying genius and talent with maturity of a great performing artist
AMI comes to be heard not to win. Her performance honors the 18th Chopin Competition and pays sincere and noble homage to F.Chopin!
Her Scherzo is truly beautiful! ❣️
I agree!
Stupendous playing, great maturity and poetic, thoughtful renderings of the works, great technique but not drawing excessive attention to itself- all in the service of the music, just as Chopin intended. As another commenter suggested: the only participant I put everything else aside to listen to. Really hoping she’ll win. She’s the genuine article, a genuine artist.
Btw, such a refreshing departure from some or the flash and theatrics we get nowadays. Refined, noble, aristocratic, exactly in the Chopin ethos.

I saw the livestream, but what was wrong with the chair?
Nie zmarnowała tych 6 lat od 2015 r. Schudła, wydoroślała, dojrzała, także emocjonalnie i duchowo. Wspaniała artystka, do głębi poznała duchowe piękno tej muzyki i umie je pokazać. Brava madame Aimi.
Ale najważniejsze, że schudła 😂😂😂🤦🤦
I absolutely love this pianist.
It is just like chopin himself is sitting at the piano! Absolutely beautiful finesse!

Słuchanie takiej interpretacji to czysta rozkosz dla duszy
I love so much her sound! What's beautiful and sensitive!!!! A great artist!
Listen to Aimi every day just to feel good about music and life. Love her playing and demeanour. More repertoire would be nice.
I would like Aimi to record Chopin’s complete Nocturnes and also the complete four Scherzos. I’m in love with her thoughtful and delicate style.
I already loved her playing thinking it's very matured and deep at earlier competition.
She comes and shows again that she even made her Chopin richer this year.
Brava.
Her playing gave me goosebumps. No other contender (so far) has given me the same frisson.
The best interpretation of Etude Op. 10 No. 10 I have heard, go Aimi! Hope with my heart you win this time
What a beauty. Such enormous improvement. Her voicing and interpretation makes me speechless. Good luck for Ms. Kobayashi this year... The talent is already granted. Keep up the good work until the final!
It was an eye-catching performance. The last competition performance was good, but this competition performance is really great. And short hair and dress look so good on you. 😍 I'll cheer for you.
Beautiful playing. She really touched my heart
Best I’ve heard so far.. 48 no 2 nocturne was gorgeous playing.. the scherzo too, definitely playful.. well done aimi.. I hope you go through..
She created a world through the sound, wonderful performance! So enjoyable🙏
I agree!
A serious, deep, thoughtful performance. This is real piano playing. 😎🎹
Cudowna muzyka genialnego Chopina, boskie wykonanie. Dziękuję.
Her Scherzo is amazing! So colorful. Never heart anyone playing this piece like that.
I’m glad she went back to the competition!! I remember her being a child prodigy and then a few years later joined Chopin competition but her nerves got the best of her. She’s improved tremendously I am really proud.
Me too, I'm sooooo happy she is back. It's a surprise, I didn't expect it. I still remember her sad "empty" face when she didn't receive any prize at the final 6 years ago, I felt so much for her. And indeed, she is back at another level of maturity. I'm all for her.
@@gnourttube I couldn't believe that Japanese reporter spanked her for not winning anything in 2015.

Wow she is now more mature in every pieces! Love her sounds.

wow this is amazing .. I enjoyed she really nailed it, regardless of result in this competition. I will be her fan from now on.
She is an amazing pianist. Such feeling and emotion is in her playing. Her competitors had more attack but hers is going deeper into the heart.
This is a masterful interpretation of Chopin's music!
Best Scherzo 4 ever ❤️ another level. Wish she would record the scherzos next!
I agree! Her E Major Scherzo is great! And the more you listen, the better it gets. 😎🎹
She is the only pianist in the competition that I stopped everything and just listened to.
She's my favorite as well!!
She is my favorite, too!! She really stands out of the rest!!

My favourite nocturne, thank you very much Aimi.

Aimi, you are the best Japanese pianist I have ever heard in my life. One of the best young pianists around the world! What a deep sense of drama and passion you present! I wish you all the best in the competitions and in your life as well . Love from British Columbia, Canada.
Wow. She made the Winter Wind etude completely fresh! How did she do that? I have heard it countless times and though always impressive to hear never moved me musically like this performance.
I think she's playing it a little slower than she did 2015. This time putting in more beauty rather than speed.

She passed the 1st round. Im hoping for her to the finals.
Listening to all these wonderful pianists give me faith in humanity! Congrats to Aimi and all others at this competition who dedicate themselves to this music :)
I was so afraid that the bench incident would affect her performance, but the half an hour repertoire was just so perfectly executed with great touching, emotions and techniques. Can’t imagine how it’s like to listen it live! Really hope she can win it eventually and play more great music to us!
What bench incident?
@@j.masonbrown6216 She requested to change her chair a few times before playing

she looks on very good form, may there be a close fight. what can i say, she has it all, just a matter of performance on the night, there is no doubt that she will be in the final yet again
400 thousand views in three weeks - the power of the competition makes itself felt, as does Aimi's power of performance.
Despite the chair incidence, which wasn't the fault of her own, she managed to compose herself and delivered something so honest, passionate and graceful. Her sensitive touch, much improved techniques, and that "special thing" that can't be taught will see her through to the final! I'm rooting for you, Aimi! And congratulations on advancing to the 3rd stage!
Chair incidence?
@@ludicroussealanimations3643 yes... if you checked the livestream recording, you'd see that she had a fearful moment of not being to find a chair with the right height. The chair they provided was too low and couldnt be adjusted any higher. She asked for a new chair but that chair was also too low so she had to stick with the original chair...
Aimi Kobayashi will certainly be one of the finalists again this year. The ovation lasted for 78 seconds! Bravo!
About the trouble with the chair
I can't post the link here, but she was asked by an interviewer after her performance to talk about her chair.
She said that the height of the chair was lower than she expected, so she asked if it could be made any higher (are there any other chairs that are higher?), and since there were no other options other than those two, she said OK to the staff and started playing.
In an interview after the performance, she said she didn't remember much about how she played.
There was a reason why she needed such a high chair. She had been instructed by Prof. Meng-Chieh Liu(Yuja Wang's teacher) on her playing posture during the last competition, and although it was not perfect at the time, she now plays from a higher position. She is small in stature, so a normal chair would have been a little low for her.
In my opinion, I feel that such a height is just right, but it is up to her to decide.
But overall, the performance was good, and I think she can move on to the next stage.
@@ardeladimwit Haha, that's true if you just look at the shoulder.
But she is tense and stiff, so if she sits up straight and relax your shoulders, that problem is not likely to occur:)
@@そらから-h3p no, you are not watching carefully. She is compensating with upper body for the low stool and it could cause her long term problems in future. It's not good.
@@ardeladimwit Aren't you being a little presumptuous? Your opinion is your own, and my opinion is mine, so what we think is none of her business.
The style of play is for her to decide. It is not good to impose a strong opinion.
Please direct any further comments to her and not to me. Well, I guess you can't.
I'm looking forward to the next stage:)

Professional and masterful! She managed to tune out everything that has happened right before, and was able to focus on her playing and performed brilliantly. I would be distracted if it was me! Lol. I admired that she insisted for the right chair for her. Chair IS important. Her playing is definitely more refined and I'm excited to hear more of her. Brava!
One of the best Winter wind Etude op.25 no.11 I ever seen, and I can say it's also one of the best in history!
I got chills. Surely one of the best
Watch Cateen's interpretation of the piece on his channel! The technique and dynamics are equal to this one with the mistakes excluded, since his version isn't a live recording! But despite the mistakes because of stress and chair issues, her version was marvelous!
@@Sayuku_P cateen is participating to the chopin competition too!!
@@MattLap21 I know hehe 😂 I saw his performance before anyone else's, Hayato Sumino is actually my favourite pianist 😁 Now that I've watched the whole video dedicated to him, I'm taking a look at other competitors! And I must say, everyone is so good it will be hard for the judges to choose! (btw his scherzo gave me goosebumps 😳)
@@Sayuku_P “Cateen” - there is so much life to his playing …he’s playing Chopin with the subtlety and beautiful, praising and tone and melancholy everyone associates with Chopin. But Chopin was wickedly funny with a sharp eye for satire, for refinement through living well, he loved poking fun at his colleagues, he would have enjoyed life more but for his illness. His music is obviously a distillation of all of this. To many pianists make the mistake of thinking of Chopin as only a sickly, serious, homesick boy. Do pianists read Chopin’s letters? Do they know why he never returned to Poland? Chopin was a walking dichotomy and it’s essential to the right balance. To me Aime looks as if she’s so unhappy or too serious…as if she gets no pleasure out of her situation.her unhappy ways just put me off. A lack of errors doesn’t make a gReat musician
She's a totally different Aimi. Luvit. Amazing performance.
Beautiful performance... Brilliant! BRAVO!
She came back from 6 years ago with a vengeance and full of confidence
Aimi just kills it from first round to the final
Impressive 👍🔥❤️🎹🎶🎼🥇💯
I'm so proud of her for trying again.
Aimi is not playing a competition. She is performing a legendary concert.
ya, but if she is a legendary pianist, why does she stick to Competition???? Which means she is not legendary.....
She's a queen, she's quite calm even just before the start, other players couldn't wait to come out of the stage and waited under the stairs, but she still had something to chew on and drink. I can only say that it was amazing, but you can still impress the audience if you go on stage.
It's like thank you for coming to my concert ...
I thought I was saying that.
