You are right about not stressing over your first rod, any cheap rod will do for your first few times. I fish at a pier and sometimes the only people catching consistently all day are the little kids with their spiderman fishing set. Anything will work!
Can you or do you have a pole rigging video? I’ve got all the info. I just have no idea what I’m doing or what I need to rig properly or if I need to cut the line
The first thing I noticed about this reel is its weight ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but it was a little heavier than other similarly sized reels. However, that didn't deter my enjoyment of how smooth this reel is. I spooled it with 20lb. Tuf-Line XP and it's perfect for what I use it for. I have it paired with an 8'6" Medium/Fast Okuma SST Salmon/Steelhead rod. The combination is perfect for casting and even drifting. I used the reel all day and didn't experience any arm or hand fatigue except when fighting a few fish! The bail is solid and feels strong when engaging by reeling and manually closing the bail by hand. The large rubber handle grip is very comfortable. It's got a powerful drag, silky smooth reeling, and feels very comfortable in the hands. I recommend it!
I just got back to fishing after 15 long years. This guide refreshed my memory as everything was explained thourougly. Thank you for sharing! Cheers from Japan. 🍻
I maybe missed it.. but I don’t see it say anything about telling folks to clean or rinse your rods and reels after saltwater fishing .. that saltwater will destroy rods and reels if not rinsed off!!!
Where we fish in Brazil, I’ve never seen anyone using a reel. They all just wind the nylon round a piece of card wrapped in selotape. They catch fish to sell. We wrapped ours round a flip-flop. Just had to walk home barefoot.
Great advice! I've used all those lures and they work. The rod and reel combo was spot on for inshore. If you guys start with a cheap combo and then want to upgrade later, do it, and then that can become your bait catching rod. Great video
Just found your channel. Trying to learn how to saltwater fish I've had hardly any luck catching anything worth keeping. New sub hoping to learn it's hard for me to go out to were they really are I'm disabled wheelchair bound so I'm pretty much restricted to piers and icw banks
Hey! My husband and I have watched a ton of your videos. Unsure if we’re missing something, but we’ve gone out 4 weekends back to back and only have caught 1 mangrove snapper and 1 spiked burr fish. We’ve tried all the recommended lures and live shrimp. Any additional info on inshore only? Or maybe a video I’m missing. Ideal times, water depth, weights based on depths? We’re in the Clearwater area, tried Courtney Campbell causeway, Sand Key, Skyway pier. We’ve asked a few bait shops and used their recommendations but still seem to struggle. Appreciate all the info!!!
Thanks so much, taking my first trip to Hilton Head Island to do pier and off shore fishing and this helped me cut down and what I needed to add to my gear. Explanation was some of the best I have seen yet!
Freshwater fished DECADES ago. Moved to FL and starting to saltwater fish. Really enjoy your basics and intro video for learning. Lots of talk about knots and line tying. What about swivels? Ease of use was my old thinking. Is that a no-no for saltwater use? Any intro or reintro videos in my case are greatly appreciated. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Good info, can't believe I never thought of fishing reports. Hear them all the time on the radio for the local lakes. Any tips on getting more time on the water too lol!
Hey man. Just came across your video since I recently moved to Tampa. I live in Hyde Park and was wondering if you’d recommend any good spots to fish near me? I don’t mind traveling toward Clearwater too. Btw great video!
Nice info, one more lure recommendation from me, metal lures like jig / spoon, so it will be your best 5 lure. Best lure for bluefish, macks, bonito, queenfish other pelagic fish.
We in Portugal do need fishing license by law but i never bought one ,what we do is go to some hidden beaches and never had a problem with game wardens sometimes they pass by us in a boat and never had an issue im 23 and have been fishing since i was a little boy Anyways, See Ya Dude!🤘 mate!🤘
Great video! You really break it down. But what would you recommend for someone that's looking to fish on the piers in the Tampa area??? Places like Fort Desoto, Skyway, Pier 60, Johns pass and Ballast point. I dont have access to a boat and I dont want to have too small of a rod/reel, or one that is too big. I may be into surf fishing as well. Please help!
I used to go fishing down at Pier 60 back in high school and catch mackerel. I would recommend either a 3000 or 4000 size spinning reel on a medium or medium/lite action rod. That size setup is still small enough to have fun catching fish, but also strong enough to catch some bigger fish
Coming down January to March and want to fish. Thanks for the info. Very helpful. My wife wants me to catch supper for us several times a week. LOL Thanks again.
I try and avoid swivels as much as I can to minimize the number of knots I have on my rigs. The knot is always the weakest part of a rig, so I try keeping it to only the leader knot and at the hook
I got lucky with my rod and reel combo. I work in sanitation so I managed to find a 9.5 foot rod that was barely used and got a reel from Dicks on clearance for $25 and a 40 lb braided line also in clearance so total investment was like $35
fyi.. the link to the circle hooks points to the fluoro leader (the fluoro leader does too, so its right.) great video. amateur here. bought all of the lures here... much appreciated.
Thanks for the tips. New fisherman here lol.. If I'm taking another person with me on my inflatable boat to fish, does the other person needs a license too or one license per boat will do?
Ive been fishing small streams and rivers for a few years now but i want to get into salt water fishing im going to OCMD soon and was wondering if the stuff in this video would be good for fishing off the pier
Yes it would, I might recommend getting a longer rod if that's what you plan on doing the majority of the time. It would help with getting more distance on your casts
@@moorepr09 honestly dude i been here going on two years, im STILL learning and still feel like a newbie! Maybe we can link up and find some spots togther? I use the fishbrain app alot bc i know nothing 😩
Brent - I really really appreciate this. New to Tampa and new to fishing. I was wasting a ton of time online looking for a starter-lists then I found this. If you have a patreon page, lemme know - I'll buy you a beer.
Just went fishing in Marco Island in saltwater(my dad’s first time fishing). My father caught a bonnethead shark on his last cast. We brought it in but figured we couldn’t keep it because it was pregnant. But he still got his picture!
Greatly appreciate this, Brent. Here's a question from a guy who knows nothing about fishing. Are those rods specific to the type of fishing or where you fish? Sorry for the crazy question.
Rods are more specific to the type of fishing. You can use the same rod all over the world as long as you're using it in the way it was designed to be used
@@SeeYaDude thank you for the prompt response. I'm also asking because I've seen folks in neighborhoods at their ponds fishing and would like to know if something economical would work. Again, thank you!
Yes, I've even gone up to 40 lb leader before on 20 lb braid. You want to match the leader size to the fish and conditions you are fishing. It does get harder to tie leader to braid knots when you do this, but I'd say a 20 lb difference in the lines would be the max I would go
So I can't locate the 4000FE Shimano Sienna anymore, I guess it's discontinued. Did another model take its place? I really appreciate the help, first time buying equipment for brackish.

Some good advice. One thing you might add is no matter what the price of your rig is take care of it, salt water isn’t good for any thing.
