      There aren't ANY schools for this skill anywhere.
      The skill is passed from generation to generation, and the younger people will just take the shortcut and use force, machines, or welding to do what you see Trev do in the video.
      Notice how slowly Trev works the small piece!

    Thanks Trev. I have messed around for years getting poor results, not knowing what I am doing and because of this video and other of yours that I have watched, I now understand. When I have tried to remove dents in the past I have been doing it backward, trying to hit out from behind when I should have placed he dolly there as in your explanation of curve of steel etc . Thank you...

    Hello, learned a lot from your videos!!
    My bodywork teacher back in the day explained the waffle hammer as follows:
    when you hit a stomp nail again and again at random places on a flat sheet, the metal will compress at those points and the flat sheet will shrink inwards into a bowl.
    I then tried flaring out my fenders with the waffle hammer his way, but it didn't work for me, by just hiting it and by luck doing it half your way there was more succes.
    Maybe I can start on the other side now, after 20 years :)
    Cheers

    Ms C Vick here, with a question/suggestion. Is it possible that a square or triangle in the middle of stand, with matching shape inset on the back of tool thingy, might hold it just as well, while allowing use of full shape of thingy, and possibly fitting into smaller spaces?
    But thank you for explaining (at my idiot lvl) the reason and machado behind it. For not hitting from reverse side of dent.

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  4 года назад

      Clint Vick Yes you’re absolutely right, the construction could have been a more suitable shape for the job. My main point was to demonstrate that you don’t necessarily need really expensive equipment to produce effective shapes in sheet steel. Cheers Trev 👍

  • @tonydalton6756

    Thanks again Trev.
    What I have learned from you is a light tap with the hammer is more effective than a heavy hit to achieve your end goal. From a heavy hit, the metal seams to bounce rather than move.
    I'm off out to my workshop to attempt today's lesson. Great stuff & inspirational as usual.

    • @fishhuntadventure

      Well actually a heavy whack is quite dramatically effective in shaping metal… the thing is that it moves other places that aren’t beneficial- and correcting these stretches, wrinkles, and shapes is more time consuming than simply stretching it where you want it more generally to begin with.

    Hi Trev,
    this is exactly what I've been looking for since I have to insert a smaller piece into a side cover of a vespa. So now the question is how you proceed if you don't want to create ANY curvature but a certain one. And let's say different radius' in both directions. How's the process there? How do you encounter the right shape?
    Cheers

    • @trevsblog

      Steve Larsen you’d have to give mild steel “at this thickness” far more abuse before work hardening came into play. You can bend it back and forth around 200-300 times before it snaps off allowing around 10mm of material. Cheers Trev 👍

    Nice work, Trev. You're a good teacher; now I know why body work is so expensive as it is quite an art; while still a profession and very time consuming. Personally, I've been a mechanic for about fifty years and have quite a bit of welding experience which includes socket welding high pressure hydraulic piping. Stick and MIG are my experience as TIG wasn't really into use widely at that time, (1970s and 80s). Massaging sheet metal for body panels hasn't been my forte, though. This is why I feel fortunate to have found your channel. Not all of us have access to the major tools of the trade such as English wheels an such, so it's quite refreshing to see how panels can be formed using what can be easily and economically procured. I thank you for taking the time to share your expertise.

    Your dead right with the shrinking with the file slapper the original idea came from a shrinking dolly with serrations on them u might remember them they were actually used to grip the tuck when u hammer it down to shrink it nobody knew how to use them and just thought hammering flat on the serrated dolly would shrink metal then they started making those meat tenderiser hammers and called them a shrinking hammer.

    I've enjoyed many of your videos and I think you're a genius...just one question though....you aren't locking down your dolly nor your dolly holder to the base of the hardwood...wouldn't the prevention of the base movement give more curvature on each slapper blow? or is that just part of your preferred technique i.e. less indentation or curvature per slapper blow? OR are you just being lazy today? LOL Thanks!

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  5 лет назад

      James K Doherty makes no difference to the efficiency of the action because of the ballast within the tool. It does shovel on the wood after about 50 blows but I can live with that as the purpose behind the principle is being able to swap tooling about in seconds and also use the tools for multiple applications. Shrink hammer; Your explaination gives more sense to it than I probably had before.
    Have I understood it right? ; If I have a big stretch I do not want, way to shrink it, is to ding it with a needle hammer and then work the needle hammer ding, with shrink hammer and dolly? Right? ...Or wrong ? :D

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  3 года назад

      I’ve done lots of videos on shrinking please watch more videos if you’re still unsure. Basically shrinking happens when the material becomes compressed along its length. A tuck or double fold that creates a rib will shrink if it’s sandwiched between a flat object and hammer blow because of the linear compression. Cheers Trev 👍

    Also love the music in your videos. Would be interested in your music sources to see if I could find them on this side of the pond. Love having music playing some of the time when I'm putzing on projects, but not so much when working metal because it feels like the sound of the work is part of the feel for the metal. Which brings me to a question. Do you have a different feel for the metal when using a tool with a wooden handle verses a synthetic handle? I'm very new at this, but it seems like a wooden handle gives me better feedback from the metal. I guess a more delicate feel would be a way to describe it. Thanks!

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  3 года назад

      I just search for music on RUclips, there are millions of tracks on RUclips. All of my hammers have wooden handles, I tend to find that getting used to using a specific tool by using it for hundreds of hours makes it more effective in use rather than buying something with a high price tag, although struggling with something cheap and ineffective is also totally pointless. Cheers Trev 👍

    Trev, I love your video’s. But talk while your banging a piece of metal, ten min talking about metal looking a a sketch on paper does nothing for me! You have a great skill, and I learn something every Time!

      Vic Forster Hi Vic it’s a shame you found the video less than perfect. Unfortunately it isn’t possible from my side to tailor make a video that’s going to please everybody. Many of the things I talk about are answering repeat questions from viewers. I currently spend well over an hour a day dealing with questions from confused viewers via email. I really don’t mind helping these people out but that time spent could be used to make more content. This is why I spend the time going into great detail about repeated questions. Cheers Trev 👍

    Wanting to make some compound curvature panels to repair damaged spots on my 1970 airstream. Do you think this is doable for a rookie? English wheel or your hammer technique?

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  4 года назад

      Anthony Trickle unfortunately I don’t know your personal abilities. This could be a difficult project especially as the airstream would be a metal finish. Cheers Trev 👍

      I think I listed the names of the tools within the video. I’m pretty sure it was basically a dolly, panel hammer. Slapper/beating file. Cheers Trev 👍

    Absolutely fantastic video, one can only aspire to be at your level, a quick question though so I'm starting to think it's far better/fun to replicate my own repair panels rather than paying silly money or that it is in my case many unavailable, if you was to start out today what basic kit or brands to look for, I've already got a decent older mig welder with gas like yours (165amp) and have done basic removal of rust and blending in patch on floors and sills ect areas in which are mainly flat but come to realise not all rust enjoys those areas 🤣🤣🤣 have you a video already on your page I've missed or is that an idea for one, thanks again trev keep up the hood work and hope family and friends are good and well!

    I’ve been trying to figure out how to cope without an English wheel, and then Trev to the rescue!
    I finished my slapper and started knocking the dents out of my Austin Healey shroud, but I’ve got some repair patches that I will need to make up soon
