On Pianos Become the Teeth's sophomore LP, the band sports all the qualities I look for in a screamo group. However, they stop short of separating themselves from many of the bands in this style.
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

"i just don't understand what he's getting so emotional over." (when describing the singer's vocals)
....the record is about his father's bout with an illness that killed him and the subsequent emotional distress that he and his mother dealt with after his passing. seems fairly justified to me.

Bruh, you should review beta the lyrics before making this video, I know that I'm kinda late here, but I just think this album might be the deepest screamo album from "the wave" ever made, vocally speaking the guy drains himself on those songs, I think he was even trying to make melodic enough to make sound softy, he just let all his emotions out in the screaming what is basically what this music genre is about.
    Thanx, xoxo.

The more you listen to the album, the more you gradually become aware that you can hear what he's screaming about, I was surprised when I could practically make out the lyrics of an entire song.
This album is probably my favorite of the year, they have honed their sound to perfection, and the vocals have way more variation than any PBTT release prior. I can easily see how a lot of people would still be turned off to the vocals however.

  • @skipgoggins9626
    @skipgoggins9626 2 года назад +5

This album to me, is groundbreaking. The vocals are straight from his soul. And the guitar work is beautiful, it’s ambient yet heavy. Melodic yet aggressive.
Most importantly, the lyrics are amazing. The cleverness and substance to the lyrics, despite still being able to comprehend what he’s saying is amazing. Kyle is easily one of the best writers/lyricist I’ve ever seen. Not only does the album reflect on the loss of a loved one, but it captures the nostalgia of being young and growing up. It’s a masterpiece

I think its kinda funny that he said Good Times was his least favorite song on the album because his main complaint was lack of vocal variation but that song (in my opinion) has the most variation of the whole album

Okay hey, so, you are very right in many ways. Kyle's screams are very hard to decipher. But that's where one can find love for this band. What seems to just be screams of nothingness have lyrics such as "I wish I could find a god's teeth to grit them for him." Kyle makes you put a lot of effort in hearing his songs, but that's where the reward is. You get to see the focus that you cannot see because you haven't spent enough time with the words and have been harnessing in on the musicianship of the LP. This is 37 minutes of focus on Kyle dealing with losing his father, though this topic isn't a hard one to conjure up, you get to hear the pain in his voice. Screaming is the only appropriate way to externalize this inner thoughts. I would recommend revisiting this album and READ more into it than LISTENING into it.

I went to see them open for La Dispute and not hearing them ever before. I felt so much emotion for them when they would do the things that you describe (the loud screaming while doing it in the "odd places") and it worked for me. I came home and immediately purchased the album. So what i am getting at is please, please see them live I think that it might change your review!

I saw them with touché and circle takes the square back when they were working on this album.
And it was one of my favorite shows of all time.
And fell in love with their music.
However. The part of the show that reallt was memorable was during Touché Amores set. When they played the song “beat of a dead horse”
Everyone was dog piling the singer. Just to stream the lyrics and the overall atmosphere was incredible. And pianos set was so brilliant. And yeah
I just cannot believe that this was almost 12 fuckin years ago.
    Like wow.

I personally love this album, probably my favorite from 2011. Maybe it's not groundbreaking but it is very passionate, and that's a trait that I feel that many modern screamo bands lack, at least on recordings. It's a record that feels very raw and real, aswell as having great drumming and fantastic lyrics (which I must say I didn't have trouble making out for the most part, but to each his own). I do agree that the vocals aren't very varied, but I don't personally mind that.

the death of his father. the record tells a REAL emotional story and takes the listener on a painful journey through the death aftermath and coing process after the death of a loved one. i feel like the lyrics should have been discussed in this review do to how personal and yet universal they are. lyricaly its an amazing story and the music comliments it beautifully. there last full length relase, Old Pride, was great as well! id give this rec an 8 considering lyrics may have been over looked.

Whoah what's with all the hate from Pianos fans? I love the band, and this is one of my favorite albums of all time, so I also disagree with some of Anthony's criticisms. But he's pretty damn knowledgeable and goes about his reviews pretty objectively and intelligently, its not like he's just hating on the band.

I'm a friend of Pianos... Mike from Pianos recorded my band, I've jammed with Zac a handful of times, and I grew up in the same area as Chad. I appreciate your review my friend. I loved the record, personally. I"m sick of screamo for the most part, but Pianos seems to, (for me) carry the torch of bands like Saetia, Orchid, etc... I'll Get By is definitely the highlight of the record for me...

Review their new album "Keep You" Interested in what you have to say about it. I noticed you said something about them not having a whole lot of vocal variation in this album. In "keep You" they actually went away from the screaming and have a more clean, emotional, lyrically driven album. Reminds me of a Brand New, Lydia-esque band. Funny you mentioned Explosions in the Sky in this review, because I related their new album to Explosions in the Sky if they had powerful lyrics over their beautiful instrumentals.

Dude I fucking love Pianos Become The Teeth more than anything, but this guy expressed a perfectly logical and fair opinion. He also threw in some positives, he didn't exactly just create a video ripping on a band for no reason. He gave foundation to his opinion, it may not be the same opinion as me and you, but surely that's the beauty of an opinion? That's the beauty of music and art, not everybody falls for the same thing.

Thanks for getting to this one! For me, what's always made Pianos Become The Teeth miles ahead of other hardcore bands are the post rock elements and the fact that the vocals aren't as HARSH. Yeah he's incomprehensible at times, but it's much better than other bands on the scene today. The instrumentation is awesome on this but I wish he'd sing like he does on "I'll Get By" more often. Also, I too could've used some instruments in the mix, like piano or cello they've used in previous releases...

I love this record. I don't just say that because I'm friends with, and jam in a project with Zac, the bassist from Pianos, and Mike from Pianos recorded, mixed, and mastered my old band's EP.... I love, and was super impressed with this record.
I loved Old Pride, but The Lack Long After was miles ahead of Old Pride.

However. Seeing them live when this album came out. It was pretty amazing live. And I loved the sound of the semi hollow body guitars playing super distorted. Nowadays you see that a lot. But back in 2011 - it wasn’t very common to see a band like this rocking Rickenbachers

Yo, Anthony i agree. I dont really like the wave. Pianos are decent, Touche Amore is decent, and i really dislike la dispute. I do however believe, Envy and Pg. 99 are amazing. Shoulda included orchid in there.... Orchid helped bridge the gap in between emo and powerviolence and thrashcore.

@Mugenis4real That's a great idea, it could be called Cal's Musical voyage of discovery, and he could review Take That, Rihanna, Justin Beiber, 50 Cent, Nickleback, Susan Boyle, and Steps, and trick us into thinking they have great albums.
