Yeah, that Dreamcast port is fantastic! This is how I like my reimaginings. They keep everything you love about the original game, and add just enough quality of life improvements to make it feel fresh. No reinventing the wheel!

Compared to the others, the PS1 port is pretty weak, but if you don't own any of the other platforms it's a fine port. I poured dozens and dozens of hours into my copy as a teen, and ended up getting all 8 classes to max level and unlocking 100% of the game. I adored it, even if it had a lot of technical shortcomings.

The reason the N64 is flickering it's because it's running at too fast a framerate. It should be running at closer to 25-30, occasionally to 40. Never to 60fps, and with the expansion pak it should be slower.
Edit: forgot to mention the Arcade technically had multiple revisions, and they ran with different levels of RAM, that would affect the visual quality.

I've just bought a N64 with Everdrive to get around the poor state of N64 emulation.

I played Gauntlet Legends on Dreamcast so much. I had the luck to play and finish it with two friends of mine. 3 in cooperation, it was so much fun. On Dreamcast the game is beautiful with colourful graphics, animation is fast with nice arcade gameplay that makes it so dynamic. Music, not unforgettable, perfectly make the job. And this voice, the disembodied tone that remind the ones of Gauntlet 1 and 2. It was the mark of the Atari/Midway games of the 80s. Yes, I love Gauntlet Legends and I'm happy to had the luck to discover it on the best version. Give it a try, but on Dreamcast of course 🤩

I love the Gauntlet franchise and have a great collection of games starting with the Gauntlet tapes for the ZX Spectrum (including Dandy Atari-8bit and Dark Chambers), I had a lot of fun with Gauntlet Legends, I think Midway did a great job giving that feeling of arcade games, the narrator's voice like in the first arcade games is also sensational. If I were to do a Gauntlet ranking I would put Gauntlet IV (Mega Drive, great soundtrack and the introduction of Quest mode) first, followed by Legends and finally the Slayer edition (it's very different but I had a lot of fun with it too ). Today the best way to play Legends is through PS2's Dark Legacy with the Widescreen patch

Firstly, I'm going to have to quote myself from your Gauntlet II BotP because this story bears repeating because it was sooo weird: "I really liked the early Gauntlet games, but absolutely loved Gauntlet Legends and Gauntlet Dark Legacy. I put a ton of money into two different cabs (one at a theater that stayed as Legacy; the other at a small arcade that got upgraded to Dark Legacy), maintaining characters on both. I bought the N64 version of Legends when it launched and got the DC version later (DC version might look the best and have some of the Dark Legacy features, but the inventory and shop system of the N64 just made me like that version more). I also bought Dark Legacy, first for X-Box, but eventually before the generation was up on PS2 and GC too...I think it was the only multi-platform title of that generation I bought on all 3 systems during that time...Not smart, but I loved Legends/Dark Legacy so much.
Also, I had one of my weirdest experiences arcade game experiences with a Dark Legacy cab (not the one I normally played): it was in the entrance area of a Wal-Mart store that was not the one I would normally visit, but I was with a friend who always went to that store instead. He was buying a PSX game of some sort, but we stopped and played Dark Legacy on our way in. And, after we started playing (new characters) suddenly, I'm not joking at all, some dirty, stanky, bum that looked like he hadn't showed in years and definitely had been drinking recently crawled out from between the other two cabinets they had (a racing game I don't remember and Fighting Bujutsu, which was the only place I ever saw that cabinet).
He watched us play until both of our credits ran out, and made comments about the game that certainly showed that he'd played the game. Then, this dude said something to the effect of "You boys made a good effort, but playing with just one credit in is child's play." And, here's a direct quote of what he said next that my friend and I will never forget: "Now, watch how a real master does it. I don't mess around!" and proceeded to take some money out of his coat pocket, stuck a $20 and a couple $5 bills into the coin/change machine there by the arcade and claw machines, and put all-in-all around $40-$50 in quarters into the machine. He loaded up a high-70s level Wizard and goes to town. I'll never forget how that guy just cackled at the look on our faces when he shoved his probably entire net worth into the machine. We eventually went in, and my friend bought whatever it was he was getting (Vagrant Story, maybe), and this guy was still going to town. Insane experience, but hilarious too."
As for the ports of Legends, the Dreamcast version looks, sounds (the N64 music isn't bad for not being CD-Audio of the arcade like the others), and runs better...but, I don't know, the inventory/shop/upgrade system from the N64 version should have carried through to the DC and really pushes the N64 version to the top since it's more conducive to home play (Dark Legacy, at least the Xbox version which is the only home port I've played, has the N64 version's inventory management, which even the PS1 version had). It's also massively better than the PSX port in most ways. I still like the Dreamcast version and played a lot of after I bought it in '01, but I still prefer the N64 port. But, it's also hard to recommend the N64 version over the Xbox (and I presume PS2 and GC, again don't own those) port of Dark Legacy though since they look and run so much nicer.
And on the note of Dark Legacy, I've had the XBox version forever, and last year in March or April I got to talking with a friend who is now blind (wasn't born that way; completely lost his eyesight about 10 years ago in unfortunate incident) about the Gauntlet Legends bum that I mentioned. Now, we've played some top-down games like Diablo 3 and Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 and a few other games that work okay enough that he can be guided. So, I traveled and got together with him, his brother, and another friend a few weeks later, and we played through Forsaken Province, Mountain Kingdom, and almost all of Castle Stronghold with him before it got to be too much for him. Still, it was a lot of good fun and surprisingly accessible in person.

    • @shotgunl
      @shotgunl Год назад +3

This is probably one of the machines that I'd like to have a real, original cab of, since it's one of my favorite arcade games ever, and would be fun with friends. It's not a tip-top favorite, but top-10. Many 3d re-imaginings of older series turned out less-than-stellar, but Gauntlet Legends did a pretty darn good job of feeling like part of the series, while still being new.

I've never played this game, only the NES Gauntlet and Gauntlet IV on the Genesis, but it looks decent. I'm not sure if it's an emulation issue or how the arcade original was actually designed, but I noticed it has some wobbly polygons that give it the look of a PS1 game, and the announcer is hard panned to the left speaker for some reason. All other versions have the announcer voice in the center, so I'm guessing it's just an emulation issue. The Nintendo 64 port is quite excellent for the system. It's a shame it couldn't be emulated correctly, but even with that I can tell it's a good version. Interestingly, the PS1 port seems to be at an unlocked framerate, peaking at 60 but dropping frames whenever there's more than a few enemies/projectiles on screen, and overall it just doesn't look good. The Dreamcast port looks like the arcade version but with better shading effects and less slowdown.

The major shortcoming of the Nintendo 64 version is that originally the 4MB RAM Pack was not something that Nintendo itself believed was going to be a standard until it was released and pretty much kept selling out here in the U.S. and probably Canada and Mexico among the hardcore gamer, and Nintendo 64 fans.
Midway Games however held a low bar of game development on the Nintendo 64 hardware and they really should have taken a page from Capcom in Japan and just Required the 4MB RAM Cartridge and put their best efforts into their ports and also not rush them for the holiday season... FMV CGi as cool as they can seem are in all seriouness, just NOT really necessary... the Arcade hardware Atari Games (the arcade company not related to Atari Corp) had based their 3d arcade hardware on the 3DFX Voodoo chipset and essentially a closed box Personal Computer in terms of the parts used so when their rushed ports on N64 came dangerously close to being very very close to the arcade source material with sloppy and rushed effort, it just game Midway Games a bad reputation that we had to put up with despite their actual arcade games and Atari Games 3d games having a lot of potential.
Iirc Atari Games went under and Midway Games purchased them... and it is very clear that the N64 hardware even without the 4MB RAM Pack is under utilized yet the access times between booting the N64 to play a game are just hands down much more preferable to the prettier Sega Dreamcast version with it's scratch screech GD-ROM drive... Midway Games with their games and Atari Games could have ascended to a Namco and near Sega or Capcom caliber but they had the typical mentality of not really tapping the N64 hardware and just blowing off multiple millions of ROM Cartridges being sold which could have enabled them to use the larger 64MB or 512Megabit ROM Cartridges a lot earlier.

Dreamcast all the way. I think Guantlet Legends was another one of those Midway games using that horrible "Zeus" hardware, which was basically an arcade version of the N64(kidding, but kind of not). Just as MK Gold looked WAY batter than arcade MK4, GL on DC looks WAY better than the arcade version.

The Playstation version is really cheap in the UK but it's going to be locked at 50hz so that's a version to take a pass on. Then again, our N64 version is 50Hz too, and it's certainly not cheap, neither is the Dreamcast version. I'd recommend people opt for Midway Arcade Treasures instead, it's super cheap, has the original Gauntlet and lots of other classic arcade games like Paperboy, Tapper etc. on it, Gauntlet Legends looks kind of ugly to me.

Dreamcast, N64 (Based on emulation) Arcade, and PS1. The arcade color depth seems too low. It's like the Arcade is using Dreamcast geometry with PS1 color depth and texture. Arcade has better geometry than the N64, but the N64 has better textures and camera angles.

The Dreamcast port on real hardware suffers from some FPS drops here and there. It's not bad but it doesn't maintain 30fps at all times. It also has a little stutter whenever the music ends and starts over. Aside from these two issues it's a great port of the Arcade.
