One of this movie’s problems: The dialogue is overly-modern, using modern colloquialisms instead of something fitting the period.
There’s no sense of superstition to the Natives facing what they would clearly see as a demonic spirit. We’re talking about American Indians, after all; they’re well-known for the deeply-held spiritual beliefs that they hold to even today.
Everyone talks like someone from today, aside from the unwashed, dirty French trappers that are depicted with every single negative trope under the sun. There’s no visual indication of the times on the Indian characters: They’re all soft-skinned and look like Vogue models in warpaint. These are COMANCHES, for God’s sake!

The movie was alright but you hit the nail on the head with the dialogue. Her dialogue during the fire scene where she whistles to lure the Predator was a big turn off. If she hadn't said anything while the predator approached and it was just a big stare down I would really appreciate it a lot more.

I like your idea for the protagonist being overly-protective, therefore she wants to fight.
RLM also had a good idea, instead of a warrior she turns into a leader of her tribe, strategies a plan for them to take down the predator together - 'Prey' can also be Plural.
But Hollywood doesn't give a sh*t and the standards are so low it turns a mediocre film into a highlight.

To piggyback off of that "old-western Predator" thought:
Setting is mid-1800s Arizona or Texas in the midst of a possible war between local native american tribes, a large gang of outlaws and a town's citizens smack dab in the middle of their territories. However, a small group of Predators sees this as an opportunity to earn lots of trophies, so they lands in the middle to claim their prizes.
Now the gang of thieves, the native tribes and the townsfolk need to find some common ground before the "Skinwalkers" decide to wipe them all out one by one.

  • @TheShadowivan
    @TheShadowivan 2 года назад +77

My problem with the MC is that it feels there where 3 versions the script writer had in their head: one of a badass female warrior, which you can see all over the movie, one of a smart hunter who lacked experience and was afraid, like at the start when they were hunting the puma, and another one who is not even a warrior at all has has to rise up to the challenge, given that she was trained as a healer and those flowers are what gave her an advantage over this predator.
I feel if they stuck with one version of the MC, it could have been a more enjoyable experience.

@SLugZ _pls Not saying unbelievable, just feeling that they had 2 characters, one that was just a badass and another that needed a little push to become a badass, and sometimes feels like the the script could not agree which one she was supposed to be. Like a said, inconsistent.
i mean, the movie has more problem apart the MC, even if they made her more of a consistent character, the movie is still kinda boring and the action scenes to tame to be an enjoyable one.

People keep saying "it's supposed to be an inexperienced and reckless fighter" but why would you want to watch a movie about a predator be bad at the one thing they're supposed to be? To the point they fucking kill themselves because they don't know how their own equipment works. Also Naru being completely unphased at the end of the movie from fighting what she thinks is a demon that killed her brother and half her tribe, when Dutch was left with PTSD at the end of Predator annoyed me.
The biggest issue with this movie though, is that Hollywood has set such a low fucking bar for what makes a good movie that people keep saying the movie is amazing.

Just like you describe the non-existing motivation for her to become a hunter, there are also many instances where they have to make the Predator dumb or even outright ignore rules they establish. The end fight is especially obnoxious with the Predator hitting her with his shield that should cut her head off, only to do barely any damage. You can actually see that in this video's footage. It is really the desperation to create a strong female character when it does it out of necessity to dumb down the script.

The problem is that she is outfighting the Predator in hand 2 hand several times during the final battle. She should be immediately dead every time she fights close range, including when the Pred grabs her by the throat, when it bodynslams her full force into the ground, when it slices her with its shield, even when jumps 30ft from a tree onto the Pred.
She's shown as faster than him, is able to overpower him like when she pushes him to cut his own arm off and when she is able to push both of them into some rocks to save herself despite his strength and weight, and when she's able to jump on him, tie a rope around him, and somehow pull him over despite him outweighed her by about 400lbs. Keep in mind he stands still and does nothing while she's roping and pulling him.
The Pred is so stupid that he falls for literally every trap that's set for him, and just moronically stores for several seconds while his arrow is flying around to shoot him in the face. Her final plan shouldn't even worm because it requires insane placement of the male and the Predators head. where if he's even a few inches off the plan fails. Keep in kind that's only if the Pred decides to use his gun instead of literally anything else.

Here’s my two cents. If I was a bad writer and I was told to write something I would write something bad and my biases would be clearly shown. That’s all this really is. It’s a badly written film with the opinions of the writers on display because they couldn’t write something that distracted people. Narnia and LOTR are very heavily influenced by the Catholic faith, but no one goes “this is Catholic propaganda” because they are so well written you don’t notice it. If this film had been written better a lot of its complaints would die. Wait a minute, make something good and get praise. That makes a lot of sense actually. Huh.

    • @shadowofhawk55
      @shadowofhawk55 2 года назад +6

@SLugZ _pls I don't think its propaganda, and I apologise for not phrasing my statement better. My point was you can see certain Biases from the writers, such as a wanting to display a very violent and unclean people as nicer and cleaner than they really were than they were. They also displayed the Comanche as though they were like the Iroquois or Cherokee, when they were a much more brutal and violent people. And then having her goal be "I want to hunt because I am strong woman" instead of something that made sense with the setting, just to push a girl power message.
This stuff isn't bad inherently, it just could've been written better to mask it more. For Example, Full Metal Jacket never explicitly goes "WAR BAD!!!" but it makes you feel the effects of war and what it does to people. If they switch the line "I hunt cause you think I can't" to something more like "I want to hunt because I want to be valuable" or something they shows more character. Her motivation feels anti glass ceiling, not wanting to be a better person, if that makes sense.

I'm not a writer but her reason for wanting to be a hunter could have been to hunt a certain animal. Like a cougar (with a specific pattern or scar on it) kills her family so she wants to kill it. She tracks and finds it in a cave or something. When she's about to attack it the predator appears and kills it with a knife or it's hands. Then that's its introduction maybe 30 minuets in.

you hit the nail on the head when talking about the woke/anti-woke struggle.
the thing that many anti-woke folk don't get right now is that the pendulum always swings, if you fight your enemies with zeal and passion then over time you burn yourself into thinking that you are right about everything. or worse, you believe that you can never be wrong.
I hate woke culture. I hate what it has done to the things I love and am passionate about. movies, the video game industry, D&D (thank god for pathfinder), all the way down to writing as a whole and artform itself.
but I can't become bitter, or hateful at the folk themselves, because that just sets me up to take their place and begin to rip away things that don't belong to me to make them "better" and to make them "mine".
and just like that, I become a walking talking living nightmare of what I hated.
in about 2 years, many folks that I look up to and support will ideologically twist themselves into the very thing I respected them for fighting against, mostly because they became addicted to attention and trick themselves into thinking they cannot be wrong or have their strings pulled. I am very glad you likely will still be someone I respect by the time that pendulum hits the other side.

I liked the idea of a Predator movie where two Yautja are at odds with each other. One of them being a 'Bad Blood' (someone that dishonours their species by revelling in killing for the sheer sake of killing, armed or not.), and the other being someone specifically sent in to kill them. I feel this'd also work with having a predator being a protagonist. the Yautja hunting the the Bad Blood could function in a secondary protagonist role.
I was thinking of the Hunter being from a Widow Clan. Wives' that've lost their partners. This'd mean the Hunter would be a Huntress, a female Yautja. Despite that, her gender would only be addressed maybe once throughout the entire movie. Going with the idea of Predators being individuals, instead of being all the same, I like the idea of the Huntress actually being Bad Blood's tutor, with hints of even a parental role having taken course in the past. It'd be hard to spot upon first sitting, but both the Huntress and Bad Blood are having difficulty delivering that fatal strike and finally killing the other. For Bad Blood, it's killing someone he's never had a vendetta against, and for the Huntress, it's killing what's essentially her adopted son, even if he does deserve it.
For small details, I'd go with the Huntress having zero care for Humans. She's got no interest in hunting them, and despite that lack of care for them overall, she also doesn't go out of her way to kill any of them, only killing those that attack her first. We'd also see her skillset, and along with that, her prowess in her skillset. She's stealthy, a stalker first, and definitely no berserker. Her moves are precise, cautious and calculated. Displaying a lack of playfulness rare among what we've seen of Yautja. Still big like all Yautja of course (because super-model body Yautja sounds dumb as hell.). We'd also get hints of her age. She's past her prime, whilst Bad Blood is still in it. In all likelihood, this'd be her last mission before reaching the status of an Elder.
For Bad Blood, we'd get details that make him more sympathetic, whilst still making it clear he absolutely needs to go down, as he will not stop. Maybe he's got a lot of scars on his body. Deliberate scars, not done by him. Maybe some part of him just...broke during his mission, possibly being captured, tortured and experimented on. We could get a few hints that a part of Bad Blood wants to die, so it can just end, so he can let go, and hopefully have an honourable death too.
Anyways, this is just a little ramble. Had the ideas in my head for a while, wanted to put them into words.

I think what you had to say was totally valid. I’m strongly anti-woke myself, but I perfectly understand the point you’re trying to make about how people are seeing things that aren’t there. It’s really not all that different from the whole crowd seeing everything as racist or sexist, when you get right down to it, it’s just the other extreme.
It really is a case-by-case thing. I wrote Prey off because of the marketing, because that did the movie no favors, but now that it’s out, I don’t think it really benefits anybody to talk about it in the same way you would, say, She-Hulk. She-Hulk is already getting a lot of mockery for being hyper-feminist, and deservedly so.
There is a part of me that really hopes that the end of this stuff is just beyond the horizon, but only time will tell. For now, I’m just gonna go back to enjoying things as I have been. Getting stuck in the trenches with this stuff is annoying and exhausting.

No human being should do that well in a close up hand to hand fight with a yautja. I think that was definitely some feminist filmmaking right there, but if the rest of the movie was any good, I wouldn't even mind it that much.

Predator vs Batman. It was an excellent comic and could be an excellent movie.

I personally think no one from this time period should be so easily able to intuit how the highly advanced tech of a spacefaring race would work. I also think the homing aspect of the shoulder cannon was contrived as hell (original plasma cannon had no tracking in flight) and done only to serve as the mechanism of the predator s demise. Why would a person from the 1700 know more about predator tech than an actual predator?
There are also several scenes where she outmuscles the predator like when she pulls him into the sinkhole and forces his shield into his arm.
Overall I think the film cheapens the predator to elevate the protagonist. Just compare Arnold at the end of the first predator to Amber in prey. One is in a state of utter PTSD the other comes home unscathed and triumphantly hoisting her "told ya so" trophy.
Despite what the film does right I think it degrades the mystique of predators overall.

Not to bother you or anything Lofi. But I just finished your 21 hour berserk analysis and I was wondering if you’ve read the latest chapters so we might get a part six to the berserk video series?? Like I said, sorry to bother you and all but I’m just curious. (I may or may not be addicted to berserk after seeing your video tbh.) 😂😏

I completely agree with how you pointed out how dry the charecters were it felt like the main charecter being Native American wasn't as important as her being a woman and going against gender norms. Also I still think this is the best predator sequel to date, even if some scenes feel not needed.

Can't help to compare Prey to 2011's The Thing because both have allot of the same problems with tha characters as much as they work more like tropes and archetypes, the only difference is that Prey was followed by an awful movie while 2011's The Thing was followed by an outstanding film.

I’d say the one argument towards *her* as the protagonist is that final fight between them two literally becomes a different film. The fight between the Yautja is though very stylized yet natural but there’s nothing that took me right out it. The fight with Naru and the Yautja felt like a John Wick fight. She starts jumping from a tree what looks like 20ft. Or so lands on the Yautja and then flips off trees, slides under him, even uses her dog perk she leveled up using her xp to have it materialize tomahawk in mouth. Then in the end when she pulled the Yautja off his feet into the quicksand I thought”….how she do that….?”

The bottom line is the setting is great, the directing and the script were average. Even if you’re a shitty photographer if what you’re taking a picture of is beautiful the picture won’t look terrible. Film making is an art and the art should always be the focus. However social issues have always been a key motivation in ALL OF FILM MAKING. Some of the most celebrated movies in history have had the most belabored political messages that could be imagined. This is why anti Hollywood conspiracy theory spreads, because there’s political advantage to doing so. The question is not IF a film has an agenda, it’s does the art reflect honestly, and ideally does the art transcend its idealogical limitations? Getting mad that a film has an agenda is like getting mad that rain is wet.

That chick took the role for the woke agenda. She didn't knew it was about Predator until they started filming! Stop making excuses of defending woke horseshit just because it isn't overly in your face preachy and the writing isn't full cancer just like that trash of Arcane.
